By Anna Markland
(The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition Book 4)

Vengeance is is a tale of love and revenge.

Ronan MacLachlainn is an Irishman of great strength and determination. His home is taken over by some very bad brothers the MacFintains and their band of mercenaries who kill Ronan's wife and unborn child. They then torture him, maim him, and he is dispossessed. He now burns for vengance and the restoration of his hereditary Irish lands. Now he has to come to terms with the irrevocable physical losses he has suffered.

Rhoni de Montbryce appears to all to be just another spoiled, rich Anglo-Norman noblewoman. She gradually cloaks herself in the strength, honor, and integrity that is her birthright however will she be able to prove equal to the daunting challenges Ronan will face?
Will Ronan ever be able to get past the vengance he seeks and see Rhoni for who she really is?
Can they both get past the horrors and injustice of the things they have witnessed?

Anna Markland is simply fantastic. She writes a story that makes you want jump up grab a sword and get in on the action. There were times I wanted to scream at the characters and at other times I wanted to give them a hug. To me this is what makes a story fantastic. I could envision every little detail down to the seals swimming in the water. If you enjoy a fast paced story that involves history and romance this is the book to read. Well done Ms. Markland you have a winner here.

Vengeance by Anna Markland (The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition), while part of this series, it can be read as a stand alone.
Emotional, intense, poignant tale with danger, love and romance. This is Ronan MacLachlainn, an Irishman and Rhoni de Montbryce who seemss to be a spoiled, rich Anglo-Norman noblewoman, but she is so much more. Their story is filled with strength,
determination, challenges, hope and adventure.
Beautifully and masterfully written with intrigue, and romance. A few twists and turns, honor, integrity and a compelling storyline, will captivate and keep you engrossed in this compelling Historical Romance. A wonderful and beautiful Irish tale. Highly recommended for fans of Historical Romance, powerful characters, intriguing storylines and poignant romance.

"Vengeance would be his". I was not prepared for the emotions that seeped through the pages of this amazing story. Anna Markland has outdone herself with this 4th book in The Montbryce Legacy. She has brought the history and the terrible brutality of this time to life but also the loyalty and honor of the men and women who lived it. Ronan MacLachlainn is an Irishman of great honor and strength who has his stronghold invaded and suffers horrible torture and is maimed while his wife and unborn child are killed. He only survives by the help of the son of his steward, who managed to escape notice and absconds with a small boat to take them to safety. Rhoni de Montbryce, the daughter of rich Anglo-Norman parents is with her mother away from home when she spots him in the water when she hears the cries of a seal (yes an important part of the story). Fate has brought them together with an instant attraction, but can Ronan overcome his injuries and find love again? His only thought is avenging his dead wife and people while taking back his land. This is an intriguing story with so many facets, it kept me riveted to the pages. There are numerous twists and turns and even a little magic and paranormal that weaves delightfully in the story. This is my favorite trope with the wounded hero who finds redemption and love that makes him whole again. I will leave you with this last quote from the book "My friend, the heart can have it's own reasons that have nothing to do with reason itself". One of the best books I have read this year that engaged my heart and left me longing for more...

It’s not often a book brings me to tears and certainly not in the first 10 minuets of reading it , but this book did, such emotional scenes.
It was so easy to except and build feelings and emotions for these characters, I felt I’d known them for years .Ronan and Mary’s relationship broke my heart .
I was anxious for poor Ronan until he met Rhoni , they were made for each other such passion and promise for their futures , and the unfolding story was brilliant, the addition of seals and link to his mother and name were really great .
It was also lovely to meet Rhodri again that guy was a special star in Ram’s book .
In all I loved this as I have the whole Montbryce series.
Who’s next for Anna to add to the saga , can’t wait to find out .
I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review

Another Montbryce Legacy Book by Anna Markland. I just loved Vengeance. To me it was an epic tale of love. This story has torture, revenge, murder, seals, (I love the seals), family loyalty, second chance at love and a lot more. This book is well worth the read.

3 and 1/2 Stars - Medieval with a Tortured Irish Hero Set Upon Revenge

Let me say at the outset that Markland can write well and she has obviously done her research. However, while this story was at times entertaining, even exciting, it did not hold my interest (but I did finish it). Perhaps it is because it comes midway through a series and I’ve not read the others where the secondary characters were more richly developed. I think as an installment where readers have read the others, this would fit in nicely.

Set in Ireland, Wales and England in 1097, this is the story of Ronan, Lord of Tur MacLachlain, nephew of the King of Munster. Tortured and robbed of his lands, he sets out to avenge the murder of his wife, unborn child and his people and in Wales meets Rhoni de Montbryce, the admittedly spoiled daughter of the Norman Earl of Ellesmere. She is twenty and still unmarried (a bit hard to believe in medieval times but apparently she had an indulgent father). When she meets Ronan, she is smitten and Ronan is instantly in lust. But first comes Ronan’s vengeance; he decides he must have help and not coincidentally decides to seek the help of Rhoni’s father.

I found it difficult to believe that a man who had been brutally tortured, his eye put out with a hot coal, and who is barely alive would get a hard when he opens his one remaining eye and sees a pretty girl. Likewise, it was difficult to believe that same maiden would have an experienced woman’s sexual reaction to seeing that tortured man. It was just a bit too much and too early into the story for me. I expect sexual tension and desire in romance, of course, but lust at every breath is a bit unnatural, especially for the historical setting of knights and their ladies. The “love” between Ronan and Rhoni came on too swiftly or in any event I wasn’t persuaded. Though the other characters insisted it was “obvious” they were in love I couldn’t see it.

There’s a fair amount of action for those who love it (I do) and some good medieval wrangling over lost estates and corrupt earls, but otherwise not much history here. Still for those who love the series, this is a worthy installment and likely will appeal.

This is an entertaining story that will not take you a long time to read. I started on Wednesday morning and was finished with it by lunchtime on Friday. The romance between Rhoni and Ronan was interesting and developed well, though I'm not a huge fan of instant lust (at least not so instant as it was portrayed here) of the way that lust suddenly converged onto ever lasting love in this story.
Ronan was the character I loved the most, a man marred by torture and focused on avenging his dead wife and reclaiming his property in Ireland. He'd been bound by an arranged loveless marriage, had remained faithful and his first concern is honoring the memory of his wife. Even though he's already lusting after Rhoni, he still came through as an honorable man. I was more on the fence about Rhoni because at times she sounds just like a foolish, spoiled brat.
The historical part of the novel did not convince me entirely too. I've read worse, but I've also read a lot better. The feuds and improbable alliances between families seem Ok, even the occasional (or not so occasional) switching sides. What mostly felt off was the women's behavior and the willingness of men to change plans based on that. Rhoni's carnal knowledge is also exaggerated for a maiden, especially back then. My only other complaint was that the names of the main characters sounded all sound so similar that it took me a while to learn to distinguish between them.
This book is part of a series, but it can be perfectly read as a stand alone story. I haven't read any of the others, although maybe having previous knowledge of the characters would have helped me with the name thing.
It's not amazing, but will not burn your brain cells either and is the ideal companion for a rainy afternoon or a cold winter evening.

This was a sensational story! I loved this it kept me enthralled till I finished the book so much emotion in every page. I loved Ronan MacLachlain he's an honourable proud man, a man that doesn’t shirk his duty. His first wife was a pious woman and very fragile, she belonged in a convent but had to do her duty.
Ronan’s life drastically changes when his lands are taken his home besieged and his wife and unborn child violently murdered. The fact that he’s been captured by the enemy and tortured only makes him swear that if he escapes his tormentors will pay the price with their lives.
Escape came with the help of Connall but he’s half dead and seriously injured.
Rhoni de Montbryce is a very spoiled young noblewoman until she comes across Ronan unconscious in a boat and she fell for the man but she needs to prove her worth to him, help him heal his broken heart and let go of the demons that have taken hold of him. Can Rhoni’s love be enough for him to let go of the deep pain and need for vengeance?

I can not say enough about how amazing this story is, from the first page to the very last word I felt that I was a part of their world, a bystander in their pain and suffering. Anna Markland has a remarkable talent, she weaves a magical story that ensnares the readers imagination.

I recieved a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

I could count on one hand how many times a story has brought me to tear in the first chapter…this is one of those stories. Vengeance by Anna Markland, The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition Book 4, brings so many emotions, you cannot help yourself to being drawn into each one. I cannot wait to read more of this series, although this book can be read as a standalone. Vengeance held me captive from the first page to the last and the well drawn characters easily come to life and captures the era in which the story is set. Anna is truly a superior author who’s books are so well described and stories that are so original, that I get giddy just thinking about her next release. This story has love at first sight, deception, torture, fighting, abduction, kindness, caring, friendships both new and old, true evil, devotion, trust, forbidden love, compassion, understanding, pain, rescue, rape, murder, healing, abuse, family love and yes, seeking revenge. This is a must read and I highly recommend this book as you wont be disappointed. So if you want to travel was back in time to 1097 AD Ireland with Ranan MacLachlainn, Lord of Tur MacLachlainn Tower and see if he really does seek his Vengeance.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

I love that this author has done these anniversary editions. I have read every single one and they're just phenomenal.

In Vengeance, we meet Ronan MacLachlainn who is set on achieving his vengeance. He is an honorable Irishman of great honor who has suffered tremendously; not only is he suffering the death of his pregnant wife and unborn child...he is placed in his own dungeon and is tortured and maimed. He survives because his steward's son helps him. This young boy helps his Laird because he too wants vengeance for the horrible death of his father who was killed by the same men. On their journey in the ocean they encounter difficulties.

Rhoni de Montbryce is the youngest daughter of the honorable Ram and Mabelle Montbryce. Her parents want her to marry, but Rhoni will only marry for love. She wants a marriage like her mother and father, one that is filled with love.
Rhoni finds a very large man and boy washed up on the shore. She is bound and determined to assist them after realizing the man is extremely injured, he'd been beaten and was at death's door.

Can a love blossom or will Vengeance be too powerful?

A gripping story. I can highly recommend it!

Wow, this is superb! Very well written story, so captivating that once I got started I was fixated. I love the paranormal element and both characters. Ronan is a giant, 100% alpha male, dedicated to his family and homeland. Rhoni is bold and adventurous, spoiled-she definitely knew how to get her way, which I think gave her character more independence and strength. True to the medieval genre the road is never easy, their endurance & love are challenged on every hand but together they stand tall like a strong warrior, come what may. It takes a strong woman to stand up to and with him but she has just the boots to do it.

I try not to read book blurbs prior to reading the book, I wait until afterwards and this one gives an excellent description. Having so many characters with names beginning with "R" did get a little confusing at times although medieval names are always confusing to me. :)

The author writes a gripping story of a Lord who lost his lands, wife, unborn child and who was brutally tortured. Ronan escaped with the help of his stewards son and is set on vengeance towards the men who would take what is his. Rhoni is th daughter of a powerful Norman Earl who has been protected and sheltered her entire life. She and her mother travel for a celebration and to see her birth place. While on the beach Rhoni hears a seal barking and she realizes it is trying to get the group's attention and she see a small boat. Inside the boat they find a two males one who appears to be almost dead until they realize he has been badly tortured. Rhoni will have to fight Ronan demons in order to have the man she has fallen for and Ronan must have his vengeance.

This is a very good read and a page turner. This book has plenty action and tears.

I received this book for an honest review.

This is an exciting, romantic, entertaining and enjoyable story. My favorite of the series so far. Ronan is kind, honorable and stubborn. Think is a little self absorbed and spoiled, but also caring and brave. Rhoni comes across Ronan as she's visiting the place of her birth when he washes up on shore barely alive, after losing his home and wife to invaders, and being tortured. Rhoni is instantly and intensely drawn to him, and him to her, until he finds out that she's Norman. As he recovers and makes plans for revenge, she hopes to convince him that they should marry. There is good drama, and bad drama, while former enemies learn to trust and become friends.

I was gifted a copy of this book. “Vengeance” by Anna Markland is book four in the Montbryce Legacy Series. Lord Ronan MacLachlainn of Tur MacLachlainn in Ireland is brutally tortured when his castle is overrun by brigands. Ronan is rescued by his steward’s son Connall. The pair makes their escape in a tiny boat and wash ashore miles from Ireland in Wales- unconscious and near death. Rescued by nuns, Ronan meets Rhoni de Montbryce. Can true love blossom when vengeance rages in the heart?
I really enjoyed this book. It is a complex story. It ties in various characters from the books so it is important to read the entire series. I highly recommend Vengeance.

Beautifully written and totally engrossing. Emotions are palpable, the scenes vivid and the characters are realistic and endearing. The heroine grows up quickly and proves to be a true and brave helpmate. I liked that the men for the most part were honorable and brave - the hero shows great restraint both in his revenge and with Rhoni. I was given a copy of this book to read and review and I honestly loved it!

Vengeance is another well-written book by Anna Markland. The story is extremely emotional and not for everybody. There is a lot of brutalities which are common for the era. The characters are well developed and the story draws you in and doesn't let you go until you have devoured every page. I highly recommend not just this book but the whole series. It's well worth reading.

Exciting

Ronan was the lord of In Ireland. The MacFintain brothers take over the castle when Ronan left to help with building of his cousins castle. He had a feeling something was wrong and after a dream decided to go home. He was captured and tortured losing his eye and a broken leg. His Stewart’s son rescues him and they get away in a boat. They end up in Wales.
Rhoni is the daughter of the Earl of Ellesmere (Ram) and Maybelle, Maybelle wants to go to Wales to see the daughter of her best friend become the prioress and Rhoni wants to go along and see the place where she was born. Is it a coincidence that Ronanand Rhoni end up in the same place or is it fate.

History and Passion

I enjoyed reading this novel. The book had none of those anachronisms that can be annoying. The story covered Anglo-Norman Border Marches to Wales to Ireland. There wasn't much humor involved but the story did definitely hold my attention. I found the hero to be very likeable and again scarred therefore very realistic for a knight of Mid-evil Europe. I loved the horses. This book is definitely an adult read so it is not suitable for a children or YA audience, but I would recommend it to my friends and family.

I enjoyed the story.

You have to read carefully, most of the names for the characters are so closely spelled, it is hard to keep up with who is who.
The story is good and the action keeps you well invested in the story.

A beautiful telling of an Irish tale of Love and War. So worth the Read!

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and it was a beautiful read! The 4th book in the Montbryce Legacy, tells the tale of Hilda’s Rhonwen de Montbryce(Rhoni), the daughter of the Norman Lord/ Count and Countess that were the starring characters in Conquest, the first book in the Montbryce Legacy. It takes place in Sord Colmcille, Ireland and the Welsh Marches, Salop England in the year 1097AD. This time in history, and in this novel, is ripe with war and strife, and this book begins with all of the excitement that war brings. I recommend having a box of tissues on hand from Chapter One on. This book brings out so many emotions, and there was not one poorly written part!
I loved all of the history contained in this book it was so very interesting, especially if you are a history buff. I was drawn into the story by the hope of the historical telling, and kept there by the deep hard won love of Rhoni and the Irish Lord Ronan MacLachlainn. Ronan lost his Keep, wife and unborn son in an unexpected raid by neighboring Irish landholders with the help of Norman mercenaries. Tortured and left un guarded by drunken brothers, he escapes with the help of his murdered steward’s son and a selkie, (that tale has it maybe the animal form of his long departed mother). This is where the story really gets page turning interesting. Despite the obvious attraction that Ronan feels for Rhoni and she for him, he is so steadfast in his heartfelt need for revenge for his departed wife and son, his steward, and the other murdered members of his keep that he was trusted to take care of, that he won’t act upon it be until he can regain his keep and avenge the deaths. He really doesn’t know that he will ever be able to act upon it. The strange but worthy relationships between, Normans , Saxons and Irishmen will keep you reading until the end! I will definitely go back and purchase or borrow the other books in this series to read more of this legacy.

SETTING: IRELAND, WALES AND ENGLAND, 1097AD
This is Hylda Rhonwen de Montbyrce’s (Rhoni) story, the youngest child of Rambaud and Mabelle de Montbyrce. She is now 20 and no man has caught her heart. She despairs of finding a man with whom to share love as she sees with her parents. A trip to Wales to attend the installation of the daughter of family friends as the new Abbess results in the group rescuing an injured man and his companion adrift in a small boat, both near death from dehydration. The stage is set for an epic love story to unfold!
A ruthless pair of brothers, supported by mercenaries, overtake a castle in Ireland; renegade Saxons attack a group of travelers; a visit to the Welsh mountaintop fort where Rhoni was born, where the injured Lord regains his strength and gains an ally in the Welsh prince—all these events and places are important in the development of this engaging story.
CRITIQUE: An exciting storyline with a strong Hero who has undergone horrendous suffering, physically and emotionally, in the overthrow of his keep. The heroine is a brave young lady, unafraid of letting her heart love a physically damaged man, as she sees the strong man underlying the surface wounds. We see Rambaud and Mabelle as they watch their youngest fall in love with an Irishman, (not their first pick for their well-brought up Norman daughter). Many familiar Welsh characters from other books make an appearance as the plot moves through Wales, giving another sense of continuity with the past. A good story, strong Hero and beautiful heroine, with a HEA ending makes for an enjoyable book.

Ronan MacLachlainn homes has been invaded, his wife and unborn child murdered and he himself tortured within an inch of his life. Conall his trusted servant saves his life and they escape to live another day. Ronal and Conall both seek a place to recover from Ronan’s wounds and he burns for vengeance to reclaim his hereditary Irish lands. Rhoni de Montbryce is a spoiled Anglo-Norman heiress who spots him in the water when she hears the cries of a seal and she finds Ronan and Conall nearly dead drifting in the water in a small boat. Rhoni instantly feels there’s a connection to Ronan, but he is the wounded warrior who’s set on revenge. He knows there’s no place in his life for Rhoni, not until he puts the past behind him. I love this captivating story of Ronan and Rhoni, the wounded warrior and the strong dependent woman Rhoni who is drawn to him. Can this wounded hero find redemption and a love that makes him whole again? She longs for a man to love and a marriage like her parents, she feels Ronan is her destiny and love, she just needs to convince him to take a chance. There many twists and turns in this story that will you find it hard to put this book down. Great story 5 STARS*****

I received this book as an ARC and am new to this author. I very much enjoy reading medieval so was looking forward to reading this one and it didn’t disappoint. It had a story of tragedy, suspense, action and romance. I felt the characters and there were many, lived up to expectation and were well written. But I did find it difficult in the first few pages to get my head around the names as most of the characters started with R or Rh but once I knew who each character was and their relationship in the story, I really enjoyed it. These characters all came from the books and as this is book 4 of 4, it would have been so much better if I had read the first books as then I would have known the names. I am sure I will go back and read the books that came before due to the many references to the past. There was a small amount of sex in it and as usual this reviewer skipped it but it didn’t change my enjoyment of this book. I would suggest those who like medieval to read it.

Another #1

This is first Irish Medieval Romance that I have had the joy to stumble upon. And Túr MacLachlainn is a magical setting complete with seals & selkies! Give me the tang of salt water and the cries and caws of seabirds plus sand beneath my toes and I am in heaven. Add flawed heroes along with those who love them and a downright nasty plethora of scalawags both in the land of Eire and England and all elements are set for a fantastical tale of love and derring-do.
And if you're a stickler for reading books in sequence, please treat yourself and jump ahead a few for this, it is well worth the chance.
If further incentive is needed, I am putting thus book of Anna's on my MUST read more than once list, and if I did that to every great book I've read I'd never have time for new discoveries. Ahoy, y'all,...

Ronan MacLachlainn is the lord of Tur MacLachlainn, his family has lived here for generations. On the horizon, evil lurks and all will change. Rhoni de Montbryce, the daughter of the Earl of Ellesmere, goes on a trip with her mother. To see where she was born and to meet the man who kidnapped her mother, but treated her very well.
This is a complicated story, about the Montbryce's and Ronan. Anna Markland never disappoints. Her books are well written and keep your attention. There are sad moments, like when the bad guys kill his wife and unborn child or when they proceed to torture him.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Ronan's story begins in Ireland with a wallop. The first page is gripping and heart-rending. The story doesn't let up from there. Rhoni, a naive young noble woman, soon grows leaps and bounds as challenge after challenge are thrown in the couple's path. She becomes a heroine fit for a Dark Irish Knight. Ms. Markland's knowledge of history, languages and the British Isles ensured I became a happy traveler transported to another place and time.
