Kali Parks is a shadow in the war between two factions that are fighting to gain control of Chicago. Born and raised on the streets, she stands as a silent sentinel at her brother s side as he battles to gain control. She will do whatever it takes to bring peace to those she has pledged her life to protect, including fighting against the creatures that came to their world almost six years before." Fan-Favorit!
S.E. Smith is an internationally acclaimed, New York Times and USA TODAY Bestselling author of science fiction, romance, fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary works for adults, young adults, and children. She enjoys writing a wide variety of genres that pull her readers into worlds that take them away.
I liked the heroine (surprisingly) and the hero too. All of the books in this series have the supposedly awesome warriors getting themselves stuck in ridiculous situations where they have to be rescued, usually multiple times, by the heroine. Yawn.
But why the poor rating?
Drumroll please...

It had OW drama! I mean WTF?! I hate this in general, but in PNR it is inexcusable. I knew it was coming, it ate at my stomach until the end and then - wham - it hits. All it did was make me mad at the hero and unhappy with the book without enough time to recover before the ending. If not for that stupid, stupid plot device that served no purpose but to add unnecessary conflict and heartache, I would have rated this higher.
I love this series! I was hoping for Dagger's story after reading Hunter. I can see why this was needed first. Razor is yummy and Alpha and a big teddy bear for his lady!
Kali is a warrior in her own right, love her attitude. She is surviving and protecting those around her. Her sass matches her courage. There are a few moments when she is rash, especially when hooking up with her alien.
Razor is every bit the warrior his race is known to be. I loved the conflicts he faces and how he struggles to make the best decision. When he finds his soulmate he has even more to worry over.
The plot is great and really moves the overall series along nicely. I loved everything on Earth and can not wait to see what happens in the aftermath. I really hope we get her brother's HEA. The last quarter of the book is centered on the search for Dagger and then life on Razor's home planet. Plenty of drama all around. All these hunky supporting cast warriors!! I am so eager for their stories as well!!
The smexy time is plenty hawt. It does start out kind of abruptly, wasn't expecting it at that point, though there would be more getting to know you. There are several steamy scenes throughout and enough detail to raise your temperature and have you begging for ice cream to cool things off!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by David Brenin, who is yummy all on his own! Seriously, I could listen to the man read a cookbook,I bet that would be so hot! LOL This is a great read for his gruff voice, he makes smexy aliens even more delicious! Hold on to your knickers at the steamy scenes! His energy throughout the read is fantastic, a real compliment to the writing.
I am not sure I can wait for Dagger's book in audio. I want to because I love David's narration, but I really want to know what happens next. That ebook is calling my name!! Let's see how long I can hold out...I was never great with patience.

*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! So, I generally like S.E. Smith books and I really wanted to like this one. They provide the mindless enjoyment that is a contrast to my job, which requires a lot of thinking very often. I have listened to several audiobooks and have waited for a beautiful black (or at least non white passing) character/ heroine. But I was sincerely fine without one. After all, everyone doesn’t have to be represented in every story. If in this woman’s sci fi world, aliens only interact with white women and their families, so be it. Her book, her rules. But the sassy, black, older, heavyset nurse was just entirely too much and too cliche for me to even stomach the rest of the book. Once again, as per usual, the black female is the side kick, the lesser attractive, the helper of the white female in the white woman’s fantasy. As a reader, it’s frustrating when the people who look like you are never in a position of equality but are only written in to play mother, maid, or assistant to white women. I don’t support this in my space or my entertainment. In this novel, aliens are represented as more sexual beings than black women. Let that sink in for a minute.
I had to send the book back. And it was free. I read fantasy novels for pleasure and to escape reality, not experience the same things I deal with in day to day life. Next time, please either represent us well, or leave us completely out. And unlike aliens, there are actually black women in the world that can help you with your representation of us, if true representation is what you seek. And don’t just do it for us. Do it to expand your readership. Unless you think your current fan base couldn’t handle it. I think they can.

Here we have Razor, a really bad-ass alpha!!! His ruthlessness is legenday, but when he falls for Kali it was almost hilarious how fast he did that! LOL
I appreciated that Kali was the one to save his life and to be strong enough to defend her ideas!
A little less her attachment to her brother. Don't get me wrong, I liked her love for her brother, but it was a little bit to much to want to protect him as if he was a 5 years old! I wanter to tell her to stop treating him like she was his mother!
Another thing that I didn't appreciate is the way the males give females to other males to mate/wed... a little bit too medieval for me... and I liked that Kali didn't appreciated it too !!!
I have this series on audible, and this is a re-listen 😃 it is still 5 stars, it is well written, full of action and adventure, the characters are so lovable, and the narrator does such a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life
Kali Parks rescues Razor when he crashes into some trees. Razor is the older brother of Hunter from bk1. Razor claims Kali as his Ameta wife.
Kali is head of her brother Dustin's security. Her brother is in a rivalry with there old friend to claim and control Chicago.
I liked Razor and Kali they have a sinuous adventurous romance. With Kali helping Razor to help Dagger whom we though was dead escape the fighting rings.
In this, the second installment in the "The Alliance" series, Razor, kick ass stone cold alpha alien commander, is literally blown away the first time he meets Kali. And it got better and better after that. Kali, a rebel fighter, doesn't make it easy for Razor either as she has home field advantage advantage - Earth - to evade Razor getting his hands on her. On top of that is a non-stop action adventure storyline that kept me on the edge of my seat. I totally love stories that include more than the boy meets girl .. yadda yadda yadda .. and they live happily ever after. The end.
As for the adult content/erotica. The action is steamy as Razor shows the strong silent type can be sensual, romantic, and assure total satisfaction for Kali in all ways. Just not to the extent that I needed to think about taking a cold shower or have any quality one on one time with BOB. Bummer, as Razor is so spine chilling, dangerous, and dynamic ....
Cast of secondary characters. The secondary characters certainly added depth to this read. It's a smart author who realizes that to provide well rounded world building in a story requires more than just the development of the main characters. It's also smart to include characters from past installments. Jess, Hunter, Dagger, Saber, Taylor, Jordan, and 'others' gave me that feeling that I was returning home to see how things were going since my last visit.
My issues. There is definite improvement in the 'feel' of this installment from the previous one. The personalities of the characters for the situation they're in made sense. Good or bad. Everyone handles life problems and stress differently but consistently. Obviously I had problems here but the nonspoiler code of conduct prevents me from talking about where/how this was problematic in this book. The other issue is that there was a lot of action adventure in this book. That can't be bad right? Unfortunately there was so much that the later scenes were rushed and too compact to enjoy. As there is NO SINGLE SCENE I would have wanted left out, the only solution I could suggest is that this book should have been longer so these scenes would have been able to play out as those from the earlier portions of the story. Even if I had to pay more to have seen that happen.
Overall. I'm a fan of this author and she's on my auto buy list for whenever a new release is out so suggesting anyone to read this book is a definite yes. It CAN be read as a standalone though there are references and info that would have me suggest you read the first installment. The problem with that is that I wasn't much of a fan of it, so, if you do read it, you might get turned off. Guess it's up to each reader to decide and leave it at that.
Razor's Traitorous Heart is book two in The Alliance series. In this installment we are introduced to and follow the story of Razor, a brutal Trivator Alliance councilmen, and Kali, the sister and head of security for her brother, the leader of one of the rebel Earth factions in Chicago. On route to one of the final areas of conflict in Chicago, Razor's transport vehicle is shot down. Kali being in the immediate area jumps right on in to see if there are any survivors not realizing one is an alien until she is already there. She makes the decision to rescue Razor anyway and off we go.
This second installment in the series and once again it does not have some of the world building or back-story this reader is hungry for including answers about what the Alliance really is and what prompts them to determine that Earth needs to be brought under the control of the Alliance. However the story is well written and there is a little more action to get the readers blood pumping that is wonderfully written and great fun.
The story focuses on the primary characters' romance with some new twists and turns revealing treachery, greed, as well as brutality and heartache. The ending events of book one do become intertwined with this telling so the reader is not left hanging with unresolved questions and this flows well into the telling of this tale with the ending very satisfying.
While there is a little more meat to this tale than was served up with book one, Hunter's Claim, once again it is more romance with a scifi bent and the story's primary focus is on the interaction between the two primary characters, their budding relationship, and struggles. The story continues to meet the needs of readers hunger for sensual story driven smexy, which is also well done.
Overall I enjoyed Razor's Traitorous Heart and continue to look forward future installments and reading the peripheral character's stories. I also have hope that eventually my questions regarding the Alliance and Earth as we have been introduced to it will be answered. I would recommend this book to romance fans that enjoy a bit of a scifi twist to the tale and some sensual smexy going on. I received this book with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
Yai Razor! Another sweet alpha male from Susan. I couldn't put the book down waiting to see what other troubles might find Kali. There were more details about the Alliance and what they were trying to do and how they were trying to help the humans. The story left me wanting to know more about the brothers and their Amate. I hardly wait to hear about Dagger, Saber and Trigg. Nice reference to the Kassis lords. I love when characters and references to other series are found when I read. It gives me a great feel and a larger picture to Susan's imagination.
Do you know what’s better than a huge, handsome, hotter than blazes alpha male from an alien world? How about if said alpha is an over-the-top hero who is turning all sweet and totally devoted to one tiny but fierce human woman. They say the bigger they are, the harder they fall and the fierce warrior, Razor fell hard and fast for Kali, a strong warrior in her own right.
…In Three, Two, One…suspend your existence in reality and prepare to race at warp speed along a journey filled with danger, deceit, turmoil and death, where two people find a quiet oasis of love in each other’s arms. Razor’s Traitorous Heart by S. E. Smith showcases this author’s ability to write and write well! From soft romantic scenes to steamy and passionate moments, a hero that fumbles through the learning process of tenderness and caring, and a heroine who denies she wants or needs to be loved, S. E. Smith had me devouring every word, every page.
Factions on Earth are fighting to gain control of Chicago, and the Alliance is trying to settle the turf wars, but are they helping the wrong side? Meanwhile, warriors have gone missing and are discovered alive and in trouble on another planet, will Kali’s determination and battle savvy prove to be the key to rescuing them, including “her” Razor? There is so much to digest, so many subplots and so much action that page by page flies by without missing a beat. But for me, the romance sticks out with its fresh sweetness and that simmering pot-about-to- boil-over feel. S. E. Smith has created a world full f strife and characters that are both memorable and alive.
Bless you, S. E. Smith for creating two strong characters who can butt heads and hearts, but learn to accept each other the way they are as their love grows throughout this fabulous addition to The Alliance Series.
This series is proving to be one step apart from others with heroes with heart and loyalty and heroines with backbones and the wisdom to eventually realize when their future is standing in front of them.
I received a review copy from the author as part of S.E. Smith's Razor's Traitorous Heart Tour and Giveaway in exchange for my honest review.
Series: The Alliance - Book 2 Publication Date: June 11, 2014 Publisher: S. E. Smith ISBN-13: 9781500156725 Print Length: 258 pages Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
In the second book of the Alliance series Razor's Traitorous Heart we get Hunter's oldest brother Razor's story. Razor is a serious warrior with an intimidating reputation for quelling uprisings and smoothing the path when native insurgents make the transition to a peaceful pact with the Alliance difficult. The city of Chicago hold the last of the hold outs in the large city and Razor is sent to either accept a surrender or destroy the city and all of it's inhabitants. Kali and her brother Destin are fighting to keep a rival group of holdouts from taking over and destroying what is left of their home. Kali, like Jesse in book 1, is in a position to save a Travitor warrior in need and risks her life to save Razor after the helicopter that he is traveling in is shot down.
Razor's Traitorous Heart is another fun installment of the Alliance series and now more than ever I am looking forward to seeing who will be next in line to get their own book. Will it be the spitfire Taylor and the disgruntled and damaged Saber, or will we finally get Jordan and Dagger's book? Oh, the possibilities. One of the things that I appreciate about this series is that Smith is able to deliver a complete and satisfying book centered around one couple while pulling the threads of the secondary characters further out to tempt the reader into the next book in the series. Well done Smith! I will definitely be looking out for book 3!
**I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.**
I am IN LOVE with this series. Here we are now children --- now it's getting good. S.E. Smith just upped the hell out of her game. GAME ON.
The world, the world, the world. Oh how did I love it. Exactly the type of SciFi I love - described well, built up appropriately, just immersive and explosive to the reader. You KNOW these characters, you live them. This is longer and much more tightly edited. I was not a fan of the flashback's (and have not been in this series) but I have to admit that they work. Reading this (and the other stories) is like doing interval work. Start and stop, Go hard and catch your breath then start again. I don't care much for MF regular old vanilla sex and even those scenes were hot to me. That hasn't happened in forever. The way the other stories she has written help you craft a view of a universe (probably several) gives you a familiarity with what is going on that enriches the readers experience.
LOVED Razor and Kali - and the story of Chicago.
Really loving this series.
(Same review for all books. I read them back to back - though each has its own hallmarks and this ONE RIGHT HERE is probably my favorite. I truly have enjoyed the hell out of this reading experience!)
****My rant begins: I really like science-fiction and I always wish there was a more realistic representation of gays. Will this time we have a gay guy who is absolutely horrible. He’s just a bad guy without any moral compass what so ever. If the brother is gay then let’s see it, feel it, and embrace it. Rant over! **** Overall this is as fun as the first book. It has more focus. We get a tiny bit more world building but we still need to assume a lot. Yes, it’s a book to be read when you’re looking for fun over thought provoking.
I loved this book. It was just as good as the first one. Loved Razor and Kali, they were perfect for each other! I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for the next book! This is a definite recommended read!
Don't be fooled. There's no strong female character here.
I enjoy alien stories. I dig the sci-fi; I love how creative and strange an author can get with a new culture; and I really love watching how cultures colliding can play out when humans get thrown into the mix. I even enjoy when a romance comes into it; the confusion and miscommunication as the two different species sort themselves out can be a lot of fun. What drives me nuts about this particular sub-genre is how it mostly ends up boiling down to exploitative abduction/noncon fantasies with weak partners (usually women) and no character ANYWHERE who can adequately manage to explain across the cultural gap to these aliens why overriding a human's will can be so upsetting/damaging to that human. I can handle abduction and noncon if in the end, there’s some type of understanding between the 2 MCs about what cultural lines were crossed, and an expectation that it won’t happen again. What I hate is when everyone just ends up shrugging and saying "well, since you REALLY LOVE her, it's fine." It's not fine.
Even so, I can still sometimes manage to look past that lack of understanding if the characters and writing are worth it. I managed that in the first book of this series. I liked it fine, the narration of the audiobook was excellent, and the characters weren't perfect, but I got along with them well enough. This second book - not so much. The 2 star rating is because I listened to the audiobook, and it has a 4 star narrator. The book itself got a 1 star.
First off, the plot is an exact carbon copy of book 1. Heroine out on the streets spies alien in danger and is compelled to help. Alien is now obsessed and tracks her down because HE MUST HAVE HER. She escapes him using cleverness! But, unfortunately ends up in a worse situation. He (and company) rescues her again and takes her away on his ship. On the trip, he heads out on a mission that goes wrong, and is once again in jeopardy! Heroine must audaciously run in to save the day, astonishing all the aliens with her feisty female-ness and proving she is unlike anyone else ever.....except the heroine from the first book who literally just lived the same story. I swear, the author took her first scene outline and just wrote it again with different (weaker) characters; it is that similar.
Second, I don't know what book other reviewers read, but there is no strong female character (SFC) to be found anywhere. The author keeps harping on it, telling us again and again the heroine is a tough, BA, free spirit, but repeating it just does not make it so. The author actually has to back that up with demonstrable proof somewhere in the book, just like any other character trait. Telling me a thing is true is not the same as showing me that thing is true, and being able to parkour doesn't make you a SFC. Instead, this girl acted like an indecisive door mat for ¾ of the book. And when she does actually take action toward the end to rescue her alien, it felt like a completely different character. I just could not credit that the same woman who had wandered through the action for the first parts would actually be allowed to take point on a mission to save anyone. She, in no way, had proved herself capable of doing so to that point.
I also couldn't actually buy that she was supposed to be her brother's head of security. She wandered around alone, making stupid dangerous choices that would affect everyone she cared about, hardly gave an order to anyone, never actually functioned as a leader, couldn't manage to tell an unwanted suitor to back the *$%^ up (because she suddenly DOESN'T LIKE CONFLICT?!), and kept extremely important information from her brother and the rest of her team because she was...selfish? Scared? Ashamed? Confused? Yeah, me too. I certainly couldn’t figure it out. Besides which, we're supposed to believe later that her brother is EXTREMELY worried for her safety, which does not lend itself to appointing little sister to such a dangerous position. Her actions and the way her brother actually treats her are more in keeping with a naive, teenaged baby sister who is cossetted and locked in a tower for her own safety. That is bad characterization for both the brother and for Kali.
And then, nonsensically, once the situation is more stable, this so-called SFC whom he has appointed his head of security, trusted (seemingly) to watch his back in basically the worst gang-war street situation ever, and take care of his people, apparently cannot be trusted to keep herself safe now that (SPOILER) his enemy has been defeated, he's been appointed leader by the aliens, and the aliens are providing support to his new leadership......but yeah, now she's not safe. So unsafe that he does something DRASTIC which I call out in the big spoiler list section below.
Kali's also completely unable to verbalize to her alien why she's upset. She locks herself in the bathroom and refuses to speak to him. Literally says "I'm not talking to you." Again like a petulant teenager. Never once does she call this alien a murderer, kidnapper, or almost-rapist. Which he decidedly is, even if the author wants us to believe he has reason. And if Kali could have said it and then built the relationship from there, maybe this book would have actually been worthwhile.
And third, (Tiny Spoiler Here): On a less major and more ridiculous note, the character named Razor gets the erotic shaving scene? Really? You’re not even TRYING at that point.
All that aside, what was most upsetting to me as I read was the overall attitude toward women. I was extremely disturbed (and perturbed) by a lot of what went on in the subtext of this book. Here's my list of situations/scenes that are the worst offenders.
Before you read it, know this, I do NOT expect these kind of books to be some type of treatise on modern feminism. We're all here for the fun and the fantasy, and I get that. I like escapist fantasy fun as much as the next gal. But I do expect these stories to treat their characters with some level of respect, or it's just not enjoyable, and this book had no respect whatsoever for any of the women in it, particularly Kali.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
1. Kali has NO agency. She ends up being repeatedly passed around between the 3 groups of male characters, usually while she's unconscious (so to be more like an object and less like an inconvenient, actual person). Her own brother accuses Razor of being a rapist, then ends up doing a 180 and believing him when Razor says he just really, really loves her and only wants to protect her, WITHOUT EVER SPEAKING TO KALI TO CONFIRM. To the point that he makes an agreement with Razor that the alien can have her (HAVE HER), as long as he keeps her safe on his own planet. STILL WITHOUT TALKING TO KALI, who's been unconscious, and so, unavailable for comment. She could have been raped and abducted and her brother, who has no way of knowing the truth, has essentially arranged her marriage with her possible rapist. All on the word of that possible rapist.
2. Kali can't stand up for herself. She let's her brother do this to her. He straight up sells her to aliens, sending her to a completely different PLANET, to keep her "safe" without consulting her wishes or even having a conversation with her. She sits there and cries, and lets him, and does not MAKE him have that conversation or even explain himself. She only gets a bit of information once HE decides he can't let her leave with out telling her why he did it. And they still don't have an actual conversation where Kali gets to choose. Big Bro just wants to feel less bad about sending her away and talks at her the entire time.
3. In fact, most conversations involving Kali’s activities, plans, or future happen AROUND her, with no contribution from her, and she just lets it happen. It gets so difficult for the author to credibly exclude her from dialog that Kali actually has to lose consciousness so people can continue talking and acting around her. THIS HAPPENS MORE THAN ONCE. Right when you expect this so-called "SFC" to step in and have an opinion...she passes out. Again.
4. Everyone knows Kali's pregnant...except Kali. And even when she finds out, others (i.e. Razor, her brother, and the male doctor) decide her living arrangements, medical care, and what's best for her, having conversations around her, over her head, out of her presence, and (again!) over her unconscious form.
5. There is not nearly enough difference between the bad blue alien wanting to abduct Kali as a sex slave and Razor wanting to abduct Kali as a sex...mate. Except, Kali wants it? Sort of? But Razor reeeeeally loves her? I'm not even sure. And I don't think Kali had enough information to be sure either. I was just disturbed by the abundance of similarities and complete lack of differences, and Kali apparently wasn't disturbed enough.
6. The nurse-lady tells the aliens to ASK HER HUSBAND how to "handle" women. Because apparently you need a man to tell you that. And he tells them....trust, love and accept. Not a single word about respect. Because what SFC needs that? And no, you cannot assume respect from the list of trust, love, and accept. That list is how you love children. Respect is how you love a partner.
6.5 Then Razor talks to the other alien about his human mate...without talking to the human mate. Because apparently, primary sources are unnecessary. He actually makes an active decision in the book NOT to talk to the other female human mate to get advice. That seems completely bizarre and contrived to me.
7. Women as...pets? Half the time the aliens seem to be in a state of amused surprise - These human women, so feisty! It's adorable! Okay, maybe a culture gap argument can, kind of, apply there. But Kali's brother's conversation with Razor before the ship leaves shows that the human men are no better. He tells Razor how to take care of his new pet...I mean mate, to make sure she gets a lot of exercise and explain what her favorite foods are! I kid you not, like an anxious pet parent dropping a poodle off with a sitter. It is the most awkward conversation I’ve read in a long time, and it all happened (again!) without Kali even being there.
BONUS: This one had nothing to do with women, but really bothered me anyway... WHY IS THE ONLY GAY CHARACTER EVIL?! I thought the brother was going to be gay too, then you just have an evil human guy who can’t take no for an answer. But no. Instead, Mr. Villain ended up being the evil gay guy, and that made me angry.
TLDR version: I was hoping to find out what was going to happen with the other 2 sisters from book 1 and their missing alien friend, which...you find out a bit, right at the end. But, maybe just take it on faith he gets rescued and try book 3. After reading this one and being so frustrated with its treatment of all the female characters I was actually taking notes to write this review, I’m not sure I will be reading any more.
Razor had been sent to Earth as the final resort to bring the rebellion under control. As a High Chancellor for the Alliance it is his duty to take care of things that need to be done quickly and efficiently. His methods are often brutal but at the same time he is fair when dealing with the hold outs and he insures that justice is done. He does not negotiate! Since coming to Earth, he has quickly eliminated all but one of the rebellion's strong holds. The Chicago resistance is divided into two fractions that are waging war against each other. Razor is on a tour of the area when he is shot out of the sky by a rocket. He is rescued by a woman like none other he has ever seen. She gets him out of the rubble, tends his wounds, gets help for him and then disappears. Razor knows that this woman is his Amate, his life mate.
Kali Parks is part of the resistance that is fighting against the Alliance and the takeover of the northern resistance. She fights at her brother’s side and her jobs are to act as his personal guard and protector. Her brother is the leader of one of the two fractions that control Chicago and has yet to surrender to Alliance. After she rescues Razor from the attack, Kali cannot get the alien out of her mind. The reaction she had to the big guy is not normal for her! She has avoided every involvement with males since the invasion and had promised herself to focus only on protecting her brother and her people. However, that does not stop her from returning to the place where she saved her alien. Call it a feeling but she knew that he had been watching her and would be there. When Kali is wounded, Razor returns with her to his temporary base and claims her as his. Will Kali and Razor survive the war that is raging around them? Is there treachery involved? Can Kali accept him as her forever mate? Get this book and find out, you will not be disappointed by the ending! ~TSRBR
Would I recommend this book: Yes! This is the second book in Ms. Smith’s Alliance Series and it is a must read. I love the way she takes two different races and builds strong relationships that can overcome any obstacles. Love according to Ms. Smith’s books does not see race, color or ethnicity. Only love!
Would I read other books by this author: Yes! I look forward to reading any book that Ms. Smith publishes. She is one of my favorite all time authors and I have read all of her published books, some of them more than one time!
***Received an ARC of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review***
I was surprised that what started out as a 3 star book elevated itself to a 4 star read for me. I read the first book and don't recall a bit of it- I read too much:) So for me, this was more of a standalone and I never felt like I was missing too much. The book has action out the wazoo after a somewhat dull start and I was unable to put it down once things got rolling.
Overall: Dude is a big bad ass alien general type who has been ordered to take over the subduing of human rebels who are holding up the peace/rebuilding process. The Alliance has come "in peace" because it's safer for Earth to be a part of the good guys versus the bad guys in the universe and they accomplish this by destroying any major city where humans are fighting back as the world leaders and military have already caved. While tackling the problem that is Chicago, Dude meets Chick and she's the sister of a rebel bad ass faction. Lots of action, hot sex, and mating ensues and we are left to wonder how the fuck is all this going to work out?
Plot: The plot overall is pretty good but the first 35% really dragged for me. But, when it picks up it goes all out and I was captivated till the end. I got a couple chuckles while reading, a butt load of fights/battles and a couple WTF moments. Oh, and I almost cried once so that was unexpected. The plot was fairly predictable but the ride was entertaining for me. And a battle via vomit- that was a win and the first I've ever come across! The sex scenes were pretty yummy. The ending was completely lame and skimmable. Like I said, it was the action that kept this from being a 3 star read.
Characters: Dude and Chick were completely typical. There was lack of communication, insta-mating and all that predictable stuff but I wan't overly annoyed with either one and as I said, the action kept me reading, not any complex characters (of which, there was none). The mating chant of "...give only you my seed..." was terribly annoying. Funny the first time despite serious delivery, super dumb and eyeroll worthy every time after. The secondary characters are mostly from the first book which I don't remember so they did nothing for me personally. The ex-betrothed at the end was completely unnecessary and felt thrown in to make time pass on Dude's alien planet.
Worldbuilding: This takes place mainly in War ravaged Chicago and it was fairly well done. I had a feel for how decimated the big city had become. When we get to the alien planet, we get basically no world building so that was disappointing.
Overall: This is a good read for those loving action with hot alien sex thrown in. It probably is a 3 star read but since I became captivated, I had to make it a four star. I wouldn't put it at the top of your list but check it out if you can't find anything else:)

The Alliance is a consortium of alien races that have banded together to save smaller planets and species. They come to the planets in peace, and try to bring them into the consortium, not to enslave them, but to bring them up to speed, so to speak, with the rest of the universe. They have been on Earth for 6 years now. The Trivators are warrior race, who are the peace bringers for the Alliance. They are the race that comes in to the planets, and tries to make peace with the beings who inhabit the planets. Razor is the final peacemaker. He is the scary one, the one who comes in when peace between warring factions just cannot be obtained. He makes peace, whether folks want it or not....sometimes, his brand of peace is not what the planets inhabitants want. Kali Parks and her brother Destin are trying to hold onto control of Chicago, or what is left of it. They want peace, but Chicago has been divided into two parts, and Colbert Allen, an estranged childhood friend of Destin's holds the other. and they cannot make peace with each other Kali is a great heroine, gritty, street smart, and full of pride, bravery, and inner strength. Razor is totally Alpha, with the attitude that Earth women are weak, and should be protected. He is absolutely livid that Kali is "allowed" to fight and protect herself and her extended family. When these two collide, there is action and adventure. This was a good addition to the first book in the series. These books are linked by secondary characters, but there is no continuing plot line that would not allow you to read them separately. We do meet and catch up a little on characters from the first book ( Razor is the brother of Hunter, the main character in book one), and get a little sneak peek at the next several books, based upon things happening in this book.
This is a book I won at a giveaway on goodreads. Always nice to win something and also nice to get the change to read a book from an author you never read a book from before. When I joined in this giveaway I didn’t realise it was a Science fiction romance. If I had known that I would have probably not joined the giveaway, since I am not a fan of Science fiction stories. But how lucky was I that I didn’t know that, because I loved this story! It is a wonderful one. And I couldn’t stop reading the book. It was a bit disturbing to read what had become of the earth and the humans in the book. But I really like Kali. What a strong woman she is. Protected her family and other people. And what a fighter, well done! And Razor is a strong man, but when he finds something he really cares for he is not afraid to learn new things to get her. That means he is not only a strong man, but he also is strong enough to be open to learn new things, what an amazing man! Uh, Alien. But luckily he was described at lot like a man, only a bit better than a human. The story is written in a realistic way. I could see it happening before my eyes. And I didn’t mind the hot and sexy scenes in it at all. I want to read more from this writer, I book 1 in this series is on my wish list and looking forward to read book 3 when it comes out. I am also curious if one of her other books is as good as this one, but I am not sure which one I should choose to read also. So suggestions are welcome.
Overall 5 out of 5 stars Performance 5 out of 5 stars Story 4 out of 5 stars The Book Junkie Reads . . . 06-02-18 Off the chart narrative visualization . . . Well of course, David Brenin does the job of intransing my mind and pulling me in to a world were humans are the ones destroying the world they invited aliens to come to. He gets me every time.
Now on to meeting Razor, Hunter's older brother and Jesse's new brother-in-law. Razor is the final solution. He is called in when there are no clear results taking place. He makes it happen and that is final. He gets to Chicago and there was no reason for anything to change for this city. That was until one of the opposing sides decide to take down his helicopter. This destructive event leads him to the woman from the picture. The woman that he can't stop thinking about. Kali Parks is a force to be reckoned with. She strong, smarty, savvy, and her brother and their peoples' protector. Watching Kali tempt fate and Razor fight fate. The two of them just felt so right and once Razon had her right there. She was not going anywhere. At least that was what Razor thought. When she gets taking it brings down more then just a war. A cleansing comes upon Chicago.
There were some good secondary characters in this one and it was fun and interesting getting to know them.
Book two of The Alliance, my first read of the year. This is the year I work on my TBR shelf. I'm under no illusion that I'll clear it - does one ever have a clear TBR shelf? That's almost unholy. Anyway, Book two takes us through Hunter's older brother Razor's meeting with his human, Kali Parks. She's been part of Chicago's holdouts for the last six years, but when she finds an alien inside a helicopter that has been shot down near their borders, she can't let him die.
Razor is the alien final solution to Earth's civil wars. To bring the humans into the Alliance and save them from themselves, the fighting must stop. But ever since that human female saved his life, he can't get her out of his mind - and the risks she takes! He'll have to go after, if only to keep her from killing herself.
It was an okay story. What you would have expected to be the ending was nearer the middle, and then the story kept going to wrap up some other loose ends, that honestly, weren't all that loose. They could have waited, IMO. There's also a tremendous amount of head-hopping, although I had no trouble following, so I'm giving that a pass. All in all, not a waste of time. I already have book three, so onward ho!
This is probably one of the most interesting scifi erotica reads I've read so far. The pacing of the story was just right.
Did I mention that I love the characters especially the heroine? She is so awesome. I like her strong personality at the same time I love her independence and the love she has for protecting her brother even at the cost of her life. The way she tries to help/save everyone including Razor (even finding out that he's an alien).
Razor and Kali's attraction to one another is so hot at the same time it is very funny. Especially when they both are trying to fight off their attraction to one another. But then one of them gives and well their chemistry is off the charts. Razor would have his hands full of Kali but they are the perfect match for each other.
I haven't read book 1 yet and although it could be read as a stand alone. I think it would be nice to read it first because there are other characters that are mentioned in the story. I can't wait for book 3 to come out.
All of the components that I've come to expect from a SE Smith story.
As always the characters grab my interest from beginning to end and are the heart of the story. The hero is a "get things done now" alpha male who butts heads with the feisty, determined heroine. Their romance starts at the opening of the tale and grows as the hero and heroine learn that a true relationship involves accepting your partner without trying to change them.
Some great secondary characters that have appeared before and new ones that I hope to see again. I may have to re-read a different Smith series to confirm my guess regarding which character made a very brief surprise appearance.
The plot moves the story along so quickly that I was at 90% before I realized it and finished before I was ready for it to end.
I’m so glad I started reading SE Smith’s books. All of them are wonderful and exciting, doing a great job of drawing the reader in and refusing to let go.
Razor’s book is no different than any of her other books however I think this one is the best so far. It starts with a bang and doesn’t stop until you’re sniffling your way to the very end. Kali and Razor are a perfect fit, and Kali’s reactions are much like my own would and have been in the past! I love this book and so didn’t want to see it ending but now I cannot wait for Dagger’s book!
If this is your first time seeing one of SE Smith’s books then I highly suggest you get this and as many of the others as you can, they’re all spectacular books!
SE Smith writes a great sci-fi action adventure with drool worthy alphas and heroines who can hold their own. Razor is a tough in-charge alien who has met his match in Kali. Razor is tasked to end the rebellion in Chicago, using any means necessary. All Kali wants to do is protect her brother, one of the rebel leaders. Protecting is something Kali is good at, since she is the head of her brother's security team. There are plenty of obstacles to overcome, including traitors on both sides. This book is a fast paced page turner, a satisfying novel. No cliffhanger here, but I can see where the author is going in the next book in the series. Can't wait.
