When a mean and quarrelsome woman is found murdered in her own home, most of the residents of Balsam Dell can only say feta late than never . . .
With the summer heat sizzling, grilled cheese restaurant owner Carly Hale is thrilled to have Ross Baxter delivering her sandwiches to local seniors. She’s never met a more polite or hardworking young man, and she brushes it off when one of her more difficult customers complains about him. But then Ross returns to the woman’s home to make another delivery—and finds her dead body. The police and half the town immediately suspect he killed her, so Carly steps in to investigate, determined to prove them wrong.
Carly soon learns that the victim had an estranged stepson and stepdaughter, both of whom needed her money to get their lives back on track. Worse still, in her younger days the dead woman had a reputation for preying on other women’s husbands, leaving broken marriages in her wake—and a list of suspects a mile long. But Ross’s fingerprints were found on the murder weapon, leaving Carly hungry for any clue she can find. Until she comes face-to-face with the killer, and realizes this time she may have bitten off more than she can chew . . .

In this 4th book in the 'Grilled Cheese Mysteries' series, restaurateur/amateur sleuth Carly Hale feels compelled to investigate when a young man she knows is suspected of murder. The book works fine as a standalone.
When thirtysomething Carly Hale's husband died in a tragic accident, she moved back to her hometown of Balsam Dell, Vermont and opened Carly's Grilled Cheese Eatery.
In time Carly's grief subsided, and she started dating an electrician named Ari Mitchell. Carly and Ari are now in a serious relationship, and very happy together.
Carly's restaurant has become quite popular, and she currently employs assistant manager Valerie Wells;
part-time server Suzanne Rivers;
and grill cook/aspiring chef Grant Robinson, who'll soon be off to culinary school.
In addition, a young man called Ross Baxter, who's saving up for college, delivers food from Carly's Grilled Cheese Eatery to elderly residents of Balsam Dell.
Ross is personable, and all the senior citizens like him except for one grumpy woman, Mrs. Octavia Gray. Ross confides in Carly that Mrs. Gray called his grandmother, and complained that Ross was rude, spied on her, and ate some of her chips - none of which is true.
Carly offers to have the food delivered to Mrs. Gray by someone else, but Ross insists he'll do it, because his grandmother is a stickler about respecting your elders.
The next day, when Ross delivers Mrs. Gray's Smoky Steals the Bacon sandwich, with extra chips, he finds Mrs. Gray dead.....her head bashed in with a frying pan. Police Chief Fred Holloway takes Ross in for questioning, and Carly fears the young man will be arrested for murder.
Carly is certain Ross is innocent, so she decides to investigate herself, against the advice of all her friends and family. Carly's previous investigations endangered her life, and everyone fears this could happen again.
Carly learns that the victim, Mrs. Octavia Gray, was disliked by almost everyone in Balsam Del. So Carly enlists the help of journalist Don Frasco, who's always looking for a story, to help her investigate.
Carly manages to interview and collect information about a number of possible suspects, including:
Tara Gray Shepard - Octavia's stepdaughter, who's opening a pocketbook store called Pugs and Purses. Tara resented Octavia for giving away expensive handbags that had belonged to Tara's deceased mother.
Sawyer Gray - Octavia's stepson, who needed money to finance his kitchen supplies store, and might have expected to benefit from Octavia's will.
Mrs. Imogene Hughes and her adult son Mark Hughes - Octavia's neighbors, who were forced to move a fence at Octavia's insistence.
Lois Feeney - a woman whose husband had an affair with Octavia.
In fact, in her younger days, Octavia had targeted many married men, so any number of women resented her.
In between running her restaurant and investigating Octavia's death, Carly visits with her mother Rhonda; hangs out with her best friend Gina; chitchats with her landlady Joyce; plays with her pooch Havarti; and plans for the future with her boyfriend Ari. Carly also makes the acquaintance of baker Nina Cyr, and considers featuring Nina's specialty cookies in Carly' Grilled Cheese Eatery.
This is a good addition to the grilled cheese mysteries, with recipes for Raspberry Sizzle and Zesty Pesto grilled cheese sandwiches.

Thank you Netgalley and Beyond the Page for the ARC of this book. This was an honest review.
It is impossible to forget the characters who work at Amateur Sleuth's Carly's Grilled Cheese shop. Along with the delicious grilled cheese, the atmosphere of the shop alone makes it a very comforting place to return to. Carly doesn't think there is any harm in carefully questioning the victim's enemies to check motives and challenge their explanations to the point of being just a tad noisy in my opinion, but as her heart is in the right place, she will do anything to save the victim she knows is innocent. This was a heartbreaking conclusion that was nonetheless satisfying in its own way. Can't wait to read the next book.
This is a Cozy Mystery, and this is the fourth book in the Grilled Cheese Mysteries series. I have read the first three books in this series, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone. I love all the characters in this book, and I loved the drama and mystery in this book. I loved all the older characters in this book. This book was just so much fun to read.
I really enjoy this series. Carly is a great main character, and I love the supporting cast, Ari, Gina, and the "grilled cheese crew." I was so happy to learn that we were going to get more sandwiches and mysteries in this series. In this story, we meet Ross, a young man who starts a delivery service, to make money for college, and who starts working with our team. When unfortunately, he comes across a dead body on one of his deliveries, a cranky older woman, whom he had had a bad experience with before, he becomes the main suspect. Carly feels bad, knows that Ross was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is determined to help. There are plenty of suspects and many things going on in Carly's personal life that move this story along and make you compelled to find out what's really happening. It was a good mystery. I do have quibble with this story and it's the heavy handed behavior of the police chief, a character we have known and loved in the past, and the way it drags down an otherwise engrossing cozy mystery. Of course, Carly gets creative to deal with the situation, but I feel it negatively affects the flow of the book. That being said, I am, as usual, craving grilled cheese, want to go to a party with all of Carly's friends, and look forward to an interesting future for a lot of our favorite characters! Thanks to #Netgally and #BeyondThePagePublishing for the opportunity to read.
Teenaged Ross has made a name for himself with his summer job, delivering food from local restaurants to senior citizens in the area who can’t/don’t want to pick up the orders themselves. Carly is thrilled to have him deliver her food, and he enjoys his work except for one woman who is nasty and hard to please. When the woman’s body is found while Ross is making deliveries, the police – and half the townspeople – think Ross has killed her. Carly is convinced the rumors aren’t true, so she sets out to prove his innocence.
I enjoyed the first three books in this series, and for some reason thought the series ended after the third book, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover this fourth book. I like Carly, her family and friends, and her staff. When the series started, I had trouble seeing success for an eatery with such a narrow focus, but in real life, many similar places have opened near us lately and seem to be making it work, so maybe the concept isn’t as crazy as it first appeared.
The murder victim here was a nasty woman with very few friends, so there were plenty of suspects to think about, although many of them were ruled out early in the investigation. I was wrong about the identity of the killer, and should probably have figured out the motive earlier than I did.
I hope the series continues, and look forward to reading the next book if it does.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
#BrieCarefulWhatYouWishFor #NetGalley is a fantastic addition to this series by Linda Reilly. Carly Hale is a solid character, she's easy to like, and it's a pleasure to catch up with her in this fourth book in the series. Ross is a delivery driver for Carly and she's pleased with all the compliments she receives about him. Of course, there's always that one person who complains, and when that customer is found, dead, well, Ross becomes a suspect and Carly is determined to prove his innocence.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book, and to the author, for writing such a wonderful series.
This is the fourth book in the Grilled Cheese Mystery series. I've read all the prior books, but I think it would be easy for new readers to jump right in with this one. Carly Hale has been a widow for two years and is trying to move on in her life with a move to Balsam Dell, Vermont and opening a grilled cheese restaurant. The restaurant is doing well, and her employees have become friends. Carly works out an arrangement with a young man raising money for college by delivering food to the elderly to include her restaurant as one of the participating eateries. Things go well until Ross finds the body of a difficult customer when delivering her lunch and becomes the prime suspect in her death. Against the objections of her friends and the local police chief, Carly is determined to find the real killer. I think it's interesting that Chief Holloway is adamant that Carly stays out of it but doesn't seem to do much investigating on his own unless Carly brings information to his attention!
I have enjoyed all the books in this fun culinary cozy mystery series, and this one is no exception. I like that her boyfriend, Ari, strikes a balance between worrying about Carly and supporting her in her sleuthing. The victim had plenty of enemies and Carly doesn't see the harm in carefully questioning them to look for motives and challenge their alibis. I was very surprised when the identity of the killer was revealed, so I would have found myself in a risky predicament, just like Carly did! I really enjoyed the overall ending to the book and look forward to more in this series. Beware that the wonderful descriptions of food and the recipes at the end will make you hungry!
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
Carly Hale's Grilled Cheese Eatery is her dream come true. She and Grant Robinson, "grill cook extraordinaire", assistant manager Valerie Wells, and part-time server, Suzanne Rivers work together like a well-oiled machine. Ross Baxter wanted a way to earn money for college so he started Fab Food on Wheels. He picks orders from several restaurants, including the Grilled Cheese Eatery, and delivers to his clientele, mostly senior citizens.
Ross has one very difficult customer, Octavia Gray. She had several complaints about Ross but she kept calling for delivery. Ross arrives right on time with her perfect order but when he arrives he finds Mrs. Gray dead on the floor. Soon the police and many residents of Balsam Dell believe he killed her. Carly thinks they are all crazy so she decides to find the true killer so Ross can get back to work and off to college. She soon learns the woman had made a ton of enemies over the years and whoever murdered her may be ready to grill Carly and that's no cheese.
_____
I am happy this series found a new home at Beyond the Page Publishing and that we can return to Balsam Dell Vermont and Carly's Grilled Cheese Eatery.
Ms. Reilly has created a great cast of characters. Carly is a strong protagonist who can't stay out of Chief of Police Fred Holloway's investigations. He is dating her assistant manager Valerie Wells so Carly hopes she will get some inside information. Instead, Valerie along with the rest of Carly's staff and her boyfriend Ari Mitchell try to convince her to leave the case to the police. Her BFF Gina Tomasso though is ready to help her investigate any way she can. Ross Baxter is a nice addition to the group. The young man is a hard worker and polite. How anyone could believe he was a killer makes no sense. These characters are well-developed and engaging. I have been invested in their lives since book 1, Up to No Gouda.
Octavia Gray was not a nice person which means plenty of suspects and motives. Carly did her best to pare them down but took some real risks as she repeatedly questioned people to try to make clues fit together. Ms. Reilly set up some interesting red herrings and I fell for every one. I knew both Carly and I were missing something but the actual killer wasn't even on my radar. The twists at the end were stellar. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor.
There is a wonderful subplot with Ari and Carly. It had me captivated almost as much as the mystery. It came together in the final chapter along with other good news. I am excited about the future for Carly and all her friends. They are like one big family and I love that.
Brie Careful What You Wish For is a delightfully delicious read. From the wonderful characters to the twisted mystery to the yummy grilled cheese sandwiches and soups, I was all in on this terrific addition to the series. I can't wait to see what Ms. Reilly grills up for her readers to enjoy next.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Another good addition to the series. I love how their lives progress in the books - it’s not the same stagnant, will-they-won’t-they – Carly and Ari’s relationship progresses, as do other relationships, and the restaurant staff grows, too. The mystery was interesting with lots of red herrings to keep you guessing. The solution at the end between the two characters with a letter left for them was bittersweet and is a good reminder not to hold grudges.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
I was wondering if there would be a fourth book in this series, I figured at this point there wouldn't be cause of the time that has passed since the third so imagine my joy seeing this on NetGalley! I do think that for a 33 year old that the main cause after acts and skews a little older but it doesn't bug me in this book. I do like all the characters here , her friends, partner, and workers at her restaurant. the mystery was interesting too. I didn't guess who or why so that was kind of nice. I think this was a great addition to the series and I hope we get a little more of Havarti in the nextbook. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for for my honest opinion.
This is a fun, entertaining read. Carly is an interesting, relatable, complex, intriguing, entertaining character. The mystery was well done and I enjoyed all the twists and turns. I enjoyed the friendship, family and romance aspects of the story. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The beauty of this story is how very relatable the characters and the storyline are. Grilled cheese is often associated with comfort food, although the author did add a nice twist to that offering. With that said, while reading this story, I stopped at the bistro in my town known for comfort food. While there I could practically see this story unfold with the kind staff, the yummy food, and the town gossip. I think the author did a really nice job of building a story we can relate too and making in come alive for us. Of course, there was no mystery in my small-town bistro like the latest that Carly finds herself in the middle of. Before we have a victim, Carly is promising herself that her crime fighting days are behind her. It took very little encouragement before her kind heart and curiosity threw her into the middle of another. This time it is another murder, and she works with the suspect and believes in his innocence. However, and on this I can relate to Carly too, those in her life care about her and try to dissuade her from investigating. We’ve all been in that situation where our loved ones want to protect us, sometimes from ourselves so Carly’s situation is ours too. Let’s get back to the mystery for a minute, the author did a fabulous job of leading us through a who done it full with suspense. On the outside, Carly’s friend is the perfect suspect but dig a little deeper and you have a menu full of suspects to choose from. In addition to suspects, this book contains a great cast of characters from the worrying mom to the slightly overprotective boyfriend to friends and employees who are like family. The characters are all well developed and come to feel like friends, maybe because they remind us of our own friends. A new character is introduced in this story who may help or not, the jury is still out. One thing I find entertaining in mystery novels are the types of people we see dawn the cap of amateur sleuth and how successful they are. Again, the people in many of the books are average people with real jobs who can’t resist a good who done it and honestly want to help. These characters, including Carly, need to come to terms with the consequences of putting themselves at risk and the turmoil for their loved ones. I like how the author did not gloss over that subject which may be a bit of a downer, instead she handles it with aplomb, another thing that is relatable to all. Prior to reading this book, I had read another book that I completely loved. To anyone who is even a casual reader, you will understand when I say it is sometimes hard not to be let down after a super book. Hoping to find another book as good as the last I read, I chose this one and was not let down at all. Of course, now the bar is higher for the next book but finding a great book is half the fun. The other half is enjoying a great story like this one with an ending that leaves you feeling good. Thanks to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Thank you, NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for this ARC.
This series is one of my most favorite cozy mysteries series, so I was extremely excited to read the 4th book. This book did not disappoint! I
Carly is back with not just her delicious sounding sandwiches but with another murder. Carly is warned by the Chief of Police to stay out of investigation, but Carly doesn't listen which is good for us readers. The victim of the murder was a woman that most seemed to hate so the suspect list was pretty long. I even started to hate her from what I was reading about her. I'm not saying she deserved to be murdered but II can see how she was not well liked.
I had a feeling of who was the murder and I will admit that I was wrong. I love the fact that I was wrong because it was fun to find out who the murderer was and have that "what?!" moment. It made me think back and wonder how I didn't guess.
This book also introduced a couple of new characters and I truly enjoyed getting to know them. I do wish that there was more of Gina in this book, I love Carly's friendship with her. and enjoyed the moments that they were together in this book. I also enjoy Carly's relationship with her boyfriend, Ari. I do wonder how frustrating it must be for Ari with all the close calls that Carly has had because of her investigating. Carly is just such an enjoyable character and I pretty much enjoy her interactions with the other characters. I can see how people open up to her.
Again, I love this series but I have to say that so far this book is my favorite in the series. So far! It kept my interest from the start to end. I can't wait for the next one in this series!
When I found out that Linda Reilly would be having a fourth Grilled Cheese Mystery, I immediately requested this book from Net Galley so I could read an advance copy and then review it.
I absolutely loved the first 3 mysteries in this series, and I knew that I would love the new chapter in Carly Hale’s adventures. I was not mistaken.
The book flowed smoothly from the beginning, and it gripped my attention all the way through. It was just so nice to get reacquainted with the characters that I had befriended before, and to catch up on their lives. There are also new loveable characters, and then there is one you love to hate. Linda really does know how to describe a meanie!
One of the things I love about Linda’s writing is that she intertwines kindness in her story. This is because she is a very kind person herself, and it does show. I was delighted that she visited my book club via Zoom last year. She writes about what she knows, and her descriptions are fun and vivid. I am so glad to read anything she writes.
I tried to guess whodunnit, but it was impossible for me…twists and turns provided tense moments, and when you thought you knew who the murderer was, it turns out it was someone else entirely. I was delighted with all the wonderful news we learn about at the end.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cozy mysteries, and also encourage reading the previous 3 books.
Thank you to Net Galley, to Beyond The Page and to Linda Reilly for allowing me to read this advance copy and leave a personal review.
3.5-3.7 stars. I’m still liking this series though I was annoyed at Carly in this one. It seems she can’t understand why EVERYONE is concerned about putting herself in danger and possibly getting killed! The mystery was good, with lots of suspects, twists etc and a lovely surprise at the end.
I was so happy to see this series picked back up since I’m sure the author’s got more stories to tell about these characters. I was really pleased with the outcome of this book as far as Carly and Ari’s relationship went. As for the murder, I was totally surprised at the reveal and its why of it as well.
Carly’s got an amazing team working for her and now maybe she won’t have to worry so much when it’s time for Grant to head off for culinary school. I can’t wait to read more in the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO BOTH LINDA REILLY AS WELL AS BEYOND THE PAGE BOOKS PUBLISHING - WITHOUT EITHER, I WOULDN'T GET TO CONTINUE ON WITH THIS SERIES I LOVE!!!
PREMISE: In this series we follow Carly Hale who runs a Grilled Cheese Eatery in Balsam Dell, and don't forget her gorgeous dog, cutely-named Harvati! In this book, delivery boy Ross Baxter, comes into the eatery sad. An elderly woman he delivered to, Mrs Gray, has complained about him, saying that he's been spying on her. Carly brushes it off, knowing Ross is a good man - but the following day Mrs Gray is found dead, and Ross, is the number #1 suspect. Knowing he's innocent, Carly trecks out to do what everyone tells her not too - get involved and get to the bottom of this mystery.
THOUGHTS: I LOVE this series so much! Every book (including this one) so far, has received 5 stars from me! Linda Reilly just knows what I love to read, what can I say? I just can't fault the series! I really enjoyed the mystery with this one. No one likes Mrs Gray, so everyone's a suspect. What they uncover is really intriguing also! So, so so much fun and such an intriguing read! I do wish Beyond the Pages Publishing could have kept the same "mass market" paperback design the other covers had, as now the collection doesn't look uniform. But in saying that, I am eternally thankful that (at this stage) they rescued the series for 2 more books (this one and book 5).
"Brie Careful What You Wish For (Grilled Cheese Mysteries #4)" by Linda Reilly is another jump into this grilled cheese filled cozy mystery series. Have to say that this one was missing a bit of the new grilled cheese creation process that the previous books have. It had a couple of paragraphs about a grilled cheese with raspberry jam or preserves but it was brought up as often or detailed.
The mystery was pretty typical for this series and a good cozy mystery. I think I've started picking up on the patterns this series follows. With that being said, I still wasn't totally sure who did it. So, it was a "Ha! I knew it!" moment.
I haven't been terribly into my cozies lately and quite often feel disappointed. However, this one was fun! I did deduct a star because I guessed whodunnit less than halfway through, but I still had a great time... And now I want a grilled cheese!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Linda Reilly for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for Brie Careful What You Wish For coming out April 9, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is actually the first book I’ve read by this author. I didn’t read the other books in the series, but I was interested in the description. I love cozy food mysteries. I think Carly is a really fun character! I really enjoyed the mystery. I loved the setting. I loved it! I thought the writing was great. It put me in a good mood. I definitely want to check out more books in this series.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy food mysteries!
After three books in Linda Reilly's A Grilled Cheese Mystery series, Carly Hale has finally understood that putting herself in danger while trying to help solve a murder affects not only herself, but everyone who loves her. That includes her coworkers at the grilled cheese restaurant she owns, her close friends and, of course, her mother and her boyfriend, all of whom implore her to be more careful. The police chief has also forbidden her to participate in the investigation, even though she has obtained valuable information for him in the past. But in Brie Careful What You Wish For, she knows she can't just stand by and let Ross, her young delivery man, be accused of killing one of her customers, especially since Carly has a knack for getting people to talk to her.
This is a well-written, fun-to-read, light cozy mystery where Carly and the supporting characters seem real and mostly relatable. Except for the murder victim, of course, who was vehemently disliked by almost everyone who knew her. That makes for multiple suspects and motives and keeps the plot interesting. There is also more than one romance to tick that necessary box. It's a quick read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I don't know if there will be more books in the series, but I would love to find out whether Carly finds a way to solve the next mystery without any danger (there's not a lot in this book) and whether she and her boyfriend can make a go of it, despite Carly's intermittent reluctance.
My review is based on a complimentary pre-release copy of the book.
Every book has been fantastic . The covers are adorable and deceptively innocent. What you get is a great mystery, lovable characters that make you laugh and cry, and recipes that make you want anything with cheese. Please let there be another in the series! So enjoyable
What could be cozier than a mystery involving a grilled cheese restaurant? This book (and the previous three) are exactly what cozies are meant to be. Carly is a strong, capable business owner & accidental sleuth because murders keep involving her restaurant. This is probably my favorite of the series, it has such a crazy ending/motive for the murder.
A bonus is there’s some delicious sounding sandwiches that will make you very hungry!
Thank you Netgalley & Beyond the Page Publishing for the E-ARC of the book for an honest review.
