Teaching Thinking
Is thinking a matter of intelligence or a skill that can be taught deliberately? Can thinking be taught directly as a curriculum subject in schools?
Edward de Bono has done more than anyone to pioneer the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. In the USA and elsewhere around the world an increasing number of schools are putting thinking on to the curriculum. Research shows that even as little as seven hours' instruction can have a significant effect on the performance of pupils.
When this book was first published these matters were controversial. Today the teaching of thinking, thanks in large part to Edward de Bono, is firmly established in many countries as a necessary part of education.
Teaching knowledge is not enough. In order to survive and thrive in a complex world every youngster leaving school needs to be equipped with basic thinking skills. Just being good at argument and critical thinking is not enough.

The opening line is great but the details are so didactic in a repugnant kind of way. Otherwise a good book for teacher professional reading.

This book is about mental models and teaching them to people. Its split into 2 chapters, first one is theory about thinking and what it is, and the second is about how can one teach people to think.
I found the first chapter helpful because most of the things outlined are common sense but not necessarily obvious. A lot of the ideas need no evidence nor experimentation to prove their usefulness.
The second chapter goes deeper into some methods De Bono formulated and collected to form his CoRT Thinking programme, which is just another collection of general mental models / transferable thinking skills that people (esp. pupils) can use.
Some interesting key concepts I learned:
1. Critical thinking is easy, generative thinking is not.
2. Perfect information would make thinking unnecessary.
3. Thinking is the deliberate exploration of experience for a purpose.
4. Data become information only when they are looked at through the spectacles of an idea.
5. Communication is more important than anything else.
6. Language and thinking have a close relationship. 2 reasons: (1) Cultural: religion and metaphysics have provided us with lots of words and concepts that are hard to falsify (no hard facts). (2) Physical: the brain receives info and not data. Ideally one should receive data and transform it independently into info.
7. “A more modest intelligence may be accompanied by a high degree of thinking skill”.
8. Two stages of thinking: attention-directing and processing.
9. De Bono defines a pattern as: "When the movement from the present state to the succeeding state occurs with a probability above chance then a pattern is present."
10. thinking (is about) ⇒ perception ⇒ patterns ⇒ attention ⇒ “attention-directors” (mental models).
11. Try to construct a mental model that is independent of the “content” of the situation.
My understanding is to better one's thinking, the following applies:
Content + Logic + Personality ⇒ Better Thinking
1. Where Content = learning any subject & experience, exposure to multitude of events
2. Logic = typical math, computer, philosophy, formal logic..etc.
3. Personality = personal traits / psychology that are mutable

It's kinda tiresome and does lack excitement, but it is definitely taught me something. Let's see if it makes me more critical in thinking.
