Gabrielle is a flame haired, fire hearted French princess who dreams of becoming a Valkyrie warrior queen like her Viking ancestors from Normandy. Sent to Paris to learn the proper etiquette for a future French queen, she is called home to le Château de Beaufort for a forced marriage to a man she loathes when her father the king’s precarious health takes a sudden turn for the worse.
Chivalrous, solitary knight Sir Bastien de Landuc suffers an impossible love for Gabrielle, the unattainable princess he can never have. Without a title of nobility, he is ineligible to compete in the Yuletide Joust for her hand in marriage, despite his unparalleled equestrian skills and inimitable swordsmanship.
Yet, Yuletide wishes for a wondrous winter solstice in the glorious Crystal Castle might make impossible dreams come true.
Can the valiant knight win the coveted hand of his Viking Valkyrie?

Having enjoyed Jennifer Ivy Walker's earlier works, "The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven" series, I was looking forward to the publication of her most recent book, Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle. I was pleasantly surprised. Anyone who like historical literature, romance, or magical realism will adore this mesmerizing story set in mediaeval France.
Jennifer Ivy Walker weaves a captivating tale of forbidden love, chivalry, and coming of age in medieval France with her novel Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle. Set against the backdrop of the rugged Breton coast in the late Middle Ages, the story follows fiery Princess Gabrielle of Finistère and her growing affection for the kingdom's Master of Horse, Sir Bastien de Landuc. With Walker's signature blend of historical detail, magical realism, and swoon-worthy romance, Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle transports readers to a bygone era and leaves them eager to experience more of its enchanting world.
The novel opens by introducing Gabrielle, heir to the throne of Finistère, as she stands gazing pensively at the turbulent Atlantic from the ramparts of her father's castle, Le Château de Beaufort. King Guillemin's declining health and France's restrictive Salic Law concerning female inheritance have compelled him to hurriedly arrange his daughter's marriage. He summons Gabrielle home from Paris to wed on the winter solstice, with the champion of an upcoming joust to claim her hand. Among the suitors vying for Gabrielle's hand and throne is the nefarious Ugolin Cauchon, le Vicomte de Nantes, whose allegiance to notorious pirate Balthazar threatens the kingdom's security.
Also in attendance is Sir Bastien de Landuc, the valiant and skilled Master of Horse who has secretly admired Gabrielle since her days receiving riding lessons as a girl. Though a match made Gabrielle and Bastien's social positions seems impossible, an undeniable spark ignites between them as they prepare to embark on a ride along the windswept Breton coast. Walker deftly establishes an atmosphere of uncertainty around Gabrielle's future and the tensions threatening her father's realm, while also hinting at the blossoming romance between two characters destined to defy convention.
From here, the narrative delves more deeply into each protagonist's backstory and motivations. Readers learn of Gabrielle's dream to become a mighty warrior queen like her Viking forebears, and how the constraints of her gender and station frustrate this ambition. In vividly portrayed flashbacks, Walker shows young Bastien's arrival at Le Château de Beaufort as a page and his transformation into a peerless knight under the tutelage of the legendary Sir Lancelot. These insights bring nuanced layers to Gabrielle and Bastien's characterizations while also building fascination around key secondary characters.
When the formidable guests, invited by King Guillemin to arrange the Yuletide Joust, are introduced in a dramatic scene, Walker displays her talent for complex political intrigue and atmosphere. Tensions simmer between those who would see Gabrielle wed for her father's kingdom's protection and alliance, versus those with more opportunistic ambitions. The author balances these uncertainties with upbeat interludes like Gabrielle and Bastien's exhilarating ride along the coast, showcasing the hopeful spirit at the novel's core despite looming dangers.
By the middle of Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle, preparations for the Christmas tournament are in full swing with the assistance of Sir Lancelot and other prestigious knights. Yet forces are also marshaling against Le Château de Beaufort, with the Vicomte de Nantes harboring increasingly hostile intentions after his bid for Gabrielle's hand is denied. Walker heightens suspense through the growing threat of pirate attack and escalating conflicts between noble houses. She also begins to reveal secrets from characters' pasts that will have profound bearing on the story's resolution. All the while, the unspoken connection between Gabrielle and Bastien intensifies in their covert meetings.
The climactic jousting scenes not only showcase bravery and skill-at-arms, but see noble ambitions and desires clash in high-stakes drama. Walker proves a master storyteller as events careen towards an unpredictable conclusion, with beloved characters facing life-threatening dangers and agonizing choices. Medieval details like heraldic banners, styles of combat, and the harrowing injuries sustained only enhance the visceral experience. At the same time, the author continues imbuing layers of emotion, honor, and adversity into her protagonists' star-crossed relationship against the backdrop of kingly power struggles and divine intervention.
In the book's denouement, long-buried secrets are revealed and Gabrielle's future seems as uncertain as ever even after a champion claims victory. But Jennifer Ivy Walker leaves readers with a satisfying sense of catharsis, justice for misdeeds, and hard-earned happy endings - not to mention threads for future adventures in her captivating world. Her way with words transports the imagination while values like courage, sacrifice and following one's heart triumph in the end.
Throughout Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle, the meticulous historical research and attention to cultural details bring a tactile sense of medieval France to life. Descriptions of the rugged Breton coastline, lavish feasts, clothing, architecture, and period vernacular immerse the reader, never feeling heavy-handed. Walker has clearly crafted her story with care, passion and respect for the time period. Magical elements like prophetic dreams, the ethereal Crystal Castle, and mystical figures like the Lady Ghislaine of Brocéliande add an element of the fantastical without detracting from realism.
Characterization is also a strength - from the independent-minded but vulnerable Princess Gabrielle, to the upstanding yet conflicted Sir Bastien, no one feels like a caricature. Supporting players like the villainous Ugolin, the noble Sir Lancelot, and the ailing King Guillemin are just as richly developed. The author understands what motivates people and deftly builds their backstories. Romantic tension unfolds organically rather than insta-love, and choices feel grounded even when magic intervenes. Readers will fall for these characters just as much as they do each other.
Jennifer Ivy Walker's prose flows beautifully, whether depicting sword fights and journeys along the pounding shore, or the most intimate of scenes. Her storytelling gifts are on full display with how skillfully she handles complex plots, political maneuvering and the emotional cores of complex individuals. There are always new discoveries to be made with each re-read of Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle, leaving fans eager to reunite with this enchanting medieval world, magical realism tales, and unforgettable characters once more. The novel is sure to enthrall fans of historical fiction, romance, and magical medieval settings for many winters to come.
An Enchanting Yuletide Journey in the Crystal Castle
As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisper, thoughts naturally turn to all things cozy, comforting and festive. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than curling up by the fire with a captivating new tale of magic, adventure and romance set during the most magical time of year? Jennifer Ivy Walker's latest novel Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle provides the perfect wintry escape, transporting readers to a snowy medieval kingdom where impossible dreams may just come true.
From its gorgeously detailed opening chapters introducing the splendid yet seaswept Breton coast, Walker sweeps audiences effortlessly into her storytelling. We meet the headstrong Princess Gabrielle, who longs for freedom and battles against her destiny trapped by the strictures of a male-dominated society. As the only child of ailing King Guillemin, pressure mounts for her to secure an advantageous marriage before it's too late. Yet Gabrielle's adventurous spirit yearns to follow in the footsteps of her brave Viking foremothers as a shieldmaiden, not a political pawn.
Alongside Gabrielle stands her steadfast champion, the nobly devoted Sir Bastien. As Master of the royal stables, he has admired Gabrielle from afar since their spirited youth together, shaping her into the formidable equestrienne she is today. Bastien's love and loyalty knows no bounds, yet his status as a landless knight seems to doom any hopes of winning Gabrielle's hand. Against this backdrop of longing and limitation, King Guillemin declares a grand Christmas tournament - the victor shall wed his cherished daughter.
From these promising opening scenes, Walker immerses readers in a vivid wintertime kingdom brought to life through sensorial details. Rolling Breton hills dotted with purple heather and stately stone castles perched above crashing azure waves all set the stage. Regal courts and cozy halls filled with the scent of mulled wine and evergreen boughs transport audiences straight into the heart of the story. Walker paints every landscape and character with such care, it's easy to feel part of Gabrielle and Bastien's spirited adventure.
While richly imagined settings bring the world to life, it's Walker's gifted characterization that forms the heart of this tale. From spirited Gabrielle's fire and independence to Bastien's quiet strength, honor and deep devotion - these protagonists feel three-dimensional, real and easy to root for from the first page. Their private longing gazes and playful rapport cultivated since youth ring profoundly true, hinting at deeper cares yet to unfold. Surrounding players like the indomitable Sir Lancelot and cunning Prince Kaherdin add vibrant layers, keeping intrigue high as machinations spread.
As the tournament draws closer and threats to Gabrielle's security escalate, Walker smoothly ups narrative tension without losing sight of emotional throughlines. Her vivid action sequences carrying readers into fields of honour showcase skilled storytelling marrying pulse-pounding spectacle and stakes and tender, hopeful undercurrents. It's clear Walker loves these characters as much as any fan, crafting their journey with care, empathy and attention to nuanced detail. Readers can't help but cheer them on through every challenge, victory and revelation.
At its heart, this captivating novel champions themes of courage, sacrifice, loyalty and fighting for hopes against all odds - resonating messages as timeless as the season itself. Walker celebrates the indomitable spirit and hidden wells of strength within us all, no matter our station, that can overcome even "impossible" barriers. Her tale reminds there are few bonds as powerful as true love persevering through any trial. It's no wonder readers find themselves thoroughly enchanted, immersed and uplifted by this magical adventure's journey to its crowning finale.
Though Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle comes to a perfectly satisfying conclusion, fans may find themselves reluctant to leave Walker's crystalline kingdom and characters behind. It's a story with staying power to return to again and again like a treasured friend, finding new richness with each reading. Her evocative storytelling brings medieval pageantry, honour-bound knights and fairy tale romance swirling together in a whirl of magic any season would be lucky to find under the tree. Most of all, Walker's novel reminds that sometimes the biggest dreams really can come true, if we simply believe.
On a bleak winter night, escaping to the warming glow of Walker's imagination provides the perfect remedy. Her latest folktale brings light, hope and joy in spades - gifts surely worth treasuring in these darker days. As comforting as hot cocoa by a fire, Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle offers everything loved about the most heartwarming traditions of the holidays. It's a story to cozy up with for the sheer pleasure of becoming enchanted all over again, and find the spirit of possibilities renewed. Readers wishing for a little festive magic need look no further than Jennifer Ivy Walker's extraordinary Crystal Castle this Yuletide season.
This book is a perfect representation of historical fiction at its finest! The author grabs your interest from the very first page with beautiful background descriptions and glorious world building, you can feel yourself getting pulled into the pages.
I was really drawn to Gabrielle's character, she is born a Princess and bares the weight of all those responsibilities but she is a true viking warrior at heart and soul! She is not a push over and I love her sassy attitude! Bastian a knight without a title is hopelessly in love in Gabrielle and he will not stop until he gets the chance for them to be together and truthfully nothing is better than Forbidden love! The story progress is clear and steady and I was extremely satisfied with the beautiful ending! I loved this book and if you enjoy a great historical fiction read, I highly recommend this book to you!
The romance and adventure of Medieval times jump off the pages of this fun, page-turning novel. Sir Bastien de Landuc and Gabrielle are fierce, loyal characters and I loved reading how their love story played out. A joust, Sir Lancelot's knights and the trio of mothers were some of the highlights for me. I highly recommend pouring yourself a cup of herbal tea and enjoy a few hours in Yuletide splendor. I received an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was skeptical to read this book because I am not a huge fan of romance. I'm glad that I took a chance and read something out of my comfort zone. I loved medieval world and characters that Jennifer created. I'll definitely be checking out more of her work. Highly recommended.
First, I want to thank Jennifer Ivy Walker and Happily Booked PR for the change to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was a sweet but engaging story. I love the ending and it make it wrap up so nicely! It’s a fantasy love story as a good one at that. I felt engulfed in the world and the details make me see the castles, the beach, the cave, and everything other aspect of this story! This was solid read at 4/5 stars and highly recommend for fantasy romance readers to pick up!
Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle: A Romantic Medieval Fantasy Come to Life
Jennifer Ivy Walker has crafted another captivating medieval fantasy romance with her latest novel, Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle. Set in 13th century Brittany, France, the story immerses readers in a lushly detailed world of knights, princesses, castles, and courtly intrigue. At its heart is an impossible love between spirited Princess Gabrielle and devoted knight Sir Bastien that comes alive through Walker's masterful storytelling. After reading this emotionally resonant tale, it's clear why Walker has gained acclaim for her ability to blend romance, adventure, fantasy, and history into page-turning stories that stay with readers long after the final page.
The novel opens by introducing Gabrielle, the feisty flame-haired princess of Finistère who dreams of becoming a fearsome Viking shield maiden like her ancestors. Unfortunately, as a woman in medieval France, she is subject to the oppressive "Salic law" which denies her the right to rule. Her father King Guillemin is gravely ill, forcing him to seek a husband for Gabrielle so their kingdom does not fall into the wrong hands upon his death. Sir Bastien has secretly admired Gabrielle since childhood, watching over her as Master of the royal stables. Though a highly skilled knight, he lacks noble title and is thus ineligible to compete for her hand.
The stage is set for drama as King Guillemin declares a Christmas joust - the champion will wed Gabrielle. Among the competitors are those with more politically motivated designs on the kingdom, including the sinister Ugolin whose father allies with pirates. From the first chapter, Walker pulls readers deep into her vividly realized world. The castle settings and medieval social hierarchies feel utterly authentic, thanks to her evident research. French terms and place names add local flavor without detracting from the smooth narrative flow.
At the center of it all are the star-crossed lovers Gabrielle and Bastien, whose longing gazes and admiration for one another's skills are subtly and believably developed since childhood. Walker excels at creating profoundly relatable characters despite their fantastical medieval world. Both heroes strive for courage, honor and justice in ways readers of any era can appreciate.
The novel remains intensely plot-driven as various schemes unfold endangering Gabrielle and her father's kingdom. Walker keeps pages turning with her gift for action scenes - ranging from jousting matches to battles on land and sea as pirates conspire against King Guillemin. She brings a true flair and cinematic sweep to such sequences without ever sacrificing character development or emotional depth.
It is this ability to balance compelling narrative, vivid world-building, layered characters and pulse-pounding action that distinguishes Walker as a storyteller. Too many similar novels get bogged down focusing on one element alone; here all pieces work seamlessly together to keep readers rapt throughout. Subplots like Lancelot's role mentoring Bastien and preparing defenses at the castle enrich the scope of Walker's imagined universe as well.
Walker also proves a deft hand at woven interpersonal drama. Gabrielle struggles against a patriarchal system seeking to control her destiny while yearning to protect her ailing father. Bastien fights his own feelings of unworthiness holding him back from the woman he loves due to problems entirely out of his control. Their private moments together develop a beautiful longing and yearning romance amidst very real obstacles.
By grounding even fantastical elements in believable human emotions, Walker ensures Winter Solstice ultimately resonates as a timeless story of love against all odds. The novel builds intensity as various villains' deceptions are gradually revealed, raising real stakes for Gabrielle and Bastien's hopeful romance. At its heart, Walker's tale celebrates courage, loyalty, sacrifice and fighting for what you believe in - themes as resonant today as in medieval times.
All the threads come together brilliantly in a dramatic and thrilling climactic joust where the champions fight not just for glory but the fate of a kingdom. Even knowing the description promised an impossible love might find a way, Walker leaves readers on edge right until the final page turns. She understands suspenseful story structure perfectly to keep audiences rapt and rewarded.
In the end, Walker triumphs by bringing her multilayered story full circle with a satisfying romantic conclusion while still leaving the future of her imagined world somewhat open-ended. Fans will hope to return to this magical place and characters once more in a future installment. Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle proves why Jennifer Ivy Walker merits attention as one of fantasy fiction's most skilled new storytellers merging compelling narratives, enchanting settings and richly human characters. This medieval love story casts a magical spell hard to forget long after the final word.
In summary, Jennifer Ivy Walker has outdone herself with Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle - an epic medieval fantasy romance that sweeps readers away on a spellbinding journey. Her mastery of layered plotlines, vividly authentic settings, and profoundly moving character arcs ensures this novel will enchant audiences for years to come. With this latest success, Walker cements her place among talented authors reviving and expanding the potential of historical fantasy fiction as a genre. Fans of sweeping sagas, uplifting romance, and beautifully imagined alternate worlds have a new author to add permanently to their must-read lists.
Splendid! I loved this book! Chivalrous knights, glamorous nobles, intrigue, bloodshed, celebrations and true love! This reminds me of some of my favorite historical novels from long ago! The author brilliantly wove a tale that kept my interest from the first. I could smell the evergreen boughs and hear the waves of the sea! Beautiful Gabrielle is a princess by birth and a Viking Queen at heart. Bastien is the Master of the horses for the King. Their passion and love for each other is destined to go unfulfilled. Can true love win? I highly recommend this book!
“Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle (Christmas in the Castle)” is a sweeping medieval historical romance full of heart and soul, penned by Jennifer Ivy Walker. Princess Gabrielle of Finistère’s dream is to be a warrior queen, a Valkyrie shield maiden, like one of her ancestors. She is an agile and graceful woman whose father, King Guillemin of Finistère, sent her to Paris to learn the proper etiquette and mannerisms of a refined French queen. With his declining health and imminent demise, King Guillemin has sent for her to return home from Paris to be hurriedly betrothed to a man with royal blood and one she dislikes. An existing misogynous French law stipulates that she can not inherit a throne in her own right. Elsewhere, Sir Bastien de Landuc, a skilled horseman, had been working in the royal stables and had grown up watching Gabrielle’s equestrian skills develop. Gabrielle had long captured his heart, but her coveted heart seemed unattainable. Is there any hope for him?
This story will capture the hearts of many readers. The author’s narrating skills are unparalleled. She knows what to say and where to say it. The stirring introduction and beguiling start of this text enthralled me, and I could hardly put the book down. I appreciated the work she put into showcasing the medieval settings surrounding the story, creating a rich tapestry that immerses you in and makes you feel part of the narrative.
The colloquial diction the author employs by adding French vocabulary peppered across the pages gives the book a sense of scenery adding flavor, authenticity, and atmosphere to its fabric. What brings the book to life is the book’s infusion of drama and fantasy elements such as wizards, fairies, and magic. These are blended with an impossible love story and well-known places such as Ireland, France, and Britain. This will undoubtedly keep readers engaged. The author triumphs with this one.
Themes such as courage, sacrifice, and resilience encompass this rich plot along with characters that fit right into a majestic medieval world. The connection between Sir Bastien and Gabrielle has all the sparks and readers will have to read on to get to the heart of their romance. The characters are well-developed and exhibit plausible growth as the book progresses, and I found myself rooting for Gabrielle every step of the way. Jennifer Ivy Walker is a talented writer who creates an alluring world that brings the characters’ conflicts to life. Further, the dreamy and lyrical prose in the book adds to the elegance of the tale and elevates the book above many of its genre. Altogether, “Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle (Christmas in the Castle)” is a welcome addition to the literary world and is bound to garner a large audience.
Princess Gabrielle was glad to be back home after spending the last four years in Paris with her aunt, but not under the current circumstances. Her father had requested her return due to his poor health and she knew that it was his wish to see her married before he died and since the law did not allow women to inherit or rule as would be her right as queen upon the death of her father King Guillemin of Finistere.
As she approaches her father introduces her to the allies he is meeting with. He is being pressured for her to marry Ugolin Cauchon who is a cruel vile man whose father has ties with the pirate Balthazar. If Ugolin became King of Guillemin he would gain control of all the inlets, caves and coves of their kingdom in order to intercept and raid ships. Making him more powerful than even King Philippe of France.
Instead of angering him with an outright refusal which could provoke a pirate attack, it was decided to hold a Yuletide Joust where King Guillemin would grant her hand in marriage to the champion.
Among the men sits Sir Bastien de Landuc, the Master of Horse, who she has loved since childhood. It was he who taught her how to ride and also trained her how to defend herself with both the bow and sword. And with the threat of Ugolin Cauchon her father appoints him as her personal royal guard. She wishes that Bastien could win her hand but being without title disqualified him from participating.
I loved this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. We first meet Sir Bastien de Landuc in the Wild Rose and the Sea Raven trilogy and although this is a standalone romance I highly recommend Issylte & Tristan's story.
This book is action-packed, full of danger and intrigue and will keep you turning the pages as Bastien protects Gabrielle from the evil Ugolin. This is a multiple-POV story with insights from Gabrielle, Bastien, Sir Lacelot's mother Viviane and Ugolin Cauchon. Highly recommend!
This is my third book, I am reading by Jennifer Ivy Walker and as usual she did not fail to surprise me with her unique and intriguing imagination as well her proficient diction.
'Winter Solstice in the crystal castle' is medieval historical romance filled with immense passion. Princess Gabrielle dream is to be a warrior queen, a Valkyrie shield maiden like one of her ancestors. She is smart, intelligent and dignified woman who wears her heart on her sleeve.
King Guillemin has sent her to Paris to polish her mannerisms and etiquettes like that of a sophisticated French queen. As King Guillemin's health is rapidly deteriorating, Gabrielle is asked to return home at earliest to be engaged to man of blue blood. As per the French's misogynous law clearly states that she should marry man of royal blood.
Sir Bastien de Landue, a prodigious horseman, had been working in royal stables, growing up watching Gabrielle and her skills... Has captured his heart. But it seems unrealistic to make place in her heart...what will be their future of Gabrielle and Bastien??
Jennifer Ivy Walker weaves a tapestry of historical fiction in "Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle," creating a vivid portrayal of Medieval romance and chivalry. The narrative is enriched with descriptive details, invoking characters from fables and history, including the legendary Sir Lancelot. The infusion of French vocabulary adds authenticity, flavor, and a distinct atmospheric charm.
The love story between Sir Bastien de Landuc and Gabrielle unfolds amidst the rich tapestry of Medieval times. Fierce and loyal characters draw readers into a captivating romance, making the pages come alive with sweet and engaging storytelling. The multiple points of view, featuring Gabrielle, Bastien, Sir Lancelot's mother Viviane, and Ugolin Cauchon, provide depth to the narrative.
This action-packed novel is brimming with danger, keeping readers eagerly turning the pages. "Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle" is a delightful blend of romance and adventure, showcasing Walker's skill in crafting compelling characters and a riveting plot. For enthusiasts of historical romance set in a Medieval backdrop, this book is a must-read. Highly recommended to add to your reading list for an immersive journey into a world of knights, princesses, and timeless love.
If you're looking for a sweet and short read with a bit of spice, you should order this book now. After reading many complicated stories last week, this was the most relaxing and stress-free. I like how simple and easy it is to read.
The author did a great job with the story, plot, and characters. The best part was that the father wasn't the bad guy, and the whole family wanted the two lovers to be together.
I won't spoil what happens with the princess or if the bodyguard confesses his love. To find out, you'll have to read the story yourself.
I took away one star just because it has spice. I'm not a fan of spicy books, but sometimes you just can't resist because the story grabs your interest so much.
As a history nerd, there’s nothing that de-rails my reading more than accidental errors when dealing with past facts. Although I understand that the book is historical fiction, I should still be able to believe it “could” happen. Jennifer Walker doesn’t disappoint. She weaves an accurate story complete with noble castle life, class expectations, and geographical medieval setting. It makes me appreciate Gabrielle, Bastien, and the rest of the support characters without taking away from the story. The story is a classic tale of the unfairness of women’s treatment, affluent society and their cruelties, and the fire burning in us all when it comes to our desires. If you love medieval tales, this is a great read.
This is my first book I have read by Jennifer Ivy Walker and I really loved it. Her writing transported me to Medieval France as it composed of Knights, Maidens, jousting tournaments and a villain. It had a Game of Thrones, Robin Hood vibe to me and it was a nice break for me as I predominantly read Regency HR.
I felt heartbreak of the main characters Princess Gabrielle, the heroine and the Hero, Sir Bastien de Landuc. They have fallen in love, but cannot be together due to class differences and the Princess being forced by her ailing father to marry the winner of the joust tournament.
If you love forbidden love, angst, adventure, Knights, a strong warrior Princess and a protective Hero, then this book is for you.
I loved it and can't wait to read more by author.
I received an arc from the author for free and this review is my own and is submitted voluntarily.
This is an enjoyable, quick read. It is a sweet story filled with chivalry, loyalty and bravery. The plot is engaging and filled with adventure and activity. The setting is vividly portrayed and beautifully crafted by the author. It tangents off the previous trilogy from the author and fits perfectly into that world, without any spoilers. It can therefore be read as a stand alone story even if the reader has not read the other books. There are some brilliant characters. I particularly love how feisty and spirited Gabrielle is. She’s more than a stereotypical damsel in distress which makes her a lot of fun to read about and makes the reader really want her to get her wish. Overall this is a really enjoyable read.
This was a sweet, yet action packed romance novel. This is actually the third book I have had the privilege to read and review for Walker. And like “The Wild Rose and The Sea Raven” series, I was not disappointed with the story. I really enjoyed reading about our “Viking Queen” Gabrielle, and her crush Chivalrous. Their story was one that made you feel young again. I loved watching how they let their passion lose and their love bloom. Without taking away from each other. Watching how each character added to the overall story was interesting. The side characters built up the story well. Though I hope that if we get a second book that we find out what happened to the King’s Healer, if he was found later on. I loved that Walker talked about the issue of children in this book. There was a small amount of talk about being unable to have a child, and the struggles about being a parent. Both issues were done with respect and care. But did not play a large part in the story. I really feel that the villains were my second favorite characters. In that I love to hate them way. I felt that although we did not get as much into them as the other books did. There was enough there to give the characters detail, a backstory, and the healing of “I Don’t Like You”. All in all this was an easy 9/10 rating from me. Which is one of the many reasons. I am looking forward to continuing “The Wild Rose and The Sea Raven” series. By reading her third book in the series “The Emerald Fairy and The Dragon Knight. Thank you Jennifer for sharing this story with me.
Absolutely adored Gabrielle & Bastien’s story!. This book truly takes you to a French castle in winter. Jennifer’s writing is phenomenal!! This was my first book I’ve read of hers and I’ll definitely be reading more. Also a fun & easy read !
Walker has a way of wrapping a reader in a world of words and carrying you away with her stories. You don’t just read the story you feel it. Anyone who loves the time of maidens and knights and mystics will love this story. Quick easy read didn’t want to put it down.
I just devoured this steamy historical romance! Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. Throw in a princess, some knights, and a villain, and you’ve got the perfect romance! So much action, plots of kidnappings, murder, and so much more. The characters are divine, with people you love, and others that you love to hate. Add in the Christmas storyline, with traditions and Christmas wishes, and it can’t get much better! I could not get enough, I flew right through this book!
I read this book in one day! ONE DAY! That should tell you how much I enjoyed the book!!! One word alone should be enough to get you to read this story, KNIGHTS!!!! As a young girl who didn’t dream of a knight fighting for you!!!
Gabrielle was a tough chica!!! I couldn’t have looked up to a more strong heroine! And don’t even get me started on Bastiien!!! He is the knight in shining armor you’d dreamed of!!!
I love the medieval, fantasy world that Jennifer Ivy Walker has created in this book and her The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven trilogy. It's detailed, magical, romantic, and chocked full of treachery and adventure. I loved how this story introduced us to Gabrielle, an awesome kick-butt princess while bringing back some of the favorite characters readers of previous books will recognize. This storyline was fantastic with Gabrielle facing an arranged marriage to a loathsome, horrible man while in love with Bastien, a man without a title of nobility who can't compete in the tournament to win her hand in marriage. I highly recommend this book.
“Gabrielle is a flame haired, fire hearted French princess who dreams of becoming a Valkyrie warrior queen like her Viking ancestors from Normandy. Sent to Paris to learn the proper etiquette for a future French queen, she is called home to le Château de Beaufort for a forced marriage to a man she loathes when her father the king's precarious health takes a sudden turn for the worse.
🌿Chivalrous, solitary knight Sir Bastien de Landuc suffers an impossible love for Gabrielle, the unattainable princess he can never have. Without a title of nobility, he is ineligible to compete in the tournament for her hand in marriage, despite his unparalleled equestrian skills and inimitable swordsmanship.
❄️Yet, Yuletide wishes for a wondrous winter solstice in the glorious Crystal Castle might make impossible dreams come true. Can the valiant knight win the coveted hand of his Viking queen?”
🔥✨ REVIEW ✨🔥 🏰overall, i really enjoyed this book as a quick read for any fantasy lover! it connects all of the dots when it comes to setting the scene and held wonder throughout. 🏰my only dislike was the immediate building of relationships from the initial beginning of the book itself - im talking it lays out who is who plain as day - this may just be personal preference but I really like to be slowly introduced to who is who, etc. This is just personal preference! 🏰overall, id recommend this book if youre looking for a great romantasy read that includes tension and adventure as the main characters both navigate their own worlds as they encounter one anothers’
💗 thank you to @jenniferivywalkerauthor for gifting me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review 💗

An Ethereal Adventure Through a Magical Medieval Kingdom
When I first began Jennifer Ivy Walker's enchanting new tale Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle, I felt as though I was stepping through a shimmering portal into a whole other world. Page by page, she transports the reader to a meticulously envisioned medieval kingdom where magic still dances in the forests and love can conquer all. From the snowy ramparts of an oceanfront castle to misty valleys and rolling emerald hills dotted with heather, Walker immerses you so completely in her masterfully constructed setting and characters that it truly feels like an escape into fantasy.
Set amidst the festive atmosphere of Yuletide celebrations, the story focuses on Gabrielle, a headstrong princess who longs to break free of societal constraints. As the daughter of the ailing King Guillemin, pressure mounts for her to choose a husband before it's too late. Yet Gabrielle dreams of adventures beyond the castle walls like her brave Viking ancestors before her. By her side stands her devoted champion, the noble knight Sir Bastien who has protected and cared for Gabrielle since they were children. Though they share a profound connection, Bastien's status as a landless knight seems to doom any hopes of winning her hand.
It's in these opening chapters that Walker begins weaving her magical spell over the reader. Her vivid descriptions bring the kingdom to shimmering life whether depicting majestic seascapes or lively royal courts. You can almost taste the savory winter foods and feel the crunch of fallen snow underfoot. More importantly, she imbues her characters with such depth and dimensionality that they feel like real people, not just roles in a story. Gabrielle's fierce independence and Bastien's quiet honor shine through in subtle, authentic ways that make their journey immediately compelling.
Around these central figures, Walker populates her medieval world with an ensemble of supporting characters just as vibrant. There is the indomitable Sir Lancelot who aids Bastien behind the scenes, the cunning Prince Kaherdin with ambitions beyond honor, and even roguish pirates that add an element of threat and intrigue. Like masterful gestures of a maestro, Walker seamlessly brings all these interweaving plotlines together towards a sweeping dramatic climax. Yet she never loses sight of crafting fully formed souls within this epic tapestry.
As tensions mount heading into the climactic Yuletide tournament, Walker effortlessly ups suspense without sacrificing character. Her epic battle sequences transport the reader directly into fields of valor and honor. But it is the tender, private moments she grants Gabrielle and Bastien that linger most in the memory. Their connection, built since joyful childhood days, rings profoundly true - a testament to Walker's deft characterization. She imbues even the most fantastical elements with recognizable humanity so that their triumphs and trials deeply resonate.
Throughout it all, Walker champions themes as timeless as love itself - courage, loyalty, sacrifice and fighting for dreams against all odds. But her story reminds that within each of us, no matter our station, lies reserves of strength to overcome "impossible" barriers. Some bonds, like Gabrielle and Bastien's, can persevere through any trial if they remain steadfast in spirit. It is no surprise that by the tale's perfect conclusion, readers feel enchanted, uplifted and reluctant to leave this magical kingdom and company behind. Walker constructs worlds that invite rereading like old friends to find new richness with each visit.
In this ever-distracted modern age, Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle offers the rare escape into complete immersion. Stepping into Walker's exquisitely painted medieval setting feels like a pilgrimage to a place of eternal wonder and hope. Magic still feels possible in her crystalline castle towers and misty glens where true love conquers above all else. It is the kind of story that lingers long after the last page, its empowering spirit staying with you like folklore passed down through generations. Little wonder her tale has captivated so many; Walker casts a spell of dreaming that lingers in the reader's mind and heart like fairy lights against a twilit sky. I suspect this ethereal adventure through her world will enchant audiences for years to come.
As the nights grow longer and the air fills with anticipation of the holidays, my mind starts to wander to realms of fantasy, romance and adventure. There is nothing more satisfying during this magical time of year than escaping into an immersive tale that transports me to another world. Jennifer Ivy Walker's latest novel Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle provided the perfect wintertime escape, sweeping me away on a journey I didn't want to end.
From the first page, I was enthralled by Walker's lushly detailed medieval kingdom of Finistère. Rolling green hills and stormy seas came alive in vivid color, making me feel like I was right there alongside the characters. I loved learning about the traditions and social structures of this unique setting through everyday interactions and descriptions. The French terminology added an air of authenticity without overwhelming the flow of the story. Within moments, I was completely immersed in 13th century Brittany.
The introduction of headstrong heroine Gabrielle and her devoted champion Bastien immediately caught my heart. Though from different social classes, their bond built from childhood was profoundly moving and believable. I found myself rooting for them from the very start, relating to their strengths, longings and very real obstacles faced. Gabrielle's spirit and thirst for adventure despite the restrictions of her time left me in awe of her bravery. Meanwhile, Bastien's quiet loyalty and honor established him the kind of partner anyone would be lucky to have at their side.
As mysteries and political machinations began stirring around Gabrielle's kingdom, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how events unfolded. Walker excels at slowly raising narrative stakes while maintaining intricately woven character development and emotional depth. Her flair for action kept me on the edge of my seat during tournament scenes while still tapping into the profound hopes within. Supporting players like the indomitable Sir Lancelot added layers of richness, coming to life through meaningful interactions.
Throughout it all, themes of courage, sacrifice, loyalty and fighting for what you believe in shone through, reminding us all of life's deepest truths. Walker celebrates finding inner strength when all seems lost and overcoming even "impossible" barriers through perseverance and love. It's no wonder I felt completely swept away by this epic experience, emerging on the other side with a sense of renewal and joy. Characters I had come to cherish stayed with me long after turning the final page, their resonant journey permanently etched in my heart.
Most magical of all was Walker's ability to rekindle childhood wonder and make me believe in possibilities again through her storytelling gifts. Like stumbling upon a glimmering snow globe hidden in a forgotten drawer, immersing myself in her spectacular Crystal Kingdom felt like unwrapping a gift. I wanted to linger in its halls, explore mystical forests and ride across rolling countryside alongside companions who felt like old friends. Maybe it was the holiday spirit already swelling in my soul, but I emerged certain that magic really can be found if we simply open our eyes to its beauty.
Even now as the season unfurls in a flurry of sparkles, I find myself returning in thought to Walker's magnificent tale. Like holiday carols or treasured family traditions, I know the characters and their story of hope will warm my days for years to come. Winter Solstice in the Crystal Castle enchanted me on the deepest levels, reminding why we need magic and romance most during this special time of lights, evergreens and possibilities. I simply can't recommend it enough to any fellow adventurers and dreamers seeking an escape this winter season.
So if you're searching for a new storytelling friend to embrace the holidays, look no further than Jennifer Ivy Walker's masterwork. Her gift for bringing legendary worlds, knights and fairy tales spiraling together will leave you aglow from head to toe like the twinkling trees outside. Most magical of all, the epic love she weaves between Gabrielle and Bastien will stay with you long after the final page, becoming your own treasured tradition to return to annually without fail. This is one Christmas castle I feel forever blessed to call home.
Win The Tournament, Win The Princess, Become The King
Quote:📖 Just like her foolish childhood dreams of becoming a valorous, victorious Valkyrie. A Viking warrior queen like her ancestor Brunnhild. Instead—she’d be given away, like a prize. Denied her right to the throne. Forced to surrender her kingdom—and her body—to a stranger.
Thoughts: 💡 This was a fun and imaginative story that reminded me of A Knights Tale in some ways because it revolved around a joust to win a princess’s hand in marriage and the MMC was not a noble. It was also very different because it folded in some Arthurian legends, was set in Medieval France, and even had mentions of elves and pirates. There were also very strong themes of forbidden romance, viking warrior queen vibes, and a black knight and evil villain actively plotting the downfall of the MCs.
Writing Mechanics: ✍️ The writing style was a bit different because the dialogue was framed to fit the historical period. It was all in third person past tense and jumped had multiple POVs. I thought the characters were moderately well developed but the character types were a bit stereotypical. The Princess was beautiful and perfect, her suitor handsome and strong and easily bent to her will. The villain was mistreated because he was ugly and became manipulative and cruel. And the good guys were all easily smarter than the bad guys, and everything was all black and white with extreme counter measures. But considering the time period and scope of the story it worked.
Fun Bits: ⚜️ Fiery Willful Princess/ Viking Warrior Queen ⚜️ Swoon Worthy Knight ⚜️ Tight Knit Family Dynamics ⚜️ Good Guys Thrashing The Bad Guys ⚜️ Forbidden Love ⚜️ Forced Marriage ⚜️ Jousting
Important Note:✨ This is an interconnected stand-alone series where each book was written by a different author.
It’s another Jennifer Walker story! From the cover I thought it was another installment of her last series I read and reviewed but this insanely different. It’s a medieval historical romance (thankfully) and I absolutely loved it. When princess Gabrielle is sent to Paris to learn the etiquette of a queen by her father, King Guillemin. He sooner calls for her return home to hurriedly marry her to a man with royal blood.
Of course a French law dictates that Gabrielle can’t inherit the royal throne. Thankful for the romance this story brings as it will leave readers with a need for more as it captures their hearts. Elsewhere in the story a horseman, Sir Bastien who worked in the royal stables has grown up watching Gabrielle who has long captured his heart.
Thankfully Jen does it again with her world building and her beautiful descriptions of a medieval world. She paints the perfect picture for readers with a vast imagination and although I didn’t really understand the French text spoken throughout, it defiantly gave the story more flavor.
I loved this heartwarming story set in the same medieval universe as The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven Trilogy, with the return of some of my favorite side characters. I think this was the best one yet. I would recommend reading this one around winter holidays, by the fire, with a warm drink!
I enjoyed this sweet story. The Author's writing transported me to medieval France. It was a quick fantasy read. Gabrielle was such a badass. The thing I loved most was the Christmas plotline. The plot is engaging with adventures. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it for romantasy lovers.
