Brief Summary-
This psychological thriller centers around Gemma who was once “over weight” and now is now competing in a bikini competition. You follow Gemma as she gets ready for her completion but she can’t get “fat Gemma” out of head and she thinks “Fat Gemma” is going to ruin her chances to win. But when all the other fit models are being murder around her, Gemma fears she might be next.

What To Expect-
🔆Multiple POVs
🔆Unhinged Ladies Behaving Badly

Content Warnings
🔆Eating Disorders
🔆Fat Shaming
🔆Binging & Purging
🔆Stalking

My Thoughts-
This was an interesting thriller. I dont think I ever heard or read a book centered around female body builders. So it was fun to read, I think I enjoyed it because of course it was filled with drama. Just picture a bunch of girls that dont like each other in one room competing…. Then add some murder to the mix and you have yourself a fun little page turner. I was definitely guessing whodunnit till the very last chapter. I kept going back in forth with a few suspect. But everyone in this book had a motive. I think some parts fell flat for me but still an enjoyable read.

I would recommend this book to the right audience.

Offline, the cutthroat world of bikini bodybuilding may just eat her alive. That’s if she’s not first devoured by the secret nemesis that lurks beneath her polished surface, waiting to destroy her.

Software engineer Ashley is fat and frustrated. Frustrated with failed diets. With a world that wants her to shrink. With biased doctors, online trolls, and even her own mother. She’ll do whatever it takes to ride this high, destroy Diet Culture, and win the approval of her charismatic leader.

Gemma and Ashley are on a collision course headed for the Olympia, the bodybuilding competition where futures are made. And lost. When Gemma’s toughest rival turns up dead, and more fitness girls fall like dominoes, it’s beginning to look like the body image war has gone too far.

Bodies to Die For was somewhat of a departure from what typically read. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of suspense as well as a healthy dose of thrills, but alongside it was a thought-provoking social commentary concerning weight and self-worth. From the quirky storyline to the catty competitors, I got sucked into the plot as the satirical tale firmly took hold.

Speaking of those characters, the multiple POVs included a variety of individuals. Between the few I loved to hate and the two central narrators who I found myself rallying behind, they ran the gamut from merely unlikeable to compelling home runs. But it was Gemma and Ashley who got my ardent admiration. Complete with stunning character arcs, their story was the clinch hit in this impressive debut.

The best piece to this psychological thriller, however, was easily the insight shared concerning how women and society in general both push and internalize ideals about appearance. Often toxic, it can lead to the devastating repercussions. Instead, women should work together—not in opposition—to support one another. All in all, Brand did a marvelous job imparting this message.

Done and dusted, I found this book to be a quick, easy read that I inhaled in just a single sitting. With short chapters, off-the-chart scenes, and plenty of underlying humor, even the slow burn start didn’t ruin it for me. Just be aware that you will have to suspend all disbelief before diving headlong into this thoroughly enticing tale. Take it from me, this wild ride will keep you guessing throughout as you race through the pages. Rating of 4 stars.

This was such an enjoyable thriller. I loved that it played with themes of body positivity and toxic diet/fitness culture. I am already passionate about these topics but I loved how the author played with these ideas, weaving them brilliantly into a smart, twisty novel.

I would highly recommend this novel to people who are interested in these themes or are simply looking for a fun new novel.

Sadly this thriller, while unique in its premise, didn't work for me. There are so many characters to keep track of, and not one of them was likable - leaving me with no one to root for. One of the hallmarks of a great thriller is making the reader invested in the outcome - who lives and dies and who's doing the killing - even if the characters are morally grey or unreliable. But in this case, I just couldn't muster an ounce of concern or curiosity and was just along for the ride while occasionally scoffing at the over-the-top campiness and preachiness of it all. I think this could have been improved on with some more editing to tighten up the plotting and allow the reader the chance to get invested in the characters' fates.

As it stands, though, Bodies to Die For was a dud with a muddled message.

Trigger/Content Warnings: eating disorders (graphic on page depiction), body dysmorphia, fatphobia, domestic abuse, starvation, stalking, misogyny, slut shaming, objectification, misuse of mental illness terminology, loss of parents, drug use, infidelity, murder

This one was not for me. I get very turned off by the general idea of anyone criticizing anyone else’s body let alone a whole book about it. The twist was lacking, I was not invested in the plot or any of the characters. 2.5 rounded up thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review.

“As long as I don’t do anything stupid like let Fat Gemma out of her cage, or a serial killer into my room, tonight is looking promising.”

Gemma is a before and after success story. Once morbidly obese, she is now a bikini fitness competitor at the top of her game with a huge social media following and paid sponsorships. Gemma still has a relentless voice inside her she refers to as Fat Gemma, who is ALWAYS hungry and looking for excuses to eat, eat, eat. Gemma’s biggest rival in her upcoming competition turns up dead, and more strange deaths soon follow. Is someone killing off “fit girls”? Is Gemma next?

Ashley is fat and frustrated with her attempts to lose weight. She’s tried everything and just when she is considering bariatric surgery, she meets a charismatic woman (Lydia) who is happy just as she is and recruits Ashley into the world of Fat Activism railing against Diet Culture. Ashley finds herself empowered, even as she’s dragged into dangerous situations by Lydia. Remember Big Bob drinking the Tyler Durden kool-aid? I was gettin Fight Club vibes y’all!

Lori Brand shines a bright light on the diet and fitness industries, and the war of body acceptance in this insightful satire. She perfectly nails the internal voice most of us have that whispers self sabotaging lies. I felt like simultaneously eating a cake and doing a workout! Both Gemma and Ashley are relatable and have a refreshingly honest vulnerability while fighting to find their inner strength.

Bodies to Die For is so wonderfully deranged, you want to be ON the CrAzY train even as it plummets toward wreckage! The pure I n S a N i T y is as addictive as a sugar high. I’ve never met such a huge cast of people OFF. THEIR. ROCKERS! Multiple POVs all over the place and just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, POV shifted to an even more delusional and obsessive mind. I loved every unhinged and humorous minute of Bodies to Die for and inhaled it faster than a protein shake! Lori absolutely crushed her debut.

This book is so different than anything I have read in a while, and I absolutely loved it. This has two fantastic sides - a fun yet gripping thriller, and a social commentary on a very serious subject. The two combined to make for quite an unputdownable book.

Gemma is a weight loss/health influencer and fitness trainer getting ready for the Bikini Olympia, an annual bodybuilding competition. She’s lost 100 pounds, and documented her journey on Instagram, from a morbidly obese woman to a toned and thin one, through strict diet and exercise.

Ashley is a plus-size girl who originally aspired to be like Gemma until she met Lydia, a “fat activist” out to destroy Diet Culture. She soon starts to despise fitness influencers and their unrealistic mentalities. She begins to embrace her body for what it is, eat what she wants, and become a constant thorn in the side of several influencers. She decides to go to the Olympia to protest unrealistic body standards, and that’s when things get crazy. Influencers and weight-loss gurus are being targeted for murder - will Gemma be next?

The story is great, with excellent characters, an original plot and a compelling look at how social media distorts the reality of what a “healthy” body looks like. Is it the larger woman who exercises, is strong and mentally healthy, or the exhausted woman counting macronutrients and working out until she is about to vomit? ARCs aren’t really supposed to be quoted, as things may change, but I hope this makes it into the final draft. “Fuck Fat Gemma. Fuck Thin Gemma, too. Their battle sucks. It’s stupid.” That pretty much sums it up perfectly. Five stars for a thrilling and thoughtful debut.

This thriller was a wild ride. There are a lot of characters you get the perspective from and on audiobook that was at times a little confusing and hard to follow. Most of the characters are pretty awful (and a few are conflicted) and there isn’t anyone to really love (Tony was pretty great though), but it was still a good thriller. The two main characters are opposites in so many ways. Gemma is a fitness influencer who lost a ton of weight and now coaches other women trying to change their lives. Ashley is overweight and defeated by never being able to fit into society’s views. This story went in so many directions and while I saw most of the turns coming there were a couple that caught me by surprise. The narrator did a good job bringing characters to life. However you feel about the fitness industry this one is a fun thriller.

Bodies to Die For by Lori Brand was such an entertaining read! It was a twisty psychological thriller that delved into the dark culture of fitness, body image and social media obsession. Set against the backdrop of the Olympia competition, this centered around an Olympia bikini competitor, Gemma Jorgenson, who is also a fitness influencer who grapples with the pressure of maintaining her image and the haunting remnants of her past as ‘Fat Gemma.’

When Gemma’s top competitor for the Bikini Olympia title (and defending champion) is found dead, and is soon followed by other competitors, it’s clear that there is a fit-girl serial killer out there. Will Gemma and others stay the course and survive long enough to finally take the title?!

As a former physique competitor, I found Bodies to Die For especially compelling. Lori Brand captures the fitness world with a sharp eye – portraying both the drive and discipline it demands, and the darker, often unspoken toll it can take. Th extremes of diet culture, identity tied to appearance, and the constant judgement – both internal and external are laid bare. What impressed me most was how seamlessly Brand weaves this cultural critique into suspenseful, page-turning narrative that intensifies as Gemma gets closer to stepping on stage, while also somehow then squeezing in some truly laugh-out-loud comedic scenes. It’s a rare blend of authenticity, tension and entertainment that had me hooked from start to finish!

If you’re after a fast-paced thriller that not only entertains but also shines a light on important social issues, this one might just hit the mark!

This thriller debut is so unique and wild! I was hooked from page one and I couldn’t devour it fast enough. This gave insight on what fitness folks deal with on a daily based and let me tell you I don’t have that kind of will power, but it was so moving and inspirational. While there was bread crumbs sprinkled though, my mind was going in ten directions trying to figure out who the killer was and man would I have never figured it out.

I listened to the audiobook and there were times where I did not want to stop. I loved the narration but the POV for Ashley was difficult at times due to the speaking volume and the tone. But that didn’t take away from my enjoyment!

I can’t wait to see what Brand comes up with next and I have to thank her so much for getting me an eARC! I highly recommend this book but before you grab it make sure to check out the trigger warning.

Lori Brand’s gripping debut thriller pulls back the curtain on the dark side of the world of female bikini fitness competitions. A cutthroat and ugly underbelly lurks just under the sparkly veneer of sequins, spray tans, and 5-inch heels. Where competitors flash dazzling practiced smiles while they stab each other in the back. Sounds like hyperbole… until someone starts killing the competitors one by one.

Meanwhile, Ashley is on the other side of the never-ending conversation about women’s bodies. She’s overweight and unhappy about it when she gets sucked into the fat activism movement. But what starts as body positivity, empowerment, and railing against diet culture soon takes a sinister turn, and Ashley may be in deeper than she bargained for.

This book was already on my list of highly anticipated summer thrillers, so I cracked the spine the second the ARC hit my shelf and proceeded to devour it in record time! Twisty, turny, and totally bingeable, I couldn’t get enough of this clever thriller! Multiple POVs, short chapters, and snappy prose had me racing through the pages! This behind-the-scenes look at body building competitions is dished up with drama, suspense, murder, and deliciously catty infighting among fitness influencers. Skillfully interwoven along the way is timely and pointed social commentary about the unrelenting toxic messaging around women’s bodies. I highly recommend this thoroughly entertaining and insightful read!

“Bodies to die for” is a psychological thriller that enters the minds of two FMC, Gemma and Ashley, and centres around the toxicity inside the fitness world, the pressure on women to achieve and maintain unrealistic body types and all the drama surrounding this world.

This is an excellent debut book, and you can tell the author is writing from first hand experience from her many years in the fitness and model industry. The plot is so relevant and true our everyday lives.

Gemma is preparing for a bikini competition, Ashley is an IT Specialist launching a body positive campaign with plus sized women. Their lives unknowingly interconnect when they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery with a killer who is targeting fitness influencers.

“ Perfect for fans of You Shouldn’t Have Come Here and None of This Is True, Bodies to Die For is a brilliant psychological thriller that will have readers wondering whether the perfect body really is worth dying for ...”

The author had a very mixed message with their story, and I don't really like either side of this body shaming issues. However I will say that I didn't guess who the killer was and the thriller aspect of the story was good, just not in this context.

I was hearing such great things about this book, so when ai saw the audio available on NetGalley I had to grab it. I listened to most of it in a day, it was a pretty addictive listen. The cast of narrators were fantastic and brought the story to life.

This was a fun murder mystery with a unique setting. The fitness and diet industry gives so many different story lines. We had the women who had transformed their lives and bodies, we had the haters, the Fat Activists and we had the obsessed fans. Nothing is what it seems in this story where the body count just keeps growing. What is the perfect body? A healthy one, but thee are some very strong opinions in this book. Who is killing the fitness influencers?

Thanks so much to Blackstone Publishing, Audio for my advanced copy. Out on June 11th, and well worth a listen.

TITLE: BODIES TO DIE FOR
AUTHOR: Lori Brand
PUB DATE: 06.11.2024

Bodies to Die For by Lori Brand is a compelling and impressive debut about diet culture, fat shaming, social media, and the lengths one will go, to achieve beauty and a body to die for.

I love the fast paced writing? And the two characters Gemma, a fitness influencer and Ashley, fat shamed into fighting back as a fat activist, had me rooting for them as incredibly fleshed out characters, and I have enjoyed reading their POVs the best.

If you enjoy murder mysteries, give this one a read for a unique and quirky plot, multiple suspects and red herring, plot twists, and overall so fun to read.

#ad I received a gifted copy of this book - many thanks to @blackstonepublishing + @bibliolifestyle #partner

“Nervous energy rattles through me, but not the good kind, typical of a show day. No, this is the energy of Wendy in The Shining, hiding from Jack as he calls, ‘Come out, come out, wherever you are,’” (201).

What in the what did I just finish reading? I’ll tell you: A book so wholly unique and captivating that you can’t stop reading it. You have to find out what is behind all of these people being killed. The plot is fast-paced and will suck you in like a tornado. Take cover, or don’t, but you have to read this one!

Gemma has worked most of her life to keep “Fat Gemma” at bay. Don’t eat that cake, that cookie will make you fat again. Once you start eating you know you won’t be able to stop. She’s battled this voice in her head that is always telling her she’s not good enough, but now she’s a bodybuilder and has a real shot of winning this year’s competition.

Anita, Gemma’s rival and competition, will do whatever she can to win. Even if it means sabotaging other competitors.

Lydia hates diet-culture and spends most of her time trying to end it. She’s got a whole band of followers who help her in this mission. Most notably Ashley. Ashley is moving up the ranks in Lydia’s circle and will do almost anything for Lydia. But will she have blind loyalty or follow her own path?

While I read this delightful book I kept a “suspect” list near by. By the time I got to the end of the book I had a full page of suspects and all the reasons why they could be the killer. I was right and I was wrong.

This is a story that has a lot of moving parts but somehow it all works and comes together in such a fantastic way. You’ll know what I mean once you’ve read it, because you NEED to read this one.

I did have a tiny issue with Gemma when she lost her hotel key. She was already on high alert and watching her back, so why would she stay in her room after “losing” her key? It didn’t make sense to me. This would be a great discussion piece.

The story is told in five sections: (think I got them all) starting with Showtime, going back to Two Months Earlier, then Peak Week, to Show Day, and finally Post Show. I love the format this book followed, it made the story come together perfectly in my mind.

We also get all the different character’s perspectives, the storyline alternates between characters, which I don’t usually love but it works so well with this story.

I was also highly entertained with all the social media wars that were happening here. The scary thing is that these types of things happen in real life too.

Last thoughts: stop judging people on their looks or weight - there’s no perfect. I love how the author used this book to send a message that it’s about building strength and not how much you weigh or don’t weigh.

Never read a book quite like this one before. Also, that one twist at the end !! Did NOT see that one coming. At all. But the hints were there - even if in hindsight.

There’s so much more I want to say but this review is already ridiculously long, so I’ll end it here.

Bodies to Die For by Lori Brand is a gripping thriller set in the world of women’s bodybuilding. This book kept me hooked from the first page to the very last. The story follows an intriguing plot with well-drawn characters, particularly Gemma and Ashley. I loved trying to figure out how their lives intertwined and seeing how the story would come together in the end.

Brand used her experience with lifting and fitness and included themes of body positivity versus body shaming. I loved getting a behind the scenes look at a bodybuilding competition, and the drama that unfolded made this such a fun and interesting debut. Brand's writing style is easy to follow, and she does a great job balancing suspense with toxic diet culture, making for an entertaining and engaging read.

I had serious FOMO after seeing all the rave reviews of this book! I am so thankful to the author for sending me a copy to read and review!

I was a little apprehensive- this thriller warns the readers of the potentially triggering subject - eating disorders. I gave myself grace and decided to stop if it was too much for me…..

It was not - in fact I feel so inspired! Ladies this book speaks loudly and so joyously with such sincerity and truth

Influencer Gemma has transformed herself from the fat “before” to the washboard abs “after”

Meanwhile, Ashley is desperate not to be fat, constantly shamed by media, strangers, even her mother

This lighthearted story is told through multiple POVs over the countdown to the Ms Olympia contest… where the contestants keep turning up dead!

This was such a fun, quick and easy read. I admire how popcorn fun this was, but still managing to capture the many issues and judgements made to women’s’ bodies

I suspected everyone at one point or another of being the serial killer - so many outrageously awful people!

The audiobook was great, and I especially loved Gemma - her intonation was adorable and I loved listening

The slapstick humor worked well and arriving at the competition was thrilling! I loved the twists and the ending made me feel great! This was an awesome inspiring, kickass, light thriller!

I did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I did, it’s a little different type of thriller than I’m used to. But, I loved it! I flew through it, and really enjoyed it. I really liked the character development and multiple viewpoints throughout the story. There was a lot of names to remember but it wasn’t difficult to comprehend. This was a book sent to our book club from a publisher and I’m happy they chose us to read and review it.

This book hit. I LOVED Ashley as an evil narrator, somehow she was my favorite character. I was halfway through and could not put it down. I think the author did a fantastic job with the twists and character shifts. There was one chapter where I was like WHAT?! did I not even know Gemma until now?

The author does include a content warning for anyone struggling with healthy body positivity which is me and most women I would guess but I ended the book with a happy heart.

Well done!

Diet culture is often a taboo topic for millennials like myself. We grew up entrenched in finding the next best fad and inundated with photoshopped magazine ads that only serve to create an unhealthy dose of body dysmorphia. It goes without saying that this novel piqued my interest immediately. Added bonus of a few murders, radical fat activists, and some pretty deranged stalkers and I was hooked.

Gemma has literally remade her life along with her body. Her new life is bright and shiny and literally available for anyone to peruse through social media. Previously being overweight, she has an incredibly toxic relationship with her weight and with food. Despite struggling with Imposter Syndrome, she offers online and live coaching to women seeking a healthier lifestyle while training as a contestant in a prestigious body building competition.

Along the way, several other influencers with relationships to Gemma are murdered. Her house is broken into and she feels she is unable to trust her husband, boss, or coach. Throw in an arch nemesis that attempts to sabotage her chance of winning the competition and we have a pretty epic psychological thriller.

The scenes and character switches are set up extremely well. I listened to the audio production and enjoyed both the male and female narrators. The flow is easy to follow as well. My only gripe is Gemma is a bit flat overall as a main character and entirely too naive for the whodunit trope. Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing Audiobooks for allowing me to listen to this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you so much to the author & Blackstone Pub for gifting me an ARC!

This psychological thriller (or should I say fitness thriller?) centers around two FMC, each with different intents and purposes but are actually connected in ways unbeknownst to them. 𝐆𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 has worked very hard to lose weight and is now preparing for her annual bikini competition by adopting a very rigorous fitness routine and diet. In the process, Gemma has to deal with intrusive thoughts, a very toxic fitness industry and a host of people impeding her success. 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲 is a highly intelligent IT specialist who is comfortable in her body but has been let down all her life by people fat-shaming her. She finds a new purpose when she joins a body positivity campaign of plus sized women activists who are about to launch nationwide protests, including the bikini competition that Gemma is attending. However things get a little complicated for both Gemma and Ashley in different ways, as there’s a murderer on the lose, targeting fitness influencers.

I don’t know how Lori did it, encompassing an entertaining, nail-biting debut thriller involving important elements of body positivity, being comfortable in your own skin and the toxic labels of the fitness industry so prevalent in today’s world…but a phenomenal job she did indeed. 𝑩𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝑻𝒐 𝑫𝒊𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 was my FAVORITE April book and a strong contender to my top 2024 books. What I appreciated most with this book was that Lori penned the entire story with the mindset of women uplifting other women, and at no point in the book does the tone get fitness preachy. The ending was 💋chef’s kiss💋 and will go down among my absolute favorites of some badass female empowerment! I can’t wait to read Lori’s future books!

In the recesses of her mind, Gemma is always “Fat Gemma”, even though she now has rock-hard abs and is an up-and-coming fitness trainer who represents REIGN fitness company and competes in body-building competitions. Yes, she is often over-extended and exhausted, and her coach pushes her too hard, but it’s all worth it…right? Ashley is a talented software engineer with her own consulting business. But she is very plus-sized in a world that tells her every day that she is too large, takes up too much space and needs to lose weight. Ashley finally finds acceptance in an elite and secret group of warrior-women who push back against diet and fitness culture. But Ashley isn’t sure what she has gotten herself into, when people in the diet and fitness world start getting killed and the leader of the group, Lydia, is acting in a suspicious manner. Gemma and Ashley’s opposing worlds are about to collide, and they better figure out who they can really trust, because things are about to get deadly.

This fascinating novel is more than a thriller. Throughout the story, the author deftly explores important issues such as societal judgment and condemnation of body size; the toxicity of diet and fitness culture; and the exploitation of vulnerable people by charismatic and influential leaders on both sides of the issue. The treatment of the fitness versus ‘fat acceptance’ culture is very even-handed and important to the understanding of the characters and storyline. While it tackles important social issues, the core of the story is still a whodunnit with several plausible culprits. It is a quick and enjoyable read – recommended for thriller readers who enjoy short chapters, a quick pace and multiple POV. Many thanks to Blackstone Publishing for the copy to read.

It’s not fair to be annoyed by a book because I waited a long time to get it and then didn’t like it, but the fact is that I didn’t enjoy Lori Brand’s Bodies to Die For and gave up less than a quarter of the way through. I found it shallow and cartoonish - the sort of writing better suited to a comic book full of words WOW! or POW in text balloons shaped like 💥 or 🗯️. But that’s just me. Unlike diction, on which there is more-or-less a consensus among the literate, the use of adjectives like funny or exciting or sexy or insightful reveals more about the user than the subject. Suffice it to say that I would not use any of them to characterize Bodies to Die For.

Wow. This was an insightful, twisty, addicting ride! The author showed the dangerous side of being obsessed with weight and the mental gymnastics you endure when you aren’t satisfied with the way the world views your body. I really loved this! I will be buying the physical copy for my bookshelf when this comes out.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

Fast paced psychological thriller that mainly follows two female main characters that are connected in more ways than they think. This book is getting all the buzz at @thrillerbookloversthepulse. #pulsepoint #thepulse.
Gemma used to be heavier and now is a fitness competitor. She has a huge social media following, sponsorships and coaches others. You’d never know she struggles internally with “fat Gemma”.
Ashley is heavy set and wants to be someone like Gemma. Until she meets Lydia, a fat activist that wants to destroy diet culture. She teams up with her until fitness models start to get murdered. She starts thinking Lydia’s group is far more dangerous than she thought.
As someone who has struggled with my weight since a teen, I loved this book. It covers the toxicity in the fitness world, body positivity, being strong and lifting each other up.
