Jake, Don, and Maggie are three strangers living in the rural Midwest. They each wake early one late spring morning to find that nothing works—phones, cars, clocks. Everything involving electricity is dead. As the reality of what has happened comes to light, they begin to leave their homes, some in search of answers, others in desperate need of help. People around them are dying, planes are crashing, riots are forming, and no one can do anything about it. The three eventually cross paths and head into an uncertain future together in hopes of again finding balance—homeostasis—in this new world without power. That is, if they can survive.
I loved this book! I was immediately pulled into the story and had a difficult time putting it down. I really enjoy reading this genre of book and I was pleased to not have any zombies show up...they just really aren't my favorites. :) I really enjoyed all of the characters and I liked how even though they all were from varied backgrounds, ages and personality types they quickly formed their own little "family". They really did care for and about each other. My two favorite characters were Maggie and Jake. As soon as I had finished the book I immediately went to see if there was a sequel out for it as the storyline kinda left you hanging. Was happy to find out there is one coming in July, just disappointed to have to wait a bit for it as I'm extremely anxious to pick right back up where "Homeostasis Lost" left off at. Happy reading! :)
This was so slow that I couldn't continue with it. Three different people are sitting up in the early hours of the morning analysing how miserable their lives are when each realises that the clocks have stopped. Each of them wander aimlessly around their house checking various gadgets then start wandering around outside to see what has happened. Each one talks to various people and tell each other everything they have experienced that night and debate what might have happened then talk to ther people about the same things...it was getting to the mind numbing boredom by this stage and nobody seemed to get that an apocalypse was occuring. After 50 pages of this repetition I'd had enough. Very dull.
This book started slow for me. The first 10%, before the storylines converged, just seemed to lag. After that, I really enjoyed it and found myself thinking about the book even when I wasn't reading it. The character development is wonderful and they all seemed like very believable human beings. I like the nods to the older folks knowing the older ways (because it's true and all). I do hope there is a sequel and I want to read it, but I have a slight concern with where the story might go. We shall see. Overall, great work!
Excellent. Focuses on a small group of people who band together after the power goes out. shows the best, and the worst, of humanity. Brings into sharp relief how much we've forgotten about living. Take away the mod cons and we're a few days away from chaos.
Book ends on an interesting cliff hanger and would like to know if there is going to be a sequel.
Very surprised to find this well written thriller hiding out in the "cheap seats" on Amazon. Three different people experience the chaos of American society when solar flares take out the electrical grid. Using their life experiences, they find a way to make a new life. Can't wait for the sequel!
The beginning of the book spent a lot of time introducing you to the characters creating somewhat tedious reading. It takes that long for people to really all electricity is gone probably from a solar flare. How the characters react to the new world is the becomes the main focus. As in many post-apocalyptic books you have the usual unprepared population who either stick their heads in the sand or try to take what you have. Towards the end the group emerges as a new "family" and there is hint to the focus on the next book. I'm not particularly interested in continuing the series as the I read the same plot many times by other authors.
An interesting story of surviving and adventure! 😍
Buy this, is worth your time and money! One big mistake! Never feed dogs, 🐱 cats nor any animals chicken bones! Chicken scraps of bones, will splinter and cause death as Will several other good items 😐😐 xoxo
Wonderful character development. Yauchler's characters really come alive. And yeah, old people quite often know more about life than young people. But I do hate the book ending on a cliff hanger!!!
I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz and have been reading him for years. I can definitely see Koontz's influence on this novel but could also recognize Kyan Yauchler's delightfully unique narrative voice as well.
In a world where despair and tragedy would seem to rule, there seems to be a touch of hope around every corner in HOMEOSTASIS LOST. And while many reviewers have commented on the solar flares as the source of the power outage, the author brilliantly leaves that, too, a mere possible explanation. I like to be surprised by novels almost as much as I like being right about the ending. But I found this novel had more surprises than predictability. And the twist at the end definitely put Yauchler's sequel on the top of my "to read" list.
Pretty good for this genre. Hated the ending very much. Won't read a follow up book mostly because of where it would be headed. Fun amount of bad guys, the good guys are like able. Kept me entertained but the ending, please. It wasn't a dire ending just a setup for another book where I'm not sure I like the direction
I enjoyed this one and it made sense that all electics were fried - even generators. A slight cliff hanger ending but enough of a HFN to satsify. I will definitely be looking out for the next one. It was great to have a small town perspective, and the found need for the older generations knowledge and a diverse and motley crew have been pulled together.
I heard that it starts kind of slow, and even though I enjoyed it from the get-go, I must admit that it was not hard to put down and pick up again, either. The intensity begins to build about half way through and has a wallop of an ending, leaving the reader with an " O....M....G" !!!!! Now, I was hoping to read a good "stand alone" book but I definitely HAVE to read the next one.
Not a bad first start. I found that the book started very slowly with too much happening in too short of a time. Im not a big fan of the book that only covers a 12 hour span. This got better as the book went on, and i liked the characters. I'll read the next one.
I'm a sucker for a post-apocalyptic novel and enjoyed this for the most part. Good plot and characters but I don't like endings that just set up for a sequel.
