Kao što kaže sama Zagorka, u romanu su prikazana tri posve različita ljubavna para »od kojih će svaki za sebe sa svojom ljubavi i svojom idejom imati svoju publiku«. Roman se temelji na povijesnim izvorima o vladavini kralja Stjepana VI. (u Ugarskoj Stjepana V.) i njegova sina Ladislava IV. Kumanca. Zbivanja se događaju u Hrvatskoj i Ugarskoj (Grič, Budim, Požega) u 13. stoljeću, u vremenu koje pokriva posljednju godinu Stjepanove vladavine (1272.) i prvu godinu vladavine maloljetnog Ladislava i njegove majke Elizabete, Stjepanove udovice (1273.). Riječ je o vremenu borbe Katoličke crkve protiv »krivovjernih« bogumila, sukoba i izmirenja ugarskih kraljeva s Rudolfom Habsburškim i češkim kraljem Otokarom, te svađa hrvatskih velikaša Gisingovaca i Babonića, odnosno o vremenu »luđačkog praznovjerja«, »bjesnila histerične krvoločnosti«, »vijeku ludosti i histerije«.

Marija Jurić Zagorka
86 books310 followersMarija Jurić Zagorka was a Croatian journalist, novelist and dramatist, the first female journalist and second in the list of most popular Croatian writers of all time (by the 2005 poll compiled by Vjesnik, a Zagreb daily newspaper). Many of her works have been adapted to film.
She was born in the village of Negovec near Vrbovec, to a well-standing family, which allowed her a good education, but in spite of her talent and many gifts, her parents decided to end her education early and, soon after leaving school, married her off to a man whom she barely knew, a Hungarian railway clerk 18 years her senior. The marriage ended abruptly with her escape from the house, first to Sremska Mitrovica and then to Zagreb, due to her husband's and mother-in-law's abuse.
It was in Zagreb that she began her career as a journalist, which was a highly unusual career for a woman in those days, and because of that, she was frowned upon, humiliated and prejudiced against her entire life. She was forced to write anonymously, under pseudonyms that hid her gender, and hide herself at work so nobody would notice there was a woman writing for (and later running) a newspaper. This didn't stop her from being politically involved, fighting against the Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia, and fighting for the rights of women, which caused her considerable problems in life, both professionally and privately.
Urged by Bishop Strossmayer, Zagorka began writing historic novels, usually set in 16th, 17th and 18th century Croatia. She instantly became popular amongst the people, who endearingly called her "The Fairy of Zagorje" (upon publishing Grička vještica) and "Queen of Croatians" (upon publishing Gordana: Kraljica Hrvata). The critics and her colleagues, however, constantly put her down, ridiculed her work, slurred her as a person and as a writer, and deliberately ignored her in literary magazines and almanacs. Still, she kept on writing and published her works as a part of her newspaper so they would be affordable to the general public, adapted her own and the works of August Šenoa for theater, ran two magazines "Ženski list" (1925- 1938) and "Hrvatica" (1938-1940) addressed to the female public, and with her young female colleagues formed the Society of Croatian Female Writers.
Upon the formation of Independent State of Croatia, the magazine "Hrvatica" was forcibly canceled and her entire estate is taken from her, leaving her without means to support herself. Desperate, Zagorka attempted suicide, but luckily survived. Living in Zagreb, she saw the end of WWII thanks to the financial help and care of her loyal public. Despite her age and weak health, she continued fighting for the rights of women, even though it earned her the ridicule and animosity of her male colleagues, who repeatedly called her "a madwoman" and "mannish old hag", until the day of her death.
None of her novels have been translated into English, but two are available in German: Grička vještica and Malleus maleficarum. 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress. The exact number of the novels she has written is unknown, but it is presumed that she wrote around 35, some of which are lost forever.

My favorite author.
Her books are a perfect combination of love story, history, crime and social chronicle - something for everyone!
These books are my favorite. I read them a few times, and every time I complain when I reached the end.
I will certainly read it again!

Historical novel based upon events in Croatia and Hungary in the second part of the 13. century when powerful Árpád dynasty is going towards their end.
In 1246 Stephen was crowned as junior King and his father, Béla IV of Hungary, entrusted him with the government of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, but the three provinces were de facto governed by the Ban Stephen Gut-Keled. Stephen's father, attempting to bind the powerful but pagan Cuman tribes more closely to the dynasty, arranged for Stephen's marriage, as a youth, to Elizabeth, the daughter of a Cuman chieftain Köten.
Stephen and his father had very tense reationship, Stephen has crowned himself as the king of the Eastern parts of the kingdom, but his father sent troops against him.
Stephen's wife and son were captured by his father's partisans. However, he managed to repel the siege and to commence a counter-attack..
After his father's death (1270), Stephen inherited the whole Kingdom of Hungary, although the deceased senior king had entrusted his daughter, Anna and his followers to King Ottokar II of Bohemia in his last will, and they had escaped to Prague before Stephen arrived to Esztergom.
In this novel we follow the last year of Stephen's reign (1272) and Ladislas IV the Cuman's early year of reign, Catholic church fighting against the rise of Bogomilism and political games between Ottokar II of Bohemia and Rudolph I of Germany. All of this is the background of the story about 3 different couples who try to find their love in crazy, bloody and superstitious times in medieval Europe.

Radi se o još jednom genijalnom Zagorkinom romanu. To je prikaz turbulencija u Hrvatskoj u 13. stoljeću, za vrijeme vladavine Arpadovića.
No i zanemarivanjem povijesnog konteksta, čitatelju željnom napetosti, kriminala, spletki, urota, dojmljvih junakinja i visokih strojnih momaka će se roman definitivno svidjeti. 1383 stranice daju pravu omjer zaokreta, osnova, bitki, vitlanja mačevima i svega što volimo ;)

Još jedna godina u znaku Marije Jurić Zagorke i njezinih velikih djela, i po opsegu, i značaju. Kao zaseban naslov, ''Plameni inkvizitori'' su vjerojatno i najzamršeniji roman do sada, budući da u fokusu imamo čak tri ženska lika, čije se sudbine međusobno isprepliču, dok pratimo radnju prožetu povijesnim događajima i osobama koje će obilježiti ove prostore u 13. st. Paralelno s time, imamo i romanse, kako bi pojačale osjećaj zabrinutosti za onima kojima su istinska ljubav na prvom mjestu, dok se zgražamo nad onima koji su vođeni požudom i vlastitim interesima. Naravno, što bi to sve bilo, kada ne bi pravda odigrala svoju ulogu protiv iskvarenosti i pokušaju da se očuva nečiji identitet, ili izvrši kao primjerena kazna za počinitelja nedjela? Najjači aspekti ovog romana svakako moraju biti gorko slatki osjećaji po glavne likove. Dok se njihovi planovi u povijesnim okvirima ne ostvaruju onako, kako ih zamišljaju i planiraju, oni uspijevaju pronaći radost u privatnim životima i sa nadom u perspektivniju budućnost, dokle god su ustrajni u svom vjerovanju. Jedino zamjeram ovom naslovu što mi se čini kao da je ispunjen sa previše sporednih stanica, koje skreću tijek glavne radnje, a bilo bi preporučljivo pročitati ga u kombinaciji sa manjim brojem Zagorkinih radova kroz godinu, kako se ne bi doimalo previše repetitivno, budući da dobrim dijelom prati njezin poznati koncept.
Another year with Marija Jurich Zagorka and her great works, both by length, and by meaning. As a title itself, ''The Flaming Inquisitors'' are probable the most complicated novel to date, since the focus is around three female protagonists, whose destines intertwine with each other, while we follow the plot filled with historical events and persons who've marked this landscape in the 13th century. Parallel with them, we also have romance, as well, to increase the sense of worry for those whom the true love is at first place, while being repulsed by those who are lead by lust and personal gains. Of course, what would all that be, when justice doesn't play it's part against corruption and in the attempt to preserve someone's identity, or enact as a justifiable punishment for the culprit? The strongest aspects of this novel are definitely bitter sweet feelings of the main protagonists. While their plans in historical context don't go, as they've expected them to be, they are able to find joy in their personal lives and with a hope towards more perspective future, as long as they are persistence in their beliefs. My only complain to this title is that seems it's filled with too much of side stages, which redirect the flow of the main plot, and it would be recommendable to read it with a lesser number of Zagorka's work through the year, so it's not too repetitive, since it follows her known concept.

Volim volim volim ovu knjigu i rado preporucujem svakoj mladoj devojci punoj snova o ljubavi kao neizostavan deo mladelackih dana. Danasnje devojcice odrastaju brze nego sto bi trebalo i nemaju vremena da sanjaju, mastaju vec jurcaju u surovu realnost medjupolnih odnosa. Ovo je knjiga o tome kako bi ljubav muskraca trebalo da izgleda i kakva se i u stvarnosti srece i dogadja zenama koje imaju srece, postuju sebe i zahtevaju apsolutno postovanje od partnera.

Zagorka kakvu volimo i obozavamo. Radnja je pomalo neujednačena, u pojedinim dijelovima ide presporo, nekada u središtu dosadana Elizabeta i njezin ljubavnik. Rasplet je prebrzo išao, prvo se 900 stranica Dorja i Tomo mrze, da bi se u 50 strana oženili i imali dijete. Svojom radnjom previše podsjeća na gricku vješticu. Puno detalj sličnosti. Ali, u svakom slučaju,preporučava pročitati.

Prvi put sam ovu knjigu pročitala u osnovnoj školi i sada zahvaljujuči Gornjogradskim coprnicama opet.... šokiralo me je koliko su zapravo citati iz te knjige primjenjivi i u današnje doba...
"Živimo u doba kad zloća i dobrota prelaze granice. Evo, kraljevska obitelj živi u odvratnosti. Mirena sebe i Radoslava predaje savršenstvu duha i tijela. Dragoša okajava zvjerstvo Kumanke. Olivero daje svoju čast ljepoti svojeg lica, Orhida izdaje svoju krv, Tajana, eto, žrtvuje mladi život – da njezin ljubljeni bude sretan s drugom. Strahovito je živjeti razumnom čovjeku u ovo doba kad je zloća podivljala, a dobrota poludjela."
"Konradov brav ne može dospjeti do svojega gospodara da mu priopći kako se neki mladić usudio usprotiviti njegovu jednookom prvaku – jer se Konrad potpuno izgubio, uživajući u loženju lomače što već visoko plamti. Oko ove ognjene smrti natjerali su Konradovi ljudi seljake da kleče i čekaju. Svi se pokoravaju. Ovo djelo sam pročitala više puta i svaki put s istim žarom uronim u taj svijet. Likovi, povijest, radnja — sve su komponente spojene s takvom snagom i ljepotom da čovjek ne može ostati ravnodušan.
Zagorka ponovo majstorski kombinira povijesni ambijent i romantične zaplete, a kemija među likovima osjeća se autentično i snažno — njihove strasti, sukobi i savezi oblikuju priču na način koji ju čini gotovo bezvremenskom: “...ali ljubav u srcu - to je zvijezda gore na nebu. Skriva se u noći, ali utrnuti ne može...”
Tomo Crni Loborski jedan je od onih Zagorkinih likova koji ostaju u srcu dugo nakon što se knjiga zatvori.....
