After reading a clean fiction retelling of the Wild Swans late last year, I was actually pretty excited for reading this one to see another author’s version of the tale. Like with the other one, this one has a fiercely loyal sibling set and that’s definitely want is making this retelling stand out to me.

I did feel like I was missing some background and context at the beginning of the book, like maybe Gwyn was a side character run a previous book by this author. I don’t see that anywhere, but maybe we’ll see more information in the bonus novella collection that will be collected to this series that is releasing next month.

Like with the some other books in this series, I do think this book could have been a bit longer there at the end, but I was overall invested in this story and really liked how the faith content played into the plotline. I’ve had other books by this author on my TBR and I’m more excited to read them now after finding this writing style to be easy and smooth to read.

This book is AMAZING! I loved every part it and the twist that Carlin took with the Wild Swan Retelling was amazing!

Characters:
Varrick was the sweetest older brother! I loved his determination to push through and save his younger brothers and protect his sister. I loved him! He was so selfless!
Gwyn...poor thing, I hurt for her, and I loved her, and I just wanted her to know she could trust Varrick!
Elissy was cute! Adorable little sister and I loved her!
Also, Cage... I want more of him. Honestly, I'd be totally cool with novellas of every one of Varrivk's brothers! Please, Madi! PLEASE!

Themes:
That God is our strength when we have known. Our strength in difficult situations and that He sees everything that happens in our life.

Language:
N/A

Romance:
A slow burn romance that is adorable!

Magic:
N/A

Violence/Gore:
Fight scenes, landslides, poisoning, mentions of escaping death, and someone's throat being slit. Mentions of the sticky feel of blood but all handled tastefully.

Overall:
I loved this Wild Swans Retelling! It was amazing! The poison aspect was...*chef's kiss* the execution, the delivery, loved this book so much!
Carlin never disappoints!

Another wonderful novel in the Cornerstone series.
This fairytale retelling was so well done and I really appreciated the creative twist to make this a believable non magical retelling while still maintaining the elements of the original story. 🦢
For the characters.
Verrick, I loved how fiercely protective he is over his siblings and how responsible he is. 🤴🏻
Gwyn the poor dear she was so brave and courageous despite her broken past. 🥹
Elissy was so adorable. The little sister that her troupe of brothers would do anything to protect. 😊
Cage was simply marvellous. I definitely wouldn’t complain if Maddi gave him his very own book. 👀 The Adventures of a Snarky Spy 😂
Then in general I loved the sibling dynamics. The brothers all with their own fantastic personalities that honestly could all deserve their own books as well.

Themes of God’s faithfulness and that He never fails shine all throughout this book. Along with the importance of loyalty, honour, and truth.

(Content: No language. The sweetest slow burn romance. Nonmagical. A few fighting scenes, nightmares, poisoning, imprisonment/mistreatment, and natural disasters. Reading age: 13+)

Read my review on my blog: https://penspagesandpulses.wordpress....

THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew it was going to be amazing, but *ALL THE SQUEALS* VARRICK AND GWYN ARE SO ADORABLE AND I LOVES THEM AND I NEEDS MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fine, I'll try to quit squealing about this book and write a real review. But seriously, it deserves ALL THE SQUEALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Varrick is a protective big brother who won't let a little poison stop him from saving his family and those he cares about, and he's overall a big sweetheart in need of hugs. His determination is so endearing! I love how he is willing to put the needs of others before his own. Even though he's physically fairly weak throughout most of the book, he still has such a strength of character and strength of will that he was still an impressive character. Most writers couldn't write a physically weak MMC well, but apparently Madisyn Carlin can. I'm still wondering what Madi can't write well.

Gwyn is hiding from her past. She's seen too much, but still has a big heart. She also needs hugs. I think she and Varrick are in a competition to see which of them needs hugs more. Anyway, I love Gwyn's willingness to help Varrick's family, even if it means risking -- or even sacrificing -- her own safety. She has a good heart and wants to do what's right at all times.

Elissy, Varrick's baby sister, is so fun. I love her sweet nature and how she's able to charm everyone into loving her. Well, almost everybody; the villains are too nasty for that. She was perfectly written as a baby sister. Again, I have no idea how Madisyn writes sisters SO WELL!!!!!!!!!!!! It's incredible.

This book put me through quite the roller coaster of emotions. I laughed. I cried. I squealed. I demanded more books with these characters. This is what a book is supposed to do to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the second (I think?) Wild Swans retelling I've read, and Madisyn did it so well!!!!!! I had no clue how she'd pull of a nonmagical version of this story, but WOW!!!!!! She did such a great job. I loved how she twisted the fairy tale to make it her own original story.

My biggest complaint with this book is I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!! I NEED A BOOK WITH EACH OF VARRICK'S SIBLINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that won't be happening soon enough.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE:

“You listen to me, Gwyn Yesen. You are not a nobody. You are not a no one. You are my sister’s friend. My land’s ally. You are the woman who risked it all for near strangers who could have ordered your death had they known the truth. You are my Gwyn. The Gwyn whose smiles I’d like to see more of. The Gwyn who deserves safety and protection and freedom.”

Overall, *squeals* I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need my physical copy to arrive already so I can reread it AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you love Christian fantasy fairy tale retellings, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I received an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required and was voluntarily given.

5+ stars (6/10 hearts). I've never read the White Swan fairytale, but I glanced over the wikipedia summary recently while planning my own retelling and fell in love with the story, so this book was very exciting. I had such fun picking up on all the retold elements, and as a rule they were so cleverly done! I also love how Madisyn Carlin pulled out the tale's original themes, such as loyalty, and how they became central themes of this story. Also, Gwyn & Varrick are the cutest couple. This book was a little less snarkily humorous as the author's books usually are but it suited the story well and I throughly enjoyed the entire experience. Also, that cover is to DIE for!

Fantasy level: 1/5 (low)—an imaginary country.

Madisyn Carlin's books always include faith, humor, action, and a sweet romance. A Noble Protector is no exception and is an entertaining, quick read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction, non-magical fantasy, fairy-tale retellings, and novellas.

The best Will Swans Yet

Hands down, this book deserves a spot in best Wild Swans retelling. With a creative, non magical imaging of the story and characters that absolutely capture you, this story brings tears and smiles and an ending that is every bit as moving as the entire book was. Definitely recommend!

I cannot express how much I loved this story! It was so good!! I've read Wild Swan retellings before, but none of them have come close to being this good.
My favorite things were the male MC and his brothers. I love reading about brothers in books and seeing their relationships, and there is always that one brother who is willing to give it all for them.
I loved the whole backstory, and it was all connected.

What a beautiful retelling!

Ms. Carlin definitely exercised her gift of writing to craft this story, and without an ounce of magic mentioned! Though it is a fairy tale retelling, the crafted world is magicless but not weak. The plot is extremely well developed, the style is as always very engaging, and the story of loyalty and love in the midst of betrayal and evil is a delight to read. Be prepared for strong emotions, deep issues, and clean romance.
And of course, as one trusts to find in all novels by Ms. Carlin, the faith in the Highest takes a role, as well. It becomes the strength for Gwyn and Varrick, and it is their faith that’s tested, as they learn to open their hearts and trust God’s goodness. And as the story unfolds, you wonder who the true protector in life is.

Possible triggers: death of parents , torture, sufferings, violence described but not in gruesome detail.

It was truly a joy to read an advanced copy I was given. My review is my own opinion, but if you’re like me, you’ll devour this novella in a day!

I love this sweet story so much! If I could have Varrick for a big brother, I would, and if I already didn't love Ellie as my nickname, I would choose Elissy!

A Noble Protector encouraged me that we each have a choice to keep trusting in the Highest's strength, but when we do, He proves He is more than enough! It was a truth I so needed to hear!

A Noble Protector perfectly fulfilled and superceded my hopes for a Wild Swans Retelling, and I think it will for you as well! I recommend it 100%!

My Review: 5 out of 5 Stars

First of all, that cover is gorgeous. I love all the shades of blue! (I know I talk about a book's cover almost every time I review something, but it's very important to me)

Characters: I love Varrick. I tend to love any male main character in Madisyn's stories, but I do really love Varrick. Poor guy, though. He went through quite a bit. Elissy is also very sweet (I love that her nickname is Issy!), and Gwyn! Gwyn is lovely - not just because of her name, but her name is gorgeous, too. Varrick's brothers were also fun and interesting. Jude, especially. Is it too much to say he needs his own story? The villains were hideous and deserved to be smacked (and more, but you know what I mean).

Plot/Writing Style: As always, Madisyn has a great writing style, and the plot was well done! I loved the high stakes, humor, and sweet sibling interactions (Varrick is the best brother!).

Romance: Squeaky clean and sweet. Nothing more than hugs and non-descriptive kissing.

Violence: Characters are poisoned, injured, hurt, etc etc. There is nothing too graphic that you will be left squeaming.

Biblical Themes: Characters pray to the "Highest" and talk about Him. I particularly liked the mentions of God never leaving or abandoning us. It's a great message to be reminded of, and I definitely needed to hear it.

Overall, I really enjoyed "A Noble Protector"! If you are a fan of Christian fantasy retellings with action, clean romance, and witty humor, then this is a book for you!

A Favorite Quote:
“It is not cute. I fell asleep on your brother’s shoulder. He’s the crown prince!” And good heavens, had she drooled?

*How is it May already & I haven’t read a Madisyn Carlin book yet this year? Well I’ve finally rectified that…*

What a beautiful story!
I have not read the Wild Swans yet, but now I’ll probably have to if it’s this good.

I absolutely loved the Landreth family dynamic. You don’t hear of too many royal families being that big. Even without the late queen, she certainly lived on in all of them. Varrick & Elissy were great fun with their oldest & only sister roles.
Gwyn was a dear with all of the hardships she endured & yet let her guard down just enough to join them. Thank goodness she did!

The trust issues & health obstacles our leads faced were so very real & the author put so much care into bringing these wounded characters together.

What diabolical enemies though! I haven’t had the pleasure of a “Madi-baddie” for a while! Hahaha I forgot how cruel they can be! Those were some conniving villains considering what they accomplished too.

I also loved the theme verse of A Noble Comfort. *Psalm 73:26 has been very fitting for me today when my flesh too has been failing me.*

Oh. My heart... This book was beautiful. Heart-wrenching, but so beautiful. I don't know the original fairytale, but I loved what the author did with it. It was so unique and different. The family love and loyalty that shone all through it was absolutely beautiful. Watching Varrick struggle through his own worsening health issues to try to protect his brothers and sister was heartbreaking and lovely all at once. And Gwyn. With how closed off she was, I shouldn't have loved her, but I did. Her hurt ran so deep, and yet when it came down to it, she couldn't help helping, as much as she wanted to. I just loved all of it. (Except the villains, of course. *shudders*) Definitely my favorite of the collection so far!

Content:

Profanity: None.

Violence: Low moderate. There is a lot of violence in this, but thankfully the author doesn't go graphic. There are scars from past wounds, stabbing, landslides, dead bodies mentioned but not dwelt upon, poisoning, torture (mostly heard and not seen) including beatings, use of hooked needles mentioned, broken bones, lots of bruises, and constant peril and threat of death.

Sexual: Mild. Barely there. forehead kiss, and one chaste kiss barely described. Hugs.

Triggers: Betrayal is huge in this, as well as frame jobs. This is Christian fiction, so religion is also present as a big theme of how everything is coped with throughout the novel.

Okay, I gotta wonder if the author had a wheel she spun every chapter to see what trauma she could inflict on her characters in it. They went through it! I was grimacing wondering if their trials would ever end!

This was a clever, clever iteration of the Wild Swans Fairy Tale. I enjoyed how she was able to fit all the main points of the fairy tale into the story without magic present. Having the brothers I love it when an author can make it fit the fairy tale, but it also is 100% believable for the world and plot that is new to the reader.

Varrick being the Noble Protector, was spot on. The guy was such a sweetheart. In fact, I think the only flaw he had was being too self-sacrificing. I wish he'd had more character growth, but his whole arc was 'save the family at all costs' with a dash of first love thrown in for good measure.

Gwyn also didn't have too much of a growth arc, but more than Varrick. She had to choose to do the right thing at the risk of her own well-being and life. The more she cared the harder it was to watch the things that happened to her. The ending had me riveted on what was going to happen to her (even though I knew it would all be okay) I was distressed at her prolonged trauma.

I kept wondering at Brooklyn, her brother (name escapes me), and Henderson the three villains of the story. They don't get much of a look-in in regards to motivation. It's stereotypical, and evil, sure, but I wanted to know why the heck they were such murdering psychos. Power is all well and good as an evil motive, but there had to be more to it than that.

The romance aspect was more tell than show. The characters are together a great deal, and see each other's personality, and then in internal thought they both come to realize they are falling/could fall for each other. It's abrupt, and frankly not very satisfying. It's sweet, but the whole plot is more centered on "survive or die" than the little side romance.

The religious aspect was nice. It wasn't too preachy, and it tackled some questions about why God lets us go through things, and how faith works, and how He saves us even when we'd rather not have been in a position to need saving. The constant mantra of the family was for God to be their strength. It was an inspiring story to see how they all clung to God even as they were

The tone of the book was pretty emotionally intense, but I did enjoy it and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I'm quite pleased to report a happy ending. They sure earned it.

This book was absolutely amazing and a new take on a wonderful fairy tale! I have read a few Wild Swans retellings in the last year and I honestly loved most of them, but I have never read a version that wasn’t from the cursed (Mini spoiler: ) brothers sister’s POV.
And I definitely loved this twist in the story!

I am currently reading through Madisyn’s backlist and loved every one of her books and characters, but I think Gwyn and Varrick are one of my favorite couples. At least in the top 3.. It’s hard to decide, really. ;) So let’s just say I loved them a lot!

Varrick is so sweet and despite his own dire situation determined to save his younger brothers. While his health is weakened to near death, his character is strong as can be. He is protective and selfless and overall a wonderful character and my only complaint is that he deserves a full length novel. I just wanted to read more about him and Gwyn!
You can not read this book and not feel for poor Gwyn. But despite her broken past she is brave and willing to sacrifice her own freedom and (relative) security for the ones she loves and for what is right.
And not to forget Elissy, the character that usually gets all the attention in Wild Swans retellings. She was absolutely adorable and I would definitely read a book with her as the FMC, but I’m still happy Madisyn took another route. I also just love well written sibling-relationships and Madisyn definitely did the original justice!

The faith content is strong as it has been in every book I have read by the author. God is always just and never fails, even if we don’t see it in this broken world. The characters gladly see it, since this is a HEA kind of book. I do prefer books with this sort of ending and while Carlin’s books always deliver just that and are full of hope despite awful circumstances, she never shies away from hard topics and ugly truths.
That’s why it’s easy to relate to her characters even though most of her stories definitely give the fairy tale feeling we all long for.

A Noble Protector is a beautiful addition to the Cornerstone series and one you shouldn’t miss if you enjoy Christian fairy tale retellings!

A Noble Protector
Cornerstone #8
By Madisyn Carlin

Varrick Landreth, along with his brothers and sister, has been betrayed. He is dying and left to do so in utter agony. When his sister seeks out an outcast young woman for aid, Varrick is anything but pleased. He is the family's protector and he doesn't know this stranger who could endanger Elissy.

But this stranger in the Dead Woods has sought this refuge after being betrayed and left for dead. Gwen Yesen fears what offering her aid will mean if she is seen. Those who sought her death will never be satisfied until she meets the fate of her parents. But Gwen is the only one who can help Varrick and his brothers find the cure they seek.

A Noble Protector is a non-magical retelling of the Wild Swans. I loved how various elements of the original fairytale were reworked to remain in the story but in an entirely plausible real-world way. The betrayal that both Varrick and Gwen faced is seen after the fact, but the repercussions are far-reaching and guide the actions of both throughout this original retelling.

I highly recommend this book for tweens and up. It is well-written and offers a wide range of feelings—despair, fear, hope, determination, love, and so much more. This book does have moments of violence but nothing graphic, just enough to set the mood for the utter hopelessness of their situation before hope is offered. There is a definite faith element running throughout that gives hope during the darkest moments and which is appreciated.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations, but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This was an incredible book with so much faith-filled content. I loved how Gwyn, a new believer, needed to learn how to rely on God despite everything she endured, and I love how she fell in love with a strong believer who sees her and accepts her for who she is. The plot was incredibly well-crafted and really created an interesting spin on the Wild Swans as this was a non-magical fairy tale retelling. I love how the brothers turning to swans were so seamlessly incorporated into the book.
My only issue with this book (and the only reason why I didn't rate this book as five stars) is because it was too fast-paced and high risk for me. I don't like books where the main characters don't get a chance to catch their breath and one thing after another is thrown at them. If other people like this kind of thing, then this is definitely a book for you! The book was amazing but I don't think I'll read again. It was a great first time read though.
Well done, Madisyn!

A Noble Protector by Madisyn Carlin
What I enjoyed about this book:
💛 An outcast princess
💛 The kingdom's last hope
💛 Hidden identities
💛 Family
💛 Sweet and clean romance
This story is quite a bit darker than the others I've read in the series! It's a retelling of the Wild Swans which I found pretty unique. The six princes are dying slow and agonizing deaths from poisoning (the Swan Death) and all the characters spend a lot of time in dungeons. Fortunately for me there is a thin sliver of hope throughout as the characters trust in God and there is a happily ever after!
A standalone in the Cornerstone series, a multi author series of Christian nonmagical fairytale retellings
Favorite quote: "She had a princess to protect, princes to save, and her own identity to conceal."
Favorite scene: the ending
Favorite character: Varrick, our main male character, the eldest poisoned prince

I loved this book A LOT! One of my favourite in the Cornerstone series so far! I love how all of Madisyn's books focus a lot on the faith aspect, although I do wish that there had been a little bit more romance and sweet moments between Varrick and Gwyn. This was a really interesting retelling of the Wild Swans. Obviously, the Cornerstone series is a non-magic series so it was really interesting to see how Madisyn retold the Wild Swans without using any magic. I loved all the elements and all the hints to the story that Madisyn incorporated in there and I loved all the action, the plot, the characters. I loved Varrick's protectiveness towards his younger siblings and his and his younger siblings' loyalty to each other and their country. Elissy was also such a great character, willing to go to such great lengths for her brothers. Overall, this was an awesome book and I loved it so much!

I love how all the different fairytale elements were drawn into the story!! It's an especial challenge with this story, in particular, where magic features so prominently, to make it work without magic. But it worked!

Love the character relationships, the worldbuilding, the suspense of the plot... and am, quite frankly, wanting to write my own twist on this story, now.

It was a God-glorifying book in both clear statements of His character, and in the quality of work; the art was not sacrificed for the message, nor was the story unrecognizable. I liked this one a lot (but I may be a wee bit biased, since I love this author's other retellings.)

While I've read retellings of Wild Swans, I had to look up the actual story. I feel like this one hit it on the nose with still keeping enough variety to make it fun. I especially liked the addition of Gwyn and her story.
As this is part of the Cornerstone series, it has some strong faith elements but I enjoyed that the overall theme was faith giving strength and that everyone matters.
This story is a little slower moving than some other fairytale retellings I've read, but that makes it fun for a winter's day as you let the heroes go on the quests from the comfort and warmth of your home.

Interesting Non-magic Wild Swans

I liked how the author handled the magical aspects of the original in this non-magical retelling of the Wild Swans. It was very engaging and offered additional intrigue.

The characters were generally likable, if stubborn, and the end seemed more convoluted than necessary, but this was still a satisfying read. The kindle version has some annoying typos in the back half of the book though.

A beautiful Wild Swans retelling.

I loved how clearly each fairytale element came out in the story, yet it was so unique and fresh. The pacing was also really fun and just fast-paced enough for its short length.

Definitely would recommend!
