Every small town has a dark secret. Every person who roams its streets is hiding something. On the night before Charlotte's grandmother dies, she hands her keys for a house she did not know existed, in a town she has never heard of. Had Charlotte known the truth, she never would have gone to that house, because sometimes the truth does not set you free.
Dudu Busani-Dube is the author of the popular Hlomu series of self-published novels, being Hlomu the Wife, Zandile the Resolute, and Naledi his Love, which has sold tens of thousands of copies.
This book reminds of the book I once read by Candice Derman - Indescribable. A very sad 😔 and painful at the same time. Dudu Busani books will take were the story is based, and you will be living there till the end. A good story teller of our times.
This book kept me glued to it and finished it in a day. One thing about Sis Dudu is that she will deliver the best 👌. I do have to admit that it was an emotional roller-coaster, and I found myself crying here and there for the 3 girls who had to endure such cruelty from that monster Tuelo (spoiler alert).
Nevertheless, it was captivating to read. Now coming to Mzolisi, having been worshipping the Zulu brothers for years, it was a bit hard not to compare him with them but as soon as I set my mind that he was not a "Zulu brother" then it became easy to connect with his character. I can't wait to read more about his journey with Charlotte.
My heart still breaks for Neo, the girl in the yellow dress, I don't think I will recover from that honestly.
The ending left me in awe and looking forward to book 2. Thanks, Sis Dudu. Keep up the good work.❤️
I loved it to the end, people aren't who they say they are. The grandmother lied to save her image and let the secret out in her grave. She couldn't die with the shamand guilt I guess
Anything with Dudu Busani Dube on it I will read and this book was no exception, loved it from beginning to end ,Dudu has a way of writing that makes you feel like you there experiencing whats happening with all the characters, you won't want to put this book down until you down.
Only reason I didn't give full stars ,there were some spelling/punctuation mistakes and it's kind of irritating to see when reading.
This story keeps readers on their toes, no one is who they appear to be. The main character is worse because she is not who she thinks and knows herself to be. Dudu skillfully dances with our emotions and psyche, crafting a thrilling rollercoaster that we can not help but enjoy from start to finish.
Although I usually shy away from supernatural themes and secretly hoped for a scientific explanation by the end, I was delighted that justice was served instead. That made the experience a definite win for me. Unlike many first books of a series that end with dramatic cliffhangers designed solely to hook readers for the sequels, this book chose a satisfying conclusion which I really liked.
That said, my curiosity is piqued about what lies ahead. Will the ghosts of the past make a comeback? Might we delve into the viewpoints of other characters? Or are we in for an entirely new storyline? Whatever unfolds, this story has set a high bar and promises an exciting journey to come.
I loved this book. Dudu's style of writing makes you feel like you're living in the book while reading, and you are able to envision all the events happening. I recently learned about something called a victim impact statement, and I was glad when when I was able to notice one in the book. It's a beautifully written book.
It's actually quite stressful, I found myself unable to sleep and paranoid for my children but it's brilliantly written and draws out all your emotions.
This is story of pain, trauma and closure told through the eyes of Charlie. The author also highlighted issues of culture and beliefs and how children who go missing are never found. I agree with the author, “the truth shall not set you free”
I'm a huge fan of Dudu Busani-Dube, she never disappoints. This one was hard to read (emotionally) because of the child sexual abuse it has. It is a story, but it is someone's real life story out there. It had to be shared. I'd highly recommend the book, it has funny parts, educational parts and it is realistic.
