Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates a gruesome murder that reveals a little-known chapter of early Amish history in this new installment of the bestselling series by Linda Castillo.

Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father.

Kate knows all too well that the Amish prefer to handle their problems without interference from the outside world, and no one will speak about the murdered man. From what she’s able to piece together, Swanz led a deeply troubled life and had recently been excommunicated. But if that’s the case, why are the Amish so reluctant to talk about him? Are they protecting the memory of one of their own? Or are they afraid of something they dare not share?

When her own brother is implicated in the case, Kate finds herself not only at odds with the Amish, the world of which she was once a part, but also the English community and her counterparts in law enforcement. The investigation takes a violent turn when Kate’s life is threatened by a mysterious stranger.

To uncover the truth about the death of Milan Swanz, Kate must dive deep into the Anabaptist culture, peering into all the dark corners of its history, only to uncover a secret legacy that shatters everything she thought she knew about the Amish themselves―and her own roots.

A dark and chilling winter scene immediately draws readers into the storyline in The Burning by Linda Castillo. This crime thriller and police procedural features Kate Burkholder, the chief of police in the small town of Painters Mill in Ohio. Set in the middle of Amish country, this sixteenth book in the series is somewhat darker than usual. Kate and Tomasetti have only been married for a couple of months, but doesn’t stop the midnight call to her from dispatch when a suspicious fire and scream are seen and heard in the woods. A charred body is found that had been wired to a stake. Since the Amish prefer to handle their problems without interference from the outside world, gathering information about the deceased is difficult. When Kate’s brother is implicated, she finds herself clashing with both the Amish community and her counterparts in law enforcement.

The characterization is excellent, making each person come to life for me. Readers of the series will be familiar with many of them. One thing that struck me as slightly odd was the number of nicknames for officers on Kate’s investigation team. She has learned to delegate, likes to finish what she starts, is focused, hates the politics and media side of the job, and is respected by her officers. She’s loyal, driven, intelligent, has good instincts, and is courageous. Kate comes alive and it’s easy to connect with her and want her to succeed in finding the killer.

This novel is graphic in places and the murder descriptions are brutal and hard to read at times. The descriptive narrative transported me to Kate and her team’s suspenseful investigation. The plot twists worked well and the ending was action-packed. Ms. Castillo is an excellent storyteller who kept me engaged with gripping scenes and a creative plot that built suspense. The story captivated me from beginning to end. The book did a great job bringing together historical events and current events within the storyline. Ms. Costillo is clearly a master at building tension and delivering exciting results that keep readers engaged. Themes include trust, transparency, conflict of interest, respect, secrets, murder, and complicated family and community relationships.

Overall, this book was briskly paced, suspenseful, and gripping. This novel should delight those readers that enjoy police procedurals, crime thrillers, and mysteries that have a strong female lead character. However, be aware that it is also unsettling at times. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

This is an Amish thriller mystery series. It is one of my favorite series. I have read every book in this series unloved every one of them. You don't need to read them in order but once you read one of them you most likely will want to read all of them. Her books are very dark.

The murder in this book was so gruesome and this book made my heart pound. It was such an intense read. The murder is a little graphic. It is a fast-paced read. It is action packed straight from the beginning to the very end. It is horrific and a nightmare.

Before you open up this book make sure you don't have any plans. Because all you will want to do is read this book. Lock your doors and turn off your phone.

I love all the characters in this series. They are all well done This book gave me a book hangover because I couldn't put it down and it kept me reading it into the morning hours.

I want to thank Netgalley, St Martin's Press for the copy of this book and exchange for an honest review.

Happy publication day!
4⭐
Genre ~ police procedural
Series ~ Kate Burkholder #16
Others in the series ~ #1-16 + .5's
Setting ~ Ohio
Publication date ~ July 9, 2024
Est Page Count ~ 320 (p+ 29 chapters +e)
Audio length ~ 9 hours 31 minutes
Narrator ~ Kathleen McInerney
POV ~ single 1st, present tense
Featuring ~ brutal murder, references to domestic abuse and assault

There has been another brutal murder in Painter’s Mill and Kate and her team are on the case. This time someone has been burned alive. Can’t get much more brutal than that. Was this a random attack on a snowy night? Or did Milan deserve it?

I wouldn’t expect anything but non stop action when Kate is involved and the action doesn’t let up. Kate seems to always get herself into dangerous situations and these were top tier in the danger department.

What I appreciate about Linda’s writing is that there isn’t any repetition. We get the information once and when it’s time to relay it to others she simply just tells us she filled them in or something to that effect. Way to save time and not bog us down.

Overall, another fabulous addition to the series.

Side note ~ I like the budding romance that seems to be developing within the team. I suppose since Kate and Tomassetti are finally married we need another couple to root for, and I’m all for these two.

I was lucky enough to have both the ebook and the audio. Both worked perfectly.
Narration notes:
She’s a bit robotic, but does a fine job. It's not the voice I picture in my head for Kate, but I’ve grown accustomed to it.

Series notes:
I think you should read them all in order because they’re great, but I suppose it’s not absolutely necessary. Each book follows a different murder, but Kate’s life is progressing.

It’s that time of year again!
What time you ask? The release of the latest book from Linda Castillo, of course! Yet another excellent addition to my favorite series!

In Book 16, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates the gruesome murder of an Amish man. He was found tied to a post and burned alive. Who would kill a God-fearing man in such a brutal way? What possible motive was there? Is there more to this murder than meets the eye?

If you can get through that jolting beginning you’re in for a treat!

Once again, Kate needs to channel her Amish upbringing to pry open the doors of the tight-knit community that does its best to keep the common people out.

I just adore Kate’s character. A driven, tough as nails police chief but also the newly married, loving wife of Tomasetti. They make an amazing team and I can’t wait to see them grow as a couple.

This is one series that has remained as strong as ever. And now the wait begin. Tik-tok, tik-tok…

Imagine an Amish man burned at the stake. It’s a chilling crime, and Kate, Tomasetti, and their team are on the case to crack this baffling mystery. From the very first page, the tension grips you, thanks to Linda’s masterful storytelling.

Let’s talk about Tomasetti for a moment. Picture a badass agent, always dressed in black, who has a seemingly tiny heart, especially when it comes to Kate. He’s definitely swoon-worthy, adding an extra layer of excitement to the story.

I’ve been hooked on this series since book one, and let me tell you, each book is a fresh adventure. Just our beloved characters facing new, unique challenges every time.

A big shoutout to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for letting me dive into this audiobook ARC. It was an absolute thrill to listen and review!

The Burning, the 16th in the Kate Burkholder series, starts with a grisly crime. A man has been burned alive, chained to a stake. This series is never light, but this story was even darker than usual. I also struggled more with it. The murder victim was not a good man. In fact, he had committed so many bad acts he almost felt like a cliche.
Usually, I really like Kate, but here, I was disappointed by her absolutely stupid decisions. Her physical altercations didn’t ring true and she didn’t seem to actually suffer from the damage inflicted. The reasoning behind the motives of the bad guy also made little sense to me. Although it was interesting to learn a little more about Amish history. As always, Kate’s interactions with the Amish ring true and are a highlight of the stories. While I found this to be one of the weaker entries in the series, I’ll definitely be looking forward to #17.
My thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.

You may be picturing a setting of trees or buildings on fire but you would be wrong!! This book gets off to a roaring start!! Terrorizing scenes that I will have trouble forgetting!!

Kate is awakened in the early a.m. and called to investigate a fire in the woods. Two of her deputies happened to be close to this site when they heard an anguished scream. What they discovered is a charred body chained to a stake and burned alive.

No one reported witnessing the scene. No one is reported missing.

It will take Kate a lot of sleuthing and digging into Amish history to try to solve the case of why Milan Swanz was killed in this way. I learned a lot about the Anabaptists and some of their early rituals and beliefs.

After interviewing many of her Amish neighbors she discovers that Milan has harmed many in different ways. As is usual for the Amish they are reluctant to discuss anything about one of their own. However Milan Swanz had been excommunicated recently and was no longer allowed near his wife or children.

When the police get involved they have lots of suspects including Kate’s brother. He had been seen arguing with Swanz recently. Kate knows that he would never kill another person but she will have to find facts to exonerate him. She also must find the killer!!

The novel really ramped up when Kate’s own life was threatened – and more than once. Her husband, Tomasetti, gets involved in the case. He wants to protect Kate who often goes off on her own which can put her in dangerous situations.

If you’ve read the series you’ll know that Kate gets herself into a lot of “physical alterations” with the bad guys. In this novel there are some truly frightening scenes that left me wondering how she would survive!

There are those who like to take retribution into their own hands. Revenge is a strong motivation in this novel!!

This was another great installation to the series. “The Burning” is action packed and I was turning the pages faster than ever!

I can highly recommend this novel to fans of this series - it doesn’t disappoint.

This was a great buddy read with Debra, De Ann and Mary Beth, be sure to read their great reviews.

I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher St. Martin's Press/Minotaur, through Edelweiss. It was my pleasure to read and review this title.

A shocking and brutal murder has occurred, and Chief of Police Kate Burkholder has been called in to investigate! The Burning is equal parts shocking, gripping and tension filled! I was sucked in from the very first page and attempted to do my very own super sleuthing to find whodunit.

Milan Swanz, a local Amish man was chained to a stake and burned alive in this shocking installment in the Kate Burkholder series. Investigating the case will be somewhat difficult as the Amish like to keep things to themselves and not speak ill of the dead. The investigation will lead her down many paths, one of which is the Anabaptist culture.

As I mentioned, I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. I had not heard of the Anabaptist culture prior to reading this book and found myself looking it up. I love learning new things while reading. Another thing that I loved is that Kate and Tomasetti are newlyweds. Woohoo!

When Kate's brother is implicated in the murder, things get even more interesting and tense! He is not the only one that comes under suspicion during the investigation. I had my suspects lined up and had several in mind during various points of the book.

I enjoyed the mounting sense of tension and danger which kicks into overdrive toward the end of the book! I enjoyed the suspense as it ramped up and Kate found herself in dangerous situations more than once, proving herself to be like wonder woman. Nothing stopped her!

Gripping, well written, tension filled and shocking!

*This was a wonderful buddy read with Dorie, DeAnn, and Mary Beth. Please read their fantastic reviews as well to see their thoughts on the book.

Kate Burkholder and her now husband, John Tomasetti feel almost like family after 16 books. Although, I’m happy I don’t live in Painters Mill, as the small town is full of victims and murderers.

As newlyweds, I was hoping to get a little more page time with them as a couple, but that is not the case in this one.

This story was a good wake up call for Kate. What is the balance between her job as a cop and that of a wife. What if they add children into the mix?

It’s the little things we sometimes don’t notice that add that extra layer of richness to our lives. As the years make their indelible mark, those small gifts become even more meaningful.

Kate dives deep into the Anabaptist culture in this one, is a dark history for the Amish (Mennonites and Hutterites as well).

The book left me with an interesting thought. Is vigilante justice ever acceptable?

This is an Amish Thriller/Police Mystery, and this is the 16th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read the first 15 books in this series before picking up this book, and I do feel that it would help if you read this series in order. This book took me on a wild ride that I loved so much. This book pulled me into the story and made me want to keep reading because I had to find out what was going on. The ending had my heart going and I was loving it so much. There were so many times I was sitting on the edge of my seat while reading this book. I loved this book so much, and the mystery in this book was so good, and it is fast paced with a ton of action. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

The sixteenth book in the Kate Burkholder series and I only just got around to reading it. I heard that number seventeen is coming out later this year and I do not want to get behind.

The Burning lives up to its title immediately when the story begins with a particularly gruesome murder. From then on it is edge of the seat madness right up to the closing pages. Kate finds out who her friends really are when she is removed from the investigation because her brother is a suspect. Of course she continues anyway, which is lucky because she is the best person to solve the case due to her understanding of the Amish culture.

A good story. very well told, full of suspense and a lot of action. I loved it a full five stars worth.

In this 16th book in the Kate Burkholder series, the Police Chief investigates the brutal murder of an Amish man who'd been excommunicated. The novel provides enough background information to be read as a standalone.

*****

Police Chief Kate Burkholder grew up in an Amish community in Painter's Mill, Ohio but left as a teenager.

After Kate became a law enforcement officer, Painter's Mill offered her a job and she returned to head the police department. Kate's Amish background is advantageous because she speaks Pennsylvania Dutch and is familiar with Amish culture.

Kate is now married to John Tomasetti, an agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). The couple's dual law enforcement careers are advantageous, because, when it's appropriate, Tomasetti can provide support for Kate's investigations.

Author Linda Castillo 'kills off' the victims in her books in the most gruesome fashions, and this story is no exception. As the story opens, Milan Swanz is drunk, and walking home from a bar in ankle deep snow.

When Milan is offered a ride in a passing car, he accepts with alacrity. Big mistake!! Before long, Milan is tied to a stake in the woods and burned alive.

Police Chief Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of the crime, which is soon crawling with law enforcement personnel. Kate looks at the blackened corpse with peeling skin and feels sick to her stomach. She thinks, "Milan Swanz was a troubled man who made plenty of mistakes in the thirty-six years he'd been on this earth. But he was a human being with a wife and children and parents who'd loved him despite his flaws."

Or maybe not so much! As Kate begins her investigation, she learns that Milan had been excommunicated from the church for repeated wrongdoing. Moreover, Milan and his wife Bertha were divorced (an unimaginable no-no in the Amish culture), and Bertha doesn't seem too shocked about Milan's death.

Bertha is reluctant to speak about her ex-husband because the Amish are extremely insular, and never air their dirty laundry to 'Englischers'. For that reason, Kate finds it hard to find out about Milan's transgressions. Nevertheless, Kate eventually learns that unfortunate things happened to people who angered Milan. For instance, after Milan was fired from his job in a cabinet shop, the shop 'accidently' burned to the ground; and the Diener (church officials) who excommunicated Milan.....

.....suffered personal injuries or damage to their crops.

Kate even learns that her own brother, an Amish farmer named Jacob, had a run-in with Milan....but Jacob refuses to discuss the matter with Kate.

As Kate pursues her inquiries, she hears about an old sect called the Schwertler Anabaptists, who 'dealt with' wrongdoers in Amish sects.

When Kate tries to determine if Schwertler Anabaptists are still active, she's warned off and told, "If you cross them, they will come for you. They will find you. They will devour you. The pieces of you will never be found." Fateful words, since Kate is repeatedly attacked by a stranger dressed in black.

There's more drama in the book when a BCI agent named Neil Chambers insists Kate recuse herself from the investigation because her brother Jacob is a possible suspect. You can't keep a good police chief down though, and Kate keeps looking into Milan's death. All this leads to an exciting and heart-stopping climax, which readers familiar with the series know to expect.

On a more personal note, newlyweds Kate and Tomasetti enjoy a romantic evening with a charcuterie board, wine, and a lit candle.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to readers who enjoy thrillers, especially Kate Burkholder fans.

Thanks to Netgalley, Linda Castillo, and Minotaur books for a copy of the manuscript.

The Burning by Linda Castillo
Kate Burkholder series #16. Cop procedural thriller, mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone but characters lives and situations flow in a continual fashion throughout the series.
Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call about a suspicious fire in the woods. An Amish man has been burned at the stake and Kate does the bulk of the investigation because of her ties to that community. When her brother becomes a suspect by other officials, they order Kate off the investigation. But too late, as the killers already have Kate in the sights and know she needs to be stopped before she finds too many answers. Kate is not one to give up. She’s going to protect and serve with her last breath if it comes to that. And it just might.

🎧 I alternated between an ebook and an audiobook copy of this story. The audiobook is performed by Kathleen McInerney. The performance is done well with distinct voices for the main characters. Since it’s Kate’s POV alone, the majority is her investigating and taking the reader along for the ride. At one point, Kate herself is attacked and held at gunpoint. That scene alone is why audiobooks are so popular. The reader is in the exact same position of frustration, and anger and fear of that gun going off.

This is an audiobook you will need to keep at 1.25 speed at the fastest. Anything higher, makes the voices sound digital and not alive. The narrator uses a lot of pauses and subtle variations in the performance that are lost at higher speeds. Especially during the autopsy analysis with doctor Coblentz and the department assistant, as well as passages of Kate describing scenes or giving background information. I tried several different speeds and feel the best performance is at 1.25.
For a veteran and lover of audiobooks, if you prefer a higher speed for playback, I suggest reading, rather than listening to this one.

Suspenseful, history filled and pulse-pounding.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Macmillan Audio.

Love this series, the setting, the characters. This murder that Kate will investigate is not only particular grisly, but one of the suspects hits close to home. Learned a bit about the Anabaptists, which I knew nothing about, though I have met many Amish and Mennonites. Although their beliefs are different, as a community they have many of the same problems we do. This series makes that clear. Also, sometimes justice does prevail.

One thing that bugged me is that Kate, who is a supposedly smart Chief of police, so often does things that don't make sense. Puts herself, needlessly imo, into dangerous situations that some patience and foresight could have prevented. Though is course, this is also what makes it a more thrilling story. Conundrum!

Kate Burkholder #16 is another barn burner of an installment. This series is consistently fast paced and suspenseful. I have read all of them but it's not necessary to read them in order to enjoy this series.
Once again Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of a horrific crime. A man has been burned at the stake and this time it will send her into the Anabaptist culture and the secrets they have been hiding for years.
This is a gripping thrill of a read and one I found hard to put down. Another great installment to the series.

Broken record here! Stumbling into an awesome series at Book 16 😫😭.

An Exiled Amish man is found burned at the stake, leaving behind a trail of his misdeeds; it's almost like every suspect in this mystery wanted him dead! Our MC Kate Burkholder has to sift through all their stories to sniff out who the killer is! And the sooner she does it the better; cos the walls are closing in on her brother as the culprit!

Solid 4.5 STARS!!!!

The Burning is book #16 in the Kate Burkholder series and it's still going strong!

I'm excited to return to Amish country in Painters Mill, Ohio. When I think of the Amish community, ghastly murders certainly do not come to mind. Here we are with a charred body tied to a stake and burned alive.

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called to the crime scene of Milan Swanz. Who would want this Amish man dead in such a gruesome way?

Kate begins to investigate before the case turns personal. As always, Kate found herself in imminent danger.

The Burning is a well-written police procedural mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Linda Castillo knows how to pace her story, and gives a good amount of backstory and history without getting bogged down. I love her style.

I've listened to all her books narrated by the talented Kathleen McInerney and highly recommend it.

Thank you Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the ALC.

Awesome story and a new series I need to read!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to say I was a little nervous when I got this book for review because it is book 16 in a series. I was really hoping that would not impact getting to know the characters, especially if it was going to be a continuation series.
Thankfully, this did read easily as a standalone. I love the lead officer as a female married to another agency investigator. They worked off each other perfectly, and I love their energy together. Note to self: Read the back books to get their love connection!!
This book is pretty wild with the horrific crime committed and the investigation into a very tight lipped community. The author goes into a lot of detail and makes it clear that they do not like to share information. This makes the investigation extremely difficult.
The author beautifully ties in old-world beliefs into the story which made it a tough one to put down. It was fast paced, interesting, and engaging. Plus I have to say the main character is one tough chick. Loads of action and a little raw at times.
This book delivers everything that we’re looking for in terms of cop fiction. Evil shows it’s face but the good wins again!
The Burning is a unique story with amazing detail, imagination, and twists that keep you on your toes. I will definitely be reading this author again.
* I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When Chief of Police, Kate Burkholder, was called to a suspicious fire in the middle of the night, she didn't expect to see the remains of a charred body, who appeared to be burned at the stake. Kate's investigation lead to ancient rituals of the Anabaptist culture, some 500 years old. With Kate's brother Jacob implicated in the murder of Milan Swanz, and her superiors wanting her off the case, Kate decided to continue to investigate on the quiet. Only her new husband, John Tomasetti, knew what she was doing. But danger was everywhere; none of the Amish would talk and Kate could feel evil nipping at her heels.
The Burning is another outstanding read in the Kate Burkholder series - #16 - by Linda Castillo and I raced through it in a matter of hours. Kate, as usual, is stoic, determined and doesn't stop until she gets the answers she needs. Her team are behind her all the way, keeping her apprised as the situation changes. Highly recommended.
I read all the Linda Costello’ books, and I loved them all. This book was very dark. I thought the murder that had to be solved was very gruesome and it seemed like there were a lot of very bad people in this book. All of the members of the police force were back in this book as they have been in her other books so it was nice to read about them all again. Kate and Tomasetti have gotten married and there’s another romance brewing within the department. Can’t wait for the next book.
This is the sixteenth book in the Kate Burkholder series and I have only read this one and one other - I'm so far behind! These are definitely good reads.
Description:
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates a gruesome murder that reveals a little-known chapter of early Amish history in this new installment of the bestselling series by Linda Castillo.
Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father.
Kate knows all too well that the Amish prefer to handle their problems without interference from the outside world, and no one will speak about the murdered man. From what she’s able to piece together, Swanz led a deeply troubled life and had recently been excommunicated. But if that’s the case, why are the Amish so reluctant to talk about him? Are they protecting the memory of one of their own? Or are they afraid of something they dare not share?
When her own brother is implicated in the case, Kate finds herself not only at odds with the Amish, the world of which she was once a part, but also the English community and her counterparts in law enforcement. The investigation takes a violent turn when Kate’s life is threatened by a mysterious stranger.
To uncover the truth about the death of Milan Swanz, Kate must dive deep into the Anabaptist culture, peering into all the dark corners of its history, only to uncover a secret legacy that shatters everything she thought she knew about the Amish themselves―and her own roots.
My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed Kate Burkholder's Amish background and the unique perspective it gives her in her investigation as the Chief of Police. This murder gets personal when a spotlight is cast on Kate's brother as a person of interest in the heinous murder. There are a lot of tense moments as Kate gets in some dangerous situations during her investigation. Learned a bit about the Anabaptists (totally new to me) and the Amish and Mennonites. I enjoyed the writing style and though Castillo did a great job with pacing and tension in the story. I will certainly be reading more in this series.
Kate finds herself on the outside, yet again, dealing with an Amish community that prefers to handle their problems themselves.
The who and why the murderers are killing in The Burning was intriguing.  And, the justification for the murders is thought-provoking, to say the least.  Kate ultimately finds herself questioning everything about who she used to be and who she is today.
My only quibble is when authors have their characters nearly killed by stabbing, shooting, or in this case being nearly strangled to death (twice) and bouncing back up like the Energizer Bunny and basically saying "I'm fine! I don't even need to get a night's sleep! I've got a killer to catch!"
I still love this series, however, and I hope it NEVER ends!!
I feel The Burning can be read as a standalone but I highly, highly recommend starting with the first book! I absolutely love this series!!
BIG thanks to both #MinotaurBooks and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of #TheBurning.  This book is #16 in the #KateBurkholder series and the expected publication date is July 9, 2024.
For those of us who enjoy reading book series, there’s always that one series that stands out from the rest! That one series that never disappoints and gets better with every installment. And that one series with characters you’ve come to love, whom you’ve seen grow and have become like family. Well, the Kate Burkholder series from Linda Castillo is that book series for me. There are few books I look forward to more!
THE BURNING is the 16th book in the series, one that transports us to Painters Mill, Ohio, baring witness to one of the most gruesome murders Chief of Police Kate has ever investigated. As always, the mystery draws the reader deep into the Amish community and their way of life, where secrecy and distrust of outsiders make Kate’s job of finding a killer all the more difficult. As Linda Castillo does exceptionally well in every novel, she presents the reader with a mystery that slowly begins to reveal itself, the story reaching a heart-pounding and edge-of-your-seat conclusion that never ever disappoints. Without any doubt, this continues to be a favorite series of mine, and has been for the last 15 years!
I want to extend a huge thank you to NetGalley, Linda Castillo, and St. Martin's Press | Minotaur Books for gifting me the ARC of THE BURNING! I so appreciate you trusting me with an honest review!! It was a privilege to be able to read the newest novel in my favorite book series before publication.
Kate's new case is horrific-- Milan has been burned alive. He's Amish, but has recently been excommunicated, and the more Kate learns about him, the more she understands that he was a pretty terrible person. (TW: domestic violence, sexual assault) Kate's brother has had a disagreement with the victim, but so have quite a few others since Milan had a terrible temper. When her brother is charged with murder, Kate knows that she has to continue investigating even though it is evident that the murderer will do everything in his power to stop her. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.
The gangs all back, Kate, Tomasetti and the Painters Mill PD crew, for this 16th installment of the Kate Burkholder series. While the series takes place in Painters Mill, OH and is in the midst of OH Amish country and the MC, Police Chief Kate Burkholder, is formerly Amish, this series is no cozy mystery series! The per capita crime rate in Painters Mill is extremely high and this series illustrates that the Amish community and its faithful are just as susceptible to criminal behavior and impulses (even more so in some installments) as the rest of the human race.
The story revolves around the death of a former Amish man, Milan, who was burned alive, bound to a stake. By all accounts, Milan was a worthless piece of crap and according to the Amish, he was an evil man. Unfortunately, Kate’s brother, Jacob, was seen having a heated argument with Milan a couple of days before Milan’s death. The BCI agent in charge, Chambers, is a total jerk, and definitely has an axe to grind with Kate and probably Tomasetti, now that they’re married and still working together. Chambers gets Kate kicked from the investigation because he considers her brother a viable suspect. Chambers declares Kate’s involvement as Chief of Police, is a conflict of interest. This doesn’t stop Kate – at all!
It’s well into the second half that, in typical Kate fashion, Kate proceeds to go around poking beehives with a stick and gets herself into quite a mess. Kate stumbles upon a fringe group of the Anabaptists (Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites) and the investigation takes a turn for the worse and the story becomes really dark and creepy as well as scary and dangerous for Kate and Tomasetti. The end comes pretty fast after that in a flurry of intense activity. The finale indicates that the danger may not be over and kind of feels like a lead-in to future installments – maybe?
I always love catching up with Kate and the gang and this was no exception. While the characterization of Kate, Tomasetti and Kate’s crew at the station are pretty well developed by now, I did enjoy seeing more of the relationship between Kate and her brother as well as the relationship between Kate and Rasmussen and Aggie. The pacing and storyline were steady and interesting, respectively. Castillo’s writing is as good as ever too. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.3 that I will be rounding down to a 4star rating. I flipped back and forth between the ebook and the audiobook and always enjoy Kathleen McInerney’s narration of the series. I want to thank NetGalley and St Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this 16th book in Linda Castillo's "Kate Burkholder" series!
One of my all-time favourite series!
Painters Mill Chief of Police Kate Burkholder receives an urgent, middle of the night call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. What she discovers is a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased is an Amish man who was chained to a stake and burned alive.
Kate, previously Amish, knows that the Amish community prefer to handle their problems within their own community. From what she is able to piece together the victim led an extremely troubled life and had recently been excommunicated. The suspect list rapidly begins to grow.
A captivating plot and suspenseful read!
It is always a pleasure to revisit the characters I have become quite attached to in Painters Mill.
I can hardly wait for the next Kate Burkholder story.
Kate Burkholder investigates the case of an excommunicated Amish man, Milan Swanz who was burned at the stake. The man had made many enemies with his wicked ways.
This was an entertaining story full of interesting characters that had me reading into the night.
Thanks NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this eARC that will be released July 9, 2024!
I have been a huge fan of the long running Kate Burkholder mystery series so I was dying to read this latest volume. Thankfully this latest book completely lived up to my expectations.
Technically readers could start here but they will get so much more out of the character interactions if they follow them back from the beginning. It is great to see how far they have come.
As for the mystery, I thought it was solid. I really liked how dark the setup was, which felt more reminiscent of the earlier books. Parts of the plot were guessable but that didn't take away from my enjoyment.
Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Kate is called to a grisly murder, a man burned at the stake. As Kate investigates, she finds a lot of potential suspects due to the victim's background. Unfortunately, one of the connections is personal to Kate and a BCI Agent makes waves about her being biased. Tomasetti is also brought into this complicated case.
The town of Painters Mill is a small one, so Kate is a very hands-on Chief of Police, investigating suspects and following up on leads right along with her officers. I really like Kate and her officers: Glock, Mona, Skid, and Pickles. They’re a good team, more than just work colleagues.
I was addicted from page one, but man Kate made several TSTL decisions that were completely frustrating! It’s hard to believe a seasoned police chief making such stupid and rash decisions, especially when she keeps getting her ass handed to her!
The Burning is book sixteen in the Kate Burkholder series, but could be read as a standalone in a pinch. Each book focuses on a case that’s solved by the end. There is the romance between Kate and Tomasetti that begins in book one. I read the first two books in the series and then skipped ahead to book fifteen and sixteen, but I’d like to go back and work my way through the rest of the books at some point.
I’ve listened to the series from the start and really enjoyed Kathleen McInerney’s performance! Her accents and performance of Deitsch accents are well done. I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed.
A copy was kindly provided by Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
