I was really digging this one up until the ending. I liked the world and the art a lot, but the story sort of ended just abruptly without much of an emotional payoff in any real way.

Tekoälyarkeologi tutkimassa viimeisen kerran post-apokalyptistä Maata? Todellakin kiinnostaa!

I liked it more than three stars would suggest but I can't quite go 4 stars. The beautiful thing about this book is that it is short and quick. It is unresolved and esoteric. The world building. You just have to guess, not much dialogue, although there are a few comments that are a bit on the nose. I really enjoyed this and will read it again.

Man, this was way too short.
Im absolutely blown away by the world building and the concept and it's so damn cool, but it rushes through at way too fast of a pace.
If it had at least a couple more issues it would be damn near perfect.

Lovely postapoc sci-fi that doesn’t overstay its welcome and yet builds some fun, grotesque lore along the way.

A really engaging story that takes place well after the destruction of humanity - the general syntax degrading shows it’s been a while since survival wasn’t the only focus. The world is being scouted and accounted for by a robot who has a soft spot for humans. Overall the story feels dark and violent but leaves you with that bit of hope that things will be better, even if the right now sucks.

The flowing white robot is a great design- love the world being filled with things telling a story that doesn’t become an issue in itself (was that the ISS they were resting next to?)

Interesting characters in a weird world, but it feels like a prelude to something.

A quick and enjoyable read. I liked the world building and the characters. The ending was a bit sudden and didn’t hook me emotionally but I still enjoyed it. It’s like a more violent Wall-e. I would have liked it to have been longer to allow more of an attachment and investment into the characters and to better spread out the story. 3.5/5

The art initially drew me into this story and did not disappoint. Stenbeck makes apocalyptic landscapes look great and does a great job telling the story with good pace and transitions. Over the story was above average and the art dynamite.

I went into this book mostly blind, simply because I loved the artwork and cover and it really paid out.
This reminded me of so many things like Mad Max and Nimona meeting John Wick and futuristic aliens while still feeling absolutely original.
The first thing that truly left me in awe was how believable and truly horrific the villains were and that also helped the reader to relate to the other characters, since we were terrified for them.
This was a very nice introduction to the world and I can't wait to see the direction in which the authors will take it.
Thank you to Edelweiss and Image Comics for this DRC.

Really interesting far post apocalypse wasteland filled with cannibals and got some reason aliens observing. Excellent art. But the story just... Makes more questions than answers. It's a fun ride but absolutely nothing makes sense or goes anywhere. Within the story itself is a linear plot but it's missing the beginning, the end and really like half of the middle. I'd love for this to be continued but it seems meant to be in this small wrapper.

(English below.)

Dennoch sehr empfehlenswert.

~~~
Not quite what I expected (the purple cover reminded me of space, I thought it was set there; and the dice of a Minecraft-like world :P, so maybe a different planet or even Earth, which has become like this in the future – roughly like in the first few pages). But ultimately not bad. The title is good.
I'm just wondering if the book is finished? It doesn't say "Volume 1". It feels more like the beginning of a longer series, the ending promises so much... Even though, similar to "Long Cold Winter", it's relatively predictable how humans will continue to live, this GN had even more mystery. Especially regarding the aliens/robots and their technology.
If there's no sequel, I'd also be interested in a prologue. Especially the story of Attis/Nana and his relationship with the old woman from the castle/village.
Still highly recommended.
The action scenes and body horror are certainly graphic, so not for the faint of heart. But, apart from the animal deaths, I thought it was quite good. Cannibalism is depicted far too rarely in post-apocalypses.
If that doesn't bother you, then you can look forward to detailed drawings and memorable character designs. I found Attis' particularly interesting (and its design transformation, as shown in the sketches in the bonus).
I also liked the poor grammar in the dialogue. It sounds obvious and logical that, after such events and the focus on survival, their vocabulary would contain only important words and short sentences. But that's also included far too rarely.
~
Thank you to CrossCult on Netgalley for a digital review copy. The German translation was released on March 17, 2025.
„Our Bones Dust” to debiutanckie solowe dzieło Bena Stenbecka, znanego ze współpracy z Mike’m Mignolą przy takich tytułach jak „Baltimore”, „Witchfinder” czy „Frankenstein”. W tym komiksie Stenbeck po raz pierwszy staje na czele projektu, zarówno jako scenarzysta, jak i rysownik, a jego dzieło od razu przyciąga uwagę.
Akcja komiksu rozgrywa się w postapokaliptycznym świecie, gdzie ludzkość została zredukowana do brutalnej, koczowniczej egzystencji w krainie pełnej kości i zgliszczy. Głównymi bohaterami są Attis, pozaziemski antropolog, oraz dzikie dziecko, które jest zarówno drapieżnikiem, jak i ofiarą w tym nieprzyjaznym świecie. Ich losy splatają się, gdy są ścigani przez kanibalistyczną rodzinę nomadów oraz zabójczego mechanicznego drapieżnika.
Stenbeck mistrzowsko tworzy napięcie i grozę, wprowadzając nas w świat, gdzie przemoc jest na porządku dziennym, a nadzieja jest towarem deficytowym. Przeciwnicy bohaterów są przerażający i wiarygodni, co sprawia, że czytelnik z łatwością utożsamia się z postaciami i obawia się o ich losy.
Narracja rozwija się na dwóch poziomach: z jednej strony mamy Attisa, którego zainteresowanie ludzkością graniczy z empatią, z drugiej zaś – dzikie dziecko, które walczy o przetrwanie. Ta dualność narracji wprowadza interesujący kontrast pomiędzy brutalnością świata a niemalże dziecięcą ciekawością pozaziemskiego badacza.
Rysunki Stenbecka są pełne detali i charakteryzują się wyraźną klarownością, co czyni narrację jeszcze bardziej przystępną i angażującą. Współpraca z Dave'em Stewartem, odpowiedzialnym za kolory, dodatkowo wzmacnia wrażenie wizualne komiksu, nadając mu głębię i klimat, które doskonale oddają atmosferę postapokaliptycznego świata.
Komiks „Our Bones Dust” nie tylko oferuje intensywną akcję i skomplikowaną fabułę, ale również intrygujące postaci, których losy śledzimy z zapartym tchem. Attis i dzikie dziecko tworzą nietypowy duet, który – mimo różnic – zaczyna działać jak zgrany zespół, przynosząc nadzieję na przetrwanie w świecie pełnym zagrożeń.
Dla miłośników postapokaliptycznych opowieści z domieszką science fiction i horroru, „Our Bones Dust” jest pozycją obowiązkową. Stenbeck udowadnia, że potrafi nie tylko rysować, ale również opowiadać historie, które zapadają w pamięć. Jest to jeden z ciekawszych komiksów jakie udało mi się dorwać i przeczytać w 2024 roku.
I reached this book after a recommendation by, in my opinion, one of the current masters of science fiction, the excellent Scott Base (@badspacecomics on Instagram; www.badspacecomics.com). It did not dissapoint.
The book is neither a masterpiece nor a discovery; it doesn't intend to shock the reader nor invents the wheel. Instead, in a similar fashion to Nelson Dániel's Durmiente, we are given a glimpse into the life in the barren wasteland left after our world crumbles. Post-apocalyptic as it is, and even though it keeps many of the visual cues the genre has adopted in modern times, this isn´t entirely Mad Max: the ruins, madmen and violence are there, but the tone is subtly different in its approach to human endurance and hope.
Ben Stenbeck writes and draws the story in "his first solo effort," as stated by his patron, Mike Mignola. And the influence of this frequent collaborator is clearly there - Mr Stenbeck's style, both in art and rythm, draw directly from Mignola's earliest (and best) works. This is masterfully enhanced, in great part, by the exquisite colors of Dave Stewart; even though the whole book happens in the desert, the oranges, beiges and pinks subtly mark the flow of time and keep the story going.
If anything, I only miss some sort of introduction (or afterword) by the author, giving us a little peek at the process or story behind the making of this book.
A self-contained page-turner that requires no previous knowledge of anything, Our Bones Dust is a beautiful story that should be enjoyed by any fan of science-fiction, as a sort of "palate cleanser" between longer reads.
Wow! I was really looking forward to reading this and it didn't disappoint; Ben Stenbeck's execution of this straightforwardly brutal, bloody, visceral and eventually hopeful survivalist tale in a post-apocalyptic North American Earth is beautifully drawn - at one point, when the young central protagonist (boy or girl, who knows, but it doesn't actually matter) kills one of the pursuing cannibal 'family' members, lead by a MAGA-quoting thug, I actually vocalised an 'oooofff' as his face was caved-in.
Of course, if it was just about the human remnants it would have retread many a tale told before, but with a couple of alien observers thrown into the mix, one of which, called 'Attis', decides to involve itself beyond the parameters set by 'higher-ups', means that the alien impact becomes much more of a factor, despite the aliens already dismissal of human civilization, to quote 'this system is dead' - not quite true as amongst the humans tech-remains also still operate, running on murderous programming.
This could easily have a sequel with how the alien observers have left earth and our unnamed protagonist, forever altered, behind - I do admire Stenbeck's restraint in ending the story where he does though.
Highly recommended, but not for the squeamish.
Auf einer trostlosen postapokalyptischen Erde erkundet eine außerirdische KI die Überreste der Zivilisation, wie wir sie mehr oder minder kennen. In diesen Überresten findet sie nicht nur technische Artefakte, sondern auch verstreut lebende Gruppen von Menschen, die auch vor Kannibalismus nicht Halt machen. Und ein wildes Kind, das sich gegen die Kannibalen zu wehren weiß.
Zu allem Überdruss gibt es eine überlebende Maschine, die von irgendwelchen Konzernen geschaffen wurde, die nicht mehr existent sind. Sehr unglücklich, dass die unterentwickelte KI in dieser Maschine diesen Umstand nicht erkennt und so zu einer Bedrohung aller lebenden Wesenheiten wird. Und es kommt zu einem Konflikt, dessen Ausgang ich natürlich nicht spoilere.
Die Kämpfe sind durchaus brutal, weshalb dieser Einzelband nichts für ein jüngeres Publikum ist. Die Zeichnungen sind modern, aber nicht unkenntlich abstrakt, so dass ich nicht denke, dass jemand damit Probleme haben wird.
Das Ende ist ein positiv gestimmtes, das nicht nach einer Fortsetzung schreit. Und wer es nicht verstanden hat, sollte sich fragen, was am Ende bleibt. Hoffnung. Jetzt sollte es eindeutig sein. Und damit auch die Empfehlung für diese Graphic Novel.
A robot searching for a historical AI data in an apocalyptic world. A little boy literally fighting for his life after stealing water from a group of cannibalistic people. The world is destroyed, there are no seas, only corpses of ships. Deserts and wrecked buildings, diseases.
The world building is done masterfully here and I like its slightly mysterious atmosphere and partial hiding of the reason of why the world is destroyed, keeps this interesting. However, the last spread was a little disappointment, I expected something else, something more. All in all, this was still great and its beautifully drawn. I can’t recommend this to those who don’t like gore and seeing blood, though. It was nice to see some sketches and alternative covers in the end of this book.
Das Buch lebt natürlich von den Illustrationen, die die Geschichte erzählen - trostlos, brutal und in gedämpften Farben wird die post-apokalyptische Welt dargestellt. Die Handlung erschliesst sich einem nur langsam, so dass man anfangs mit einem großen Fragezeichen im Kopf dem Geschehen folgt. Das Ende kam dann viel zu abrupt und lässt viele Fragen offen, vielleicht (hoffentlich) um eine Fortsetzung zu ermöglichen.
Fazit: hier sollte man sich ganz auf die in den Bildern eingefangene Stimmung einlassen.
I liked that in this post-apocalyptic world, where humans have devolved into backwards cannibal hicks, the AI/robots from the planet also devolved. They come across this monstrosity of a former techo-something, whose programming and broken directives basically devolved it into a stuttering, murderous thing, as hungry as the humans in its own way.
...But then when it cyborg-merged with one of the cannibals, that was a bit silly.
Un mélange entre la BD The Road et Wall-E si l’on veut.
Très peu de dialogues, bcp d’actions et d’exploration de ce monde où le cannibalisme existe et que la race humaine semble presque anéanti. Parfois gore. Bien illustré.
Diese Graphic Novel hat ein fantastisches World Building mit einer perfekten Mischung aus Science-Fiction und Dystopie. Die Illustrationen und Charaktere sind großartig. Leider ist die Handlung eher etwas schneller und durch wenige Dialoge und Worte muss viel zusammengereimt werden. Dazukommt das Ende abrupt war, was die Handlung heruntergezogen hat.
This was a weird one, for sure. A cannibalistic dystopian world ruled by flying robots and bugs who communicate which barbaric clans fight over lost people as a food source. Very violent with a MAD magazine quality of artwork about it. I might not be racing to the shelf for volume two of this series.
The art and colours were nice, but using more purple than brown would have been nice. Not everything had to be objective truth coloured.
The story fir first three abd a half issues was simple then the ending felt rushed and odd.
