Acknowledged as "America's most popular suspense novelist" (Rolling Stone) and as one of today's most celebrated and successful writers, Dean Ray Koontz has earned the devotion of millions of readers around the world and the praise of critics everywhere for tales of character, mystery, and adventure that strike to the core of what it means to be human.
Dean, the author of many #1 New York Times bestsellers, lives in Southern California with his wife, Gerda, their golden retriever, Elsa, and the enduring spirit of their goldens, Trixie and Anna.
The trilogy of the first 3 Frankenstein novels could just as well have been put together as a single book and spared us the endless repetition of explanations and references. What started as a pretty good yarn became steadily more tedious and bogged down as it drew to its inevitable apocalyptic conclusion. I'm not sure I'll be reading Book 4 - he's flogged the main characters far too long. Deucalion showed a lot of promise but the parts of the books are so spread out and disjointed he gets buried in all the fluff and fuss. Sorry about all that - I had high hopes for this one *sigh*
This one was kind of weird...I loved the first 3/4 of the book, but then all of a sudden it was like the wheels came off. Instead of going with the creepy/supernatural/thriller vibe it had been until then, it started to become somewhat of a joke. I cannot for the life of me understand how the character of Jocko even fit into the story. He was ridiculous! I got so tired of reading the parts of the story with him in it, that I found myself skimming through very quickly, just to get past it. Also, the way that Victor checks out at the end was such a disappointment...lots of buildup for a very lackluster finish. I am just about to start the 4th book, so we'll see if things get any better from here...
I adore Dean Koontz and this series is a great read as always. I love the character of Deucalion and his redeeming qualities. The detectives are fun...the story is interesting. I've read all 5 in this series and enjoyed it. It's not a "life changing" novel - but it does what I need from a book - keeps me entertained and takes me away from responsibilities for a while. I also love his Odd Thomas series.
As a lover of both Frankenstein and Koontz, I had high hopes for this series and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s such a unique take and really brings to life the old question of whether creator or creature is truly the monster.
Without a doubt, one of my favourite modern takes on Frankenstein.
I enjoyed these 3 books… it took me a little bit to get into the first book Prodigal Son, but once I got started, it went pretty quickly. I needed a little break from my True Crime obsession, I believe. There actually are 2 more books in this series, of course I’m waiting on book 4, but already have book 5. Koontz certainly puts an interesting spin on the Frankenstein story, but I like it. Can’t wait to start the next book, so, I’ll update when it arrives.
An interesting mix of irritating and exhilarating prose in three apparently revised novels gathered together in one volume... I have serious doubts about whether I'll ever read books 4 or 5.
I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz and somehow missed reading this series until recently. I must say he never disappoints and these books were no exception. Spine tingling thriller that is a new take on Frankenstein with a little humor thrown in. Totally enjoyed and would recommend for any Koontz fan.
This is a good re-imagining. The series really should have been four books instead of five. That aside. Jocko has become a favorite character of mine. He's a sad and lovable hat lover. The Monster who I just call "D" is written amazingly, not nessacerily what he says but just the character in general.
I am not usually one who likes Frankenstein books, but Dean Koontz is amazing and brilliant!! He made these books humorous, and interesting at the same time. He had me hooked from the moment I read page one!
It felt like he was tired of writing the story as the ending was for me a bit anti-climatic. I have now started reading the 4th book and I can't help but feel that Dean had a new story in mind and buttoned up the original story hastily so that he can start the new one.
The story is a good one. Frankenstein is alive in modern day New Orleans and the real evil is his maker, both of whom defy death. You add two Police Officers and a cadre of other players and you have a Koontz story.
I found it at times disturbing, repulsive, funny and addictive and as another reader said, I was ready to be done but then discovered there are more installments...............I must read on.
The book was so-so. The first part was awesome but then the repetition got old really fast! I feel like I need to finish the series same off to go read the others
I could never put these books down...I loved them! I was so frustrated when another would come out, because I knew it meant the bad guy was still going, and I was going to have to devour the book to find out what happened! I have never cheered to myself as much as I would whenever Deucalion would enter a scene. I recommend every book in this series.
