John Robbins was an American author, who popularized the links among nutrition, environmentalism, and animal rights. He was the author of the 1987 Diet for a New America, an exposé on connections between diet, physical health, animal cruelty, and environmentalism. Robbins founded the organization EarthSave in 1988 and co-founded the Food Revolution Network with his son, Ocean, in 2011. He was a leading voice in the plant-based movement.
I was disappointed to read the ‘Eating as if Earth Mattered’ section. I find it hard to believe that some of our leading environmentalists – with all the facts available on sustainability – continue to think that animal agriculture is possible or sustainable.
The US is a leader and should be clearly setting standards and stating the facts on global depletion, climate change, and environmental impacts. It’s shameful. I personally do not feel that the environmentalists are using their platforms to clearly explain the impacts of eating meat. Not eating a big honking slab (McKibben), farming the way it was in the good ‘ol days - is that all ya got?
The book has an engaging format, articulate, and at times it's inspiring. It covers much of the broad spectrum of the current food revolution. Because eating is so foundational, our food choices impact the environment, climate, health, world hunger, animals, and more – a high level introduction to some of the basic arguments is needed. Reading what different Thought Leaders are saying is fun.
“Voices” will give you the big picture and interconnectedness of the food choice issues. Issues that on their own can be complex; the broad reach of impacts can be forgotten. The book supplies online resources for new comers and for activist to delve more deeply into complex issues.
I liked the interview format – the questions are thoughtful and include a lot of content. I think John and Ocean did a great job (although I sometimes get bored with rehearing that John wrote ‘Diet For a New America’ and the Baskin-Robins story of his youth – even though it may be justified for new readers).
As I transition towards veganism I want to read as much about it as possible. So I came looking for solid information build upon scientific research and found nothing but propaganda and ego-stroking. So, if - like me - you're looking for reliable information about nutrition and impact of veganism on environment - look elsewhere. This is repetitive trash.
Soooo good! I especially liked how it spoke to the alignment of your value system & how you want to live in the world with what you choose to eat. Spiritual alignment, compassion, sensitivity, engagement, peace. Loved it.
A very thought provoking series of interviews concerning the effect of our dietary choices have on our health and the community at large. I would highly recommend it.
Though I disagree with several key religious and political perspectives in this book, I find it a very informative read that provoked my thinking. I've long suspected that the additives in our western diets are creating enormous health challenges to our citizenry and this book confirms that suspicion. It also brings a much deeper awareness of the challenges we face in a global food network that is increasingly dominated by large entities whose practices are contributing to massive ecological damage in rivers and soil management.
The interview format is very engaging and is the first of its kind that I've read. The contributors are fascinating personalities with excellent communication skills. Their messages are passionate and well articulated. Several themes of responsible eating, returning to local food outlets and fighting against conglomerations in the food industry are woven throughout the book. There are practical suggestions for personal involvement in dietary changes, shopping and activism. Each main section ends with several recommended sites for further reading.
Overall, I give the book a five because it educates and inspires you to reconsider your perspectives on eating and responsible diets. You do not have to espouse all the new age sentiments at the end of the book to walk away with a sense of gratitude for these individuals who are out there trying to call us back to more organic ways of living in our communities and in our personal lives.
A series of essays on a range of topics — from nutrition to sustainability to animal cruelty — from renowned experts. Presented as “conversations” with John Robbins, they are easy-to-digest facts and snippets of thought about different issues.
For anyone not in the know, this is a book pushing veganism and a plant-based diet. I have read books by many of the contributors to this collection, including Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, and John Robbins's own book Diet for a New America. As someone who is moderately well-versed in vegan literature, this book regurgitated lots of information I already knew, but was still interesting and a fun, light refresher.
Full of good insights into the issues at stake in the food revolution. It covers ground from GMOs, to the horrors of factory farms, to Big Ag's control of government, to the plight of the indigenous farmers. The book is worth the price just for the information it gives about the latest nutrition studies pointing to a whole foods plant based diet as the healthiest human diet. It certainly won't answer every question that you might have on these far-flung issues, but it will point you in the direction to look for more answers. There is good reason that so many people are concerned over these issues. It's time to find out why.
This book made me think about things I never really had before. About 95% of the interviews were interesting, thought-provoking, and compelling (only a few failed to pull me in). I have chosen a plant-based diet for health reasons, but this book got me thinking about environmental issues, use of chemicals & GMOs in our food sources, and the highly questionable practices used by most large farming operations in this country. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone - a quick read.
Very interesting read. Gives alot of useful information and makes you really think about your food, what you eat and a healthier alternative that will both improve your quality of life and help to heal you from the inside out.
This book has a lot of good information. It change my way of thinking. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a step to eating right. I won this book on Goodreads. Thank you
If you are a vegan or vegetarian or contemplating becoming one then this book is for you. But I prefer a more rounded approach to my diet so I found this book rather boring and repetitive. Sorry.
a good read, especially if you are thinking of making a change in your eating habits. it has given me lots to think about and has helped motivate me to change two more things in my diet.
