I've been able to read two of these books, but can't wait to read them all. What a fabulous offer from some awesome writers. And you get the best deal by purchasing them all at once, at pennies a piece! Why pass this up. I loved the two books I read already and look forward to finding some new authors to add to my favorites list. The Gifts, A Jacody Ives Mystery: I picked this book up immediately after Sacred Secrets, the prequel to this one. It starts out with a horrific murder and Rob, Carl and Gavin hunting a serial killer they have been after for years. This time, he has hit close to home in more than one way. Gavin goes one way, searching for clues in a tiny town, while Rob and Carl go another way, searching in their own way. They all end up in danger, of course. The people Gavin meets in Glade Springs are all so interesting and all seem to have deep secrets. It makes for a great who-done-it as any one of them have things to hide and you never know who is going to come after Gavin and his new love, Sarah and her adorable little girl Nikki. This is another one of Prather's psychic thriller mysteries and I loved it. Some of it was a little sappy (and I know a lot of people don't like that kind of thing in their thrillers) but it fit in with the storyline really well. I would love to read more of Gavin and Sarah's story, if Ms. Prather has more plans for them (hint, hint!). Guaranteed Justice, Justice Series: Lorne is back in book number 5 in the Justice series. She is still a tough cookie, maybe a little bit softer around the edges as she runs her new business of finding homes for unwanted pets. She soon realizes that this new endeavor with her husband is not going to give her the excitement she is used to and begins a second career, with her husband and family's help, of becoming a private investigator. Her first job finds her, and she is on the case of a serial rapist who seems to be very good at getting away with his crimes. But Lorne is all about justice! I love Lorne's character, her husband Tony, her family, and all of her old friends. There is also the return of Carol Lang, the psychic, which was a rich addition to this particular storyline. This did not have as much blood and guts as I am used to seeing in Comley's Justice series, but it was a fast read and the Justice books never disappoint.
Definitely great value for 12 full books, and the majority were quite good hence the 4 stars (with only a few average ones which you'll see below!). I want to make the review quick, so I'll only do a paragraph on each to give you a taster of what you're in for if you grab a copy.
Book 1: This one was a Jack Reacher tie in by a friend of Lee Childs. I've never read a Reacher novel so I was a bit disorientated for the first couple of chapters, but the writing was so good, and the main investigating pair so engaging that I got into the flow quickly. It was a great read, fast-paced, with the author leaving just enough info dangling to keep you going. However, I did find the way the officials and different US enforcing departments would get in each other's way for small reasons, infuriating.
Book 2: This is set in Texas and about a man killed in the forest and a detective trying to figure out why and how. Exceptionally well-written, had me with my brows furrowed, brain trying crazily to work out the clues at the same time as the characters - who were so well rounded and spectacularly characterised.
Book 3: The novel was a suspense about a woman fallen on hard times who moves in with her friends who live next to one of her favourite old movie stars. During the course of the novel she suspects foul play in her neighbour's house. God this book was so very, very slow. Too slow. I just felt like I was treading water the whole time. By the end I wanted to throw my Kobo out the window.
Book 4: This story was about an ex-cop who becomes a private eye and runs a dog kennel. It is also far, far too slow for a novel in the crime genre, more a drama really. A very slow drama. The reason I found it to be so was because the author describes a lot of everyday life in great detail that adds NOTHING to the story. And the author is not the best person at writing dialogue, most was quite awkward. In saying that, I found the ending to be very unexpected and it makes up for some of the more lack luster points of the book.
Book 5: Really enjoyed this one, it was about kidnapped girls being sold to families who wanted children. The main character was one of the strongest female leads I've seen for a while. Which did result in my only problem with the novel, a scene where a rogue cop who is investigating along with this female PI, chains her naked to the rail of her shower and proceeds to illegally go through her stuff without her fighting back or giving him any consequences for that highly horrifying bit of misogynistic bullshit. I don't give a shit if he's 'ultimately a good guy who is stressed', that shit is unacceptable. Firstly, there needs to be retribution, secondly it was so out of character for this PI to do nothing. It didn't mesh at all and made me angry for the rest of what was really, quite a good crime novel.
Book 6: Is about a DA who gets intimidated by a killer in a trial (the guy fixes the trial with his copious amounts of money). Spoiler - it ends badly for the guy. It is a very good novel, my only bug bare was that nowhere in the novel do they tell you about the DA's childhood demons even though she is CONSTANTLY referencing them. Drove me a little nuts, I need motivations people! Motivations.
Book 7: I just could not finish this book. The main character is an arrogant, misogynistic, asshat. And super creepy towards women in a rape culture way, always hitting on them, thinking he is being 'witty' but really he's just being creepy and unwanted. It seems to be written as the author's fantasy?? Where the women flirt back to this horrid behaviour which is incredibly unlikely.
Book 8: About an Angel who wants to upgrade from Reaper but falls in love with a subject he is told to help die. Turns out he has accidentally joined the dark legion. The book is fine, a good distraction, but I did find chunks of it quick predictable and derivative.
Book 9: Originally I bought this boxset because I was curious to read Joanna Penn's fiction work and this seemed one of the cheapest ways to do that. The book was definitely well written, researched, and did a great bit of social educating (for me at least). However, I will warn you this is one of the darker ones in this boxset, the subject matter (antisemitism) really got under my skin. Why are people so horrible to each other for such meaningless things? The story was about her main character from her Arkane novels returning Jewish artifacts to a synagogue in Budapest and getting caught in an alt-right wing political/riot situation. Good writing, strong characters, but as I said, subject matter made me so uncomfortable. A good thing??
Book 10: About a girl who moves from Texas to LA to be a singer. She can touch people and see horrible pasts and make it better for them. She finds spirits in her house and the main gist of things is these spirit/ghosts are trying to save her from evil. I like the premise, and the lighthearted mystery, plus the chicklit aspect. However... it was poorly written, it really needed a good edit. A lot of preempting of events rather than just diving in, sometimes breaking out of POV narration to talk to the reader in conversation which jerks you right out of the flow. Hopefully the author has found a good editor because the novel/series has promise.
Book 11: Yet to be read - so many books in the to read pile.
Deadly Dozen. Box set Various authors Book1 Don't Know Jack Diane Capri 1st book in the set is Kim Otto (FBI) on the chase for Jack none Reacher. Follow her and partner Gasper in their quest to find Reacher, along the way they run into some very unsavoury characters. Well worthy of a read.
Book 2 Cry Wolf J Carson Black Cry Wolf is a fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Laura Cardinal is a police officer and she and her partner are on the case of a murder that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. A very enjoyable read.
Book 3 Night Widow Carol Davis Luce You will find this book gripping, it has so many twists and turns you have to pay attention to what is going on. The ending is awesome, you'll love it.
Book 4 Guarantee Justice Mel Comley. This book starts with a bang and from then on you will find it very difficult to put it down. Lorne has again left the police force and after marrying Tony 6 months ago decides she wants to open an animal sanctuary. She then helps Tony to come to terms with his disability of losing a leg at the hands of the Taliban when on a MI6 mission in Afghanistan. She now thinks it's time for new challenges and is setting up a PI business for her and Tony, leaving the animal sanctuary in the capable hands of her dad. In placing a German shepherd with 3 girls, she discovers that 2 of them had been raped by the same guy allegedly, this becomes Lorne and Tonys first case. Follow how this case pans out and the ending is brilliant.
Book 5. Stranger in Town Cheryl Bradshaw. This book will have your insides in turmoil, it grasps you from the start. It follows the PI Sloane in her case of finding 2 girls that have been kidnapped. This is the first Cheryl Bradshaw novel I have read and it won't be the last.
Book 6. Breaking Steele Aaron Patterson & Ellie Ann Follow the trials tribulations of Sarah Steele ( ADA) in her quest to putting the baddies in jail. This book stars at a fair pace and continues all the way to the end. Well worthy of a read .
Book 7 Moonlight Sonata Vincent Zandri Richard Moonlight is a private detective and he is looking for the missing author Roger Walls. When a nice looking young female student tells Moonlight that she knows Walls he then keeps tabs on her whilst falling head over heels in love with her. Roger Walls as well as being an acclaimed author is also an alcoholic. You will enjoy the journey of this cast of characters and their exploits.
Book 8. Terminus Joshua Graham Terminus is a book that will change the way you think and act. In between agendas that clash Nickolia who is supernatural decides to come down and be normal again. He falls in love with Hope Matheson who has this habit of leading everyone astray.
Book 9 One Day in Budapest J F Penn A theft of an old relic from a historical city, brings about a state of violence that mirrors the violence of the 2nd world war. When a priest gets murdered and the relic is stolen, there are calls for retribution and violence flares up throughout the city of Budapest.
Book 10. Dead Celeb Michele Scott Evie Preston is a girl from a small town who moves to Hollywood and becomes involved in a murder. She finds work as a singer in a bar where she meets all sorts of characters. She has a job during the day as a make up girl to the stars, this job includes looking after the stars home ,which is haunted by dead celebrity's .
Book 11 Final Vector Allan Leverone When Nick Jensons wife is murdered he just works all the more. He works as an airport controller at Boston airport,he discovers 3 terrorists at his work and having killed 2 guards they now have access to the control tower.
Book 12. The Gifts Linda S Prather This is another one of Linda's thrillers and it is a very good one at that. Follow Gavin and Sarah his girlfriend who has a daughter called Nikki. They are now looking for the guy that committed a murder, and as it would turn out this guy has been on the run for a long time.
This collection The Deadly Dozen: 12 Mysteries/Thrillers entertained me for weeks. The set includes ten full-length novels and two long novellas. Some of the stories were so grabbing, that I put off watching TV and other forms of entertainment to find out what happened next. This set is a great value for those who like mysteries and thrillers.
As with any set, some of the stories are better written than others. There is a enough of a mix in themes and genres to prevent getting tired of reading similar works. For me, this was the first time I read most of the authors, and I will definitely seek out more books by several of the authors.
Below is the list of books in the set with my rating. See the individual book for my review.
1 – DON’T KNOW JACK (The Hunt For Reacher Series) – Diane Capri Rating: 4 Stars 2 – CRY WOLF (A Laura Cardinal Novella) – J Carson Black Rating: 4 Stars 3 – NIGHT WIDOW (The Night Series) – Carol Davis Luce Rating: 5 Stars 4 – GUARANTEED JUSTICE (The Justice Series) – M A Comley Rating: 3 Stars 5 – STRANGER IN TOWN – Cheryl Bradshaw Rating: 4 Stars 6 – BREAKING STEELE (A Sarah Steele Thriller) – Aaron Patterson & Ellie Ann Rating: 4 Stars 7 – MOONLIGHT SONATA (A Dick Moonlight Thriller) – Vincent Zandri Rating: 2 Stars 8 – TERMINUS - Joshua Graham Rating: 4 Stars 9 - ONE DAY IN BUDAPEST – J F Penn Rating: 4 Stars 10 - DEAD CELEB (The Dead Celeb Series) – Michele Scott Rating: 5 Stars 11 – FINAL VECTOR – Allan Leverone Rating: 3 Stars 12 – THE GIFTS (A Jacody Ives Mystery) – Linda S Prather Rating: 5 Stars
Who is Jack Reacher? FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is in charge of a covert mission to get information on him, but there is very little to go on. She will be working with Agent Carlos Gaspar from the Miami office. He's a very savvy investigator. Their first stop is Margrave Georgia. When they arrive, death and treachery are there to meet them. There are so many secrets and everyone involved seems to have a hidden agenda. Chief Roscoe of the Margrave PD is hiding something. What does she know of Jack? Where does the murder of her sergeant figure in? This is a fast paced, action filled suspense novel. The characters are well written and are portrayed with strength and courage. Diane Capri does an excellent job combining the multiple story lines into a taunt and suspenseful novel. The book is well written and the plot twists just kept coming. I never guessed who the mastermind was. That's how well written the story is. I have not read Diane Capri before but I plan to correct that mistake immediately.
I read Don't Know Jack as part of the Deadly Dozen anthology. I'm looking forward to reading more of the other stories.
This is not normally my genre, but I was looking for a change of pace and decided to take a chance on this collection. Unfortunately, there is no summary available for any of the books in the package which caused me to start reading a book that I had absolutely no idea of what to expect. As it was, if the first chapters didn't grab my attention or interest I moved on to the next story in the collection. Some reviewers offered rave reviews to certain books and admit they had clumsy or slow starts...unfortunately, these were books that didn't grab me from the start and I never finished them. I did find four of the stories enjoyable: Don't know Jack, Guaranteed Justice, Cry Wolf and Terminus, which all deserve 4 and 5 star ratings. If this is your genre and you enjoy reading about PI cases, searching for missing people and following an angel through the afterlife - then you can't go wrong in getting this collection. The price of the entire collection is a pittance to what you might spend to purchase them individually. Thank you Ms. Capri for the opportunity to read through this collection.
John Podlaski, author Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel
This set was a steal -- I forget how much I paid, but it was something ridiculous, like less than $5. I figured 12 books would tide me over for a good long while. The quality proven to be uneven. The first one was very well written, sharp and clever, and I was happy, thinking I'd scored an excellent deal. The second was not as good, though still acceptable, and the third was lame, setting the tone for the remaining works.
I'm sure it takes some smarts to construct a decent mystery with all the requisite twists, turns, and red herrings. But from the third book onward, I found myself mentally editing the writing to improve the awkward, superficial prose, which is something I HATE doing. Sloppy grammar, simplistic, juvenile description: "showing, rather than telling," as one friend puts it. I guess the rule for these inexpensive collections is the first one is best, suffer through the rest. I'd label most of these as the sort of thing you'd read while stuck for hours in an airport, nothing more.
The book is good read for the mystery lover. It introduced me to a lot of new authors and revisited some known before. In order to condense the space, the reviews of each of the twelve authors and their book will be under the book name and author. 1 - DON'T KNOW JACK (The Hunt For Reacher Series) - Diane Capri 2 - CRY WOLF (A Laura Cardinal Novella) - J Carson Black 3 - NIGHT WIDOW (The Night Series) - Carol Davis Luce 4 - GUARANTEED JUSTICE (The Justice Series) - M A Comley 5 - STRANGER IN TOWN - Cheryl Bradshaw 6 - BREAKING STEELE (A Sarah Steele Thriller) - Aaron Patterson & Ellie Ann 7 - MOONLIGHT SONATA (A Dick Moonlight Thriller) - Vincent Zandri 8 - TERMINUS - Joshua Graham 9 - ONE DAY IN BUDAPEST - J F Penn 10 - DEAD CELEB (The Dead Celeb Series) - Michele Scott 11 - FINAL VECTOR - Allan Leverone 12 - THE GIFTS (A Jacody Ives Mystery) - Linda S Prather Enjoy!!
The Deadly Dozen, an excellent selection of novels by 12 amazing writers at an incredible price!!!
I highly recommend the purchase of this compilation, introducing gifted writers, all with the ability to draw you in and keep you enthralled until the very last page! I had previously read much of the writing of Joshua Graham and loved all his work so was excited when I read about the release of the Deadly Dozen. An obsessive reader, always looking for new and exciting authors to add to my to read lists (yes, literally lists) I loved becoming acquainted with the works of the authors and their contribution and can say with confidence that they are all masters in their craft. Every novel had me interested and excited to read more of the individual's work. I sincerely recommend this as a great addition to your collection and believe you will not be disappointed. I only caution you to beware of the addiction you may develop to ALL of the individual authors!!!
A bundle of books that will keep any reader enthralled and reading to the end. From other worldly stories, to years old mysteries, to whodunits these twelve books should meet any reader's interests. The bundle made me scramble to find what other books these authors had written and even what they had in the works. Anyone who is looking for a mystery or thriller to read and also authors you may not have read yet, here is the opportunity. A great addition to any library.
Quality depends on tale - 12 in set. Most are interesting, whether there's vulgarity, sex, or gore depends - if you like a writers, worth the price. Prob something for everyone. TTS-enabled eBook does not have "links" (indicating each book) otherwise a nice weekend read. Preferred books: 1,2, and 11.
I enjoyed the stories very much. They were entertaining and held my attention throughout. A couple had some gratuitous sex that did very little to enhance the story but over all were excellent. I recommend the collection as a good read.
Deadly Dozen is a very good book. I am enjoying it very much. Carol Davis Luce in the Night Window was very good. M. A. Comley in Guarateed Justice was also very good. Don't know Jack was also good by Diane Capri. I have not read these authors before and they are all very good.
Wow, 12 novels that were all page turnovers. Twists and turns galore. Not a bad read among them. Buying a collection of books for a low price is a great way to find new authors.
