When Peggy tells her parents that there is a crocodile under her bed, they don't believe her, rushing out for their dinner date. Henry the crocodile is very real though, and the two spend a happy evening together, taking a bath, playing games, and making a toy crocodile out of egg cartoons. Henry lulls Peggy to sleep by telling her his history: how he was a mischievous young crocodile who was banished to the human world because he played one prank too many, and how he will only be allowed back when he help 1000 human children...

Originally published in the Netherlands in 1980 as Er ligt een krokodil onder mijn bed!, this was husband-and-wife team Ingrid and Dieter Schubert's first picture-book. A German couple who live and published in the Netherlands, they have created many books together, and have apparently created two versions of There's a Crocodile Under My Bed!. The one I read, which appears to be the original, has fairly muted illustrations, and features characters named Peggy and Henry. The newer edition, issued in 2014 (2015 in English) seems to have more colorful artwork, and characters named Sophie and Carl. I'll have to see if I can track down a copy of the later version, to see if there are more significant differences. Leaving that aside, I enjoyed the story here, which offers a reassuring and playful take on the classic childhood fear of bogies under the bed. Mercer Mayer's There's an Alligator under My Bed would be a classic American example, but I am glad to have encountered this Dutch/German one as well. Recommended to anyone seeking reassuring bedtime tales for the picture-book set.

Like Mercer Mayer's take on this better. Maybe this is just suffering from translation flaws? Anyway, the main character, Sophie, was very irritating by the end what with her bossiness and her VERY sudden and quite unbelievable transformation in the beginning.

In krachtige, sobere prenten vertellen ze het verhaal dat - minstens voor de komende vijfendertig jaar - de jonge lezers vol vertrouwen naar bed zal laten gaan.

When Sophie discovers Carl, a crocodile, under her bed, she isn't scared a bit. Carl is a little nervous, though, and Sophie works hard to reassure him. They perform tricks, cook, eat, make crafts, and even bathe before he slips away. Young readers will find themselves reassured about their fears, especially of the night and what might be under the bed, through this book, updated from the original version, published a couple of decades ago. I liked how the illustrator used shadows in many of the illustrations as well as how Carl puts Sophie to sleep by recounting stories of his adventures. Even our worst fears can be tamed with a little tender, loving care and patience.

This is a cute story about the crocodile being afraid of the kid instead of the other way around. Reads like a shorter version of the If you give a Mouse books.

This could be a cute book to read to those worried about things under the bed...there is a crocodile under the bed but Sophie isn't scared at all and the crocodile is "tame as a dog" (and knows more tricks than most dogs). He's a bit of a prankster but he doesn't prank Sophie and they have a fun night together.

I like that there's an embedded craft idea with simple illustrated instructions on one of the pages (an activity the characters do together) and it upcycles old egg cartons for it!

This story fell so flat. I don’t even see the point. The Mercer Meyer story was much better. I’m very disappointed because I love Ingrid Schubert’s stories.

Ophelia and The Umbrella are two of my favorite books.

Deze opnieuw uitgebrachte klassieker gaat over Lotje die krokodil Karel onder haar bed vindt en er achter komt dat ze helemaal niet bang voor hem is.

Vervolgens gaat ze hem kunstjes leren, bakken ze samen wel duizend pannenkoeken en maken ze een krokodil van eierdozen. Het is een leuk prentenboek met een heel ondeugende krokodil en een stoer meisje in de hoofdrollen. Het is in 1980 voor het eerst verschenen, vorig jaar kwam er een nieuwe versie van het boek uit.

Misschien dat de vorige editie interessanter was, of dat ik gewoon gewend ben aan leukere kinder/prentenboeken, maar deze mist gewoon datgene dat zo'n boek leuk maakt. De humor is te subtiel, het verhaal te eenvoudig (serieus, hoe komt die krokodil eigenlijk onder dat bed en waar kwam hij vandaan?), er zit geen opbouw in het boek en ik kan drie andere boeken aanwijzen die ook gaan over het overwinnen van angst en die leuker zijn voor kinderen.

I read the one with the original illustrations, which looked sort of like crayon. My artistic son was impressed by the style. I love the poses the crocodile strikes in the endpapers. The story is fine, but I prefer Princess Cora and the Crocodile and the movie "Monsters Inc."
