Owen Han has a cool culinary background! He grew up in Italy learning to cook from his grandma and then came to America where his dad, who is Chinese, encouraged him to share his cultural foods with his friends. As an adult, he studied nutrition at USC and finally became a YouTube chef! I am so impressed with the wide variety of sandwiches he and his coauthor Rick Rodgers came up with. I do think he likes stronger flavors than I do- I especially learned that I do not like Dijon mustard! But overall these were tasty and fun. Here’s what I made:
🍯 Honeyed Ham and Brie Baguette- I loved how easy this was. Good flavor combo but also honey is good on most things
🍗 Turkey Crunch Sandwich- the frico crisps were tricky to make so I was proud when I was done. Loved them with the pesto!
🐖 Cubano Sandwich- this was our favorite (once I tried it with yellow mustard!) The pork tenderloin was marinated in citrus and was tender and flavorful and was just so tasty with the Swiss and pickle! And I don’t even like pickle!
🥚 Japanese Egg Sando- this was the worst one and I’ll save you some trouble- never put a soft-boiled whole egg in the middle of a sandwich! It looks cute in the book but in reality now you have liquid yolk everywhere when you really just wanted egg salad. Also, let’s not try to elevate this with Dijon. Egg salad should be comfort food!

I used to watch this guy’s videos all the time. The recipes in this book, for some reason just seem a lot less interesting than his actual videos. I think if you know nothing about food, then this book might be interesting, but I wouldn’t recommend it above something like Americas Test Kitchen or Mark Bittman for learning to cook. Also, no hoagie roll recipe or guidance on that. I did copy a few recipes I found interesting(chicken cheesesteak, al antico vinaio mortadella sandwich), but I would’ve been disappointed if I’d paid for this book, as I got it from the library.

Stacked... the author does a great job of turning simple recipes into masterpiece sandwiches. I've tried a few of the sandwiches, and they are delicious! While reading, I appreciate the inclusion of his family history to develop the tone of the book and rationale on why he uses certain ingredients or swaps items occasionally. Love the lighthearted humor and passion for cooking. Definitely several new to me sandwiches. I would have enjoyed seeing more images of finished or in-progress sandwiches.

Finally, a great sandwich book! This is well-organized, well-researched and full of great stories from the author. Funny thing is that this book came out almost at the same time Owen's buddy Salt Hank released his first cookbook, but they don't even come close in quality.

A cookbook by a social media influencer. It’s full of sandwich recipes. Nothing new or different. For someone who uses photos & videos, it is disappointing that Owen skipped having photos of all recipes.
