“Nobody escapes the Supermax. If you go in, you’re never coming out.”The Jaeger squad has finally tracked down Griff’s kidnapped daughter. The problem? She’s locked away in the deadliest dungeon in the wasteland—the Supermax. A magical prison for the mobs and Incants too dangerous to go free, but too valuable to kill off. None of the magical prisoners who have disappeared into the dungeon turned prison have ever been heard from again, but the Jaeger squad is looking to be the first. It’s time for a jailbreak in the IZ. But the Supermax is hiding a deep, dark secret. One that just might get the Jaegers killed. Or worse. Turns out the biggest threat in the wasteland isn’t a monster. Monsters just want to kill you and loot your corpse. The puppet masters pulling the strings at the Supermax, on the other hand, are after your very soul…
James Hunter is a full-time ink slinger, a member of SFWA, and the bestselling author of Vigil Bound, Rogue Dungeon, Shadowcroft Academy, Bibliomancer (The Completionist Chronicles Expanded Universe), and the litRPG epic Viridian Gate Online! In addition to writing, James also runs Shadow Alley Press, an industry leader that specializes in publishing LitRPG, Fantasy, and selection Science Fiction.
James is a former Marine Corps Sergeant, combat veteran, and pirate hunter (seriously). He’s also a member of The Royal Order of the Shellback—’cause that’s totally a real thing. And a spaceship captain, can’t forget that. Okay … the last one probably isn’t true. When not writing or spending time with family, James occasionally finds time to eat and sleep.
The Jaeger squad have found out where Ella, Griff's daughter is being kept and she is in the prison known as the supermax and they have decided to go and get her out. However the supermax is run by the warden and is heavily guarded by all kinds of creatures so it was no joke planning a get in and get out grab. They did plan however they were caught out immediately and had to reformulate further plans if Clay and Griff where ever to get out of the prison alive. It was up to Alex and Joe to see to this and Joe intended filming the whole debacle. Turns out that the government and the pharmaceutical companies were behind some very unusual scientific experimentation going on in the prison, and others who people trusted turned out to be traitors to the men in the street. The squad managed to turn a lot of attention on them and turned some powerful people into enemies. These vowed they would hunt them down but the squad just dared them to do so. Bring it on! It's excitement all the way in the wastelands and I cannot wait to read book 6.
The antics continue with our team of heroes. I do appreciate how this series is filled with stories, like a mini-series of events, that make it easy to digest in bite-size chunks of dysfunction. The character development arcs hit a plateau in the last entry due to each of the main characters reaching a specific level of skill and looking for something to do with it. This book focuses on other aspects aside from leveling up and progression in a traditional RPG sense by adding backstory and layers to the depth of the character that we had yet to learn much about other than what had happened with our hearoes directly. This was a good avenue to take and I look forward to the next entry in the series.
Incants and wasteland creatures are being sold. Clay isn’t sure what they are doing the prisoners, but it can’t be anything good. Worse still, one of those prisoners is Griff’s daughter. It’s time for a jail break!
You have to love a good jail break story! This one starts out right at the start of the plan to rescue Griff’s daughter. It introduces some fun new characters as well. The book was rather short at just under 3 hours long, but all six of the books are included with the Audible subscription. Well worth the listen. Travis Baldree does an amazing job with the narration.
Boy this husband and wife team don't waste any time getting right to the story. When Alex, Cody and Joe discovered where Griff's daughter was being held in bk4, they jumped into the next quest to rescue his daughter! It didn't matter that she was held in a high security penitentiary that no one had ever able to breach! So with the help of Bacon Bits they were determined to do it! You’ll definitely want to grab this highly intoxicating pedal-to-the-metal action-driven story! And btw you should let Travis Baldree tell you this story!
I love these books and this series. The narrator is one of the best so that definitely makes it easy to fly through them with delight. However, the story and characters are what make it so much fun and keep the interest going. I would give the series 5 stars because it feels that enjoyable but it’s not at the same tier or level of writing and story creation as say Dungeon Crawler Carl series. (Makes me wish we could do a 10 star system) That said I will absolutely continue on to number 6!
Huh, still trying to figure out this bigger novella format. I mean, the book is awesome with good twists, some OPness, decent character development, and all around redneck hoohaw. So...I guess this is a good format then?mit certainly keeps it to the point. I guess I'll find out since I certainly love the series so far!
Another fun entry. I am really enjoying these short story adventures. There are some really funny references throughout the book. The world building is really good and it is a crazy world that is being built.
It's a fast, fun, and funny story about the characters we've been following kicking some ass that deserves it. Is there anything more that needs saying? It's not Tolstoy, but that wasn't what you were looking for, was it?
Book five of the Wasteland Warlords saga continues the impressive expansion of the world, maintaining the high-bar quality established in the previous volume. After the five-star high of book four, this installment serves as a sophisticated deepening of the lore and a sprawling tactical expansion. James Hunter is no longer just writing about survival; he is writing about the birth of a new civilization, and the growing pains are as violent as they are fascinating.
The most impressive element of this fifth book is the way Hunter manages the "empire-building" aspect of the story. The scale has become truly massive, with multiple factions, complex supply lines, and shifting alliances that require the protagonist to be a diplomat just as often as a warrior. The influence of Hunter's LitRPG background is subtle but effective here; you can feel the "leveling up" of the entire faction as they reclaim technology and territory. The action remains top-tier, featuring some of the most creative and large-scale vehicular combat sequences in the series, but it’s the strategic chess match between leaders that provides the real tension.
The character dynamics have matured significantly. We see the toll that constant warfare and high-level leadership take on the core cast. The relationships are no longer just about who has your back in a fight; they are about shared visions for the future and the differing philosophies on how to govern a lawless land. There is a sense of "pre-apocalyptic" mystery beginning to unravel as well, providing a tantalizing look at how the world fell and what might be left to save. It’s a darker, more cerebral tone that balances out the high-octane raids perfectly.
The four-star rating is a result of the sheer density of the political maneuvering. Because the scope has grown so wide, the narrative occasionally spends a bit more time in the "war room" than on the front lines, which might feel like a slight shift for those who prefer the raw, singular focus of the earlier books. However, for readers who appreciate seeing a world truly evolve and change based on the protagonist's actions, this is an incredibly rewarding read. It’s a bold, heavy-hitting entry that sets the stage for what promises to be an earth-shattering conclusion to the saga
