Lacey Dearie is a writer from Ayrshire, Scotland. She has lived her whole life in the Ayrshire countryside and sets many of her stories in this area, or in the places where her extended family live.
On leaving school in 1995, she chose an entrepreneurial career path, which later led to a job in book-keeping before working for over a decade as a paralegal. She also ran a small perfumery for a short time and has worked as a mystery shopper since 2007, partly because she likes the glamour of being a spy, although it's actually super boring and there's a lot of paperwork involved.
She returned to study in her 30s, undertaking a BA in Arts & Humanities with the Open University in Scotland, where she gained a distinction in creative writing. She has also studied Comparative and World Literature with Harvard's online program, Harvard X and History of Religion, specifically magical beliefs in the Middle Ages with the Universitat de Barcelona.
Since 2002, she has written for a variety of publications, both in print and online. She is the author of 39 cat sleuth novellas, 2 chick-lit novels, 3 stories about sexually active foods and a blog named Rock Paper Spirit. She has also written a Chaka Demus and Pliers tribute musical, just to pass the time.
She has been an associate member of the Cat Writers Association since 2018.
Leger is a cat who lives comfortably with his humans Annabelle and her husband Hugh, and his best friend, Bob the dog. Leger wants to know what his "purpose" is. When Hugh is attacked and injured Leger decides to become a detective. He follows clues and with the advice of a seagull discovers evidence that leads to the identity of the attacker.
This is a fun short novel about a cat in a Scottish house who likes the dog better than a respectable cat should. The pair turn detective after their owner is harmed by someone unknown.
I found the tale slightly repetitive, but this may help young readers to follow the trail. I would read more in this series. This is an unbiased review.
This short mystery is unique in that it is told entirely through the eyes and voice of the animals, who do the investigating and find the perpetrators of the crime on their own. While the animals do have the ability to communicate with each other, their ability to communicate with humans is unreliable at best, and normally limited to the special human they are bonded with. The pets here are very much like our own pets, but with the ability to think and reason at the level of what I would consider an average teen.
Leger the cat lives with his people Annabella and Hugh, and Bob the dog.
As they wait for Hugh to come home, Bob senses something is wrong and asks Leger to go check on him. Leger goes to find that Hugh has been seriously hurt and is bleeding. Together, Leger and Bob alert the humans and Annabella's niece Carole goes with them to find Hugh.
While Annabella goes with Hugh in the hospital, Carole feeds and waters the pets, then leaves the TV on for company. Bob mops about, worrying about Hugh while Leger half-heartedly watches the TV. It turns out the show on TV is a detective show, and the situation that happened in the show mirrors what happened to Hugh. Leger watches with growing interest as the 'detective' tracks down clues to solve the mystery and find who was responsible. Leger was hooked! He knew he could do the same thing and find out what had happened to Hugh. Bob seems doubtful, but Leger will not be dissuaded.
What follows is a delightful little romp about town, as our Cat Sleuth sets out to discover what had happened to Hugh that night. Along with his gal pal Ginger, Leger follows up on information from the new tabby in the neighborhood Winter and Joe the seagull - while still managing to find time for his artistic endeavors and a bit of indulgence in catnip.
I have never read this author before, but based on what a fun read this book was I will be reading more of this series.
I was wondering when a cat sleuth mystery was going to come out and hey presto, it's here! Fortunately, this short story is by one of my favourite indie authors and so when I downloaded it, I knew I was going to be in for a treat.
This story really is quite clever and very funny. Leger is quite the ladies cat, who indulges in a spot of recreational catnip (but he isn't addicted) whose best friend is a Labrador called Bob. Leger is quite liberal you know. Anyway, this story is sharply observed and when seen through the eyes of a cat, hilarious in places. Leger needs more out of life than just easy kitties and cat-drug use and so he turns his paw to a spot of detective work when his neighbour is mugged.
This is a truly original story and very well written. Leger is a hoot (his artistic endeavors had me in stitches)and the characterisation spot on. It really did not take long to identify with the main characters and engage with their adventures, and thus created a page-turner. I hope this is going to be a series because I see a successful animated TV show in this ...
I believe I'm half gone on a clever cat called Leger. This is a quirky and adorable little book that everyone should enjoy. I recommend for all ages. Why don't you find a friend to read it to (or with) today?
This is the first in the series about Leger the cat.
He lives with a dog and two humans. When one of the humans gets hurt, Leger decides to investigate, figuring that cats can be detectives as well as humans can. So he talks to all the other cats and finds out that one may have some information through a friend, that is a sea gull. But when Leger snoops some more, he and his new side kick figure out who hurt their human. Now just to get the humans to get the idea.
I don't know if these books are for younger people or adults. They are short and easy to read. Just the kind of story that you can read in an evening.
'Leger - Cat Sleuth' is a delightful short story in which a cat takes on the role of detective to solve a mystery that unfolds very close to his home.
It's written with good humor and clever characterization of the protagonist and his animal friends, feline and otherwise, who help him find the pieces of the puzzle and find the culprit he seeks.
Suitable for any reader from young adult upwards, this story is a short read but contains enough charm and interest to engage a reader and entertain their imagination.
Leger leads a good life with his family: Annabella (his person), her husband Hugh, and Hugh's dog Bob. Leger, however, is bored. While he does pursue some artistic endeavors, he craves excitement in his life. Leger gets more than he bargained for when Hugh is attacked and robbed outside, sending the household into an uproar. Leger takes it upon himself to solve the crime. To do so, he enlists the aid of Bob, other cats in the neighborhood, and even a pesky seagull named Joe.
Not a weighty story, by any means, but sometimes a cute, light read is just the ticket.
this was my first for this author. Wonderful cozy novella with Ledger a snoopy black cat out to solve an attack on his elderly man master Hugh. This was a cute funny cat-sleuth story of Ledger along with his Labrador roommate & a group of talking cats & Joe the pigeon. Only some of the human masters were able to communicate with their animals. Anyone who’s a fan of cozy mysteries will enjoy this one & I will continue to read her work.
