I usually like to space out my reading between volumes, but with this one, I just couldn’t wait.
Old Boy is an incredibly gripping read that keeps you flipping through the pages at a rapid pace.
While it doesn’t rely heavily on action, the real draw is the mystery surrounding the protagonist’s incarceration and his past. That mystery keeps you on edge, eager to discover what happens next.
It’s a fantastic series, and I’m glad I picked it up, though I wish the physical edition’s quality was better.
Old Boy has sort of a "show, don't tell" policy, which makes it easier to read, as there aren't many dialogues or narrations. But this doesn't take away anything from the book, because the story and the artwork never fails to express itself. This is what has made Old Boy so fun to read, so far.
The story continues as the imprisoned man tries to find out why he was locked up for ten years. He's slowly discovering more things about his past, and the slow burn makes this story very interesting.
For 10 years I was locked up in a room, something like a "private prison". Who'd believe such a thing? Anyway, tonight... for the first time in ten years, I've breathed the air of the world...
While I wait for the remaining volumes of Judge to arrive, I thought I'd start reading my volumes of Old Boy which have been sitting on a shelf for far too long.
Shinichi Gotō was kidnapped, by forces unknown, and kept in a small cell with only a television for company. Mysteriously released after 10 years he now has a singular focus. To find those responsible and to discover the reason for his incarceration.
For anyone who has seen the film, there will instantly be obvious differences, including the duration of his captivity. I look forward to finding out where the original story takes me!
I probably need to not read manga when I'm tired. A couple of times I started reading the wrong way and got confused. Oops.
I picked up this and the third after reading the first and I enjoyed this one as much. The story seems to be progressing at a pace I feel good about, and I already hate one of the characters with a fiery passion. In other words, it's all good.
Continuing to roll on, this manga is very much "pages packed with detailed panels and almost no dialogue" until suddenly it drops a full conversation and puts away the letters for another 20-30 pages
Protag has a gig job now, zeroed in on his "prison" location and bothered to find an old acquaintance to give the story that next boost
alright the train has left the station. goto's coming into focus as a Real Person instead of a very flat "guy who was in prison" so that's nice.
but from what i can tell, it really seems like all of the best, most memorable elements of the movie were invented entirely for the movie. which is a shame because that's a fuckin hoot and a half.
It’s getting slightly better, but I think I’m more a fan of the film (so far.)
My only other complaint is that I feel like the characters aren’t especially likable. Gotō comes across as rigid and all of the women portrayed in this manga are air-headed and oblivious.
Alright, now we're starting to get somewhere! The tangled Web is starting to be shown, piece by piece but however close Yashimoto/Goto thinks he's getting, his nemesis is one step ahead and out of reach.
Some cool moments and I still like the style of it. Rather drawn out and the characters, especially the women, are very shallow. Certainly more interested in narrative concealment than anything else; however, it’s certainly involving.
