The Lightkeeper's Woman

Their Grand Passion Had Burned Too Brightly To Survive

But faced with wedding another, Alanna Patterson was determined to reignite any smoldering embers of desire Caleb Pitt might still harbor for her. Would her brawny captain, now a solitary lighthouse keeper, rescue her from a sea of regrets? Or had tragedy both public and private sunk any hopes for a lasting love?

Caleb Pitt had once believed love was eternal as the sea, for Alanna Patterson had promised him forever. But despite her vow, she'd left him to drown in disgrace. Now, years later, she'd reappeared on a storm-tossed wave, beautiful as a siren…and just as seductive!

Before Mary Burton wrote dazzling suspense, she did historical romance! The Lightkeeper's Woman was delightful, a wonderful sea side second chance at love story

This is a unique story of second chances. As the story opens, we learn that Caleb Pitt and Alanna Patterson are in love and planning to marry. Caleb wants them to marry immediately but Alanna says her father has planned an elaborate wedding for his only child. Caleb is uneasy but leaves to captain another trip.

The story resumes two years later. Caleb Pitt has been disgraced for surviving the explosion on his ship, Intrepid, while 23 others on board perished. At the inquest, he was reprimanded for sloppy maintenance that lead to the disaster. No one will hire him to captain a ship and he has become the light keeper on a remote island.

Alanna is trying to bring a box from her father to Caleb; he wants nothing from daughter or father. In spite of a raging storm, Alanna makes it to the lighthouse and sees Caleb. She immediately decides that she’s made a mistake and wants to leave. The storm continues and they are confined together for the duration.

I liked the fact that there wasn’t an excess of moaning about the past. Both have matured since their last meeting; each knows something that the other person needs to know in order to have a complete picture of those shattering events 2 years before.

This is an engrossing tale that kept me glued to my chair for the complete novel. This is my first Mary Burton novel and I enjoyed it a great deal. She did a wonderful job of conveying the loneliness of the island.

Decent book. It was a quick & easy read, but I really didn't feel anything for the characters. And the last chapter or two of the book seemed completely unnecessary. The book could've ended well without that last twist. It just made me dislike the hero because his actions seemed really immature.

But I enjoyed the setting. You don't find too many historical romances that take place on the east coast, especially in Virginia and North Carolina. So that was pleasant to read about places I know well.

Sincerely, this book is one of those books you can read over and over again. Even though it was one of the first books I ever read and loved in the romance genre, I still love it. I picked it out of a used book box in a thrift shop, it cost me only $.75. You can't go wrong with this book if your in the mood for a romance of two hateful lovers who uncover the truth isn't the truth and only a fabricated lie.
