An unusual LitRPG that seems like it shouldn't work, but whose weird premise makes it feel unpredictable and interesting. A cyborg warrior named NSLICE-00P from an dimension of comic book heroes finds herself transported to a pre-industrial fantasy world with elaborate dungeon mechanics, and spells and monsters and such. She attempts to follow her programming to locate someone who may not even exist in this world. She begins systematically clearing dungeons, one thing becomes clear. NSLICE-00P is OP, as in over-powered.

The first six hours of this audiobook finds her collecting two small monster bosses from cleared dungeons and making them her minions, together they try to explain the rules of the world and her own stats and relation to it. But it becomes clear that her machine gun arms and rocket boosters annihilate pretty much anything. Characters are constantly confused by her ability to accomplish things that should be WAY out of her level's abilities; and virtually every enemy she encounters is about to meet an abrupt death. She doesn't even spend any of her perk points until almost half the book in.

Only seven hours into the sixteen hour audiobook, do we start to get other characters. A pair of wannabe-adventurers recognize that she might be able to help. Slowly, a story forms (sort of), introducing a villain, that leads to a big set piece conclusion. The protagonist is a computer with almost no personality, the book barely has any characters until the second half. The stakes are low, we don't really know who she's looking for. It shouldn't work. But when the rest of the world trembles in confusion as a low level metal knight blasts through the deadliest monsters with excessive ease, it's oddly charming.

I have about four hours left in this audiobook and I really wish I was reading this instead of listening to it. Every once in awhile it tells you level up information and instead of listening to it list, I would have preferred to read it and see what that looks like on paper. This is a very interesting story though. I like the idea of someone from another world going to a Dungeon mastering type of place and having to adjust. The cyborg has a learning curve and the creatures and people around her are teaching her about the world while she dominates with her over leveled mechanic parts.
Because I listened to this on audio, it felt longer than it needed to be because there were repeats: mostly the updates to NSlice 00Ps stats. I did like this story format a lot. I liked that they were trying to figure out how she fit in the world and she tried to adjust.

Despite being an undiluted power fantasy, I enjoyed this book. Given the near-total lack of personality in the protagonist, the reader must inhabit the support characters to get the normal experience. I do like how Nslice-00P's use of cybernetics and an integrated A.I. subverts the (genre standard) magic system.

It's a pity that she didn't fully realize the nature of her Isekai journey. Even in the end, she's still searching for the authorities that sent her on the mission. I was hoping to watch her struggle to discover a replacement purpose, once the original mission is discarded.

Cyber Mage: Uprising in a World of Magic

Introduction

Icalos's Arrival is a refreshing and innovative entry in the LitRPG and Isekai genres, blending elements of science fiction and fantasy to create a narrative that is both humorous and engaging. As the first installment in the Terminate the Other World! series, this novel sets itself apart from its contemporaries through its unique protagonist and clever subversion of genre tropes.

Plot and Premise

The story follows NSLICE-00P, a cyborg originally designed for military operations, who finds herself transported to a magical world after a mission goes awry. This premise immediately sets Arrival apart from typical Isekai narratives, which often feature human protagonists. NSLICE-00P must navigate this new environment, leveraging her cybernetic enhancements and integrated AI to interact with and often subvert the traditional magic system of the fantasy world.

This setup allows Icalos to explore familiar Isekai themes through a fresh lens. The fish-out-of-water scenario is amplified by the protagonist's robotic nature, creating opportunities for both humor and thoughtful exploration of what it means to be human in a world governed by magical rather than technological rules.

Characters and Development

NSLICE-00P is an intriguing take on the overpowered protagonist trope common in Isekai stories. Her cyborg nature and initial lack of personality create a unique challenge for readers, requiring them to engage more deeply with the supporting characters to experience the full emotional spectrum of the story. This approach risks alienating some readers but ultimately pays off by allowing for significant character growth throughout the narrative.

The supporting cast, particularly NSLICE-00P's "loyal yet terrified minions," adds depth and additional humor to the story. These characters serve as effective foils to the protagonist, highlighting her inhuman nature while also providing opportunities for her to develop more human-like traits and relationships.

Writing Style and Narrative Approach

Icalos employs an accessible and engaging writing style that prioritizes humor and action. The author skillfully balances the need to introduce readers to the complex world and its mechanics with maintaining a brisk narrative pace. This is achieved through a gradual unveiling of the world's rules and systems, avoiding the information dumps that can bog down some LitRPG novels.

The humor in Arrival is a standout feature, often stemming from NSLICE-00P's literal interpretation of her surroundings and her interactions with the world's inhabitants. This comedic approach helps to lighten what could otherwise be a potentially dark or overwhelming narrative, given the protagonist's military background and the challenges of adapting to an entirely new world.

LitRPG Elements

As a LitRPG novel, Arrival incorporates game-like elements into its narrative structure. The frequent updates to NSLICE-00P's stats are a core part of this, though some readers have noted that these can become repetitive, especially in the audiobook format. However, the integration of these elements generally serves the story well, providing a tangible sense of progression and allowing readers to track the protagonist's growth in concrete terms.

Themes and Philosophical Exploration

Arrival explores several compelling themes:

Identity and Humanity: Through NSLICE-00P's journey, the novel examines what it means to be human and how identity is shaped by experiences and interactions.
Adaptation and Survival: The story highlights the challenges and opportunities presented by radical changes in one's environment.
Technology vs. Magic: By pitting a technologically advanced protagonist against a world governed by magic, the novel explores the relationship and potential conflicts between these two forces.
Power and Responsibility: As an overpowered character, NSLICE-00P's actions and decisions raise questions about the use and consequences of great power.

Comparison with Contemporaries

Arrival distinguishes itself within the crowded LitRPG and Isekai genres through its unique blend of science fiction and fantasy elements. While it shares some common tropes with other works in the genre, such as the overpowered protagonist and the "transported to another world" premise, its execution sets it apart.

Compared to classic science fiction works like The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick or The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, Arrival takes a lighter, more humorous approach to exploring themes of identity and cultural clash. However, like these works, it uses its speculative elements to comment on human nature and societal structures.

Within the LitRPG genre, Arrival has been favorably compared to other comedic titles like This Quest is Broken and The Godking's Legacy. Its humor and character development are particularly noted as strengths, placing it among the more entertaining entries in the genre.

Audiobook Performance

The audiobook version of Arrival, narrated by Savy Des-Etages, has received particular praise. The narration is credited with enhancing the story's comedic elements and bringing the characters to life. Des-Etages's performance adds personality to the otherwise robotic protagonist, making the audiobook a recommended format for experiencing the story.

Conclusion

Arrival (Terminate the Other World! #1)
by Icalos offers a fresh and entertaining take on the Isekai and LitRPG genres. Its unique protagonist, clever blend of science fiction and fantasy elements, and well-executed humor make it stand out in a crowded field. While it may not reach the philosophical depths of some classic science fiction works, it succeeds in providing an engaging, thought-provoking, and often hilarious reading experience.

For readers seeking a LitRPG adventure that breaks from the usual mold, Arrival delivers a compelling mix of action, humor, and character development. Icalos has crafted a world and protagonist that challenge genre conventions while still delivering the progression and world-building that fans of LitRPG and Isekai crave. Whether in print or audio format, Arrival is a standout entry in the genre and a promising start to the Terminate the Other World! series.

Might be a little Bias as I listened to the audible book instead of read but this was probably in my top 3 comedic LITRPG genre books. Right up there with This Quest is Broken and The Godking's Legacy. What those books and this do rather well is have a comedic influence while having a series plot and story as well as world building or back ground around it. Unlike some others where the story itself is silly and pointless leaving the reader with nothing to get invested in beyond the comedic parts.

Now I've seen others claim that since the MC is so 'robotic' one needs to rely on the other characters for personality which is where my Bias comes in, because the Narrator of this book in audible format is rather amazing in making the even the Main characters robotic like statements stand out with personality. Honestly, I might even got annoyed if I 'read' some of the side characters or Main and had my own voice compared to the narrators. Her delivery of some of the High King of all the Lands swift turn of views at times, was just gold. Yes yes.

If the narrator wasn't so bloody amazing, I admit I'd go to read the second book right now instead of waiting that I enjoyed the book itself so much. However I feel the the audible format gave this type of series just something extra that will make it worth the wait unlike other titles that might be good enough to switch without much loss of enjoyment.

So anyone on the fence about this series, I'd suggest if you want that little push to make a good book into a 'great' book to get the audio version instead of read it directly. Either way though it is still a enjoyable story.

My only 'qualm' was that the MC due to her personality only does what is need when needed, so instead of exploring every magic type and fusion, replacing elemental codes in the spells for one element for another to unlock all the spells she can, that she didn't. From a 'character' perspective it makes sense for how she thinks but for a reader even knowing how boring it would be if she unlocked everything at once. It was still disappointing she didn't use her AI power to start unlocking all types of spells. Got Earthwall? Throw fire into that instead of earth. Now Fire wall. Light Wall, Nature Wall ect. Also that she never threw mana into her stunning tazer to get lightning magic. WHO DOESN'T WANT LIGHTNING MAGIC! But those are all just personal 'come on nows' and didn't take away from the story and made sense why she didn't. Perhaps she will in the future if her protocols update to want to learn all types of magic for counters.

Read this if you like: Power fantasies

Listen, it was free on Audible.
And it was technically better than nothing.
As it went on, I was surprised by how much I liked it, but LitRPG's tend to live and die on external factors like worldbuilding and sideplots and this one's aren't great. Not bad, but not great.
The side characters are all pretty alright with a range of depths and attitudes, the setting isn't crazy but it's original enough to work, the plot is what it needs to be. The cyborg main character is both the weakest link and the biggest one. The joke is that, unlike a traditional isekai/litRPG protagonist, her robotic mind doesn't have the flexibility to question and understand the world around her, so she just keeps causing problems with her host of overpowered abilities as she thoughtlessly uses them. She is VERY boring once you get past the initial gag of her being a clueless automaton running around a world where she's dramatically overpowered. At least 90% of the book is written from her very boring perspective. She's funny when she's being observed from outside by other characters who have no idea what a cyborg is and therefore cannot even begin to understand her, but again, 90% of the book is from her perspective.
Because her character is so simple there's barely a plot, more like a collection of things that happen. We the audience can tell the cause and effect behind it all but it doesn't have a clear direction beyond being one foot being put in front of the other over and over again. The main character's intentionally poor understanding of how the world works is both the joke and the problem (she doesn't feel strongly about things and all of her actions are towards a nonsense goal so she does as little as possible with the outside world), and since she's so flat the rare occasions while she does have to struggle for something tend to land softly. Supposedly she gets better as the series goes on but I have to pay money for that and considering the author thought this gag was worth 350 pages of space I don't have high hopes she'll suddenly get good in book 2.
As it stands, most of the book is something I don't care about, watching the heroine cast Greater Maximized Mass Enhanced Empowered Charged Major Testicular Torsion on someone's pet dog.

Arrival: Terminate the Other World! Book 1 is an excellent LitRPG. I felt like I was reading a story made of video games. Isekai refers to a character being dropped into a foreign world and having to survive there. That's exactly what happens to NSLICE-00P (I just referred to her as NSLICE in my head). She's a cyborg designed as part of a military operation to find and detain specially powered people. When she completes her final mission and finds herself now solo in a new world, she must function completely alone for the first time and in a world with different rules. Social rules, cultural understanding, language, laws and even physics are all different there.

NSLICE combines the icy black-or-white thinking of a robot who is used to only following orders with the charming naivety of a child who has no idea she's attaining god-like powers. She means no one any harm and treats everyone with respect, unless they take hostile action toward her. Then the only response she's programmed with is termination of the entity. It's a dichotomy that earns her several minion type followers who are desperately loyal to her and conversely terrified by her.

Being a LitRPG, NSLICE starts her journey with only a few weak abilities. She quickly must spend her earned upgrade points to increase her abilities. The author did a good job of including this information slowly throughout the story, introducing new ability trees and stats as the story progresses. This is a good thing because by the end of the book these status update tiers take over multiple pages to scroll through. The author takes a similar tactic in revealing a massive new world with intricate history and political landscape, by slowly revealing background information in excerpts from books, quotes from famous characters, as well as character dialogue.

Highly recommend for fans of cyborgs, Isekai, LitRPG, Video games, and highly detailed, in depth action.

This fun LitRPG novel takes a science fiction staple – the cyborg – and transplants it into a magical fantasy setting. The cyborg in question, NSPLICE-00P is a young woman who doesn’t appear to have any of her humanity left. She was created by a supervillain to destroy all superheroes but things go wrong and she ends up traveling through time, killing her creator before he created her, and getting thrown out of her SF universe into the fantasy one. There she discovers that she is a cyborg, a character class, and a dungeon core all at the same time. And she begins to follow her original programming to terminate all hostiles.

There was never a moment in this novel when I thought that NSPLICE-00P was in any actual danger. Yes, she gets her arm ripped off once, and yes, occasionally she was momentarily flummoxed by the enemy, but those moments did not create dramatic tension for me. It just wasn’t the point of the book as far as I can tell. The point was to take this very literal cyborg and throw her into a fantasy setting which her programming was not adequate to understand. It’s an enjoyable, often humorous, journey with way too many readings of the cyborg’s extraordinarily long character sheet.

I don’t expect to read any more books in this series, but I did genuinely enjoy this one.

arrival, terminate the other world. Excellent don’t let this one go by.

A wonderfully fast paced book. This has now become my favorite series and I hope there’s plenty more to come. How could you not like an OP killer cyborg who is trying to find her humanity. The book is very humorous with great character development. I could take or leave the two kids, but the monster subordinates are great. No sex, no profanity, just good fast paste OP action from the MC. Personally, I want to see how this develops, I know it is on Royal Road, but I am going to wait probably until the next finished books in the series. I read a lot of books and I give this one five stars. If you really want to treat read this on audible. The narrator does an excellent job and a very passable Boris badenough, as well as an airhead spider. The narrator is excellent. and really brings out the humor in the story. if you like stories, such as system change, he who fights with monsters, Path of Ascension, azarinth healer, you will enjoy this book because I read all those series and I’m telling you this one is a gem.

hilarious mix of magic and science

The MC is a cyborg who somehow gets sent to a magic world, although it’s not clear what she’s supposed to do. Like a typical computer program, she seeks to find her new leaders so they can tell her what to do. Total fish out of water, and no one really knows what to make of her. She has modern weapons, but also learns magic and meets up with a pair of kids who are looking to become adventures and find one of their parents. The MC is half human, however, and sometimes her human side clashes with the more robotic side, although they usually get along. She becomes a dungeon corp to and uses her sup computer brain to systemize magic and dungeon powers. It is quite funny and has nice and fluffy characters and friends who grow and change. I definitely recommend.

Interesting and amusing

This book takes the overpowered isekai protagonist concept in a different direction, and manages humour and some drama.

The main character's concept combines a few separate genre ideas into a single character, and this is a novel approach to me in this genre. Also new to me in the LitRPG genre, there are times when two system voices will argue with each other. Giving "the system" personality is a fun touch.

I'm curious to read more, not only to have more laughs about how nonchalant the protagonist is about deploying Nanoha levels of power, but also to see where the plot thread the author dangled about one of the supporting characters leads to.

I loved it

Yay! I just finished reading this and I loved it.

Positives - Great idea / plot for a book and not one I’ve read before. Characters grow throughout book. Main character is overpowered but still able to grow and learn. It was just enjoyable to read. I want more. I am invested and plan to begin reading the next book in the series as soon as I finish writing this review.

Negatives - I love crunchy full of numbers game lit. But this book is overwhelming with all the stats. It gets to the point you just have to skip them.

I read this with kindle unlimited but plan to buy a copy for myself.

overall a good read

This book has some crazy long stats. I personally skip over them from time to time. The speaking mannerisms of the characters are a nice twist, but by the end of the book can get annoying. The cyborg/human mix is what makes the series interesting to me. I’ve not seen any other stories like it. I definitely recommend this series. Depending on your preference you might be put off by the long stats pages and/or mannerisms of the characters. I believe the narrators did a fabulous job with this series. The MC is op which is something else I like.

Book one

I enjoyed reading the story.
I did not enjoy all the stat pages. There is no need to post everything every time.
Just post the level ups and do maybe three full showings of the stat pages.
One full one at or around the beginning, another in the middle, and one last full one at the end.
I also didn't enjoy the way the stat pages kept changing font size and color.

6/10 Still more to read on Royalroad if you are interested.

I think this might be the most boring isekai/lit rpg type book I’ve ever read. I don’t think I’m gonna make it past chapter 12. The entire book is just reading off stats. Every other paragraph is stats. Characters talking? Stat description. MC starts flying? Stat description. Character thinks of the past? Stat description . Small fight scene? Stat description is 4 times longer than the actual fight

Nice light read, sometimes even funny. A balanced blend between SciFi, Hero, Tech and Fantasy litRPG.

NSLICE reminds me a lot of Vainqueur the Dragon. While not as gullible, they do share the same level of cluelessness. ^_^. Ignorance is fun and I find ignorant and clueless overpowered MCs to be entertaining.

This book has an issue with the stats readouts. The longest I've encountered so far. Not the most often cited, yet for sure the longest.

I will continue the series when on SALE.

Many painful hours of the audiobook are spent reading off "powers" and "achievements" over and over and over and over and over and over again.

When it's time for combat, these powers are suddenly forgotten.

MC collects not one, but two super annoying talking animal companions with obnoxious speech and behavior that is constantly repeated.

If the obvious and annoying filler and repetition were removed, this 17 hour book would drop to 2.

enjoyed

Very fun book to read. I really liked the concept of a cyborg warrior.this has the potential to be a good series. Only problem is one all the books of this genre have. That’s the skills sheet takes up so many pages toward the end I only skim over to get to the rest of the book.

Unique plot I never considered

This almost came across as a Bolo tank getting magic. I really liked the story but felt it could have had more punch. Trying to keep the main character dialog flat and repetitive, dropped it from 5 stars, and I'm hoping the second book improves that area. I enjoyed reading this a lot.

Terminator meets isekai. It was super imaginative and unique. I enjoyed the side characters. The voice acting was really good.

The MC is basically a robot with no personality. Which I think can be forgiven if you're reading the book but listening to it on audiobook makes the MC a little boring.

Also, super long staus updates 😮‍💨

Quite LITERALLY 20 minutes of stats every few chapters. ACTUALLY 20 minutes. Decent narrator but the first 96% of the book was VERY VERY dull. I also dont understand where the antagonist is, WHAT the plot is, or WHY we should care about it?
I was hoping SOME part of this book would be funny but I didn't find any part of it actually funny. Maybe it's meant for like...10 year olds? Read Dungeon Crawler Carl if you want a funny LitRPG.

Probably one of if not the most boring Isekai/Litrpg I have ever come across i slogged through 4 and a half hours before I had to call it quits. Imagine that at the start and end of every fight and every minor event you get a status update saying basically the same thing. Take that and then triple it, that is basically this entire book.

Great read, though I'm mildly concerned that future books will move more away from the primary protagonist's view. Well-paced, good story, good litRPG mechanics (sometimes too much; few parts where there are 10 straight pages of tables and stats).
Great for readers who enjoy litRPG and overpowered protagonists. Just expect some secondary character POVs as you go.

Comedy and violence

This is a good Isekai subversion, plain and simple. It balances the main characters incredible powers with an almost impossible goal and hard won character growth, and it's just plain fun to see a cyborg human weapon more machine than person blasting her way through fantasy land and try to regain just a little of that humanity she's been denied for so long.

Skip the Prologue

My first contact with this author. The story was good. However the beginning was horrible. I nearly quit because of the style, pace, and tone. Most of the prologue should probably been cut and if the author felt it absolutely necessary exposition to then spread throughout as flashbacks.

well, i have read book 1 and have decided to continue with book 2 although i am not convinced it is a serie for me. there is basically no character development, just a robot killing a lot of things and earning points for it, but not much else... Hopefully that will change going forward otherwise i am just wasting time....

There is no power balance in this book. At all. The MC is an interesting character in terms of who/ what they are. More of a robot without a personality than a character. Just the same, it's different enough between the MC and the system that it held my interest and I will read the next book.
