Ice Planet Clones #2

Surviving Skarr

Rate this book
Overnight, my life has changed to one of sheer survival.

I wake up on a strange alien world covered in ice. I have no memories of myself, not even my name.

And I've resonated to the biggest braggart on the planet. Skarr is a chest-beating alpha male gladiator with lizard genetics and an intense case of self-love. He tells everyone within hearing distance how amazing he is. Bleh.

I want nothing to do with him, but according to the khui, we're soulmates. This means we're bound to have babies and live our lives out together...forever...

Not if I have anything to say about it.

To survive, I'm going to have to figure out who I am, what I am...and what to do about the man who won't shut up about how incredible and perfect I am.

It has to be an act... doesn't it?

I didn’t like this coupling at all at first and then it grew on me so quick and now I’m utterly in love with them both.
I’m not a big fan of the whole splicing species concept cause it makes me sad, but this was interesting to read about nonetheless.

I REALLY need a story about the girl who was kidnapped at the start - I hate that this is still happening on this damn planet and I need to know if she’s okay lmao.

Me rating a Ruby Dixon book below 4 stars? Not likely.

Unless, of course, the book surrounds one of the most ridiculous female characters I’ve ever read. Vivi, a human clone, ends up quickly matched with Skarr, who is an alien clone, but more specifically a splice, meaning he’s a hybrid of various aliens. If you’ve read Dixon’s other works, you would’ve seen this in Gren.

From the very beginning of the book, Vivi is going through an identity crisis. Since finding out she’s a clone, she struggles with figuring out who she is, and it doesn’t help that her name is given to her by Flor.

To that point, Vivi struggles heavily with speaking up for herself. She is so uncomfortable with airing her grievances that when Flor names her Vivi, she internally gripes about it but says nothing to Flor, so as to not come across as problematic. This behavior, paired with her identity crisis, make for the most ridiculous of FMCs.

Somehow, she ends up paired with Skarr, who is a very boisterous, obnoxiously proud male. I must be in the minority here, but I actually really liked Skarr. Maybe it because he had a personality and, idk, didn’t complain too much about his circumstances? Whatever the reason, I felt so bad that he had to end up with Vivi. She treated him horribly, always thinking of herself and who “she” is. At no point does she give any real thought to Skarr, without thinking about herself at the same time. She was so brash to him and constantly worried about what other people thought of them, which is funny given she later tells Skarr that “if I dont like something I’m going to tell you. I’m not a suffer in silence kind of girl” …. So who was the Vivi we spent 80% of the book reading about?

This brings me to my last point — this book is too long for nothing to happen. There were so many ways we could have seen more plot develop, and instead we had to read about a FMC who wants to become friends before lovers. Sure, that’s reasonable, but how is it that they can spend weeks without fulfilling resonance and be fine, yet in previous books Josie and Haeden were near death? This is the fundamental aspect of the khui, there should at least be some consistency here. There’s also a time where she considers turning off both her AND Skarr’s khui, yet doesn’t ask Skarr what his thoughts are on the matter. Again, this is consistent in her thinking only of herself.

Ruby is one of my favorite authors, but man did this book fall flat. 2 stars because we got to see the other characters from Ice Home, and we got to see Ashtar.

I loved this one!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💚💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌎
Character development: ☹️☺️😍😄😘
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Vivian (a.k.a. Vivi) - she wakes up naked, thinking she is in her bed, but she finds herself in some sort of sleeping pod and it is very cold. She finds that she was sent to an ice planet but has no clue what her name is and how she got there. The human woman named Flor that is in charge, since she lives on the planet, gives her the name Vivian and she finds a device on her wrist with a hologram that tells her she is a clone and clones are illegal and usually put to death, so she and a bunch of other clones were put on the ice planet where she could live safely.

The Hero: Skarr - he is a clone with splices of Messakah, a lizard-like alien, and a few other things, and has always known he was a clone, but he is also a gladiator and made to fight in the arena. He and the other gladiators, figure there were too many clones made, which is why they are unwanted and were placed on the ice planet. Though they don’t really understand how to live without fighting and competitions. They think the women are their prizes and want nothing more than to compete and mate with the females.

The Story: Skarr and Vivian get their Khui (symbiote) to keep them healthy and warmer on the ice planet. Skarr wants to resonate with one of the females, so he and another gladiator fight each other, with the hopes that the winner will resonate and get a woman as a prize. He thinks he is the greatest thing ever, when he wins the fight even though all the women are not happy about them fighting for no reason. He thinks his plan worked though when he resonates with Vivi. She is not happy that she resonated with Skarr, she thinks he is sort of dumb and way too arrogant.

I liked these two characters quite a bit. Skarr and the other gladiators were pretty funny, how they didn’t understand freedom at all and only got competitions and winning. Skarr was very arrogant, though it was so funny that it was cute, instead of being condescending or brutish about it. This book had a lot more humor in it than a lot of Ruby Dixon’s other books. I laughed quite a bit, especially at Skarr’s antics and some of the things he said. He wasn’t always the brightest bulb in the box, but he was definitely lovable.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd. I love these two narrators for Ruby Dixon books, it is like coming home to something you know you will enjoy.

I am rounding this up to 2 stars, but this is more of 1.5 for me. (Also Aayla made an appearance so she automatically brings up the score)

I was excited to be going back to Not-Hoth, but sadly this book wasn't the best. To start Skarr was EXHAUSTING for 50% of this book, and it made it insufferable, there was moments where I laughed at him but overall I was not enjoying him. Vivi was bland. She does not stand out amongst the other girls, but one thing I did like about her was her attitude change when she dealt with Skarr, it was like he was so exhausting it broke her out of her shyness but only towards him.

The plot is very 'domestic' which isn't usually a problem but it was not working this time. This did nothing for the over arching story and I understand that not every book can build on it but a small piece would have been nice. Also the snow-cat plot line felt half-baked.

Honestly I was hoping the story was going to revolve more around Skarr and his struggle with surviving on an ice planet. I know for me had the plot focused on that it would have been way more interesting. The one small scene where he froze up was the most interesting part and it was so short lived. I would have LOVED to have seen this focused on since in terms of aliens he is the most unlikely to survive on this planet. Instead I got a plot around them both trying to "find" who they are since they are clones, and unfortunately I found this boring.

The spice was low, even with Skarr having TWO, also please don't ever put an ass-eating scene in again, I wanted to throw up.

And can I just say another round of edits would have been good because one sexy time scene made no sense and another scene involves Skarr removing Vivi's shoes by the fire only for two pages later having her shoes prevent him from taking her pants off?? Like inconsistent much.

Overall not the best, and I don't see myself re-reading this one, both characters aren't favorites of mine. Also Skarr lost points when he said Kyth was simple minded, I have had Kyth for a short time but I currently love him so I will not accept any criticism of him from the other characters haha.

Okay this was sooooo fun!!! I loved Vivi and Skarr - seeing their relationship progress was very sweet and made me laugh a lot. I’m also a sucker for a survivalist story and seeing the tribe start to integrate new building methods was great lmao. Can’t wait for the next one!!

More ice planet barbarian shenanigans. Bit of an anticlimactic ending though 🤷‍♀️ lot of drama is the first half but literally none in the second half

At first I had to laugh out loud so many times - that's exactly what I needed.
Skarr is totally ridiculous and then becomes a really pleasant guy.
Vivi is such a cool character from the start. Her shyness is extreme, but she still manages to put Skarr in his place - understandably. (You have to read it, he is adorably terrible.)
I love reading this series, pure escapism 🖤

Are these books always kind of similar? Yes. But are they comforting and usually pretty enjoyable? Also yes.

This one started off a little different at least! There’s couples who avoided or didn’t want resonance but I thought this would have a great pay off since she really doesn’t like him at first and he’s so cocky and unaware of society outside of gladiator rules.

Unfortunately I felt like the growth and thawing to him was way too fast. I think it should’ve been slower and had more moments of learning to be realistic or more satisfying.

Still, I always love when the hero is super into the heroine. And the setting by now is an old comfort.

It seems like these books will keep going forever! 😂

If you’ve read any others in the series you know what you’re getting. This was pretty much the same, the clone feels lost at the fact that she’s a clone and the H is very full of himself and just wanted a female. They grow closer and the H views the h as more than just a female and the h grows to appreciate the things that the H does for her.

I enjoyed that even tho the khui chose them early on in the story the physical need to mate wasn’t as intense in this book and it gave the MCs time to get to know each other a little better and at least liking each other instead of just giving in to the need.

I’m a sucker for romance and was a little saddened that there were no love words shared at the end, the H as always is smitten so that’s always nice. I’m more curious to read about the character who keeps needing new khui’s because his keeps dying. 🤔

god, i love when my monster smut gives with both hands.

and by that i mean, has at least two c*cks. one for each hand.

this was hot, quick, and easy to read, with the fun twist of a cold-blooded lizard man stuck on an ice planet, trying to fight anything that moves as a show of manly gladiatorial prowess.

cute, but nothing groundbreaking other than some rather ambitious DVP, but i’m knocking off a whole star for waiting until the epilogue to stick it in the butt.

3/5.

3.5 hearts

Surviving Skarr is the second book of the Ice Planet Clones series.  The good news is that if you have read a few books by Ruby Dixon set on the Ice Planet full of big blue horned aliens, you know what you are getting and you can skip around to any of the series in no specific order to enjoy.  You also know some of the main points in the story that have to be hit due to the khui (parasite that helps you survive on the planet and also choses your mate) and the complications of that.

Vivi wakes up on a planet with no recollection of her past, her name or how she got here in the first place.  The reason why is easy, she is a clone of a human that was jettisoned to an out of the way planet of ice with a handful of other clones on their way to market.  Rescued, she will need to make her way in this new world.  The thing is after she gets a khui to help her survive the planet, it decides Skarr is the the guy for her.  Granted he is attractive, but he is also obnoxious and loud, while Vivi is quiet and longs to be left alone.

This was the first book that went with a more cold blooded alien species as the hero, packing some different heat to play around with which made for some interesting sexy times.  Skarr is the clone of a splice and the only memories he has are of gladiator battles.  Learning to be a person is difficult for him as all he remembers is playing to the crowd in the gladiator pits.  With a little help from some of the other men, he devises a strategy to win Vivi as his mate, she is the best and he will prove to her that he is the best too.

I didn't think I'd grow to like Skarr in the beginning and it took a little time, but like most of the males in these books we usually get there.  As Skarr learns more and more about life on the Ice Planet, we see some more vulnerable sides to him and how much he really longed to have someone to care for and care for him.  There were some really tender moments in the book.  It is a cute story with more emotional obstacles more than any physical ones.  Not really any action or conflict in this story besides the relationship stuff.

Overall, this is great for readers of the series and another fun sweet story, but don't start here.

Narration:
Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd have done all of the Ice Planet books and have done them well.  I like how they do the voices and the dual PoV narration is great.  They really bring the stories to life and make them all the more fun.  The dialog really pops throughout the performances.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Performance: ★★★★
Character Separation: ★★★★
Diction: ★★★★★
Pacing/Flow: ★★★★
Sound Effects: none

There’s nothing I didn’t love about this book

I actually, come to think of it, the only disappointing thing about this book is that I read it in a day… most likely cause I have self control 🤦🏻‍♀️

It was such a good book, though! Skarr and Viví are my new favourite couple! I love them! 💕
I was giggling through most of the book, and found Skarr’s antics hilarious! Totally worth the wait!

This was enjoyably bonkers. I mean, I’m 35+ books into this series, I know what I’m in for when I start and this lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed how Skarr grew as a character and it was fun to read about Vivi being just so freaking competent. Did I read it in less than 24 hours? Yes. Did I laugh and also kind of shudder every time I read the word extruded? Also yes. Will I continue this series? Absolutely.

The next of the newly dropped clones are up and...they're an interesting couple. Skarr is very much a product of his upbringing/cloned memories. He's loud and he isn't afraid to tell everyone how incredible he is. He's a showman because that's what kept him alive as a gladiator. Vivi, on the other hand, is intensely shy and would prefer to not have the spotlight on her. She thinks all Skarr's over the top declarations are just him being a braggart and she's not thrilled to have to deal with him.

Plus PLUS the poor lady has very few memories to draw on. She doesn't know her own name and she gets glimpses of another life, but not enough to piece together who she was before. It takes time and the wise words of the ladies of Icehome before she starts to settle into her own skin and see how Skarr is in a similar predicament as she is. He might have memories, but he has the mindset of a gladiator on a planet where being a gladiator doesn't amount to much.

Let's just say it takes time and patience before Vivi is comfortable starting to get physical with Skarr. And Skarr has to adjust his thinking and figure out how to wow his crowd of one if he plans on winning her heart.

Missing memories, an anatomical difference (or two!), a surprisingly sweet gladiator once he got over his need to ham it up, and a lady who has some hidden skills when it comes to surviving in unforgiving terrain. I LOVE spending time with the Icehome crew (and all the barbarians!) and watching them finding their place on this world.

Vivian wakes up on Not Hoth and quickly realizes she’s a clone (as the whole series name and all suggests) and she’s not happy about it. She finds out all that comes with living on an alien ice planet, the khui, she meets some of the residents of the planet, and gets to know the others who traveled with her. She meets Skarr who is also new to the planet, and this gladiator alien is used to fighting and assumes that is what will be expected of him here.

Skarr is very full of himself in an obnoxious but equally naive kind of way and so I found his character just to be funny because of how obliviously confident he was in everything (very much he knows he’s the best, he deserves the best etc). Skarr is ready to learn everything he can about the rules of the new planet and is convinced there has to be some game at play in it all and there must be a prize.

Skarr and Vivian resonate very early on but they have a while to go since they’re both figuring out their new surroundings first. Vivian has some survival skills and feels very comfortable being on the icy planet (reminds her of Alaska, she wants to help an injured snow cat). She even brings skiing to the planet which really incorporates in a new way to get around! Some of the parts in this one were slow, but I just always have a good enough time with Ruby Dixon books. The audiobook is out now for this

Don‘t judge me, i‘m a sucker for the Ice Planet Himbos.

Okay, Skarr is insufferable at first but he really grows on you. And Vivi has quite the mouth on her for being so „shy“.

I know every book is basically the same story: A human and an alien meet on a cold planet, their symbionts decide they fit well together and make them so horny they won‘t be able to resist each other and in the end they fall in love, even if the human didn‘t like the alien at first. But at the same time every story is unique and whenever i finish another one of those novels i end up having a new favourite alien man.

I just know that i can count on Ruby Dixon when i need something light and fun to read.

I enjoyed this one much more than the first in this series and I think that’s because there was no expectation; the characters all start from a blank slate for us. Skarr is so stinking adorable and Vivi is not only relatable but likable as the awkward shy loner.

The best part, though, is how expertly Dixon paints the picture of the clueless male trying to woo the unintentionally difficult, self conscious female 🤌🏼

Forever my fav go-to comfort reads

I bet he’s preening inside, my ridiculous peacock. It makes me smile.

I would have never thought this bragging, loud, conceited alien would become my favorite but here we are and Skarr is definitely one of my favorites. They way he loves Vivi and becomes what she needs is beautiful. The way this alien hypes her up and lets everyone know how great she is was both funny and so darn cute. Funny because poor Viv didn’t want any attention.

And the extra Liz and Raahosh parts were amazing!! To see this girl dad with his three girls and how Skarr wanted all girls too because girl dad’s are the best was the cutest.

Skarr: the acquired taste

NGL I was a bit concerned when Skarr didn’t pick up on how obnoxious he was in the first few chapters. He was like Ashtar on steroids - all self-confidence with a less than impressive intellect. He grows on you though, as he grows on Vivi.
Vivi was a nice shift in the shy-girl trope, because she was a shy goth girl. I’m just bummed she didn’t try to dye all her clothing black.

Spice: 4/5

So while I enjoyed it. It wasn’t great. I was disappointed. This was whiplash with a 180 and I feel the story was honestly rushed.

Overall, it could and should have been better. This just felt more like she was phoning it in.

The couple is not endearing at first and then you love them but then it’s just ah yes all the good angst we were leading up to.. no. So 180. And just buttoned up nicely. If I were being truly honest.. she phoned it the fuck in with this book.

I liked this. The MMC is an arrogant peacock of himbo and surprisingly I liked him. Ruby has a way of making me understand characters I wouldn’t usually go for. I look forward to the next installment in this world.

P.S. Ruby for the love of god tell us what happened to the people from the empty pods! 😭 That was mentioned in Flor’s book. We know one is with the MMC from the first book of this series, but what about the other two? I was thinking this book would have some insight, but no dice.

You remember the jocks in school who were so full of themselves, so in love with their prowess and skill? That's Skarr. And while you wouldn't think that would be the guy for you, Skarr proved us all wrong. He's a braggart because that's what kept him alive in the gladiator ring. He had to be the best. But being the best is all he knew, so the learning curve was both funny and moving. Great read.

Another gem from Ruby Dixon! Her books are my easy read, comfort books and this one is no different. I loved Skarr, obnoxious males with huge egos are kind of my favorite bc they always come around in the end and you realize it’s all bravado and they just need lots of love. And similar to the 1st Icehome Clones book, I really enjoyed the exploration of - what does it mean to be a clone, who am I if not the original. This book was a quick, easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
