Twelfth Night at Longbourn

Rate this book
Twelfth Night-a night for wondrous things to happen. At least for other people. In the months after her sisters' weddings, nothing has gone well for Kitty Bennet. Since Lydia's infamous elopement, her friends have abandoned her, and Longbourn is more prison than home. Not even Elizabeth's new status as Mrs. Darcy of Pemberley can repair the damage to Kitty's reputation. More than anything else, she wishes to leave the plain ordinary Kitty behind and become Catherine Bennet, a proper young lady. Her only ray of hope is an invitation to Pemberley for the holidays. Perhaps there she might escape the effects of her sister's shame. Getting to Pemberley is not as simple as it sounds. First she must navigate the perils of London society, the moods of Georgiana Darcy, and the chance encounter with the man who once broke her heart. Perhaps though, as Catherine, she might prove herself worthy of that gentleman's regard. But, in an instant all her hopes are dashed, and her dreams of becoming Catherine evaporate. Will Kitty Bennet's inner strength be enough to bring her heart's desire? On an ordinary night perhaps not, but on Twelfth Night, it just might be enough.

Six time BRAG Medallion Honoree, #1 Best-selling Historical Fantasy author Maria Grace has her PhD in Educational Psychology and is a 16-year veteran of the university classroom where she taught courses in human growth and development, learning, test development and counseling. None of which have anything to do with her undergraduate studies in economics/sociology/managerial studies/behavior sciences. She pretends to be a mild-mannered writer/cat-lady, but most of her vacations require helmets and waivers or historical costumes, usually not at the same time.

She stumbled into Jane Austen fan-dom in the mid '90s with Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility film, having somehow graduated HS without ever having read Austen. It was only a short leap then to consume all of Austen's works, in all their various media forms. In the hopes of discovering more works by Austen, she stumbled into the fan fiction forums, which naturally led to asking 'What if...' herself. Twenty nine books later, she still asks that question.

She writes gaslamp fantasy, historical romance and non-fiction to help justify her research addiction.

The last Bennet sister is left at home under a dismal cloud of disgrace caused by her younger, impetuous sister. The holidays are upon her, but Kitty Bennet is not feeling festive and feels forgotten as Elizabeth, Jane and Mary have their happy lives elsewhere and Kitty's stuck with a parent who barely notices she exists and the other parent lost in her nervous complaint. Something's gotta give. Then Lizzy comes through with a life-line, an invitation to come to Pemberley for the holidays. Kitty will begin the journey with a stop in London to join Georgiana Darcy for some London society and shopping first. A fresh start where people don't know what her sister did and won't judge her for it and a chance for good society to see she is a gentleman's daughter and worthy.

But, of course, her holiday can't be easy. Georgiana Darcy is not going to be a bosom companion who is her entre into high society starting with the Fitzwilliam relations. She's nearly as hoydenish as Lydia. All her beautiful plans turn to ashes. Charles Bingley arrives and is meant to escort them to Pemberley. Once, she thought they had a chance- before Lydia spoiled it all. Now, she fears that wealth and status like Miss Darcy's along with an untarnished family reputation will catch his eye. Or, does it? Will Kitty get exactly what she wants for her holiday gift?

I don't get to read too many P&P variations that focus on Kitty Bennet and I loved seeing her come into her own and figure out who she is. She gets a second chance at romance and learns she's not as bereft of good things and happiness after all when she reaches London and has her own coming of age adventure. Excellent Regency holiday activities and time of family and sweet romance. Great finish to the series.

Vol 4 Twelfth Night at Longbourn 3.5 stars

Purchased as: Given Good Principles Box Set

I am glad this series is finished. Or is it? We still don’t have a completion for Georgiana. Could there be another book for her?

I simply could not abide reading about another sister or young girl acting badly and doing damage to their family. Caroline to the very end was a holy terror and caused trouble, damage and chaos wherever she went.

This book left several threads hanging. I hesitate in asking about them as they may be considered spoilers. So I’ll leave it at that. I assume this is the end of the series????? When I’ve read previous reviews, several have thought that each book was the end. I have no notion if there is another to follow or not. There are several things left hanging and there wasn’t an epilogue.

Kitty was an emotional wreck and ruin most of the time and I simply got to the point I did not care any longer. Unlike those who have read them over time…I read them straight through and I am worn out.

This was Kitty’s journey and her struggles as she reached for her HEA. It didn’t have the excitement of the other books nor the tension. This was Kitty and her overcoming the wreck her sister had inflicted upon the family by her selfish and childish actions. All the other sisters were happily married and out of the scene. They made an appearance at the end but that was all. It was hard to rally around Kitty and her struggles. She vacillated between behaving in an angry, petulant, childish manner to wanting to be a grown up.

The angst was short-lived and not very well developed. Everyone was angry, then they would make up and all would be well again until the next disaster hit. I’ve always wanted a story about Kitty, but I somehow got lost in this one. 3.5 stars

(Note: Potential readers should be made aware that this is the fourth volume in the Given Good Principles series, and that it is recommended that Volume I, II, and III are read prior to reading this one – or at the least, Volume III – All the Appearance of Goodness.)

What if all the Bennet daughters but Kitty were married? What if Lydia’s imprudent elopement was patched up in a way that still left a stain on the Bennet name? What if Kitty’s life consisted of a father who continues to ignore her, a mother that stays to her rooms, and a village that shuns her?

The coming holiday season holds little in the way of happiness and anticipation for our poor Kitty…that is until an invitation to spend the holidays at Pemberley arrives! (Don’t fret, Kitty! Your sisters have not forgotten you!) En route to Pemberley, Kitty spends a few days with Georgiana and her new companion – Mrs. Hartwell. But what starts out to be a thrilling trip to town filled with shopping, friends, and Christmas dinner at an earl’s house, comes to an abrupt end when Georgiana makes a false step and her strict companion forbids her all holiday entertainments…

After encountering Maria Grace’s Kitty (with her talent for sewing and eschewal of Lydia’s imprudent habits) I knew she would make an admirable and praiseworthy heroine! Since this story takes place mostly in London, we spend time with other minor characters – Georgiana Darcy, Mr. Bingley, Louisa Bingley, and the Gardiners. (Don’t expect much Darcy and Elizabeth.) I enjoyed seeing Kitty try to rise from her sister’s disgrace and improve her manners, and my heart went out to her when she suffered slights in Meryton and thought herself unworthy of the Bingleys.

What I loved most about this story was being able to witness the Christmas Day and Twelfth Night celebrations Kitty attended! I loved the scene with the Christmas pudding and all the charms inside (I think it would be a blast to replicate that tradition and see who gets what charm!) and the entertaining parlor games with the Gardiner children! In addition, I loved that the Twelfth Night celebrations took place at Longbourn instead of Pemberley. Call me crazy, but I love the idea of everyone being crowded and cozy at Longbourn – all good cheer and chaos! The Twelfth Night festivities were entertaining to witness and there are quite a few surprises in store for Kitty and for us readers! The conclusion kind of turns a little bit fairytale-ish at the end, though. It may not be as credible, but it was a very sweet and heartwarming ending.

One character I do wish we could have spent a little bit more time with is Georgiana. She started off bearing a resemblance to Lydia and there seemed to be good amount of contention between her and her companion. I would have liked to seen how their issues played out and a little more development of Georgiana’s character.

I found much to admire and appreciate in Maria Grace’s Give Good Principles series! I adored the new situations, revelations, and characters she created with her stories! A very inventive and introspective series! I recommend you read all four elegant volumes!

An enjoyable conclusion to the series as instead of an Elizabeth and Darcy epilogue, we experience the life of Kitty Bennett. She is challenged as the last sister to find happiness amongst her family's scandal. I loved the ending with its beautiful surprises.

Twelfth Night at Longbourn (Given Good Principles)

This is the 4th book in Maria Grace's series, Give Good Principles. Poor Kitty. Longbourn is a prison for her. Lydia, after all the trouble of stopping her elopement the first time, she ups and does it again, only this time nobody was there to stop her. Jane, Elizabeth, and Mary are all in Derbyshire since their weddings. Kitty is invited to go to London to stay with Georgiana and her companion, Mrs. Hartwell. Mrs. Hartwell was hired, because Georgiana didn't seem to carry over any of Lady Matlock's instructions the months she was with her. When Kitty gets to London and meets Georgiana so of her actions are similar to Lydia's. Up in her room at Darcy House, Kitty is given a new dress from her three Derbyshire sisters. Darcy has also given her money to buy a matching hat. She is thrilled beyond words and reflects on how envious Lydia would be. Georgiana decides that she should be Catherine insisted of Kitty. She is reprimanded for her attitude by MRs. Hartwell since a name is personal. The next day the three ladies go shopping for Kitty's hat. Working with the proprietor, she and Kitty work up a new hat. When won't tell Georgiana what it looks like, Georgiana gets a little snippy. Mrs. Hartwell counsels her again. Mr. Bingley come into the chocolate store when they ordering hot chocolate with foams on top. Bingley is happy to see everyone, especially Kitty. Georgiana tries to monopolize the conversation to draw Mr. Bingley to herself. Several times Georgiana is reminded that she is not out was yet, but she continues to act like an uncontrollable child instead of a sensible young lady. Mrs. Hartwell speaks to Kitty while they eat dinner in the former's sitting room. The Darcys believe that Kitty can help take Georgiana's foolish behavior before she brings embarrassment to the family. It is Christmas Eve, and Kitty is remembering the times she and her sisters would decorate with holly and fir swags along the banister. When she arrives downstairs, a surprise box from Lizzy is waiting. Georgiana gets very excited, especially when Kitty decides to make a kissing Bourgh. When Mr. Bingley shows up with his sister, Georgiana stands under the kissing Bourgh. Mrs. Hartwell is extremely upset at her carelessness and outrageous behavior. When Georgiana argues with her, she drags Georgiana upstairs. Returning while Kitty is hosting the Bingleys and the Gardiners, she explains that Georgiana is ill and will not be going to Matlocks for dinner tomorrow and possibly not to Pemberley. The Gardiners take her with them and invite the Bingleys for Christmas dinner. She talks to her Aunt about how mad she is with Lydia. Aunt Gardiner shares Lydia's correspondence with her. Lydia is not having fun with parties and balls. She is in a poor life in dire straits needing money. While she feels for her, she brought it on herself. Christmas dinner included the Gardiners, the Bingleys, Mr. and Miss Richard's, a clerk of Mr. Gardiner's. Everything is going well, and they all have a wonderful time. When the Christmas flaming pudding arrives, everyone is reminded about the charms inside. Kitty hopes she doesn't get the thimble again which means she'll be a spinster. Luckily Kitty gets the ring. After supper, her Aunt played the harpsichord and all sang. Then some played cards while others played bullet pudding. The next days, Boxing Day, the Gardiners took things to the foundling hospital they supported. To their surprise, the Bingleys were also at the hospital, and they support it, too. In discussing the plight of some of the children in the foundling home, Louisa States, "It only takes one sibling to ruin the reputation of a family. It is widely agreed, the egregious behavior of one destroys them all." The Bingleys invite the Gardiners for dinner the next night, but only Kitty can make it. Arriving, she is made to wait for an hour. When she hears crying, she finds Louisa upset and ashamed of the scandal Caroline has caused in Scarborough. She helps Louisa to eat something and puts her to bed. When Bingley arrives, he tells her to leave actor telling the story about Caroline. She goes upstairs, but turns around to confront him. He yells at her again, she slaps him and tells why he should not be with her. Turning to go, she feels a presence behind her. He asks her to marry him. The yes response makes them both happy. While drinking chocolate, Bingley comes up with a great idea. He's going to give a Twelfth Night Celebration in Meryton. Kitty says her mother already had plans for their party. He has some business to take care of while the ladies pack. When Bingley goes to the Gardiners' home, Kitty comes along to pack. Permission is given with a letter to Bennet. Back at Longbourn, Mrs. Bennet refines her menus and orders a larger cake. Bingley, Kitty, and Louisa go into town to run those errands for Mrs. Bennet. Kitty assures them that there will be a party. The night of the party arrives, and Kitty feels funny standing first without any of her sisters. Through the door comes the Darcys, Pierces, Fitzwilliams, and a bunch of their neighbours. When Mr. Bennet announces Kitty's betrothal, many are happy others jealous. Pierce gets to pick the scene of the play. He has the men setting up chairs on each side of a center aisle. They have a real wedding, because Bingley planned it all.

So, 7 years after I read Books 1, 2, and 3, I'm finally getting to book 4! Kitty was a bit emotional for me (always seems to have her knuckle or fist in her mouth), but if I think of her place in the family, and everything that had happened leading to her story, I get it. I liked her love interest, I thought it was refreshing, and touching!

I thought the change in characterization for Georgiana was very interesting! I welcomed the changes, but I don't know if others would like it as much!

This is a very short book. It is book 4 of the Given Good Principles series. I encourage that you at least read the previous book before starting this one or you will be utterly lost.

This book opens approximately one year after Lizzy and Jane married their most deserving husbands. Kitty is alone at Longbourn following the elopement of Lydia with a soldier. In the original work Jane Austen shows that an elopement; while not ideal, is not a life destroying occurrence. In this book it is; Kitty has been cut by all the citizens of Meryton but Charlotte Lucas, even Maria will not speak to her. Mrs. Bennet has again taken to her chambers and will not even speak and Mr. Bennet is locked away in his book room. Kitty's burgeoning friendship with Miss (Louisa) Bingley has been dropped and she is forced to handle the duties of the Mistress of Longbourn.
She prays for escape but cannot conceive a method. When she finally comes to a solution it is usurped by one from Lizzy, Kitty shall come to Pemberley for 12th night. First she will travel to London, stay at the Darcy townhouse with Miss Darcy and then onto Pemberley.

The Georgiana of this book is selfish, spoiled, rude and pouty. She suffers from the boy craziness of Lydia. Kitty upon arriving in London becomes a dual personality of wanting to behave as a lady ( who she calls Catherine) and when failing ( Kitty). Under the tutelage of Miss Darcy's companion she is always finding fault in herself and ignoring the faults and failures of others. [It's really quite annoying]

When Georgiana [a Caroline / Lydia chimera] is so ill mannered that Christmas with the Earl and her trip to Pemberley are canceled Kitty finds herself at the Gardiners. The Bingley are able to rescue the trip to Pemberley and join the Gardiners for Christmas dinner.

The author does offer a great deal of insight into the Regency period and customs. But it is surrounded by really insipid characters. To me Georgiana is the most troubling. I believe Darcy and Lizzy would have locked her away at Pemberley and married her off to the first man who would take her. Kitty's constant anxiety and tears become wearying and every conflict is all but instantly resolved.

Caroline, who was banished to the north in the previous book, creates havoc for the Bingley family. This does give Kitty an opportunity to shine and Louisa a chance to become more real but the outcome of the incident is rather unlikely and the author rushes to give us the happiest of endings.

Twelfth Night at Longbourn is the fourth book in the Given Good Principle series. The focus in this book, is on Kitty Bennet, but as Maria Grace has mixed up the couples a bit in this series, I would recommend that you read the previous books for clarity, or at the very least read All the Appearance of Goodness (Vol 3).

Kitty is the only one of the Bennet girls left at Longbourn. Shortly after Jane, Elizabeth, and Mary are married, Lydia foolishly elopes with Lt. Harper, leaving Kitty to suffer the effects alone. Shunned by the people of Meryton. With her mother refusing to come out of her rooms and her father keeping to his library, poor Kitty is terribly lonely. She is saddened by the fact that it will be impossible to find a husband now and can’t bare the thought that life will continue on in this matter. She sees little hope of happiness.

When she receives an invitation to go to Pemberley for Twelfth Night, she rejoices in the fact that Lizzy didn’t forget her! Now she can get away from Meryton! It is arranged that she will spend a few days in London with Miss Darcy before traveling to Pemberley. But can she really escape Lydia’s disgrace? Or will it follow her to London?

I wasn’t happy with this Georgiana. She is not the shy girl we know from the original Pride and Prejudice and she has not learned much since the first book of this series. She is a brat. She is pushy and doesn’t have very good manners. I didn’t really like her companion, Mrs. Hartwell, either. She was very strict, which Georgiana needs, but Mrs. Hartwell is way to harsh. Also, she seems sketchy to me. I find it hard to believe Elizabeth and Darcy would hire someone like that.

I enjoyed the ending very much! I was glad all the sisters (except for Lydia) were together and that Kitty gets her Happily Ever After!

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy of the book for my honest opinion.

Kitty is a bit of a whiner for me. She seems to be constantly whingeing about her fate after Lydia's infamous elopement. It has left her socially bereft. Her only friends seems to be the Lucas's and even here Maria pretends that she needs something urgently whenever she sees Kitty. Being offered a chance to go to Pemberley seems a god sent opportunity to just get away from the salacious gossip of the town and the nervous breakdown of her mother. Her father seems just indifferent. Only Lizzy could understand him and get him to smile.

Enroute to Pemberley with Miss Darcy and her new companion, Kitty encounters fresh problems. Miss Darcy is not compliant, polite in company and her companion rules that she is not fit to grace the august assemblies at Pemberley. Does this mean that Kitty goes back home? A fresh adventure awaits her with the Bingley's opportune arrival and Mr. Bingley offers to escort her along with his sister as chaperone back to Pemberley. The Bingleys have problems of their own with the behaviour of their sister Caroline so they have mutual stuff to grumble about!

Now it gets to the fairy tale part which was a bit too cloying for me. A pleasant read however. I like PP variations in whatever form. This was a good one and gave one of the hitherto ignored sisters a good airing. Why should Lizzy have all the fun?

Having read the other three volumes of this "Given Good Principles" series I must say that I was not as drawn into this story as I was into some of the others. The premise is good, the events logical but with more potential than I found addressed here. The book's beginning actually gave me a dislike of Kitty. She did not elicit my sympathy. Maybe her character just was not developed to show that she had earned such. Impressions of her following Lydia's behavior remain in my mind. Her having learned a lesson does not resonate as having truly occurred for me. There just seemed to be so much whining going on. Lydia's part in Catherine's feelings is not completely explained until later. And Mrs. Bennet seems more irrational and self-centered than in the original story. The actual Twelfth Night party was the best part of the book, giving Bingley some part to play in planning this surprise for Kitty. I would have liked to have read more sexual tension between this couple, especially with pictures in my mind of him and Jane from so many other stories. *Spoiler*: But at least, we do have our closure to marrying off all the Bennet girls.

This fouth volume of the series is the one I liked less. I would have prefered to see more of the Darcys and the Fitzwilliams, however I appreciated this glance at Kitty's destiny. I really can put up with the version of Georgiana the author gives, I can't picture her as a sort of Lydia, however it was a quick and pleasurable read.

Lovely variation to Pride and Prejudice

A very enjoyable variation of the story. It was fun to see Kitty instead Jane with Mr. Bingley. It shows the difficulties when you are the last sister left at home and the problems the family faced after Lydia's disgrace. How through it all Kitty grew in strength and prevailed in the end with the help of family and friends. A wonderful series and I look forward to reading more from this very talented author.

So I picked this up at a thrift store. Sure, it's the fourth in a series, but it's Pride & Predjudice fan fiction. I figured I could figure out what was going on.
Reader, I was wrong.
Who are these people? What are these situations? Is this just a totally new story, but with the same names as the original characters. Kitty is marrying WHO?
Well, I was lost, but this has told me that I will not be going back to read the others.

excellent quartet conclusion

In this 4 part series exploring an alternate to Pride and Prejudice, this book is the most triumphant happy ending.
Well written, beautiful exploration of the characters and the fabrics - needed a fabric sample book as I read to understand all the different terms!

Beautifully written

I enjoyed this book because it take the usual characters and puts them in believable situations. There are surprisingly good reasons for all that occurred and the end is gorgeous.

This was NOT the wrap-up I expected (featuring Kitty, of all people??) and Georgiana was different than canon, but I ended up liking the changed, grown character of Kitty & how this series played out. Quite enjoyable.

I saw this in a second hand bookshop in Alton and thought I would try it.
It is not advised to read this #4 in the series without reading 1-3. This is a parallel universe Pride and Prejudice, where Miss Darcy’s character is completely different and Mr Bingley is still available. I just could not get into it and gave up reading it.

Twelfth Night—a night for wondrous things to happen.
At least for other people.
Nothing has gone well in the months since her sisters' weddings for Kitty Bennet. Since Lydia’s infamous elopement, her friends have abandoned her, and Longbourn is more prison than home. Not even Elizabeth's new status as Mrs. Darcy of Pemberley can repair the damage to Kitty’s reputation. More than anything else, she wishes to leave the plain, ordinary Kitty behind and become Catherine Bennet, a proper young lady. A Great read and narration. (I "read" the Audible edition.)
