With the loss of her father, Jessamyne Clayborne finds herself without any family, except for her estranged brother, Robert, who has long since sought his fortune elsewhere. Set in the wilds of colonial Australia, Midnight Whispers is an extraordinary new novel by Carol Warburton, filled with unforgettable characters, compelling dialogue, fastpaced action, and the faith of a strong woman who must follow her heart at any costs.
Considering this is one of those "Mormon" books (aka published by Covenant Books) I thought it was pretty good. But give me a sappy romance and I am yours. I am also a sucker for pioneer/cowboy type stories, and with this one set in the Outback, I was a goner before I started. I did like how the story wasn't totally engrossed on the Church. Don't get me wrong, I love the Church, but sometimes I think that it detracts from the story instead of adding to it. Almost like they had to add in the Church to get the book published by Covenant. Anyways, this one isn't like that and I enjoyed it.
I wasn't all that impressed with the story but I did love the descriptive language the author used in describing Australia. I enjoyed the McKabe family and their strong work ethics and family values. The rest of the story was predictable.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved learning a little about Australia and it’s people. I loved references on faith. The adventures were exciting. There were many obstacles to overcome, both within and outward. All took courage and perseverance. It was a book that I did not want to set down.
I liked the suspense and romance in this book. The mystery around her brother and around Australia was a good addition. It was cool to see the culture of the native people to Australia and how that added to the story. It was a cute book.
This book took me forever to get into. By the time I was finishing it, I’d forgotten what had happened at the beginning. I did like the romance though.
i have to give it a three because i'm a bit torn, i loved it and i also couldn't wait to put it down. i loved the idea of horses and the australian outback, but i hated that there wasn't a whole lot of interaction between brock and jessamyne. it was also very obvious who did it, you knew from the beginning who was involved. i love, love stories but this one didn't do it for me, you have brock and jessamyne knowing they have feelings for eachother but they spend three quarters of the book ignoring and avoiding each other, now is it just me or do most love interests try to get the others attention? then after they try to make each other jealous, then all of a sudden they practically can't keep their hands off each other, what's up with that? then he proposes after they have kissed in the garden,THAT VERY NIGHT, they've denied eachother for so long now they want to get married? , sorry little rant, i spent most of the last quarter of the book wondering what scandal she was going to uncover about brock that was going to break off the engagement temporarily, it just happened that fast. i did love the way we got to know the aboriginal culture though, and they characters were very well written, especially anne and millie. i loved though that there was a lesson in it, face your fear, don't run. i loved how jessamyne finally got over her fear of horses, it wasn't instantaneous either, for which i was thankful, she had to go through some uncomfortable times to get there, but that's life and i loved it. over all good book, ok love story line, great morals and lessons. nice little fluffy read.
I really should start taking my list of books that I want to read to the library with me (instead of browsing the adult shelves randomly right before checking out with 5 bags of children's books). I listened to this as a book on tape (mostly in the car). It was nice for a book on tape, in that it was easy to stop and start repeatedly. It was an easy read and a fast read. I liked some parts of it better than others. I am being a bit vague, because I can't remember any specific parts, but I enjoyed it generally. I probably would not read it more than once. I really like strong female characters, and this almost does that.
I was interested in this book from the beginning. I learned a lot about Australia as that where Jessamyne Clayborne was headed to be united with her brother. Her parents are both dead and he is the only one left. On the ship to Australia a huge storm sweeps Jessamyne from the ship. Everyone assumes she is dead, but somehow she survives. Many things happen to her before she is to see her brother. When she does she is disappointed in him as she learns of intrigue and deceit concerning his dealings with life. Enjoyable reading!
I love this book, I have read it more than once. When Jessamyne finds herself alone she travels to Australia hoping to reunite with her brother whom she hasn't seen since she was young. When a storm comes up Jessamyne falls off the ship and is left for dead. The McKade family finds her and nurses her back to health. This story finds Jassamyne having to follow her heart even if it means giving up her long lost brother for the one she loves.
Really enjoyed it...can't wait to read others written by this author. This is my first but I read she wrote a story about Ireland so looking for that next unless there is a sequel to this one which would be awesome because I like to know what happens after the happy ever after...do they ever hear and accept the Hewitt's religion...I really like historical fiction especially with romance stories in it....
This book was full of love and described well the differences in the cities of the olden days in Australia and the country. I loved it because it told the story of how a girl had to give up her brother who wasn't entirely above the law for her one true love. It is sad in that her brother is so terrible but is good in that it serves justice to those who had hurt others.
great read! I really liked the foreshadowing that the author used at the beginning in the form of a dream. It kept the reader looking for the dream to come to life. I liked the pull between love of blood family and that of doing what is right. the story displayed the different views for discrimination against the aboriginies or the abos. easy read, just can't put it down.
The storyline in this one was alright. A 20ish girl's father dies and she heads to Australia to live with her estranged brother. She gets swept overboard during a storm, and is found and cared for by Aborigines, and then a family that she grows close to. But, I had a hard time with the author's writing. Parts dragged, or weren't clear.
Like the Shakespeare play, it's the McKades and the Claybornes. Jessamyne Clayborne washes ashore and right into the arms of Brock McKade. Because of their goodness, the McKade family couldn't be anything like her estranged brother describes them. Robert Clayborne's character is questioned and realization of his misdealings against the law and the McKades are brought to light.
This was an enjoyable book, but was a little slower moving. It did have several hooks that kept me reading because I was curious to see what happened and get answers for things. Not my favorite book but definitely worth reading if you'd like a light romance with a little suspense and mystery tied in.
Carol Warburton is becoming one of my favorite authors! And I enjoyed this book just as much as all her others! She captures you from the first page all the way to the end. I thought it was a great read and learned a lot about Australia. I love horses and riding and really enjoyed that part of this book.
I liked this book a lot, though I think it was a bit lengthy. There better be another one too, because the church was just barely mentioned, so it left a lot hanging. Maybe having Millie's story, yeah, that would be great. :)
I fast-skimmed this book. I really just wanted to get throught it. It was an o.k. book I guess, definitely not my favorite. I did like that it was set in Australia though. The romance was pretty good, but the adventure in the story was more prominent.
This book is one of my favorites. I loved Jessa's strength in going to tell Brock and his family what she had seen, even though her brother ordered her not to. It showed that she was determined to do what was right.
I do enjoy books by Carol Warburton. They are very clean, and always an adventure and love story. Jessamyne is very brave and learns to overcome fears she thought she never would. Definitely a good and inspiring read.
I really enjoyed this book. It kept my attention the whole time. It is a quick easy read. If you like reading romance books that take place in around 1850-1900, this is a great book to read. Loved it!
I really enjoyed the love story but I was sad that Jessamyne's brother was so turned toward materialistic things that he forgot that family is what really matters and turned her away. It was fun to read about life in Australia and the power of faith
It was easy for me to step into this book and put myself in Jessamyne's shoes and experience all her emotions. She is definitely a woman I would look up too, and would love to be friends with. Not to mention, who wouldn't want Brock???!!! ;)
This book left me happy. It started off well, The love story took a little while to get going but it was a great love story. It was a fun a quick read. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted a fulfilling and clean love story.
