This was helpful. Trying to find recipes you’d make with the basics in case we run out of food, coronavirus has me freaked

Tasty treats.

Mince hot pie, corn fritters and the lemon chicken are my favourites from this one. A great starting point for learning the basics and then it’ll be easy to adapt the recipes to how you like them.

I bought this book for my son who's off to university and I thought it was amazing. There are tons of recipes, all of them healthy and easy to make, with complete ingredient lists and even colour photos of each dish in the book. The pricing is obviously out as this is a 2017 version I think.

There are no scales just a life size photo of a mug on a page and compare that with your mug and use that to measure, and also spoons, helpfully describes a tablespoon, desertspoon and teaspoon, and you also use these to measure with. The author also tells you how to rescue dishes if you have made a dish too spicy or burnt it; gives you a suggested weeks worth of food to buy and what meals you can make from those. There are plenty of easy meals to cook and you can increase the size of them if you want to have friends round to eat to practise your new found cooking skills!

I loved this little book, well not so little as there are nearly 200 pages, but in size, it's not a large bulky cookbook, it's the size you would easily fit in the front pocket of a small rucksack. I would definitely recommend buying this, if not for your student just for yourself!!

One of the earlier editions of this book was given to me as a gift when I went to university at 18. As someone who enjoyed cooking and wanted to learn more recipes, I thought it was a great start. The recipes are tasty and easy to cook, using straightforward ingredients and not having to buy lots of "extras" to improve the flavour that many cookbooks recommend. It also introduces a lot of basics, from how much rice to cook for one person to how long food will last despite what it says on the packet.

As a starter for someone wanting to start learning how to cook, I highly recommend this book. Enough that I make sure to buy new editions every so often so I can see new recipes and changes.

My auntie bought this for me when I became a student at The University of Plymouth. This book is full of meat based, vegetarian and vegan options. For beginners, it's excellent. I have cooked a lot of recipes in this book and I have learnt a lot. This book is great because it's easy to see how much a recipe will cost and how many people it will feed. This is a must have book for any student. As I have graduated and become vegan I no longer use this book.

Just so weird that it talks about 'mum' all the time

The recipes are ok. The many many references to 'mum' are so weird - many students will have male parents or carers who cook. Many will have mums who don't. Care leavers or estranged students, or those who don't have mums for any reason... there's just no need to write a book that isn't inclusive about this.

Good for a budget.

Loads of great recipes for those who are budget conscious, whether you're a student or not. Went ahead and bought the other books in series because this one was that good....

Great cooking book! Did all the main recipes except some desserts and sandwich fillings. Most recipes are very quick and easy to prepare, the ingredients are cheap and simple. The only down thing is that some recipes very way too greasy.

Didn't know you could review cookbooks on GoodReads. This is a pretty good cookbook for students. There's a wide range of flavours and much of it is very simple for the most part.

Like it because:

Measurements are in mugs and spoons so you don't have to weigh and mug size is given so the trouble ensuing the variance in mug size is avoided (HUGE Relief)

Recipes are easy (or look so from reading, have tried one only but I got it only yesterday :D)

You also get recipes for dips, salads and salsas so you don't have to get them from the market (Makes me so happy)

Lists, for grocery and utensils and all (MUCH NEEDED) and planned weekly menus

Pictures! Yes, you can see what the food is supposed to look like

All the fancy terms are explained in non-chef lingo

Not five star because:

I am a little concerned if the recipes are all healthy. To be fair the book does make you add fruits and veggies etc in your weekly list so five-a-day are covered. However, quite a lot of recipes involved using processed foods such as sausages which makes me a bit concerned. Of course the part of student cooking is to be fuss free and for that you would need quick fixes like this but a word about the need to have a healthy and balanced diet would have helped.

One of the best cookery books I have seen. Bought for each of my children going to uni - then got one for myself. Lots of everyday meals. Would highly recommend.
