Nothing is as it seemed in calm, quaint Legley Bay.
Famous novelist Constance Mansfield lived a seemingly straightforward – if private – and somewhat predictable life. Friends, beloved daughter Sutton, a beautiful home, and all the success an author could wish for. A perfect life….but was it?
When a hit and run accident suddenly takes her mother’s life, Sutton finds hidden secrets with her heartbreak. Emotional walls she assumed Constance had built to protect her privacy may have been to protect something – or someone – else entirely. Family and friends return home for support, including her own lost-love, Declan. He’s the first thing she craves to help her cope with her loss and the questions she’s left with, but he’s also the last person she wants to see. Will he be able to put down roots at last?
Can the loss of true love be the making of a life, or is it destined to be the undoing of everything? When money, power and love combine across time, anything is possible.
Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
Tea and Primroses by Tess Thompson is a 2014 Bookthrope publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Sutton returns from a trip looking forward to seeing her mother because she needed to talk to her about her engagement to Roger. But, instead she is informed her mother has been in an accident and died. Foul play is suspected. Sutton is so blindsided by the sudden death she can't think about Roger. Not only that , her old lover Declan has come home for the funeral. With the idea her mother's death could have been a murder Sutton is unable to think of a single soul that would want to hurt her mother. When she began going through her mother's things she finds a story/journal/letter her mother wrote for her. Declan reads it to her and so begins the story of Contance's life. Connie always wanted more than to live in a small town being married to the owner of the hardware store and raising babies. Her mother, a bitter woman without the ability to feel warmth toward her husband or daughter never supported Connie's dreams. But, Connie chose college, journalism and with the help of a special mentor, she became a very successful writer. But, the light of Connie's eye was her daughter, Sutton.
The story switches back and forth from the story of Connie's life to the present day. Sutton and Declan must come to terms with their feelings for one another after a six year separation and this letter/story from Connie is helping the two of the them open up about the past. The story of Connie's life, her first love, her marriage, her best friend, who was Delcan's mother and the unimaginable losses she suffered is just heartbreaking. I am on the edge of tears as I write this review. While we are initially brought into the story by a murder, the novel takes a turn into another direction after the first few chapters. Without even realizing it , I was totally absorbed in the story Connie has begun to tell her daughter and the man that was like a son to her. I forgot all about the murder investigation. I forgot about this book being a mystery. This is an incredible and emotional story. True love, honor, sacrifice, tragedy and the renewal of relationships that should have been in place years ago all combined to make this one unforgettable love story. But, for those hard core mystery lovers, never fear.. the author doesn't forget about you and trust me, you will get one big huge shock as the pieces begin to fall into place. Certain thoughts might have crossed your mind as Connie's story unfolds, but trust me, you will never see this coming. I read many mysteries and crime novels and frankly, it's hard to pull one over on me, but I fell straight into the author's trap. This makes me want to read anything and everything by this author. I can't say enough nice things about this book. A+ or 5 stars.
This is my favorite Tess Thompson book. Without a doubt. Two love stories, from two different times, coming together to complete the circle back to where it was meant to be. It evokes such bittersweet emotion. It is about love and loss and survival and secrets. It explores that complex topic of mother/daughter relationships. Even with all that, it is heartwarming. And, Tess Thompson relates the intricate plot flawlessly and beautifully. You always know where you are in the different times in the two love stories. There is no jumping around because it flows seamlessly. The characters were my favorite type of people to read about. They were complex and flawed, but goodhearted, charismatic and devoted to those they love. You just can't help but fall in love with Constance and Patrick. Oh and there is a murder mystery here too. It is the kind of book that stays with you after you finish it. My favorite kind. Once you pick it up, you don't want to put it down. I will definitely be reading it again. I really loved it.
After reading Riversong, Riverstar, etc. I pre-ordered this one and an so pleased I did!! Love, love, loved it!!! Can't wait to read more from Tess Thompson.
Wow! Tea and primroses, the second book of Legley Bay series, is the most bittersweet love story I have read in years and the greatest one! I enjoyed every minute spent in this book. It was a torture to put it down when I had to because this time I only had time for reading during my breaks at work, so I suggest you choose better time! Absolutely loved it! Amazing story line where past and present are intertwined so beautifully and so emotional. Book in a book literally revealing secrets never known for being there, mystery with twists and turns but just in a different way no less intriguing even if you know who is behind it all. Characters are realistic as always living with real life struggles, issuses, problems and relationships.
Tess's books about love and friendship lift my spirits emotionally and this time was no different. I adored the book-within-a-book theme. Clearly, Tess has drawn heavily on her own experiences as a writer and put a lot of herself into her latest novel.
When I saw the "Tea and Primroses" email from Amazon at 9:11pm last night, I knew I would be in for a long night. Allowing for several obligatory tea breaks, it was 4:04 am this morning by the time I had finished reading the book.
I woke up late this morning, still enjoying the feel-good factor I get from reading a great book. The conclusion I came to is that 99c is not nearly enough.
This is one of those books that you pick up and think, I guess I'll at least try it. Next thing you know you are so deep into the story that you even forget to stop and eat, and believe me, I love to eat. LOL I would definitely recommend this book to my friends.
I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
Tea and Primroses is a very emotional story about loss, second chances, and new beginnings. It is beautifully written, but at times, I found it to be a little too emotional. And although the mystery at the heart of the story was not much of a mystery, it was still a very good read.
When Sutton Mansfield looses her mother, she is completely lost. Luckily for her, her mother made arrangements for her childhood friend (and the love of her life) to come back to her and help her through this. Together, they discover her mother's secret love story in the form of a manuscript she left and find that even after six years apart, they are still in love with each other.
Both love stories are very well done. The story of how Sutton and Declan get to know each other again after their time apart is interspersed with extracts from Constance's manuscript, which serves as a warning to the two not to make the same mistakes, to let go of certain things, and to fight for what is important. The manuscript also introduces several other tragedies, namely the deaths of both Constance's parents and her best friend (who is Declan's mother) which are all connected.
The few things that bothered me (though just a bit) where: Sutton's character - she comes across as a very weak person who runs every time she has to make a difficult decision. Although she does grow up quite a bit, this only happens in the very last chapters. I would've liked to spend more time on her feelings and reactions to the things she learns about her family through the manuscript, instead of just watching her change into a completely different person at the very last minute. The deaths - there where quite a few deaths we learn about in the manuscript. I find it somewhat unrealistic that no one has ever connected all those deaths and realized that there have been five fatal accidents all in one small town, and all involving one family.
Overall, I enjoyed this story very much, though I wouldn't recommend it if all you're looking for is a quick, fun read, as this story is very intense, sucks you in and stays with you for a while.
Constance Mansfield, reclusive bestselling author, is killed suddenly, struck by a car while riding her bike from her home into the little Oregon town of Legley Bay. This is shock enough for her daughter Sutton, and their little circle of friends as close as family, but it's not the worst.
The worst is that it appears to have been no accident. Constance was run down intentionally, deliberate murder.
With this startling opening, the book proceeds to ex;lore relationships among Sutton's generation, most critically her relationship with Declan Treadwell, son of her mother's friend and housekeeper Roma, who also died in a car accident some years earlier, and Constance's own unsuspected past.
Among the things Constance has left behind for her daughter is a manuscript, not another novel, but the story of her year in Vermont, never mentioned, unsuspected by anyone except her own closest and oldest friends. Does this manuscript hold the answer to her death?
Thompson does a wonderful job of exploring the complicated emotions and relationships, and interleaving the two stories, Constance's thirty years ago, and Sutton's now. She draws the reader in, revealing the characters' strengths and weaknesses, and the dark, unsuspected secrets of Constance's life. One of the impressive features is that characters are allowed to be imperfect. The local police chief is the ex-husband of one of Constance's best friends. He was a lousy husband, but he's a good cop and a loyal friend. There are other such details throughout the story, and it adds a depth and reality that's often lacking in fiction.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Recommended.
I received a free electronic galley of this book from the publisher.
A beautiful story concept is the highlight of this book, the second in the series. While the first was more an ensemble piece, this second book focuses on Sutton, newly returned from Paris and suddenly discovering that her mother has died.
Sutton is trying to pick up the pieces of what was a fairly well-planned return, instead she discovers secrets of love and heartache, both from Sutton’s perspective and from inserts into the past from her mother’s perspective.
While not as overloaded with information better shown than told, or as overtly directed as Caramel and Magnolias I still found gaps in the emotional impact that we were expected to find versus what was actually there. What I have come to find is that authors who are also playwrights often have such a decided and solid view of what the reader NEEDS to see at any given moment, that rather than set the stage and allow the emotion and setting to develop for the reader, the playwright needs to give all of that information in large chunks, resulting in information overload and removing the reader’s input into the story. While the dialogue had moments of brilliance, the overload of information and direction as to what I should think or feel at any given moment left me uninspired, and without any great questions. So much effort expended in telling even the minutest of details made this a slow read, and the overload of information stifled any emotional response that I would have had were some details left for me to ferret out for myself. Other readers may (and do) love this style choice; it just isn’t to my taste.
I received an eBook copy of the title from Tasty Book Tours for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Just a fair warning, before opening the front cover, keep the tissues handy. Tea and Primroses is both beautiful and heart wrenchingly emotional. Thompson has hit the nail on the head with this book. From page one, my heart went out to Sutton. She's strong and passionate, but not really aware of those qualities in herself. Grief smacks her in the face, making her needy, but not in the miserable, whiny-girl sort of way. Instead, it breaks her down, allowing her to discover her own inner strengths. I don't think I have read a book in awhile that featured a hero quite as dreamy as Declan. Most girls have a weakness for the bad boy, but I loved that that wasn't Delcan. He's sweet, charming, artistic, and so in love with Sutton that it scares him. Watching their relationship blossom and grow from missed puppy love to an unbreakable bond kept me flipping page after page.
Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. However, all opinions expressed are my own.
Tea and Primroses starts off with an emotional punch almost immediately. The story delves into relationships, secrets, and hidden truths when Sutton learns of her mother's death. But, it's so much more than that. There are too many secrets hidden and things to learn. Sutton's struggles with the loss of her mother and then the things she learns takes the reader on an engaging, emotional journey that took me in the most unexpected places.
At times, there were so many characters at once, I was a little lost, but they really bring so much to the story. Everyone has things they want to learn, or are holding back and I wanted to learn some of their motives.
This story kept me turning the pages. The writing is beautiful, filled with emotions and at times, haunted me (In a good way) This is a wonderful novel that I enjoyed. I've never read a book by this author before, but I'll surely be on the look out for others. If you're looking for a novel that has it all: Mystery, emotion, romance, and relationships that focus on love and truth, then Tea and Primroses is just right!
Disclaimer: I work with BookTrope Publishing, publisher of Tea and Primroses
I have been a fan of Tess Thompson long before I became affiliated with BookTrope, and I think her books just keep getting better and better. From the River Valley Series to now the Legley Bay series, I look forward to Tess's books and eagerly read what she offers to her fans. Tea and Primroses features a timeline that has recently become a favorite of mine - switching between past and present. Not only do we get Sutton's POV and what her life is like after losing her mom, but we get to read more in depth about her mom's life and her great love- and loss. The bittersweet stories that are woven together create a beautiful novel, one that I was telling my friends about while still reading the book. If you haven't read anything from this author yet I highly suggest you do. I look forward to much more from Tess Thompson.
I was lucky enough to win this book via the publisher, though I've never read anything of Tess's prior to this book. I realized there was a previous novel set with some of these characters after I rushed to Amazon to see if there was anything else by this author, but this was definitely stand alone. I don't feel I missed out on anything by not having read the first book. This is a dual love story--a tale of mother and daughter's romatnic relationships and friendships. It was poignant and heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. I could not put it down! I knew (or at least hoped I knew) what was going to happen, yet it didn't take anything away from the story. Constance (mother) and Patrick's love story is woven seamlessly into Sutton (daughter) and Declan's story. Definitely a must read for any romance or chick lit readers out there.
Tess Thompson does what even the best selling authors cannot seem to figure out. She writes sequels to books without the annoying rehashing of past book details, as if all readers had not read the previous story.....she allows the sequel to stand on it's own merit. This book was a sequel to Caramel and Magnolias, and a lot of characters came back without the droning on of backgrounds of each from the prior. BRAVO, MS THOMPSON. This is a lovely murder mystery -slash- love story that I could not put down, and I would recommend her Legley Bay series to anybody. I am off now to check out her River (bend, song, star) series, and I am pretty sure it will be as fantastic as the Legley Bay series.
I have to say this is probably my fave so far :) I love how the multiple stories in this intertwine and the love and mysteries involved. If you've enjoyed her other books, you must definitely pick this one up too!!!
TEA AND PRIMROSES is the second book in the Legley Bay series. Each will stand on its own, but I strongly recommend reading both of stories that have been released thus far. I have enjoyed them.
A romantic suspense that spans a lifetime, Sutton’s lifetime, it is written in the present and in the last manuscript of her mother. I loved the way that they story switches from Sutton and Declan’s present to Constance and Peter’s past. I loved the emphasis that life is a circle and loss will be recovered. I was completely engrossed in this story of second chances, family, friendships, relationships, loves, losses, tragedies, and emotions.
This is more than a murder mystery. It is a life lesson, a reminder of true love’s joys and sacrifices. It is second-chance romances and “it’s never too late to live your dreams.” It’s every good wish we have for each other and should have for ourselves. This is why when Tess Thompson has another book available; I will want to read it.
Narration: S.L. Crawley is an extremely talented narrator. I love listening to her. She does pronounce a few words differently than I, but that could be regional (e.g. stifle and Adirondack).
Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via getfreeaudiobooks.com, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: TEA AND PRIMROSES Series: Legley Bay #2 Category /Genre: Romantic Suspense Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Listenability: NSFW Received from: Tess Thompson (as an Audible gifted copy)
Tess Thompson is at it again with Tea and Primroses, as it's the second book in the Legley Bay series, but can be read as a standalone in my opinion, but I do encourage everyone to read Book 1 first anyway. This mystery surrounds Sutton, who returns from a trip to talk to her mother about her engagement, who she learns has died in an accident, but murder is suspected. She's so upset by all of this that she can't even think about her engagement to her boyfriend Roger, and it only gets more complicated when an ex, Declan, shows up to the funeral. As Sutton has to go through her mother's things, she finds a journal of her mother's which she & Declan start to read, and they start to learn the story of Constance's life, which isn't anything Sutton would have guessed at. Now this story goes back & forth between past & present, so I'm reeling from all of it. There's twists, angst for days, and of course, still a murder mystery to solve. In the midst of it all, is the old feelings that Declan & Sutton are rekindling, so there's that. But most of all, just when I thought the story would zig, hell no, it would zag, so I never saw things to pan out like they did at all. Anyway, if you want to know how it all pans out, you'll have to one click this exciting piece of goodness that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is like a book within a book because of a lost manuscript found is a secret drawer. It is full of secrets, intrigue, and murder. "Constance Mansfield had a perfect life: a successful writing career, a beloved daughter, a beautiful home, loving friends, and perhaps most importantly, her privacy. But after Constance is killed, her grieving daughter Sutton begins to unravel her mother's secrets amidst the grief of unexpected loss. And it seems that Constance's privacy was not for her protection, but for something - or someone - else entirely.
As Sutton struggles to answer the questions about her mother's emotional walls, she finds herself craving the comfort of her past. A past that includes Declan Treadwell. But for all the relief Declan could bring, he's the last person Sutton wants to see. Forced to face both the pain of lost love and the mystery of her mother's complicated life, can Sutton emerge stronger than before? Or will life's tragedies be her undoing?" synopsis copied
I just loved this intriguing story from one of my go to authors. This time she weaves a tale that is so entwined with the past and deeds done. Her stories aren't a-z, not the mode of black and white. This one has secrets. Secrets and illusions which destroyed hearts, crushed futures and took lives. It's the past and the present and all the in-betweens. It's the deeds of the past and the impact on the present. They have a chance to not repeat the past. They have the chance right now to make a change. When all of the past is revealed, all of the secrets and lies, they have their turn to move past it and take their future and make it one. I love the way this author does things. Her books and their message is loud and clear and emotional. Her characters call out to you in their pain and their healing and just twist you up. Absolutely heartbreaking and yet restorative. Loved both of these standalone books in this series so far and their characters.
I've taken a while to read this book but boy, what a good book it was. Quite different in tone to the books Ms Thompson is writing at the moment. Sutton and Declan grew up together and seemed destined for each other until things went off rail. The death of Sutton's mother brings them back together in Legley Bay and secrets from the past are revealed and situations solved and problems resolved. This was a feel good book to read and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.
My heart stood still waiting to see what happened next. So emotional!!! The writing is superb!!!!!! I felt the pain of Constance and Patrick. What a love story they had. To have a love like that is amazing. Tess Thompson is an extraordinary author. She pulls you in and doesn't let go
This story is unique because it’s a novel in a novel. It begins tragically with the death of a beloved character. Throughout the story she comes to life in a very unique way. I feel like I’ve just completed 2 novels. I have never been disappointed by one of Tess Thompson’s novels and this is no exception.
Having read Books 1 & 2 in the Legley Bay Series, I want more! In Tea and Primroses, the story within the story concept created a magical and concise story arc. If you have not yet read Tess Thompson, you are missing out on wonderful stories of family and love.
