Have You Seen This Girl

Rate this book
Fans of Courtney Summers and Tess Sharpe will devour this standalone YA thriller following a nonbinary teen investigating a series of copycat murders targeting girls in their small town—murders based on their serial killer dad’s MO.

Another girl has gone missing in Cardinal Creek.

Sid knows their dad didn’t do it—this time. He’s currently serving a life sentence for the five girls he murdered ten years ago. Girls whose bodies he dumped into the lake. The same lake where June Hargrove was just found. And while Sid’s dad couldn’t have done it, suspicion is now directed at Sid. The only person who doesn’t suspect Sid is the new girl, Mavis—as long as Sid doesn’t let her find out about their past.

But Sid has another secret: They’re being haunted by the ghosts of the five girls their father killed. Except now there are six. And unlike the others, June isn’t content to just whisper in Sid’s ear. She wants them to find out who’s killing again, especially as another girl goes missing. If Sid wants any chance of solving the current disappearances, they’re going to have to face what their father did—or risk being haunted forever.

Critically acclaimed author of Who I Was with Her, Nita Tyndall delivers a page-turning thriller that will captivate fans of Sadie and Monday's Not Coming.

When I’m reading a mystery/thriller I’m looking for it to either be a hunting for clues or a heart pounding creepy story, this book wasn’t really either of those things. It tried! and mildly succeeded in that I was interested enough to keep reading. But the crux of the book relied on the MC’s desire not to be defined by their father, yet as a reader I don’t really feel like I know much about them/their personality outside of their father. And the final reveal lacked any real intrigue or drama!

A fast-paced, YA murder mystery that sees the nonbinary daughter of a convicted murder trying to solve a copy cat when queer girls start turning up dead in the same manner that her father killed. Twisty with great queer rep, this was an entertaining read and good on audio. Looking forward to reading more by this author! Perfect for fans of Holly Jackson.

This story follows the child of a small town serial killer. Their dad killed five teenage girls ten years ago. Although Sid was a child themselves and had nothing to do with it, the town still cannot look them in the eye. Then, more girls go missing. They turn up dead. And it is an obvious copycat of Sid’s dad.

I loved the focus of the story on Sid and their personal development and experience of the situation. Also loved all the characters and their friendships!! The book was way too short though, I feel like adding more to the story really could’ve fleshed out the mystery. Currently I would not call this a small town murder mystery story, it felt more like something going on in the background. Also the ending was lowkey unsatisfying. Other than that I enjoyed listening to it!

I love that The Blob (1988) got a little cameo.

My third attempt at Nita Tyndall.

And my opinion stays the same. The premises are good, the romances are underwhelming and the characters are meh.

The mystery itself was pretty interesting, but the build up could have been just .... More.

Also I am very picky about super neutral elements in these types of books. And here it was not my favorite.

The aspect I really did like tough was the focus on remembering victims, and not only as victims but also to remember them as people and who they were before being subjected to tragedy.

This is the second book I have read in the past few days where the mc is the child of a killer who ends up being the person of interest who is communicating somehow with their father’s past victims. This one, let me say, was sone better than the other one. With this book though there were some instances where I felt like it was slow and sadly my rating wasn’t higher because I felt like the reveal of the killer at the end was done poorly, as in the character ends up being some who was mentioned in passing and wasn’t someone who really was attached to the plot somehow

This fast paced thriller had me hooked from the start, right to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed following Sid's journey to find out who the copycat serial killer based on their dad was.

The audiobook narrator was also spot on!

Have you seen this girl is the epitome of a small book that packs a big punch. I flew through this and not just because it was short but because it was impossible to put down.

Gut wrenching, tense and utterly riveting, this was a superbly written thriller made all the more impressive for how much it achieved in so few pages.

If you’re a fan of Prodigal Son (a show that deserved a season three or A Good Girl's Guide to Murder)I think you’d enjoy this.

This was a thrill! I read this book in practically one sitting, it had me hooked on the mystery and eager to find out the who and the why behind all of the attacks.

Sid lives in a town where they are infamously known for being the child of a serial killer…and the murders have started up again. The catch? Sid’s dad is in prison, so it can’t be him…but the method of killing is the exact same. Did their Dad have an accomplice or is this a copycat murderer? Some in the town think maybe Sid is behind it…

I think Tyndall built up an intriguing mystery and at no point did I guess who it was. There were a lot of red herrings! I was certain it was going to be the Sheriff, who was an accomplice and threatened the life of Sid to keep the Dad silent.

I do think, while the killer did make sort of sense at the end, that we did have more build up and hints towards it being hi, as it did feel like it came out of nowhere. And while I understand the motivation I did think it was a little loose and in someways didn’t make sense.

I liked that we had flashbacks to the original set of killings and got to see from the perspective of the girls who were murdered. I think Tyndall made a good point within this book about true crime and the voyeurism of audiences. Once these people are murdered, that is what they become ‘murdered girls’ and it is not popular to see the girls for who they are, instead of what was done for them.

It was interesting having this story being told through the perspective of Sid, the child of a murderer. We got to see Sid struggle with how to deal with this being a part of their public identity, and how they reckon that with what they know about themselves. I do wish we got a bit more of Sid’s actual personality, the book spent so much time telling us how they are not like their father and yet it didn’t really show? We also didn’t know much about their father aside from the murdering part.

I liked how we also got to see Sid explore their gender, and how they don’t feel they’re either female or male, they are just them. There was a good discussion of pronouns, where Sid is presented an opportunity they haven’t before to think about them. This was interesting, and while they preferred the term nonbinary and they/them, they are also not comfortable with those pronouns being used in a public setting. I feel like this is a good representation to the nuanced journey individuals can take on discovering themselves. However, I do also question the use of she in the blurb of the book?

The romance fell a little flat for me and I couldn’t really see why they liked each other at the end. They spent most of the book lying to each other, or having to keep secrets because the other person didn’t want to be involved. There was an unfortunate lack of chemistry too. I think Sid had better chemistry with Sally — that’s a romance I could’ve gotten behind!

I loved the characters, but this is a book that I wanted to like more than I did. It got too repetitive and all the mysterious or interesting bits (supernatural or not, romantic or not) were not explored enough for me.

Tekrardan merhabalar!

Thank you to Harper360YA for the arc in return for an honest review.

This was a good YA thriller about a serial killers child investigating a copycats crimes. It was a short book that could be read in one sitting. I loved Sid and it was really interesting to read from the perspective of someone shunned by the small community themselves. I liked the budding relationship with Mavis and Sid and again they felt like teenagers with their arguments and forgiveness. I also liked the friendship with Sally and it all felt natural within rekindling.

I think the pacing could have worked a little better and almost a little too much time was focused on the set up and guilt rather than investigating. I also thought the ending worked really well. I would love to say it would be nice to have the adults in the story actually think but it was very realistic and I think the characters had made peace with that.

Many thanks to Harper360YA for the digital review copy.

Having read three of Nita Tyndall's books now, I think it's safe to conclude they're a really good writer. Especially since all of their books have been so different from each other.

This is their first YA thriller and I was drawn in from the start. The writing is so engaging, making me finish the book in almost one sitting. Sid is such an intriguing main character, because at points, you're really not sure if you can trust them, but you also sympathize with them so much.

simple and basic plot but the characters, setting and vibes of this book are what made it so good. a non binary teen being haunted by the ghosts of the girls their father murdered, while trying to solve the mystery of the girls going missing at present day. the killer was obvious so it wasn’t really a ‘mystery/thriller’ BUT the whole vibe and aesthetic and the characters just made it so good.

An introspective, character-driven murder mystery. The story is pretty straightforward. We're taken deep into Sid's thoughts, where she's being haunted by the girls her father murdered ten years ago. It's concise, but the execution, writing, and characterization stood out for me.

I should have saved this one for Halloween! It was mysterious and intriguing, while also being pretty introspective. You’ve got all these disappearances/murders of young girls happening, all while the protagonist is also grappling with their nonbinary identity. I’ve certainly never read anything like that before, and it was balanced super well. I enjoyed it.

this was seriously so good!! it was really easy to read and it hooked me right away. i loved sid so much, and that they weren’t your stereotypical character who would solve a mystery, and i thought it was rly good non binary and queer representation!! also their dad being the serial killer who committed all the murders in the past was genius and added so much more depth to the story.

This was so good I finished it in one sitting. I’m not giving it 5 stars because the narrative was a bit repetitive. I understand it’s in the pov of a teenager obsessing over the murders in her small town but I still didn’t like all the repeated thoughts and dialogue. I didn’t see the twist coming, which is refreshing in a mystery novel as a lot of twists are commonly used.

I love a queer thriller and this one had me hooked. I have already failed at trying to write reviews in a timely manner though and so I've forgotten some of the details.
