Breeds by Keith C. Blackboard and narrated by Sean Runnette is a real werewolf book! There is no fluffy romance but true gritty horror of gore, action, and savagery! This is not a real unique twist to the were genre that I found appealing too. A very fresh look at an old subject! Loved how the author developed the world and characters, even the animals.
The narration was perfect for this story!

Absolutely amazing!!! The most original werewolf book I have ever read. Full review to follow.

Updated Review:
BREEDS is a really tough book to write about with no spoilers! This was also one of those books: at times I found myself unable to put it down. At several points I was sobbing. I have been hesitant to start reading another book because thoughts about this one keep popping into my head. In short, this book was pretty amazing.

When you open the book, the first thing you see is a warning from the author that if you are a dog lover, do not read the book. I am an animal lover, but I decided to ignore the warning. And actually, I was glad that I did because what I expected to happen when I saw that warning was not what the book was about at all. I really would have hated to have missed this story because of what might have been.

I love stories that surprise me, and this one did! This is not your typical werewolf story that starts off with the protagonist camping out in the woods, gets bitten by a wolf and things get crazy from there. This is one of the most original werewolf stories I have ever read, totally unique. I would rate this one right up there with Stephen King’s Silver Bullet and Whitney Strieber’s The Wolven.

Inherent in the werewolf genre is the exploration of man’s animal nature and the conflict between the higher and lower selves. Keith Blackmore’s approach to this is both unique and multi-faceted. It is not as simple as just tossing around some anthropomorphic themes. This book forces us to look at questions of identity and community, and challenges assumptions about fitting in. It makes us ask which part of ourselves is the animal and which part the human…. and I am still not sure how I feel about the answer.

And, just for the record, I really would like to see a sequel to this. There is a some great back story here that would lend itself to more exploration. I’d love to hear more from and about some of the characters in this book. And filmmakers, if you are listening, this would make a GREAT movie!

Disclosure: A copy of this book was given to me by the author with no expectation of a review.

What a great spin on a werewolf book and pleasantly violent. I don’t want to discuss it too much in this review because some of the twists and changes are a bit surprising. If I had physically read this book I would’ve given it four stars . The audible version I listened to had some issues and I think it was mostly sound engineering. The narrator constantly sounded like he had a cotton in his mouth and you could hear the spit in his mouth, but he did a amazing job with the dialogue between characters. If you’re interested in this book I recommend reading it and skipping the audible.

For someone who is not a horror fan I really enjoyed this book. I read this book on audio the narrater did a great job. The book was extremely blood thirsty and at times funny. It always amazes me how when someone in a horror story is told to lock the doors and not go outside what do they do but go outside. I felt like screaming NO NO DON'T DO IT YOU KNOW YOU WILL DIE IF YOU DO but in this book it really didn't matter if you went outside or not. Damed if you do and Damed if you don't.

My original Breeds audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

If you love werewolf books, this is one you cannot pass up!  Set in a small, isolated town of Amherst Cove in Newfoundland the Warden, Borland is meddling dangerously with mother nature – he is creating a unique werewolf breed that will destroy everyone and everything.  Disillusioned with the hierarchy and rules of the werewolf world, Borland begins breeding a stronger, more deadly werewolf out of revenge.

Werewolves and Wardens, Kirk and Ross must enter Amherst and destroy Borland, a warden who doesn’t follow the rules.  Little did they know what Borland had done – with the help of a human, Ross and Kirk move to destroy Borland’s breeding successes and hide everything from the outside world.

What happens next is horrifying and goes against nature.  How many will survive the night?  And if Ross and Kirk manage to save the small cove, what happens next?  If they survive will they be able to retire with their scars and wounds or will they face the same type of fate as Borland?  Borland warned them - and now they are wondering what if!?!

Action packed and riveting, Keith Blackmore weaves a story that takes the listener deeper into the werewolf world than any other author.  Masterfully weaving horror, he is reminiscent of other horror writers who have captivated readers with everyday occurrences and objects.  Blackmore, however, is much more intense, his monsters are more deadly and provides a unique take on the werewolf tale.    Blackmore has strong writing skills, moving the story at a steady pace building his characters thoroughly and providing twists that will leave the listener shaking their head in shock.

Sean Runnette does an excellent reading of Blackmore’s Breeds, Book 1.  His ability to step into the book and inject the emotion, danger and fear is amazing.  His pitch is perfect and he has a skill that projects the right amount of cynical and sarcastic tones.   Runnette’s voice is sure, confident and calming.  I could listen to him for hours.

This is truly an excellent book if you enjoy werewolves, horror and action.   It is truly unique!

There were no issues with production, everything was clear and concise.  No background issues.

Loved it!
This book is the first in a series so it will be semi-open ended. There is SOME resolve of the book 1 story but you'll be dying for book 2. Very much like a good tv series, season one resolved a season story line but the larger series arc continues. I've read Blackmore's zombie series Mountain Man and to be honest although I loved it very much I was hesitant to follow into this new wolfy world. I'm not sure why, I guess I was such a big Mountain Man fan I didn't want it tainted by something not as good. Turns out I should have had more faith in this writer. He is not a one hit wonder. This new world is richly layered, full of interesting characters (human and otherwise), and full of thrills and chills. There were even some tears - you'll know where when you get there. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this book as either a stand alone or as the start of a fantastic and gruesome new series.

No politics, no sexism, only briefly alluded to sex (thank goodness), no horrible romantic sub story, minor swearing, graphic violence but not gore porn, and a fantastic narrator that never annoys.

This story surprised me as I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. The first thing I came across when starting this book was a warning to avoid if I was an animal lover. Though I'm crazy about dogs, the warning made me grin in anticipation. Maybe I have messed up reading tastes but I just love when an author has the guts to go there. I enjoy indiscriminate killing in my stories. It raises the stakes to know that no one's safe. Apart from Kyle, Max was my favorite character. I longed to reach into the book and give him a hug. There was a lot of death and gore(hope you have a strong stomach). You'll get frostbite reading the descriptions of the snow storm. At a few points the prose seemed a little awkward. Some paragraphs could've been broken up into smaller parts but nothing too serious. At the end, I felt a bit like the story wasn't quite done yet. (Sequel**hint, hint, nudge, nudge**)I don't regret buying this book at all. Look forward to checking out more works from this author.

This would make a great film... if they made films without pretty young people. Not a character under 60, all of them foul mouthed country folk...not a paragraph goes by without a sphincter reference. I liked reading a genre book that doesn't bow to the tropes. Shame it didn't bother to include more active female characters. I would probably watch a sequel if it were a movie but prob won't read the second book.

4 stars for daring to be different.

Good story, but I did take a star for the dialogue. The background characters seemed fairly cookie cutter with very little variation. They were all of similar crusty curmudgeonly temperaments and moderately to extremely foul-mouthed. I'm not a prude and can take quite a bit, but this was only the second time I can recall a book breaking the suspension of disbelief because of the over-the-top use of curse words. It takes a lot to offend me. I wasn't offended...it just wasn't believable.

Aside from that detraction the story, setting and expansion of the Were lore were pretty good. A good setup in the beginning with the foundation for the story based on a bit of a twist on the werewolf standards. I enjoyed that. The playing off of that throughout the remainder of the story was pretty well handled, and I enjoyed what is often cliche' with the storm that comes with the .

See the quality of the cover image? That's exactly the quality you should expect from what's behind the cover. The five star reviews are either from paid reviewers or the author. 5 stars means "it was amazing". The Shining is 5 stars, Great Expectations is 5 stars, you people think Breeds is at that level!? Insane. Don't waste your time, check out Wolf Hunt or The Wolf's Hour if you're looking for a good werewolf story.

So, overall I am going 3. I would give the sections (which there are many!) that explain walking in a blizzard a 2. We get it, it was hard to navigate and cold and windy and blah blah blah. Maybe because I live in WI and know what a blizzard is I did not need to hear about walking in so much. The rest of the book would have been a 4. It was a bit on the choppy side, but a fun twist on werewolves. Could be fun if there was as second and see if it was any better.

I approached this read with some apprehension as the thought of a werewolf novel seemed a bit dated to me. I am very glad to say this book was far from that and the author bought werewolves screaming into 2017 for me.

Breeds in one of those style of books I love. It is a fantastic blend of suspense, thrills, horror and the type of sarcastic humour that leaves a smile on your dial long after the book is put down. This is the first book of Keith C. Blackmore that I have read and if the rest of his offerings are the same he will quickly jump up into my favourite author list.

So if you are in the mood for some laughs and a battle in the snow to see who is top dog then please do yourself a favour and give Breeds a go. I guarantee you wont be disappointed.

It's dark, grungy, and a neutral story telling in the sense that...people will die, and unlike many popular books, stories or shows it isn't afraid to kill those you get attached to.

For those who do like a dark story telling with cheesy horror troupes, good boys and of course a good werewolf story. It's a highly recommend. I've already got to book 3 of this series aha.

This was incredibly boring. It felt very 'short scary episode' for a like an adult, modern version of tales from the crypt where ever episode is a short story. Except unfortunately you would spend maybe 7 to 9 hours getting through this book instead of the 30-45 minutes watching a episode. This book was entirely too simple and straightforward to be able to stretch it long enough for a movie unless is a straight to TV short movie.

This was painfully simple. I really wished it would expand a bit more on just about everything. Have some more lead up with the plot with some world building would have been nice too. There is character building but it definitely didn't knock me out of my socks, it was very surface level and just enough to try and get you to maybe care about some of the essentials with the plot. The character building is just really rushed through though and it was very difficult to get attached to anything.

Honestly this book was a mess and felt like it was probably intended for some instant gratification or a junk food read because it does jump into the action and conflict immediately at the start and just doesn't stop with that fast paced approach.

Ive read plenty of junk food reads though and at minimum those at least tried to at first hook you in initially to get you to have fun with the junk food action. This book just didn't really pull any of that off and relied a lot on standard werewolf lore that is already represented in the media to save time on having to do any build up so it could jump right into the action. This approach would have been fine but the skimping in so many details made this feel so painfully generic and rushed.

I just wanted to know more leading up to the first action scene, i didn't get that, so why by the 2nd action scene do I feel like I'm just not ever going to get any fun world building moments or even a exposition to help get attached to what's going on? It all felt so mindlessly violent. Like the violence on its own might be able to distract from the lack of a detailed world, realized characters or a well thought out plot. I felt so brain dead getting through this book just sorta along for the ride to see what other action scene it wanted to try and pull off.

This was so unsatisfying and majorly needed to be longer at the start of the book, which is rare to say. Usually wanting a book to be longer is for when you're finishing up a book and wanted to know more of the plot after so much building. This just needed world building, character building, plot building, everything really before it got so action/conflict heavy.

The writing style was nice at least. It had vivid explanations of the many action scenes which made it easy to visualize what was going on. I could feel the professionalism with the writing style on being able to pull that off because it was so fluid and descriptive. That is probably the only good thing I have to say about this book though. It's overwhelmingly bad.

It's definietly not a Were romance. They seemed to steer so far into grotesque that it's almost comedy. The descriptions of extreme violence kind of overshadowed any actual story, which is too bad, because the underlying lore sounds very interesting. It's sort of like 30 Days of Night if you blow away all the nuance.

Would you enjoy reading it again:
Probably not. It was a mediocre audiobook (and if I had read a physical book then I probably would have stopped reading). The plot was interesting (basically a retired werewolf turns dogs into werewolves, and then an active werewolf and the town has to deal with this chaos of werewolf-dogs) and the characters were funny (but in a very adult way - where they insult each other and swear). There are cool descriptive scenes of the snow littered throughout but gets boring and annoying because the book reads as if it is a first draft (primarily due to repeating words/ phrases/ concepts). - 2

Did you enjoy the plot:
It was entertaining but it got boring/ repetitive/ predictable in the second half. *SPOILERS* The book starts off with the retired werewolf getting hunted by active werewolves (due to the company instructing them to do so). This entire concept was great. Then there was the reveal of werewolf-dogs, and we saw how those dogs are coping with this. I thought it was a very cool concept - but the second half of the book felt like there was no direction. It seems like the author had a great idea then was unsure where to take the plot. It felt repetitive and the second half of the book could have been a lot quicker paced. Overall, it was a good concept though but beyond the concept, the book didn't explore anything in a deeper nor more profound depth - 3

Did you enjoy the writing style:
Not really. The book would say one thing then repeat the same concept again a few sentences later. This book feels like it was poorly edited and they didn’t want to 'kill their darlings.' The pacing was off as well. -2

Good ending?
Very predictable and boring. There wasn't an actual ending because this is only book one of three. I feel this book was slow paced and should have been merged with the other two books (even though I have no read those) to make a better ending and a faster paced novel. I was going to give this a 3 star rating but decided to give it 2 stars because I do feel that a trilogy isn't a good excuse to have a book not end in a satisfying manner: it felt the last half of this book was encouraging me to buy the next two books rather than actually tell a compelling story- 2

Format: audiobook (1x)
Average rating: 2.25 stars. Round up: 3 stars.

Werewolves with a twist

I like a good supernatural genre story and this one fits the bill. The premise is a werewolf has gone rogue and the high uppers want him stopped so they send two werewolf enforcers to handle the rogue. To say that things go as planned is an understatement. Added to the mix of this tale is a winter storm of giant proportions. The story is actually a two parter. The first part deals with the rogue werewolf and the second part deals with his attempt to create havoc by using dogs. There is a human, who gets involved in this mess and has to trust the werewolf enforcers. The story was fast paced and you could get a feel for the characters. Although several of them get killed as the reader, you can feel for their demise. If you like a good werewolf story then try this one.

Under the snowy backdrop of a Newfoundland island, something unnatural is happening. A taste for flesh is being nurtured, all under the watchful eyes of the Warden, Borland. While Ross enters the wolves den, unprepared and innocent, Kirk tries to stay focused despite the force of nature that is his target.
If werewolves are your thing, then this is a must-read. The author sets the scene in a beautiful way, poetic and direct. His use of language is unique and bleakly beautiful, as is the concept of this story. Through a set of well-developed characters, Blackmore unwinds a story that leaves you hooked, shocked, and hopeful.
This is a brilliant addition to the paranormal/supernatural genre, and even more so to the sea of werewolf novels. I am thrilled that it is part of a series.

I was totally enthralled!

In a way, a tale of Werewolves, but unlike any other Werewolf tale I've ever read of or seen of on film before. This story was so different, so unique, It was fun and exciting to read.

A "renegade" Werewolf, who has become a danger to Humankind AND fellow Werewolves , must be taken down. He has already killed others of his kind, sent to bring him to ground, so this time, two are sent. But what they find when they finally reach their quarry stopped them in their tracks, and the lives of those two Werewolves, and the surrounding town of Human inhabitants will never be the same again.

For me, this was a riveting story that I had a hard time putting down, and now I'm wanting to know, are there any more???? I certainly hope so!

This makes me not trust Audible reviews. There were such good reviews for this book, and I LOVE supernatural stories. *sighs* I bought this book because the sample of Borland swearing was hilarious and I felt like it was a suspenseful start. Let me say again, I love werewolves, vampires, zombies, witches. I love some violence if it's done correctly. However, the plot of this book was incredibly thin, and the whole 8+ hours was going from one house/kill to another. The same overblown violence with no character building. I mean, what does it say that I liked the German Sheppard the best? I bought it, I finished it. There's no way in the world I'd go for part 2, even if it was free.

Great book. I love Blackmore's writing. There's not much I can say about this one that other people haven't said (beware of spoilers), but I wanted to write a review just because the author has such a great way with the way his stories unfold. I've read all of his Mountain Man series as well as The Bear that Fell from the Stars and I have never been anything but impressed by his ability to keep me reading late into the night.

I'll definitely be reading more of his novels and I'm looking forward to anything he writes in the future too.

Hopefully he'll write something else about werewolves...

If you are looking for something a bit different than the usual werewolf story this is the book for you. The characters are very good and described very well. I love the concept of the werewolf curse working backwards. The pages fly by once you get started on this book and it's near impossible to put down. I look forward to reading more from this author. I think it would be great if he wrote another werewolf story to accompany this one.
