When a local business, Davis Diapers, offers to sponsor the Krushers, Kristy accepts. She figures the new uniforms will give her team a big boost. But instead of being psyched, the Krushers fall apart: Mr. Davis bosses them around, and their new uniforms say DIAPERS--in huge, red letters. And that's not Kristy's only problem. With Dawn in California for good, the BSC is way overbooked.
But the new girl on Kristy's block likes baseball and kids. Maybe she can help. . .
Ann Matthews Martin was born on August 12, 1955. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, with her parents and her younger sister, Jane. After graduating from Smith College, Ann became a teacher and then an editor of children's books. She's now a full-time writer.
Ann gets the ideas for her books from many different places. Some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings. Many are written about contemporary problems or events. All of Ann's characters, even the members of the Baby-sitters Club, are made up. But many of her characters are based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows, and other times she simply chooses names that she likes.
Ann has always enjoyed writing. Even before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother to write down for her. Some of her favorite authors at that time were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. They inspired her to become a writer herself.
Since ending the BSC series in 2000, Ann’s writing has concentrated on single novels, many of which are set in the 1960s.
After living in New York City for many years, Ann moved to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York where she now lives with her dog, Sadie, and her cats, Gussie, Willy and Woody. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and needlework. Her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children.
in this first introduction of a honest-to-goodness NEW BSC MEMBER since Hello, Mallory by ghostwriter Peter Lerangis, a new family is moving into a house in kristy’s neighborhood. kristy is excited to discover the family has twin 13-year-old girls but is less excited to discover that abby, one of them, has an actual funny sense of humor (which doesn’t mesh well with kristy’s boring waspy connecticut sensibilities -- they probably think the “what if the hokey pokey really IS what it’s all about” bumper sticker is funny). eventually, though, kristy grows to like abby and she becomes the bsc’s new alternate member (very convenient since dawn just left in Farewell, Dawn). meanwhile, kristy agrees to a sponsorship deal with davis diapers and the krushers are now called the diapers and have pictures of diapers on their uniforms. understandably the kids are upset cease to have any real team spirit, and it doesn’t help that mr. davis of davis diapers is a miserable jerk who keeps backseat coaching and yelling at the kids as his form of motivational speaking. with abby’s help, kristy gives up the cushy new gear she got from the sponsorship deal and the krushers become the krushers again. meanwhile meanwhile, mrs. porter/morbidda destiny’s granddaughter comes to live with her because her parents are going through an ugly divorce. she’s having a rough time until she starts a band called druscilla and the dynamos. SERIOUSLY THAT IS THE COOLEST BAND NAME OF ALL TIME. ROCK N ROLL.
highlights: -since mary anne cries a lot, logan keeps talking about bringing a raincoat to sad movies. I know 13-year-olds don’t get that this sounds like a condom reference, but I’m just thinking of that wonderful draw something meme with the gay batman and robin, where the prompt was raincoat and batman is wearing a condom while robin is lying in bed, patiently waiting. note: I tried SO HARD to track down this draw something meme and have been completely unable to find it. if you know what I’m talking about and know where to find it, please send it my way. thank you. -when it's taking a long time for the new people to move in, kristy gets mad at them: "who did they think they were, making me run over to their house in vain all the time." god, kristy is so...kristy. I love her so much. -abby is the best. the krushers are totally demoralized because kristy made a bad decision without consulting them, so abby acts like a goofball which builds up their team spirit (since they’re finally having fun again). then abby basically tells mr. davis (the sponsor) that he is a jerk and that the reason the krushers lost is because he was being mean to them all day. abby is like kristy but with backbone and less self-absorbed. -if you read the bsc books in the mid 90s, you remember their huge contest to name the twins. they didn’t specify that the twins were going to be jewish (which is good because at that point I was going to orthodox jewish school and would’ve wanted them to be named rochel and rivka bergstein or something), so the names that I wrote to submit were cathy and sandy smith. I know this because I never sent them in and they’re still sitting in my copy of Kristy and Mr. Mom from 20+ years ago. -apparently the working names for abby and anna (while they were waiting for the contest results) were lucy and ethel ricardo (which we find out in the letter from ann in this book). classic ann m. martin to make an i love lucy reference of everything. -I just generally love abby and anna and how they are so different from these goyische connecticut kids with all their delightful jewiness (I am a jew so I can say words like goyische jewiness).
lowlights/nitpicks: -abby makes a my fair lady reference and kristy doesn't get it. really? her friends are always making her watch old movies at slumber parties. -the team's name is now the diapers and their new uniforms have pictures of diapers on them. why didn't kristy verify some info before agreeing to this? it’s frustrating, but it also feels out-of-character from kristy, who over-prepares for everything.
the first outfits we see abby and anna wearing: abby: baggy plaid shorts and a U4Me t-shirt anna: long khaki pants, sandals, and a short-sleeve button-down shirt
another abby outfit (accidentally mismatched): "Abby entered the kitchen wearing a striped shirt and a paisley skirt."
mr. davis outfit: -"I turned to face a heavyset, balding man wearing Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt that said Davis Diapers."
another summer is ending, & another school year beginning. to wrap up softball season, kristy's krushers are playing a five-game world series against bart's bashers. despite being distracted & not giving it their all in practice, the krushers manage to scrape a one-run win in the first game. a man named mr. davis happens to be walking by & notices that the krushers played an exciting game, culminating in victory, & that a lot of young families had come out to cheer them on. he happens to be the proprietor of a local business called davis diapers & he asks kristy if she would be interested in sponsorship. he would provide the team with professional-looking uniforms & new equipment, & in exchange, he would have a chance to advertise his diaper business to the families that come to the games. kristy talks it over with her parents & the babysitters club & no one can see a downside, so she agrees.
but when the uniforms arrive, kristy is disappointed. they all say "diapers" on them & feature mr. davis's logo on the back. david michael gets an eyeful & he is horrified. he thinks it will be too embarrassing to wear a uniform shirt that says "diapers" all over it. many of the other kids feel the same way. a few good sports, like myriah perkins & matt braddock, sportingly wear the uniforms, but the other kids are really opposed.
only twelve of the twenty players wear their uniforms to the next game, & they play like shit. the bashers trounce them, & make fun of the uniforms. mr. davis is there to see how the team does & he is disappointed with the way the krushers play. he keeps giving the kids coaching tips, but he has a really discouraging, gruff way of communicating that only beats the kids down even more. after the game, he tells kristy in no uncertain terms that he expects all the kids to be in full uniform for the next game.
meanwhile, babysitting B-plot: a little girl in karen's class, druscilla, has recently become a child of divorce. her mom is granted custody & wants to move away to mercer. while she's looking for a job & an apartment, she leaves duscilla with her grandmother, who happens to be mrs. porter, kristy's next door neighbor (also known as morbidda destiny). it's obvious to mrs. porter that druscilla is struggling with the divorce. she asks watson & elizabeth for advice & hires the babysitters club to look after druscilla a few times. when shannon sits for dru, she manages to connect with her, & dry confesses that she thinks the divorce might have been her fault because sometimes her dad got mad at her for misbehaving. she thinks that if she'd listened to him better, her parents wouldn't have split up. shannon handles the situation well & takes dru around the neighborhood to play with other kids.
also, another plotline features the stevensons moving into the house on the other side of mrs. porter. mrs. stevenson is a widow with two teenage daughters, abby & anna. kristy wonders if she could become friends with them. she likes anna right away, even though they don't have much in common. anna is pretty quiet & likes classical music. she is hoping to get a spot playing violin in the stoneybrook middle school orchestra. abby is loud & talks a lot. she also shows off a lot in terms of her athletic ability. kristy thinks abby dominates conversation, doesn't know when to shut up, & hogs the limelight. we can understand why kristy would not like this. she finds out that abby is coaching some of the krushers players behind kristy's back, including david michael. kristy spies on a coaching session & is critical because abby acts too goofy with the kids & cracks a lot of jokes when kristy thinks she should be focusing on teaching them the fundamentals.
at the next krushers game, even fewer kids are wearing their diapers uniforms. mr. davis is not pleased. kristy is not pleased by the way the kids are playing. they are beaten even worse than they were in the second game. she thinks that their spirit has been extinguished. she also notices that some of abby's goofy, gimmicky coaching tips have a positive effect on the kids & that they play better after they adopt her instructions.
after the game, kristy & abby give the kids a little pep talk, but mr. davis interrupts & is all, "you played like losers out there! i didn't sign up to sponsor losers! get it together!" after the kids slump away, totally defeated & beaten down, abby is all, "screw you, mr. davis! these kids were doing great before you came along! you can't talk to them that way!" he's all, "when you have a team to coach or sponsor, you can do it however you want, but in the meantime, i'm doing things my way." kristy kind of waffles for a while, afraid of offending the sponsor, before she grows a backbone & is all, "abby's right. we don't need you or your uniforms or your new equipment. you can have it all back. leave my team alone!" then she invites abby to be her assistant coach.
dru's storyline is wrapped up in that she decides to form a band with some other neighborhood kids, to play at krushers games. *yawn*
the babysitters club needs a new member to replace dawn, so kristy invites abby & anna to join. abby accepts, but anna says no because she wants her afternoons free to practice violin. & that's how abby joins the babysitters club. there's a weird scene where the babysitters are contemplating adding abby & anna to the club, & stacey is like, "what about abby's asthma? if she had an attack while she was babysitting, that could be really dangerous." kristy says, "if you had a diabetic reaction while you were sitting, it could be dangerous, but we let you in the club." stacey is all, "that's different. i carry honey packets in case of emergency," & kristy says, "abby has her inhaler. whatever." kind of weird that stacey would be the one feeling reluctant to admit abby over her medical issues.
ps--because this is a krushers book, & a kristy book, it pretty much automatically gets one star. i gave it an extra star solely for the scene in which abby tells off mr. davis. it was awesome.
My entire readthrough I've been eagerly awaiting this book: Abby's here! She's one of my favourite characters, and though Kristy paints her in a semi-obnoxious light, she's still tons of fun. And I actually enjoyed the "sporty" main story, though it wasn't really about the baseball, per se. All in all, this was a solid BSC book, and I'm excited to keep reading because I haven't read this half of the series nearly as much as the first, so it still feels fresh!
The book that brought Abby into the series. I had stopped reading BSC books before she joined but I do remember seeing a name the new BSC member contest and a part of me wanted to start reading the books again. But I didn't and only met Abby when I discovered the super mysteries. After some adjustment I grew to like Abby. She's a more tolerable version of Kristy. After the Krushers win their first world series game against the Bashers the owner of Davis Diapers approaches Kristy about sponsoring the team. He sends uniforms that change their name to the Diapers and the team rebels and refuses to wear the uniforms and Mr. Davis is a jerk. Abby and her twin Anna move in two doors down from Kristy after Kristy keeps spying on the empty house for weeks. Kristy doesn't like Abby at first but after she sees Abby at practice she grows to like her. Anyway the team plays lousy, loses games Mr. Davis is awful Abby tells him off and the Krushers go back to normal with Abby as an assistant coach. The b plot involves Mrs. Porter's granddaughter Drucilla who's parents are getting divorced and she tries playing ball on the Krushers and eventually Anna helps her play flute and she starts a band that plays at the games. The book ends with Abby and Anna being asked to join the club. Abby accepts but Anna says she has too much else to do and declines. Not a bad entry I do like Abby and find her arrival refreshing as the usual girls are getting stale, but we'll see if things improve.
The plot was fun and interesting at the same time, but I was put off by two things. 1. I don’t think Stoneybrook got the 90’s memo about not talking to strangers (especially strange company owners) because everyone seemed totally okay with a random adult talking to children. 2. Mr. Davis at the baseball game (It was just like reading Cedar River Daydreams: Silent Tears No More. I really liked how Abby called him out.)

As a kid my best friends sister had the whole BSC series on a book shelf in her room. I thought she was so grown up. And I envied this bookshelf. And would often poke my head into that room just to look at it. And when I read BSC, I felt like such a grown up. And while I might have still been a little too young to understand some of the issues dealt with in these books, I do appreciated that Ann M. Martin tackled age appropriate issues, some being deeper than others, but still important.
Kristy is in the midst of preparing the Krushers for a 5-game series against that Bashers when a local business owner asks to sponsor her team. At first, it seems like a wonderful opportunity, but Mr. Davis chooses a terrible uniform (Davis's Diapers) and is mean to the kids. Kristy finally stands up to him, but only with the help of Abby Stevenson...Kristy's new neighbor (who has a twin: Anna Stevenson).
(LL) This feels like it was only written to further the overall storyline and welcome Abby into the BSC before her book, which is the next one in the series. There were some solid lessons in the book, but none of them really all the different from previous books. Abby seems cool, and a much better character than Dawn, so I’m ready to see how Abby does in the club.
This storyline is painful (but in a good way?) I like the way the introduction of Abby as a character unfolds--you get to see her being a little annoying, but you also get to see Kristy being annoying and overly annoyed with her, which is very on-brand. Looking forward to revisiting some of the Abby books because I barely remember them.
When I was 10 I joined a readers club/group where we got a new book every week. I chose The babysitters club. The books are fantastic! So enjoyable. I loved getting the book every week. They are super quick reads and I was able to read it in one day. Highly recommend for young teenagers to read or even younger if they are able too read well.
Also lol a very accurate depiction of a-hole sponsors who think that them giving you money means they own you. Go Abby for standing up to him and pumping up Kristy, and go Kristy for making the right choice at the end.
I also sympathize with Kristy being 13 and not yet knowing enough/ being experienced enough to stand up to Davis Diapers' bullying from the start.
My favorite part was when Abby stood up for Kristy. I also think Anna should have been more important, and Abby more clearly a friend rather than that annoying.

Fantastic books for young girls getting into reading!! Great stories about friendship and life lessons. The characters deal with all sorts of situations and often find responsible solutions to problems.
I loved this series growing up and wanted to start my own babysitting business with friends. Great lessons in entrepreneurship for tweens.
The books may be dated with out references to modern technology but the story stands and lessons are still relevant.
Awesome books that girls will love! And the series grows with them! Terrific Author!
Wasn't a fan of this book back in the day, still not a fan of it now. It was honestly pretty boring, and it was hard to get through a kid. The most interesting part is of course our first introduction to Abby Stevenson and her family, which leads to her being brought into the BSC. I didn't mind Abby, and I did like her portrait collection book a lot. Anyway the best part of this by FAR is when she tells off Mr. Davis being a total jackass, and gives Kristy the courage to tell him to take his uniforms and shove it. +1 for Abby!
Why did Kristy always get so fired up over things that didn't make much difference? I suppose this is why I wasn't terribly sympathetic when book 100 came around. If you're going to freak out over free uniforms, you need to do some soul searching to see why you're so upset.
In which...something about the Krushers and K. Ron getting them uniforms or some junk. Also, Abby is the New Dawn, only not a hippie. I hate you, Abby. STFU. This is one of my least favorite BSC books.
