A fleeting pleasure is the sweetest seduction...

David Lauriston couldn't be less interested in King George IV's first visit to Edinburgh. But with Faculty of Advocates members required to put on a minimal show of patriotism, David makes an appointment with his tailor for a new set of clothes-only to run into a man he hasn't seen for two long years.

Lord Murdo Balfour.

Much has changed since their bitter parting, except their stormy attraction. And when Murdo suggests they enjoy each other's company during his stay, David finds himself agreeing. After all, it's only a temporary tryst.

Amidst the pomp and ceremony of the King's visit, Murdo's seduction is more powerful than David ever imagined possible. But when other figures from David's past show up, he is drawn into a chain of events beyond his control. Where his determination to help a friend will break his body, threaten his career, and put at risk the fragile tenderness he's found in Murdo's arms.

Warning: Contains a lowborn Scottish lawyer with no love for the aristocracy, but more than enough passion for this highborn lord. Political intrigue, kilts, explicit m/m trysts, and men who epitomize "knight in shining armor."

Suuuuuper strong.

Two years has passed since our men have seen each other, but the chemistry is just as palpable as before. And the feels.... ah, the feels! They will slay you.

I launched right into this one after finishing Provoked, and I'm so happy I did. After the first one left me hanging, I just had to know what happened next. And the story just continued to progress beautifully.

I liked this more self-assured David. He was more settled, more mature, but I loved that he retained that sense of honesty that defined him. He was more at peace with his feelings for Murdo, and he allowed the relationship to become something greater than just possibilities.

I also adored this more determined Murdo. Murdo was also less... arrogant, less intimidating, and more focused than ever on David. Murdo is a force to be reckoned with when he sets his mind to something, and he set his mind on David. The way they come together, slowly but like a tornado slowly spiraling towards something inevitable, was magical to witness.

The plot is also rich with excitement, enough to keep you on your toes but not enough to detract from the brewing romance. You won't be able to look away.

The setting? Gorgeous.
The romance? Getting more and more intense.
The plotline? Exhilarating.
The dialogue? Period-appropriate and lovely to read.
The sex? Hotter than ever!

Romancy, extremely well written, and a beautiful story, this is shaping up to be a romance for the ages!

I love this series, and most of all Murdo, so much.

I'm glad that this time I didn't go with the e-books as before, but bought the new audiobook - bundle narrated by Hamish McKinlay. His narration is stellar, especially Murdo's voice made the reading experience richer.

Listening to Murdo falling for David... wow, beautiful and touching.

This is shaping up to become an all time favorite series and one of my favorite MM couples ever.
I loved everything about this second installment.
Most of all I loved the slowly growing intimacy and emotional connection between David and Murdo.

David woke to birdsong, the smell of morning chocolate…and an aching arse.

It’s been two years since they have seen each other. David Lauriston, is growing his law practice and Lord Murdoch Balfour, is fully entrenched in aristocratic BS. King George IV is about to make his first visit to Edinburgh and Murdo has been sent by his father to represent his family at the event.

Gay romance
1823 Edinburgh
Palpable chemistry
Size difference
Historically authentic
HOT intimacy

I really appreciate this authors sensitivity to the struggles of women and gay men in this time period.

*Excellent narration of the audiobook by Hamish McKinlay.

4.5 stars rounded up. Okay! I am getting it! I am totally seeing the vision! I'm sorry I called you and ass Murdo, but in my defence, you really were. I am now thoroughly excited for the final installment.

This was such a delightful expansion upon the characters and world building of book one. I loved that the absence of two years from each other's lives just made their physical chemistry even hotter.

The stakes were so much higher and I was shocked at how absorbed I was in Elizabeths plight and the scheme to rescue her from her horrid husband. Elizabeth is such a surprisingly wonderful side character despite her brief page time.

The emotional softening of Murdo was so satisfying to witness, with him admitting how much he missed David during their seperation and his realisation of how precious David is to him. Like my dude is so obviously in love but is a complete Dumbo about emotions, so is just not taking that final step of realisation lol. And it is so lovely seeing David slowly coming to terms and accept himself and work through that internalised shame and homophobia to be able to participate in the physical intimacy of his relationship with Murdo and enjoy their connection together.

The audiobook remains a delightful listen and Hamish McKinlay does a great job. Every time that Scottish accent talked about 'bullys' and 'brutes' my brain melted out my ears.

CW for domestic violence and period specific misogyny. Also mentions of off page anonymous hookups both David and Murdo have during their seperation.

God this book was amazing!!!!!!

I dove right into book 2 of this series the day after finishing Provoked. True, the ending to book 1 was abrupt and I wanted to know what happened next. But mostly because the main characters, David and Murdo, haunted me. I couldn’t stop thinking about them and wondering where the story would go next.

I loved this book. It was romantic and endearing and tender. It was action-packed, suspenseful, and heart-racing. It was sexy and smoldering and *sigh*-inducing.

In this book, we saw David come into his own. He’s successful, he’s more sure of himself, he’s more open and daring. Yet, he remained his steadfast and honorable self. I loved his integrity…in both books. But, I really loved seeing him find his voice in book 2 – asking for what he WANTED. And what he wanted was Murdo.

And Murdo…he’s such a MAN…and I mean that in the sense that he’s the protector and the care-taker and the he just MAKES SHIT HAPPEN and you just KNOW everything’s gonna be ok when he’s there. I lurve him so much. And I LURVE him for David so much!

The growth of their relationship, their conversations, their soul and heart opening admissions to each other about their pasts…gah!!!!...I ate this UP…I savored every word! You can actually SEE them falling in love as you turn each page and it’s…amazing.

There is a side story about a character, Elizabeth, that is SO SO EXCITING. I held my breath every time this storyline came on page. …intense and powerful and showed off the best of our MC’s. The range of emotions (anger, fear, anxiety, hope, sadness, worry…) caught me off guard and I found myself just hanging on for the ride!

The ending carriage ride was so freaking sweet and romantic I cried and did NOT want my percentage marker on my Kindle to go higher. I don’t want to wait for book 3. I want…I WANT…I NEEEEEED it…NOW!

I initially was going to rate this 4.5 stars…it was near flawless for me. But since I still can’t get the boys out of my head and the beauty of this book still fills my heart, I’m going all in with 5 stars!

Bring on book 3!!!

This is shaping up to be my absolute favourite historical romance yet.

Everything I loved about book 1 still stands:
The setting is rich and immersive, the side plots compelling, the narration absolutely swoon-worthy, the writing incredibly sharp, emotional and engaging.

And while I’m still very much in love with David (always!), this book really let Murdo shine. Jeez, his vulnerability in this one nearly killed me. I loved every scene they were in together. The hand holding? The glimpses of possessiveness? The kind of forever feelings, that are clearly starting to show? Pure swoon and perfectly paced.
I also could not get over their first time sleeping together. So intense, so hot, so beautifully tender.

The two year gap between the first book and this one was a bit of a slap in the face, but on second thought, so SO necessary to let Murdo and David grow individually before they meet again. Because when they do, everything feels more intense, more emotional, more electric. They’re quickly becoming one of the absolute favs 🥹

Also: I loved Iain in this and all his ‘radical’ views about love and hate, about equality, fairness and compassion. I had actual goosebumps listening to some of his lines. He added so much depth and moral clarity without ever feeling preachy.

I don’t ever want this series to end 😩

4,5 ⭐ I LOVE THEM, YOUR HONOR 😩

It’s been two years since David and Murdo parted ways not so amicably, and we have them together yet again, and WOAH. Just... what?? I kinda expected them to see each other and Murdo to promptly drag David to a dark alleyway for a blowjob but instead I got *gasp* an honest, heartfelt conversation 😳 Not only that, I got tenderness and desperate yearning and Murdo gazing at David with soft eyes (when he wasn’t eyefucking him, mind you) and- wow 👁️👄👁️

It’s safe to say the third MC here was character development, shifting the tone of the story quite considerably and in a hopeful direction. Because yes, they were still so hot together, but more than that, it was affectionate and intimate with such bittersweet undertones. David is yearning for someone he sees as unavailable in the long term, he’s constantly aware of the expiration date their encounters seem to have, yet he’s unable to resist the temptation.

And if their chemistry was sizzling before, now it’s practically explosive - all those praises Murdo kept showering David in while being intimate made me fan myself AND melt into goo!

Speaking of Murdo. Who even IS this kind, gentle, considerate man so obviously enamoured with David?? (While still retaining that possessive side, thank god!) I truly feel like I can’t properly see inside his head, and it makes me want to open up his skull and take a peak- ehm. Sorry, seems my current Killing Stalking reread is showing 👀

My only niggle is that while the character development for both men is astounding, most of it happened during the time skip, and we mostly just see the beautiful result, not the actual process - and I would’ve LOVED to see some of it!

The drama near the end had me in a chokehold, my god. I love Elizabeth’s storyline in the sense that it breaks my heart and enrages me simultaneously. I need to see that girl have her happy ending! If I could also see a few characters suffer at the same time, that would be fabulous.

Jumping straight into the third (and the last 😭) book!

You guys, this book 😭. It was absolute perfection.

I agree with everyone who said they get better as the story progresses. Murdo and David were so sweet together. I loved seeing their relationship grow.

And as a nice addition, Euan meeting Elizabeth again and helping her escape? 10/10, didn't see that coming but I am here for it! I do love a secondary character getting a bit of romance on the side.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️  and I'm in love!!!

Is it too early for me to say that this will be my favorite m/m historical series ever? Maybe, but I don't think so... I know that there are plenty of series out there to discover, but... Guys, you will have quite a difficult, if not impossible stand to come even close to Murdo, that's for certain.

I could never resist a man in a kilt on a black horse...

This story was simply dazzling and profoundly romantic. My heart felt like it was melting with love...

"Beguiled" is the second installment of a series entitled "Enlightenment”. It is set in a historical period ... and trust me when I say that this series is SO GOOD, I actually forgot that I dislike the historical genre in general. The writing is a beauty but I guess the strength lies in the characters.

David was simply a darling – a gentle soul, he had an ingenuity flair in him that I found endearing. However, he also became stronger and more courageous than the first book without losing his integrity . There was a significant change in him, after the encounter with Murdo two years ago. Previously, David thought of being with a man as sin – even if he refused to live a lie and marry a woman. But here, David admitted that it started to make him angry, how society judged a man who lied in bed with another man.

And Murdo Balfour, ah, Lord Murdo... In Provoked I found him as this dashing arrogant rake who sometimes looked down to David’s principles. But here, oh, MY, how two years changed. He was less arrogant, David definitely got under his skin – and Murdo admitted that he missed David. Here, Murdo was like David’s “knight in shining armor”. Not that David was a damsel in distress, but Murdo ensured that David’s well-being and needs were taken care of. Even if David didn’t tell Murdo everything.

What could I say about the two of them? Their chemistry was lovely, their sexual tension was gorgeous ... I LOVED that first meeting after two years. GAH THE TENSION!!! Did you know, I had my hand LITERALLY on my chest almost throughout the whole book, because it was so, so romantic. I LOVED how they talked to one another, the soul barring session ... and then, the sex.

*Sigh, the sex*.

I actually sent a text message to Susan – who finished the book before I did, asking whether they would have penetration sex. She said they did, and it was “glorious”. Well, GLORIOUS it was. So good and so worth the wait!

And the ending? Well, it’s not completely HEA yet, we still have book 3 coming, but it was less subdued than book 1. It was passionate, it was tender, it was ... flawlessly hopeful *sigh*

But wait, it wasn’t just about the romance – there was quite an action and suspenseful plot here too. It involved Lady Elizabeth (whom in "Provoked" had a crush over David) who’s trapped in a marriage with an abusive man. We got David – and his friend Euan – trying to get Elizabeth to escape and it was intense!!

So final words? It is simply one of the best romances I’ve read this year. It is the kind of story that stays with me after awhile. Also a kind of story that can make me break my own policy of not doing re-reading. So yes, I could only gave my rare 5-stars. I couldn’t find anything to complain. Not a single thing – except maybe WHY BOOK 3 IS NOT OUT YET!?!

This M/M historical series continues to impress.

Picking up two long years after the events of Provoked, David Lauriston and Lord Murdo Balfour are reunited when Murdo returns to Edinburgh during the much publicised and celebrated King’s visit of 1822.

With their last contact ending on somewhat of a penitent note, the chance to share time together once again is an opportunity too good to pass up, regardless of the potential risks—namely risks of the heart.

Where David was once hesitant and even at times regretful of his interactions with Murdo in the past, he’s since learned, in the aftermath of their previously brief time together, that life is too short for regrets. Where shame of his sexual proclivities once ruled his thoughts and actions, David’s impassioned and oftentimes provocative exchanges with Murdo allowed him to open up his mind, heart and body to a world of new and stimulating experiences that he hasn’t easily forgotten.

Knowing, once again, that their time together may be short, David and Murdo try to schedule in as many shared moments as possible, both private and public, all while carrying on with their professional and civic duties during the King’s renowned visit.

To add further complications to their already complicated lives, David becomes immersed in helping Elizabeth Chalmers (daughter of his boss) out of a violent marriage, using the assistance and know-how of his old friend, political radical Euan MacLennan.

This one started slowly and sedately, but once all the pieces were effectively in place, the story really took off, holding my rapt attention and making my heart skip and swoon as the tension and romance reached a crescendo.

I enjoyed the plot and the character interactions immensely, and I continued to be awed by the way Chambers so vividly created her own (impressively detailed and accurate) version of 19th century Scotland.

As for the relationship between David and Murdo? Well, let’s just say I’m appropriately swooning over these two men and their perfectly paced romance.

I’m now eagerly looking forward to reading the final chapter of their story in Enlightened.

Rating: 4* of five

One quote to rule the book:
A man will fight for hate for a long time, but he will fight for love to the death.

Every single moment of this entry into the series is about Murdo's hate for the way his world wants him to behave, and his love for David, which is (he very much fears) unreciprocated.

It is also about how deeply David detests his weakness of character that forbids him to turn his face to his true love and say, simply and directly, "I love you, Murdo."

These men fight like wounded Spartans at Thermopylae for the victory of love...for others...and end up with a situation neither could've planned, predicted, laid a course for, and that perfectly suits their almost desperate hunger for space and time to revel in the love they share.

And can't admit they share because Rules and Reasons.

The historical aspects of the series please me, the characters are limned economically if, at times, a bit repetitively...one more of Murdo's "fractional relaxation"s and Imma cut a bitch....and the timelessness of men's cowardliness in the face of vulnerability makes volume 3 a must-read. Reviewer Heather_k described the series as one long novel. I concur. Start at the beginning, read to the end; there is short fiction entry, Seasons Pass, which is best read for free before reading this book; unless, of course, like a certain other reviewer who has vanished into the memory of pixels, the story makes you "rageface" by the 20% mark in which case Kindle it not.

All the feelings that were missing from book 1 were in this one! These guys! ❤️❤️❤️

Two years ago they shared some passion and went their separate ways. But they didn’t forget.

The memory of how he’d felt two years before, after they’d parted, lingered still. The blackness that had descended on him afterwards. The long, endless downhill from the mountain. Down and down.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about you after I went back to London,” Murdo said roughly.

Now they are both back in Edinburg, and they can’t stay apart from each other. David is still unsure. Scared. Hesitant. But Murdo. Murdo won’t let him go.

”But let me make it plain so there’s no misunderstanding: what we shared two years ago wasn’t enough for me. What we’ve had this time isn’t enough either. I want more.”

I love David and Murdo. The passion and heat and affection. I love all the side characters. Euan and Elizabeth. And all the feminism.

“No. Man’s oppression of Woman is the first, and worst, act of oppression in human history. Until we repair that, how can we repair the other inequalities all around us? Every child grows up witnessing this most grievous form of slavery. We drink it in with our mothers’ milk and take it for the natural order. But it is not.”

I hope they all get their impossible HEA. Book 3, here I come!

Yes, my lord! What a series! 4.5
STRONG, SOLID!
I enjoyed this one more than the first.
Got to see a softer side of Murdo.
Got to see a little flexibility in David.

I love how Chambers doesn’t shy away from social ills of the period such as women’s rights.

This isn’t much of a review, but believe me this is an amazing historical MM series that’s slowly building steam and heat!

FANTASTIC narration by Hamish McKinlay! 😍😍

2020 reread: Still 4 stars, and I've added some thoughts below, at the end of my original review.
______

A solid second entry in the series, yet I didn't find it as exceptional as the first. Even so, there were a few times when an insight or an emotion was expressed so poignantly, so movingly, that it pierced me right through the heart.

My (relative) dissatisfaction was due to the changes in Murdo's character. In the first book, I didn't like him. But I liked that I didn't like him. It was obvious that he would have to undergo a transformative journey in order to become a man capable of falling in love. In other words, he was due for a comeuppance -- and I wanted to see him get it.

But when the story picks up, two years down the road, Murdo is no longer the same domineering, sarcastic, emotionally distant and vaguely manipulative bastard he was in Provoked. Instead we get a kinder, gentler Murdo -- which means his transformation (perhaps precipitated by having known David, perhaps not) occurred off-stage. I felt cheated.

So I'm still not convinced that Provoked shouldn't have been a stand-alone novel. Of course in that case it wouldn't have been a romance; it would have been something I'd have to file on my "Broke My Heart" shelf. I'm hoping book 3 will make me grateful that this is a trilogy.
______
2020: I spent most of the reread wondering why I'd originally given this only 4 stars. The mood, the setting, and the characterization were all complex and nuanced. And this time around I had the benefit of knowing that Murdo's personality shift, which I griped about in my original review, was addressed to my satisfaction in Seasons Pass -- which is chronologically #1.5 in the series, but should only be read after book 3 because of spoilers.

Yet in the end my choice of 4 stars held. There's a subplot -- although "subplot" makes it sound too trivial, when in fact it's what drives the second half of the story -- that was great as a premise, but I felt was somewhat lacking in execution. Plus, the story ends deep in trope territory, and that trope simply isn't one I enjoy. So, 4 stars it is, but it's a damn good book with remarkable MCs, and I'm eager to continue with the series reread.

Third time and it gets to me even more.

---------------------------------
LOVED IT : It’s so compelling that, even if it’s my second read, I can’t get enough of it : the historical background, David’s turmoil, the passion and hotness between David and Murdo ….and what to say about Murdo….**endless sighs**

Going straight to the next instalment !!!

---------- Initial review ----------
2nd part of the enlightenment series : the riveting journey of David and Murdo set in the 19th century in Scotland. This is getting better and better. As mentioned in my review of the 1st book, if you’re not into historical fiction (which is my case), it’s really 100% worth a try

Now that the scene and characters have been set up in the first book, this part is about the building of the relationship between David and Murdo at the time of the visit of the King of England in Edinburgh, in a society where women are considered “properties” of their husband.

This part is pure mix of romance, emotions, suspense. Why rating it as "a favorite" ? Because I hold my breath and my pulse rate was high while reading this book. I was enthralled by the development of the relationship between David and Murdo, by their admissions, bit by bit, of their feelings for each other and by the plot.

“You saw yourself as an abomination,” Murdo interrupted flatly. “I wanted you to see you as I see you.”
“And how exactly is that?”
“As someone— “Murdo broke off and looked away, nostrils flaring as he breathed out his anger. “You’re not an abomination, David. You’re—beautiful.”

Beguiled is where Murdo comes into his own. He enchants and ensnares, not only David, but the reader as well. His character development will leave you swooning as if you’re in some kind of Victorian period piece.

David and Murdo reunite during the occasion of King George IV’s historic visit to Scotland, when Murdo travels along as a member of the king’s envoy. It’s been two years since the former lovers parted on a bitter note. Murdo regrets his previous harsh words and has evolved during their separation. He’s become humbler. Vulnerable. More open with his feelings. He drops his cynical mask in private and isn’t afraid to tell David that he wants more.

“I don’t know what this thing between us is,” Murdo said, and he sounded genuinely bewildered. “But I can’t give it up. I can’t give you up.”

David is doing well now as an established lawyer, but he’s still an idealist at heart. His selfless nature compels him to help others no matter the risk to himself. Two figures from his past prove particularly dangerous for his well-being, his partner’s daughter, Elizabeth, and a young radical, Euan. David gets badly injured helping Elizabeth escape her abusive husband, and the book ends with him going to Murdo’s estate to recuperate.

So where does this leave David and Murdo? Their relationship is developing beautifully at this stage. They’re each coming to terms with their feelings in their own way. Murdo has accepted that he feels more than lust for David. This is new territory for him; he doesn’t really know what it means but he’s determined to make the most of it. As for David, he finally stops fighting his heart (and body). He’s always desired Murdo from the very beginning, but felt wracked with guilt about it. And although David has avoided emotional engagements in the past, he now chooses to throw caution to the wind and give in to his desires.

The steam is hot hot hot!

“That night had undone him entirely. Changed him. There was no going back from something like that, something that had scuppered so many of his personal limits. Later, when Murdo was gone, returned to London, the memory of it had tormented him. Yet it had fortified him too somehow. Sometimes he hated that he’d done it, and other times, it felt like the only sane thing he’d ever done in all his life.”

Absolutely swoon-worthy, and totally worth all the stars! Upped my rating accordingly!

original review

Two years is a long time.
Long enough to forget, long enough to learn.
David has not forgotten Murdo, but he has learnt something from their encounter:
"Life was easier sometimes, when you didn't know what you were missing."

And even the few hours he spent with Murdo have shown him that he is missing something. And when he meets Murdo by chance again and of course cannot stay away, he feels ...

"no regret, no panic.... (but) more at peace than he normally did, as though all the jumbled parts of himself had been set right overnight.

In short, David learns himself, and Murdo is only too ready to coax the other man out of his shell. It is a revelation for David when he realizes he is allowed a life and love, too. And my heart sighed with joy when he starts considering...

the possibility of tenderness and affection. The possibility of honesty, of being known by another. Things he'd ruled out for himself. Things that were too painful to hope for.

Loved the pull and push between these two, the simmering passion and love. Murdo is so in love (still) and does everything he can to 'keep' David, even jump over his own shadow. Their lovemaking is sweet and wonderful, with their affection so evident - even if neither can put it into words.

There is a lot of character development for David in this second instalment of the series. He starts 'seeing the light', but he isn't quite there yet.

Highly recommended.

Re-read 12/2021

David and Murdo are reunited after a two year separation and what a reunion!! Murdo who has no guilt in taking pleasure has softened, regretting their last goodbye and is keen to renew a friendship, whereas David is reluctant as he is not only plagued with guilt for what they did, but was also left bereft when Murdo left.

“Sometimes he hated that he’d done it, and other times, it felt like the only sane thing he’d ever done in all his life.”

I was so happy when they got together and the intimate scenes were passionate and moving. I love the author’s writing style and her use of prose such as “Oh, the luscious pull of those lips. The sinuous twining of that tongue.” The developing intimacy between these two was what really stood out and I will be rereading again and again. When Murdo asked David to sit on his lap, sigh!

“You saw yourself as an abomination,” Murdo interrupted flatly. “I wanted you to see you as I see you.” “And how exactly is that?” “As someone—” Murdo broke off and looked away, nostrils flaring as he breathed out his anger. “You’re not an abomination, David. You’re—beautiful.”

The plot kept me engaged and I was anxious for two characters, Euan and Elizabeth. The finale had me on the edge of my seat and although the ending was dramatic, it couldn’t have had a better outcome for David and Murdo.

I cannot wait to read the next book although I worry for these two, given the time setting. If you like m/m and historical fiction, you will not be disappointed.

I love them your honor🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

This series has me fully hooked. I’m so obsessed with this story, in these characters, in everything. David and Murdo have this incredible connection—fiery and magnetic, but also tender and emotionally rich. It feels like watching a beautifully choreographed dance unfold—seduction, vulnerability, love. I adore them both for completely different reasons, but together, they’re pure magic.

Murdo’s quiet adoration of David? Heart-stopping. He worships him, and it’s written in such a gentle, powerful way. And David’s slow unraveling, the way he starts to believe he’s worthy of love and desire—it broke me a little. In the best way. I could write pages of how perfect their intimacy is, but you have to read it to understand it!

The social commentary in this book is also so sharp—class divides, gender roles, women’s rights, and the subtle but brave exploration of same-sex love. It’s never preachy, just deeply woven into the world and characters.

I also have to say—I love Elizabeth and Euan to death, and I’m beyond excited that we’ll get a book about Captain Sinclair. A huge praise to almost all secondary characters 🙌

This entire series is becoming something truly special to me. I’m completely in love with the world Joanna Chambers has created, and I can’t wait to keep going. What I love even more is that each book, beyond just the romance, has a solid, compelling plot—with thoughtful reflections on society, class, and equality that add so much depth to the story.

”I don’t know what this thing between us is,” Murdo said, and he sounded genuinely bewildered. “But I can’t give it up. I can’t give you up.”
“Murdo—”
David didn’t know what else to say, so instead he raised one arm, curving it about Murdo’s neck, and drew him down till their lips met. He kissed Murdo, and it was like water. Like something necessary and life-giving. Murdo’s lips parted, and David deepened the kiss, for once the aggressor.
When Murdo finally raised his head, they were both breathing heavily.
“I’ve missed kissing you,” Murdo said.

I wasn’t Beguiled at all… But I’m completely ready to be Enlightened.

Mucho mejor que el primero, lleno de romanticismo y con un toque muy clásico. Maravillosos protagonistas y maravillosos secundarios. Me lo he bebido. A ver el tercero.

It's turning to be quite the journey for David and Murdo. This time it's not only about physical attraction but about mutual bond of trust and friendship that these two men establish in the course of the time they spend together when Murdo is back to Edinburgh.

Two years have passed since they have seen each other last time. And their parting was not amicable by any means but since the first glance it's like no time has passed at all. They step into it like into an old pair of slippers - comfortable and familiar yet not. David has changed as has Murdo. It's rather wonderful to watch those two interact both in public and private - every glance and every touch takes on new meaning. They finally share something more meaningful about themselves than superficial remarks - they share their past and how it shaped them.

David is more open and understanding about himself and his needs and Murdo, well, he falls deeper and deeper until he can't stop himself from baring his soul to David. This is an amazing love story between two men in times when they dared not express their feelings out in the open. It seems that Murdo is a nurturer and provider by nature despite his attitude and the way he cares for David in the end just shows how much he was hiding himself from David and the world.

Magnificently written, full of history and characters both old and new that bring something unique to the book adding to the intrigue of 1822 Scotland, to the story of two men who live with honor, responsibility, loyalty and fear to know what love might be like for them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

[This review covers Enlightenment books 1-3]

Historical romance is not typically my go-to genre, so it takes a lot of motivation for me to pick up a book, much less a series. Thank goodness for my GR friends filling my feed with love for this series over the last several months. If it weren't for that, I might not have ever picked this up, and what a loss that would've been 😭

I honestly don't even know what to say at this point. I don't think there's a single thing I would've changed. Even the "Murdo is a little shit" to "Murdo is top tier husband material" pipeline was perfect 🤣 I don't wish it had gone differently at all. If you've read this series, you understand. I loved the moment in book two when the switched flipped for me and I became completely enamored with Murdo. My heart went from begrudgingly intrigued to over the moon in love with him in a blink. David was a lovely character as well, but Murdo stole my heart 🥰

The thing that made this series shine for me was the character and relationship development. Everything was perfectly paced with events unfolding realistically, not in the way my greedy self wanted, which was for the best. This series proved I don't know what's good for me 😂 I probably wouldn't have gotten as attached to Murdo if I'd liked him straight away. I needed him to get under my skin first and then flip the script. That man is dangerous in the best of ways.

And David, what a precious little bean ☺️ He really needed things to go slowly so he had time to unwind all of the knots he had himself tied up in. Watching Murdo slowly untie those knots was beautifully done. I know I said I wouldn't change anything about the series, but if I could've had one wish, it would've been that David had been able to tell Chalmers about himself before he passed. My ideal scenario is that Chalmers would have accepted him, told him that love is love, and that it didn't matter that David was gay. It would've made my heart happy to know that David felt that acceptance, and that Chalmers knew David had found the love of his life too. I wanted that peace for the both of them. I don't think that was actually realistic for the story, but if wishes were horses, you know?

Last but not least, kudos to Hamish McKinley for doing an absolutely brilliant job with the audiobooks for the series! I so rarely come across Scottish accents in audiobooks, and his narration was a treat 😌

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Expected more*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Two years has gone since the previous book, and since lowborn and a lawyer David ‘Davy’ Lauriston (26) and Lord Murdoch ‘Murdo’ Balfour (in his thirties? 32? 33?) last saw each other. However, that doesn't mean the spark is lost; it's grown strong. With a little action (though not much) and a growing connection between the characters, the book was a alright read. Although it wasn't better than the first one, nor did it live up to my expectations. I struggled a little bit with feeling the connection between David and Murdo, and I also uncertain of how I felt about the change of Murdo's personality; gotten softer of sorts. I liked him being intimidating... On the the next book.
“There wasn’t a bit of innocence or purity in him. He was sinful and cynical. Unapologetic. He cared nothing for the world. He just ate its fruits and roamed its wilds and didn’t need anyone.”
