This is my first book by this author and I need more! This was such a sweet story and I was absolutely captured with the storyline from the very beginning. It is also set in one of my favorite states I have lived in North Carolina so it was easy to love the setting. The story begins by introducing us to Abigail who has a past that sadly in those times would have made her damaged goods. In order to bring dignity back to her family her mother is trying to push her towards this older gentleman who is yuck, for lack of a better word, and her father is trying to prevent that from happening at all costs. Garrett who is AMAZING and completely swoon-worthy comes into the picture as a guardian to Abigail.
Oh goodness the story is full of redemption for both Abigail and Garrett who have these heavy pasts to overcome. Despite them knowing that God has forgiven them they sure do have a hard time to letting go and forgiving themselves. Definitely very relatable characters. The romance is sweet and I thought it was perfect. It definitely kept me turning the pages.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and I can't wait to read more from this author and this series. If you are looking for a new historical fiction romance I definitely suggest you grab this one!

Follow the young adults as they maneuver through mistakes and matters of the heart.

“An Unlikely Arrangement” is an inspirational slow-burning romance taking place in the early 1900s. I love the southern setting and especially the historical Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. (I’ve toured the beautiful mansion and grounds!)
Garret is easy to connect with from the beginning, and I cared about and rooted for him to have a good outcome. It took a bit longer to connect with Abigail, but eventually began to redeem herself with considerable growth.
As with most Christian fiction stories, my favorite element was the thread of faith throughout. I love being inspired and moved by the character transformations. This is a sweet redemption story by a new-to-me author, and I look forward to more in this series.

The overall story was good. There was great Christian content throughout. I loved Garret’s character and felt sorry for him with all the guilt he felt over his sister’s condition. I also loved his interactions with Abigail. I didn’t love Abigail, she was okay but got on my nerves at times with her behavior. I think that was the authors intention but still. I had trouble connecting with her. The last 25% was really good.

This book brought back memories of how and why I started reading books. Such a sweet swoon-worthy romance and so relatable. Poor Abigail feels like she’s damaged goods and Garret has his own monsters to fight with. Both thinking they’re not good enough, they are struggling to forgive themselves, well knowing that God has already looked past their faults. I love a good redemption arc and I enjoyed reading this book on top of that I found a new Author whose work I want to explore.

Set in a most favorite place of mine, An Unlikely Arrangement by Cindy Patterson shows a great accuracy in detail. I can visualize the rooms in the Biltmore when they are mentioned. The main characters Abigail and Garrett both have regrets in their past. Even when they know God has forgiven them, they have trouble forgiving themselves. Can they forgive themselves in time to move forward to a life together? A copy was provided for my review with no requirement for a favorable review. All opinions are mine and are freely given.

This book! ::dreamy sigh:: I had not discovered this author until now, so this was a first read for me. I was not disappointed! This is the telling of two stories, of Abigail and Garrett, that reflects so deeply the Father's love and forgiveness for us. Both MC have walked their own paths and when those paths cross they are forced to face what they think they know of themselves, one another, and their Creator. This book is a breath of fresh air within the romance realm, keeping you glued to the pages while taking you on subtle twists and turns throughout as the story unfolds. You will not leave disappointed!

A great story! I loved the characters, especially Garrett. Many secrets among family that kept Abigail in the dark. God’s grace and forgiveness is woven throughout the story and done beautifully. A slow building romance that keeps the reader turning pages and rooting for Garrett and Abigail. I loved reading about the Biltmore and found that to be a fun bit of the story. This is a fun story that kept me entertained to the last page.

Loved reading the inspirational and captivating story. To escape William Arendell's marriage proposal, Abigail willingly goes to her Aunt's house for the summer in hopes of rekindling her romance with Randal Thorne, but Garrett is tasked with keeping Abigail from harm. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting romance story.

When I saw that this was set around Biltmore, I was immediately intrigued. Biltmore is a gorgeous place and would make a great setting for a book. This story was an extremely sweet historical fiction romance. The time period is set in the early 1900s and follows Abigail Dupree as she navigates societal expectations and customs around courting and marriage. While I disliked Abigail at the beginning of the story (mostly for what she is described as- “spoiled, entitled, bratty”), there is a very clear character arc that has you rooting for her before the end! Garrett Barringer is the highlight of this story, along with her father. The prolonged time it takes them to admit their love to each other showed that they (especially Abigail) truly had each others’ best interests at heart. I do wish the end hadn’t felt so rushed, but was glad with the wrap up overall!

Y’all, I am totally in my historical romance era, and loving every second of it
This was a solid 4.5 stars for me. I was wished away by Cindy Patterson‘s writings, straight to the Biltmore estate in the early 1900s. The detail that went into the story was phenomenal. I felt as if I was right there along with Abigail and Garrett.
This was an inspirational and captivating from the start. I love that this was a Christian historical fiction and truly enjoyed the faith element throughout the book. Waiting on God’s plan and timing is the message I got from the story.
This is book one of the Brides of Biltmore series and I cannot wait to read the rest of the books. I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it.

"An Unlikely Arrangement" by Cindy Patterson is set in North Carolina. The heroine Abigail has made some mistakes in her past. With her wish to honor her parents she may end up having to marry one of two men that do not treat women well. In order to give his daughter a choice, Abigail's father hires Garrett to be her guardian as she travels to Asheville, NC to visit with her aunt.
In Asheville, Abigail is able to visit the beautiful Biltmore Mansion and meet many people from Garrett's life. She connects with an old suitor who she feels can redeem her mistakes. In the end, Abigail learns so much about herself, her God and redemption in ways she never thought were possible.

The writing is mediocre. Her characters don't reflect the time or class. The heroine is sassy and defensive. The antagonist immediately comes off as pushy and unsavory. The hero is perfect. The author makes these characters so one dimensional., not really believable.

Headstrong, yet excited to see the world. Interested, yet wanting to please and obey her parents. Loving, yet striving to find the balance between love and obedience. Abigail is everything so many young women find themselves to be. How to navigate the life before her and still be who she feels she really is inside is the struggle that is taking over her life.
Her family has arranged her marriage, as is acceptable for young women like her. But, she cannot stand the man. He is unkind and arrogant. Why would her father choose this? She could clearly see her mother choosing this arrangement because it is just what anyone of high society would desire.
When Garrett Barringer comes to work for Abigail’s father, everything goes off-kilter. Her heart seems to not listen to her head, which reminds her constantly of what her family requires but also of what she wants for herself. Garrett is everything her beau is not – kind, respectful, considerate of her and her family, aware of what is around them, and so much more. When Mr. Barringer is to accompany Abigail to her aunt’s house, Abigail finds herself stuck between her heart and her responsibility.
I was intrigued by idea that this story would include the Biltmore. It is a place I desire to visit and so that was definitely a pull for me. I was a bit disappointed that the story only included the Biltmore once in a while but when it did, the descriptions were lovely. The inclusion of Alice Roosevelt was also a fun little point of the story. It made for some additional historical elements.
The story was a historical romance with a tad bit of Christianity woven in. I could have certainly done with more of the faith element. It would have definitely made this a more applicable story. The idea of waiting on God’s timing for those things that you desire is really nice and I found that was implied in the story. I often find myself struggling with waiting and following God’s plan so I could certainly relate to Abigail’s character in that regard.
This was an enjoyable story and it was quite an easy read. It flew along and the characters were fun. I found that Garrett Barringer was definitely my favorite because he seems to embody the godly characteristics that a man after God’s own heart should be striving for. He wasn’t perfect but he kept trying. That was a nice element to the story. Overall, it was a worthwhile read.

Family secrets have a way of affecting our lives even when we know nothing of them. Abigail DuPree is a young woman with a scandal in her past that she is sure her mother is still punishing her for. Why else would her mother insist that she continue to entertain a man for a husband that she finds despicable and makes her skin crawl. Her father, though mostly on her side, still insists they allow her mother her whims. However, Abigail is most determined to not wed any man, unless it is the one whom she believes she loves from five years past.
Enter Garrett Barringer who is running from his past. He and Abigail bump into one another well before her father hires him to be her guardian. And Garrett feels especially protective of Abigail even though she can be quite frustrating with her biting tongue and her constant habit of going out and about without a chaperone.
All Garrett knows of the situation surrounding Abigail is the bits and pieces her father has told him. It is not much at first, her father is keeping many secrets close to his chest. As Garrett and Abigail continue to get to know one another, out of necessity and Garrett's job, they both come to the realization that maybe redemption from their pasts is possible, along with love for the future.
This book is a romantic read, between two unlikely characters. Garrett was full blown protective in some of the situations, which I liked. I was frustrated along with Abigail about her situation, especially since she was a woman and for that time women had much less freedom. I didn't understand her mother, or at times her father, when they seemed to ignore her very fearful feelings of the match she did not want. She was trapped and that made her situation all the more palpable to me as a reader. The mystery thread and the eventual setting of Biltmore moved the last half of this story quickly.

Cindy Patterson is a new author for me, whose literary offerings are generally set in contemporary America. "An Unlikely Arrangement" takes place in 1902 North Carolina. Abigail Dupree, impetuous and the author of all her troubles, is assigned a male "companion" of sorts to ensure she doesn't find herself in deeper waters with her "love" Randall Thorne. At least that's why I think Garrett Barringer was introduced, at least at first. Furthermore, Miss Dupree believes she can convince Thorne to love her. That's not how it works, of course. It defies belief she's even willing to attempt this after being used and discarded by this shining example of humanity. There's also an undesirable suitor, William Arendell.
What follows is an unlikely series of events, some downright implausible. While at a ball, Abigail dances barefoot to spare her aching feet. This is both charming and enterprising. From a historical perspective, it also doesn't happen. In addition, a non-related single male is not a suitable chaperon for a young woman, and they certainly don't sleep in adjoining tents. That would destroy a lady's reputation, or in Abigail's case, make it even worse.
As a reader, I will overlook the occasional grammatical error. However, as the case is here, there are a multitude of them. There are misused words, missing commas, or commas where there should be none. This lack of editing distracts from the story, and I find myself using my mental red pen.
That being said, there are things I enjoyed about this tale. It is clean with no violence. Christian elements are gentle and appropriate. Romans 3:23 is particularly meaningful. A few historical figures are mentioned or make onscreen appearances, notably Alice Roosevelt, the Vanderbilts, and Biltmore Estate. Frederick Law Olmsted gets an honorable mention, too (he designed my city's park system.) I also liked Rose. If there's a story about her, and editing improves, I'm willing to give this author another try.

That would destroy a lady's reputation, or in Abigail's case, make it even worse.
As a reader, I will overlook the occasional grammatical error. However, as the case is here, there are a multitude of them. There are misused words, missing commas, or commas where there should be none. This lack of editing distracts from the story, and I find myself using my mental red pen.
That being said, there are things I enjoyed about this tale. It is clean with no violence. Christian elements are gentle and appropriate. Romans 3:23 is particularly meaningful. A few historical figures are mentioned or make onscreen appearances, notably Alice Roosevelt, the Vanderbilts, and Biltmore Estate. Frederick Law Olmsted gets an honorable mention, too (he designed my city's park system.) I also liked Rose. If there's a story about her, and editing improves, I'm willing to give this author another try.

When I started reading An Unlikely Arrangement I had love on my mind. Eleven years ago today my husband and I said, “I do” and every year I think back fondly to our courtship. Much like Garrett and Abigail, our meet cute wasn’t conventional but God knew what he was doing bringing us into one another’s lives in His perfect timing. The same rings true with Abigail and Garrett.
This novel is a refreshing change of pace from the suspenseful and emotional novels that I’ve been reading lately, with a calming vibe that washed over me as I read. I found myself quickly picking it up as soon as I sat down from work and easily getting lost in the narrative.
Abigail has almost a childlike quality about her which tends to show itself when she makes a few unwise decisions, or when she is quarreling with her overbearing mother. Seeing her growth over the length of the novel was a satisfying journey. Garrett is the perfect partner to pair with the resilient Abigail and is the kind of man that has graced my dreams for as long as I can remember. A knight in shining armor that allows the heroine to be her own person while always be there to catch her when she falls, Garrett is my kind of hero.

Set in the early 1900s in North Carolina, Abigail is trying to salvage her reputation in a way that matches her fierce independent nature. With an older suitor set up by her mother, she heads back to Asheville to find her first love and convince him to marry her. Enter Garrett, an honorable man trusted by her father to accompany her as a chaperone to keep her from making any further mistakes.
I very much wanted to love this story, a period romance with a sweet MMC. I struggled with the language and sentence structure that kept taking me out of the story. The language would switch from older English to present day. Every sentence would be so overly detailed and sometimes with wording that didn’t make any sense. There was a lot of telling instead of showing and repetitive situations that I just didn’t think helped further the story. I would have loved to see more interactions with other characters that didn’t result in Abigail crying, holding back tears or running away immediately. Also, less internal monologuing and more actual conversation would have been great.
As for what I enjoyed, I really liked the character of Garrett. He was caring and sweet. I was intrigued by the setting of Biltmore and loved the detail surrounding it and the area. While I don’t necessarily look for religion in romance books, it was nice to see Christianity involved (albeit sometimes randomly placed). The addition of Alice Roosevelt was very refreshing and nice to see an interaction with a woman that could become a budding friendship. The relationship between Abigail’s parents, her father especially, is so loving and it’s wonderful to see that for this time period. I had expected some closure with the buildup of Rose, but the ending was cute. I wish we could have had more, but I was still happy with it. This book is the definition of slow-burn romance.

Bottom line: I would rate this a 3.5⭐️ and I would read more by this author.
This book was an interesting read. While it may not be my favorite book by the author, I did love the originality of the storyline, the setting, and by time I finished reading, I was satisfied with how the story ended.
I did struggle with the pacing, the first half felt slow and slightly repetitive as it set the stage for the second half where Abigail Dupree’s character grew and matured and the story progressed at a better speed. I also wouldn’t have minded if the ending of the story could have been a little longer instead of speeding up and wrapping up in the last dozen pages.
There were a few details that didn’t seem to fit with the time period, but there were two things that kept me from being able to fully immerse in the story. The first being that in a time where virtue and reputation were so protected (and the first few chapters made a big emphasis on this point), Abigail was sent off on a trip without a maid to chaperone. While it made sense that her own maid wasn’t able to go with her, to not have another lower servant accompanying her as a walk-on (to borrow the stage term) seemed at odds with the time period and the goal of protecting her.
The other detail was how often Abigail Dupree touched the arm (etc) of a man she didn’t really know. While the reader quickly learns how impulsive Abigail is, it just felt a little too much, too soon for the time period, and the mentioned guilt about her past.
I did enjoy the second half of the book and was glad I kept reading There here were many complexities to the story that were thoughtfully added and addressed later in the book, which kept me coming back to read more. The theme of redemption was tastefully woven through the lives of Abigail and those that love her, and I loved it.
I’m glad I had the opportunity to read this story and would read more by this author in the future.

An Unlikely Arrangement is such a fun historical fiction novel that was sweet and easy to read. I enjoyed every word of it. The characters really seemed to pop off the pages and come to life before me. I loved our two main characters.
Both of the main characters have things in their past that they regret. And they have plans for their future. Plans that don’t involve them being drawn to each other, let alone falling in love. Plus of course, there’s the fact that Garrett works for Abigail’s father. And that Abigail is supposed to save her family and their reputation by marrying well.
The book moved along at a good pace. The writing was clear and drew me in. It’s a Christian novel and you’ll be able to tell that. I really enjoyed the way the plot moved along. No big suspense or mysteries. Just a gentle romance and some run history thrown in.

This is a story of finding redemption. Both of the main characters need this redemption. The faith elements are very evident in this story.
There were a couple of things that bothered me. I needed a bit more back story. I needed to know more about Garrett’s actual job and actual role. I feel like there was a good bit of missing information. Overall it was a sweet story but I would have loved to see it more fleshed out. This was a sweet romance set in the late 1800s in the United States. I appreciate the setting as relatively rare since most romances from this time period seem to be set in England. The settings are beautiful. The Biltmore hotel is described in lovely detail and it made me feel as if I was there. The main female character is a bit of a brat but that is to be expected in this genre. They can't fall in love immediately or that would spoil the fun.
A few things about this story stretch belief. The first is that the heroine's father trusts the hero almost immediately upon meeting him and allows him to accompany his daughter on a trip through wilderness alone. The second is that the characters are Christian and speak as like modern evangelicals. They seem to believe that they have a personal relationship with God. Although this idea did start in the 1850s, it was not very popular until nearly 100 years later. People in this time period, especially the aristocracy, were just not that religious.

This book snagged my attention from the beginning and did not let go. It follows Abigal Dupree and Garrett Barringer as they navigate the whims of society. Abigail has been given away to a man she does not love to settle a deal her parents made. Garrett has been hired by Abigail's father to do a job he isn't qualified for. They are forced to spend time together due to circumstances beyond Abigail's control. As they get to know one another, they find out that maybe the other isn't as horrible as they originally thought. Abigail grew on me too as the book went on. In the beginning, I was not so sure of her but she does have character growth. Garrett was immediately likable from the beginning. This book is dual pov so we get to peek into the minds of both characters. This is a clean historical romance. It does have Christian themes and undertones that are wonderfully done. I truly enjoyed this book and will be looking forward to the others to come in this series.

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres. An Unlikely Arrangement by Cindy Patterson is the most recent book that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Brides of Biltmore series.
The book is set in 1902 and that is an Era that I really LOVE! Also, the Biltmore is also a place that I have always dreamed of visiting. I was immediately captivated by the storyline and it really made me feel like I was there! The 2 main characters, Abigail Dupree and Garrett Barringer met when Garrett takes a job with Abigail's father. Garrett is a young lawyer and Abigail finds herself very interested in him. Garrett and Abigail both have past and "baggage" that might hinder a true relationship between the 2. I was really happy for them as they worked through the baggage. The story has a strong faith message of "God's plans are Greater then our own plans". The book is a sweet romance with lots of fast paced action in the story. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction! WONDERFUL BOOK!

Abigail Dupree (Abby) is caught between marrying William Arendell , a despicable man, or Randall, the man who ruined her before breaking off their marriage. Throughout their encounters, Garrett is always a gentleman, constantly looking out for Abby, to keep her safe from harm. While she is childish at times, Abby is kind and friendly to her maid, Rose, and other staff in her home.
Thanks to her father’s arrangement, they are both forced into close proximity and get to know each other better. With Abby’s help, Garrett also learns to deal with his own guilt.
Overall, a good read and it has piqued my interest to read more Christian fiction / romance books.
