Brooklyn Prescott (if that's even her real name) is the new girl at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence, now that she's moved back to the States after two years living in London. Rosewood, a boarding school for children of the rich and famous and known for its celebutantes, is missing just one element important to any junior's education: boys. But luckily for Brooklyn, and the rest of the Rosewood girls, there's a boys' boarding school, The Westwood Academy, just a few miles away. On her very first day, Brooklyn meets Will, a gorgeous and flirty boy on campus to help with move in. But is he who she thinks he is? And what about Brady, the cute stable boy? Or Jared, the former child actor with his grown-up good looks who can always make her laugh? As Brooklyn settles in at Rosewood, she's faced with new friends, new challenges and new opportunities to make herself into the girl she always wanted to be. Whoever that might be. Taking The Reins is the first installment of The Rosewoods, an exciting new Young Adult series for readers who love fun, flirty love stories.
A survivor of adolescence, Katrina Abbott loves writing about teens: best friends, cute boys, kissing, drama. Her main vice is romance, but she's been known to succumb to the occasional chocolate binge. She may or may not live in California with her husband, kids and several cats.
Taking the Reins is the first book in The Rosewoods series. I love a book with a good amount of YA drama, and this book had just that. It reminds me just a bit of the Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd in that way, and I’m addicted to that series! I can see this being one of those series I binge read because after finishing this audio book, I’ve already started the second one!
Brooklyn Prescott is new to The Rosewood Academy, an all girls boarding school for the rich and/or famous. She’s a junior in high school and is bummed about going to an all girls school. That is, until she finds out that Westwood Academy for boys is right down the way and the two mingle quite a bit. Brooklyn makes fast friends with many of the girls at school. There is also a lot of boy drama, which I love LOL! There is Brady, Dave, and Jared. There are things I like about all three but I gotta say- I’m rooting for
Taking the Reins is narrated by Ann Marie Gideon. This is my first audiobook by this narrator, and I thought she did a great job voicing Brooklyn Prescott. Brooklyn is a teenager, and even though I’m sure Ann is not, you couldn’t tell. She sounded like I imagine Brooklyn would sound. The audio book was high quality and this is one of those books I would recommend listening to over reading.
This story was a lot of fun to listen to. It’s one that definitely has me wanting to know more about Brooklyn and her friends at the Rosewoods!
The author of this book sent me a free copy and assured me that I would hate it. Well, goddamnit, I didn't. I expected to hate it, not because the author told me that I would, but because I'm not a fan of romance novels at all. In fact, I avoid them like the plague. I can't fucking stand romance novels.
I hate them because, for the most part, they're just cardboard characters doing stupid things for love. Well, this book doesn't have any cardboard characters. The characters are real, full of life, and even unpredictable. I never knew what they were going to do. I tried predicting the outcome, and failed at every turn.
This story is about a teenage girl named Brooklyn who's sent to a boarding school, because her parents had too much money, and frankly, they're bored of her. So, they shipped her off to America, all the way from London, because the farther teenagers are away from their parents, the better.
Brooklyn gets the most awesome roommate. She's a rich e-commerce girl, named Emmie, who gives away everything she owns to charity, because her parents are such wealthy fucks, that they find the idea of charity offensive. So, when Emmie gives things away, she's actually just being a rebel, like every other goddamn teenager. But it's definitely a unique way of rebellion.
Unfortunately, this book isn't about Brooklyn and Emmie's torrid gay love affair. I was hoping for it, that's for sure. They had such chemistry. They belonged together, goddamnit.
Instead, the story is about horses, and their huge cocks. And one boy's love affair with his sexy horse. Wait, no it's not. Sorry. Again, that's what I hoped it would be about. Because, at one point, it's made clear that one boy does like his horse way too much. So, who knows what happens behind the closed barn, right? I mean, I'm just saying... That guy is totally fucking his horse when nobody is looking.
And then there's the panty raid. At least 1/3 of this book is dedicated to a panty raid. The boys from the all-boy school down the road, sneak in and steal the undies from the all-girl school. Then, the girls go steal the boy's undies, because what else is there to do?
Goddamnit. That's not 1/3 of a book. That's a chapter. Maybe two. I can only read so much about panty stealing. I mean, maybe if they had stuck the girl panties up a horse's ass. Or tied up one of the boys with girl panties, and sexually tortured him with a riding crop. That may have been worth 80 pages or so. But not just panty stealing. Come on...
❝Panty raid, Brooklyn. They snuck in here while we were on our way to the dance and stole our panties.❞
Fin de la historia. ¿Conclusión? Tonto y absurdo. Desde luego no pienso leer el resto de la saga.
I am at short of words for kind of book this is. I really don't think after reading this whole lot of thing that is full of fun, romance, friendship and teenage adventure, I am able to explain for what I felt while going through it. More or less this reminds me of my days of academics. Katrina Abbott really made me her fan. Back to back reading from this series and steadily I became admirer of her writing. Very few writers knew how to maintain that line between romance and vulgarity, sensuality and sexuality. She obviously worth reading for the clean books from coming-of-age or young-adult. Whole series seems to be going so lightly and that's the main reason why I liked it. Brooklyn is sensation with her naive nature and Emmie with her mature and naughty part. Male protagonists are written like Alpha ones but still no such thing as 'unnecessary sexual advances' shown in this book yet. This is the very base author maintained throughout and is appreciable. Transitional Life of Brooklyn from UK to USA kept limited with more focus on how she is keeping herself with all new places and people. Lot of fun created out of group of girls which quite obvious in school/College life. That carefree time of everyone's life's golden period depicted very well. The main part is every sort of thing is created as per it's requirements. Not much exaggeration of any unnecessary act and no undermining of any other beauty of this book.
Loved this book a lot and I think I found a bit of interest through Katrina, again, in this genre.
First and foremost, big up to Netgalley and Patchwork Press - Cooperative for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
In summary, the book is about Brooklyn Prescott who joins Rosewood Academy (an all girls school) and how she manages to fit in with the change in environment and new people in her life. Brooklyn wasn't really very out there or a social person, prior to going to Rosewood. But she quickly finds herself fitting in quickly with her school mates. The only problem is that the boy whom she'd thought she might have a possible romantic chance with ends up being her roommates boyfriend.
Other than that, the book mostly touches on her settling in at Rosewood. It's the first in the book series.
The book wasn't bad but it wasn't overly that good either. It was lukewarm, for lack of a better word. But if time and opportunity permits me I'd still like to read the follow up in the series, just to see how it follows up.
What I didn't like about the book was the fact that Brooklyn seemed to like everyone. She had a thing for Brody, a thing for Jared and also a thing for Will/Dave, and found almost everyone else attractive. It's not bad to give credit where credit is due, but honestly I found it rather tedious. Her feelings towards all three boys aren't definite. She'll be wanting Brody to kiss her one minute, then the next she'll be swooning over Dave and then she'd be having rainbows shooting out of her ass cause of Jared. Another thing was the fact that, itfelt like she didn't seem to understand that she's not exactly from a poor background. She isn't at Rosewood on scholarship, but she still manages to give that whole starstruck-over-how-rich-everyone-is kind of vibe. And it's not in that whole wow, even we aren't that rich kind of way. It seems at times like she'd been living under a rock prior to her joining Rosewood. Plus I found it hard to believe that all those fancy schmancey boys are that good looking. Literally all the boys she sees are hot. That's not very realistic.
Overall, I'd give this book about 3 stars. Like I said earlier not that good, but also not that bad either.
I received this ebook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review... When the author of this book approach me she described this book as being cutesy fun romance. At the time I was really into my romance and contemporary reads. Took me a while to pick this up and get into this book properly. This book is defiantly cutesy and fun to read. However this book started off so clinche and slow. Also came across quite young about halfway through I really started enjoying this. By the end I actually wanted to know what was going to happen. I guess it was the character's Brooklyn and Brady that I really began to love. I loved their funny dialogue. A lot of this book made me laugh out loud which is never a bad thing. Overall did really enjoy this book pacing could have been better but I really want to read the second book to see what happens. I would recommend this to people who like cutesy clean romance with a touch of humour. Thanks again to the author for allowing me to read this for free :)
Less than 200 pages this book is a super quick read and currently a free book on kindle. Brooklyn’s character is cute and relatable. I like the whole boarding school premise. The author gives her a few love interests which is interesting. I would recommend to those who like YA PG romance novels. I think I will probably read the rest of the series.
I started this book one morning with the intention of reading a bit then doing some work for one of my many assignments due in- that did not work out well. Mainly because this book was such an easy read and I found myself reading chapter after chapter and then it was finished- I wish it had been longer.
The first few chapters are based heavily on character description mainly the main character and narrator of the story, Brooklyn- a new student arriving at a boarding school she will be attending- and introducing in detail each new character which Brooklyn meets as she starts her school year. The description of each new character is rich in information giving details about their personality traits that made them all into very different characters and made them instantly engaging to me. As the story progressed and relationships began to form I started to love or hate the different characters; my main loves being Brady and Jared, and my hates being Dave because I’m still annoyed with him.
The story is well paced introducing new characters and relationships exactly when they are needed- this isn't one of those annoying girl meets boy, boy is unable to sustain a relationship with girl, girl sits about waiting for him to change his mind books- there are plenty of other options and I hope Brooklyn explores these no matter how much I love Brady.
The story line is not one which has blaringly obvious twists and turns, it has subtle character developments which made me want to read more (which is why I wanted it to be longer).
This is defiantly to be added to my list of favourites and I can't wait to read more in this series of books.
First off, I am totally team Brady right now. Anyways Taking the Reins was a good book. I give it like 4.2 stars, made me laugh out loud. I couldnt even read it downstairs with everyone, I looked like a retard laughing at my book. Brooklyn seems like a sweet but has a shy person. She gets nervous at times which i was getting nervous with her. I was totally mad when she found out who Emmelines boyfriend was. But the author did a good job writing this story, I wish it was longer though. This book only took me a couple hours to read. All I know is I was reading and laughing, next thing you know the book is over and I am reading the excerpt to the next one. Which I cant wait for it to be released. So I can continue on reading Brooklyn's journey with a new school, friends, boys, and whatever other surprises in the near future.
I do wish the author gave more background on some of the characters Brooklyn came across for the first time, like where they are from and who the parents are or why they are at the private schools.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh or just have a nice relaxing read
I received a copy of this book from the author (Ms. Katrina)in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit, before reading the book, I didn't know much about the story or what to expect. I believe it was going to be a cute, clean love story. In fact, the author called it a "fun, flirty love story". I did find it fun. The author did a good job of setting up 3 different "love triangles" which will make it fun for the readers to determine who she will end up with.
There were a few things that I didn't like about the story. Whereas it is a "clean" story because no one does anything inappropriate, I felt like several overtly sexual innuendos that I didn't really appreciate. I also didn't like the abrupt ending. I felt like the story was really short, the author could have added some more length to it and ended it a little less choppy.
A pretty cute start to a series. I accidentally read this out of order, so I already know some things that will happen later on in the series... which is my own fault for making it predictable for myself. But the characters were definitely likable and make the story fun to read. I would consider reading more in this series.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This book was okay. It was enjoyable to read/listen to, and it was short and easy. The main fault with it is that it was generic. There was nothing to differentiate it from other teen school romance books.
I enjoyed this boarding school story, the characters were well and the plot was entertaining. there were some sweet moments, and some funny ones as well. It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat, but it was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
2.5 Was this good? not really was it engaging? no was it fun? absolutely.
This has a similar energy to wild child in that it's not objectively good but it is fun and light hearted, and if i'd read this when i was 13-15 i probably would have rated it a lot higher and looked back on it with nostalgia. But now it's just another quick, fun read.
"'Come on you two,' Evan protested, picking up his end of the trunk. 'You can flirt on the way.'"

Taking The Reins is the first installment of The Rosewoods, an exciting new Young Adult series for readers who love fun, flirty love stories.
My Thoughts:
Taking the Reins pleasantly surprised me. I assumed that based on the title and cover, it would center around horse-back riding. It did involve a bit of it, but the book was mainly about the events that took place while at the barn. The storyline was absolutely adorable, and the love interests were cute as well. I thought that the author did an excellent job with ensuring that the reader felt part of the story. She also left a lot of loose ties in this book that makes me really want to read the next one. The main character was extremely relatable. I was really upset when the book was over, and I'm super excited to read the next one!
The one criticism that I did have about the book is character development. I felt as if the characters needed a lot more development. The author did a fair job with giving characters personality, but rarely did she describe the physical traits of the characters. When she did do this, she could have provided many more details than what was given.
I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely read the next one. I would recommend this to ages 16 and up.
I received this book for free from the author for an honest review
Brooklyn, an American girl that just came back from London and attend to all-girls boarding school, Rosewoods. Rosewoods is not an ordinary boarding school because it's a school for rich and famous people. When the first time she arrived in that school, a hot boy named Will helped her to move in to school's dorm. Apparently Will is a student of all-boys boarding school, Westwoods. Just like Rosewoods, Westwoods is also 'extra ordinary' school.
Brooklyn has a thing with Will. He's funny and likes to flirt. Brooklyn thought maybe Will also interested with her. Until she finally found out that he has a girlfriend already...
Being in school with very 'wow' friends was not easy for Brooklyn. Well, at first. But finally she managed to make friends.
One of the reason why Brooklyn wants to be in this school was because of the stables. She loves riding horse and wants to be a part of Rosewoods equestrian team.
And then she met Brady. A hot equestrian.
But apparently Brady is also not an 'ordinary' equestrian. He's a student of Westwoods, and also a coach in Rosewoods. And he's also an Olympian.
Brooklyn's encounter with hot boys didn't stop there. Then she met with Jared. A hot former child actor.
So, who's going to end up with Brooklyn?
This story is unique. This is the first time I read a teen love story where the main character is so into horses. Unlike the usual stories that always have school-parties-sex-repeat pattern. This book is different, funny and fresh. And we can't guess the story line easily, which is good because it's making me curious and excited to read the next book!
I was lucky to receive a kindle copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Brooklyn Prescott is a very fortunate girl. Having just returned to the US from a stint in London, her wealthy parents place her in the prestigious Rosewood Academy for (other wealthy) girls, just 5 miles up the road from Westwood Academy for (very handsome) boys. As the new girl, Brooklyn is the talk of both the schools, and in an elite world which she has never really felt comfortable in, she must now try to fit in.
Taking the Reins is a cute, fun, boarding school romance. It was easy to read, in first person, quite engaging, if perhaps a little badly paced. The novel ended very abruptly, and I had honestly expected more. I felt like not enough had happened for the book to end. I was left wanting more, but more out of this as a first book in a series. Some more drama and suspense could have rectified this, by way of school secrets, more family/personal secrets, etc... a further subplot to expand the world of Rosewood and Westwood more, and to create more intrigue. The book finished abruptly without any serious romantic development with any of her love interests.
The romance aspect of this book was mostly sweet, but with a few surprising sexy moments thrown in! The romances themselves were nice to read, and left me wanting more, however I felt that perhaps too many love interests were introduced to soon - leaving Brooklyn with several undeveloped relationships by the end of the first book. I liked the ambiguity around who Brooklyn's main love interest would be, but would have preferred perhaps one of the boys to be introduced in a later book.
What I really liked about this book was that there was no "mean girl" antagonist as is often seen in stories similar to this. It was really nice to read about a group of girls who are genuine friends, and who weren't trying to undermine one another for the sake of getting a date, getting ahead in school, or just for fun.
All in all, Taking the Reins was a nice, quick, but engaging read. I'm looking forward to more.
A brilliant and fabulously fun new series for teens!
Even though the cover caught my eye instantly this story isn’t just about horse riding, as it is more like chick-lit for the animated adolescent seeking out an entertaining read. Katrina Abbott encapsulates with nostalgic realism those turbulent years between childhood and adulthood, within the warm and friendly writing style. From the stress of examinations and schoolwork study to shopping with friends and seeking out boys are just some of the few things at the centre of Brooklyn’s life. The feisty, likable main protagonist is the main element of this story that makes it so compelling to read. I certainly think that many teenagers of today will regard the author as a writer who ‘gets’ her target readership.
In The Rosewoods: book 1 Brooklyn is the new girl at the Academy for the rich & famous. Having moved back to the states from the UK she must re-establish herself within a dynamic culture, and try not to be distracted by the Boys at Westwood Academy. She soon is swept into a whirlwind of events including riding at the stables and study…plus, also including bumping into several cute guys! Will, Brady and Jared are three boys who capture her interest - - but who will she pick?
This story of school life highlights the struggles and challenges one faces, including making new friends and making the most of opportunities that are presented. As I was transported into the heart of teen life I was taken on a thrilling journey of discovery, full of fun and laugh-out-loud memorable moments. Ideal for the young reader {aged 12-16} who love young adult stories that are fresh, engaging and convincing! I cannot wait to read more within the Rosewoods series that has sparked a sense of interest…
·I would like to thank Katrina for providing me with an e-copy of her book, to read and review*
Taking The Reins tells the story of a recently-moved Brooklyn Prescott to an all-girls school. I actually really like the light-hearted way the story was told. Nothing too provocative or complex, just a really good, world-building, introductory book that would serve really well as a springboard for more complex issues. The story itself has some really good points but at times I felt it lacked some depth, but it really just fitted well with the simplistic feel of the story.
Brooklyn's journey into the well-cushioned world of celebrities and wealthy teens started off pretty mild - room mixups, troublesome schedules, mean deans and liking the wrong boy? Yeah, I didn't really see the last one coming but I'm glad the story didn't go off too complicated with that plot because that would've ruined it for me. She and Emmie has such a good friendship and it would've been sad if they had boy issues so early in the story.
The abundance of characters introduced so quickly into the story threw me off a little bit but it was understandable, we'd want to hear about them early to get to know them one by one. I'm really glad the author has given each character their appropriate screen time and that each one was given a distinct personality. The girls were pretty decent ladies themselves, i'm really glad no one was being snobby and creating unneccesarry drama. As for the boys, the whole thing seemed a little too "dating game" at the dance part but there couldn't have been a better way to introduce them all. I'm really rooting for Brady right now although he maintains to be an enigmatic character still.
I enjoyed the story for what it was, nothing too complicated and intense for an introductory book. I recommend it for anyone wanting a relaxing, light right.

I received this book for my honest review!
Let me say that I didn’t finish the book as fast as I always do. I find the first part of the book slow pace and I was about to give up, but then it turn out well. Just OK, the storyline well I just say that I was waiting for something more, something to happened.
I felt quite related to some of the problems Brooklyn goes thru in her new school I fell that those issues were well played thru out the book but, Most of the book felt written for teens not YA, I don’t know if that was just my perspective. But You have to give it a chance to make your proper opinion about it.
The characters are OK, Brooklyn I felt that you received a certain description about her being simple and shy but all the boys can keep from being attracted to her (like Bella from twilight). I didn’t work for me!
I wanted to like this book more but I felt maybe I wasn’t suit for this one.
I can say I honestly love this book. It's hilarious, has a good plot & characters, and has a really good plot. First off, I'm still nawt over the panties situation (lol). Brooklyn is a character I found myself relating to because of her struggle to be a new & improved Brooklyn. My complaint with her is that she thought EVERY BOY IN THE BOOK WAS JUST UTTERLY GORGEOUS. Like please take me to your world where everyone is hot. I also really loved Emmie. Maybe it was because she was much more developed than Brook's other friends. She is so down to earth, lovable, and just flat out amazing. Brook's other friends were awesome I guess but nawt as awesome as Emmie of course. What I really liked about this book is that there was no "mean girl." You don't get how sick I am of them being in stories. Its so cliché. As for the guys: Im seriously on Team Brady. He's just so perfect for Brook. Don't get me wrong, I love Dave--but he's with Emmie. I can't imagine what would happen if Brook hooked up with him--I mean think of Emmie. Abe/Jared is also really cool so he would be my second choice. All the characters were extremely funny. I looked like a laughing idiot reading this book. Overall, a truly amazing book. I HAVE to get the second one. Can't wait.
Okay, so I wrote this review some time ago, but somehow I deleted by accident... Here I go again: I really loved this book, it is cute, funny and so easy to read! The characters are all very interesting with a part of their past or personality to discover throughout the book. Even the main character is kind of mysterious haha... I am currently dreaaaaaming of attending a school like this. The storyline is so so well thought of. There is not too much drama, not too cliche, but still enough to keep the story ongoing. However, I wished the book was slightly longer, but I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE SECOND BOOK! I kindof guessed the theme is going to be about a masquerade ball from the title and the first chapter. I can't wait! I think this series is going to be so fun to read if the author continues with her good work!
I can't remember what else I wrote in the other review...
I wish it hadn't been so short! I wish there had been more and I can't wait utnil the second book!! I loved it and I liked how she has plenty of guys to pick from *wink wink* Brooklyn was also very relatable to me, in the way that she tries to become a better her in a place where no one knows you. I mean come on, don't we all wish we could just start over in a new place sometimes?
Brooklyn wasn’t the fun girl or the popular girl. She was the plain girl. The girl no one noticed. However now was the best time for 17 year old Brooklyn to change her image. She was not only starting a new school she was also moving countries. The shy awkward Brooklyn was gone. Now she was flirty, fun Brook.
This is a lovely fun teen romance suitable for young teens. I loved that the girls were all nice to each other and immediately accepted Brooklyn into their circle. Even in a girls boarding school they still managed to have some fun and even wrangle a few sneaky meet-ups with the boys at night. I am sure a lot of young girls will relate to Brooklyn. (Who wouldn’t want to start all over again with a new school and new image?) I would recommend this novel to any teenage girl that enjoys fun, light reads. Taking the Reins is the first novel in The Rosewoods series.
*I received a free ePub copy in exchange for an honest review*
Overall, I rather enjoyed this story. But it felt somewhat... lacking to me. But it was good I will give props to the author for that. But I believe the concept could be executed a little better. Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed this story. Maybe my reason for not liking it as much as I would have is because I finished the second book of Stephanie Perkins' Anna and The French Kiss trilogy around the time I started this book. And I greatly enjoy said trilogy. But if you want to read something simple, cute, fluffy, and a little cliche I would definitely recommend this.
I'm positive though that I will be re-reading this when I see it in stores.

This was an okay story, but it took me a while to get into it.
Brooklyn was an okay character, and I did feel quite sorry for her with the things that happened to her at the school. Her initial roommate wasn't very nice to her, and the headmistress was so weird.
The storyline in this was okay, although I was surprised at how many boys there were around considering that it was an all-girls school. There were a couple of sweet romantic moments, although one of the love interests seemed a bit risky! The ending was okay, and I was glad that things were looking up for Brooklyn. Overall; okay boarding school story, 6 out of 10
I enjoyed this book for the most part. I know some people complained that not much happened. To me that's okay. You don't always need drama and non sense going on. I liked most of the characters which was nice. The only thing was that Brooklyn kept meeting guys that she found cute and comes to find out that they were unavailable. Normally that wouldn't bother me. However, why would the guys flirt with her knowing they were off limits? I did like how at the end of the book the girls got even with the boys. Even though what the guys did was weird and childish.
