Until now he has remained a mystery, leaving only a few sentences, the letters of his bankruptcy, a mistress’ notarized complaint - and the most glorious, compassionate paintings ever to astonish the eye.
The first pure biography of this enigmatic legend, Rembrandt’s Portrait is a fascinating detective story in which, clue by clue, the man himself emerges as never before. Charles Mee, historian and playwright, renders a finely textured portrait of the artist against a richly described background of seventeenth-century life.
He captures the human Rembrandt, the ordinary man and unexpected genius. We see the youthful, arrogant poseur, son of a small-town miller, seeking a life of art amid the cosmopolitan bustle of Amsterdam in its heyday. We see the outsider struggling to rise without patron or court commissions, failing as an entrepreneur while immortalizing simple people in works of haunting complexity.
We see the inspired moments behind masterworks like TheAnatomy Lesson and Nightwatch and all the conflicting guises of their creator - bohemian and aspiring bourgeois, husband and lover, honored genius, penurious vagabond, and, finally, the essential dichotomy - the egocentric master who, despite his intense self-absorption, captured the diversity of humanity with extraordinary empathy, sensitivity, and grace.
Charles Mee’s Rembrandt’s Portrait is a major, enduring work.
Charles L. Mee is an American playwright, historian and author known for his collage-like style of playwriting, which makes use of radical reconstructions of found texts. He is also a professor of theater at Columbia University. (Source: Wikipedia)

European Renaissance Painting and Its Dominant Styles The Connection Between Mythology and Religion :
Before the emergence of Rembrandt, the renowned Dutch painter of the 17th century, painting in Europe was shaped by two main currents: mythological and religious narratives. Many artworks, inspired by the texts of the Torah and the Bible, depicted the lives of saints, miracles, and spiritual themes, while Greek and Roman mythology also played a significant role in shaping artistic traditions. Legends of Zeus, Aphrodite, and other deities provided the foundation for vivid depictions of power, love, tragedy, and heroism. These two styles flourished during the Renaissance, each influencing art in its own way.
Religious paintings were prominently displayed in churches and palaces, serving to convey spiritual concepts and evoke inspiration. In contrast, mythological artworks offered a space for imaginative storytelling and dynamic compositions. Alongside these traditions, portraiture and landscape painting also existed, though they held a lower status compared to religious and mythological themes. Portraits were primarily commissioned by aristocrats and elites, as art served as a medium for displaying power and social status. Landscape painting was often decorative rather than recognized as an independent genre, except when infused with mythological symbolism and deeper thematic elements.
A revolution in painting:
Rembrandt emerged in this artistic environment and, with his unique vision, revolutionized painting, which until then had been heavily influenced by the styles of Italian artists such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and others. He believed that the only true guide for an artist should be nature, rather than predefined rules. Contrary to classical traditions that emphasized ideal beauty, Rembrandt elevated realism to new heights. By selecting his models from ordinary people, he distanced painting from artificial aristocracy and gave it a democratic and humanistic dimension. His works not only reflected reality but also captured deep human emotions through dramatic lighting and masterful chiaroscuro techniques.
Rembrandt's Portrait: An Analytical Journey into His Life and Artistic Legacy :
Charles L. Mee approaches Rembrandt’s life with an analytical and narrative perspective, examining him within the historical and social context of his era. Unlike many conventional biographies, this work employs a collage-like storytelling technique, taking the reader on a journey through the artist’s life. Despite the numerous ambiguities surrounding Rembrandt’s life, the author successfully presents a tangible portrayal of him. Not only does he analyze Rembrandt’s works, but he also utilizes historical sources and the social atmosphere of the time to offer a psychological insight into his character. This approach allows the book, beyond providing historical information, to lead the reader to a deeper understanding of the artistic path of this famous painter.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is the inclusion of images and Rembrandt’s artworks within the text. These images not only aid in understanding his style and techniques but also make the narrative more visual and immersive. Moreover, they illustrate the evolution of his artistic approach over the years, allowing the reader to clearly observe his progression.
From the author’s analytical narrative to the documented images, all elements of the book come together to present painting not merely as an art form but as a tool for understanding history, society, and culture. The portrait of Rembrandt is a story of a man who defied past conventions and pioneered a new artistic direction. For those interested in exploring art beyond its surface, this book offers a pathway to grasp the thoughts, methods, and vision that linked painting to reality and freed it from the co constraints of idealized traditions.
P.S.: My approach to studying art history has always started with documentaries, various YouTube videos, articles, and similar sources before moving on to books. But this time, I did it the other way around—after reading the text and absorbing its deep narrative, it’s time to complete more pieces of the puzzle. This experience reminded me that every study path, whether moving from text to image or image to text, can be an enriching journey in understanding and learning about art. ✨️📖🎨
Any Rembrandt biography is hampered by the lack of first-hand information about Rembrandt, so much of this book is about Rembrandt's era, the places he lived. And there are many "educated guesses," sometimes multiple guesses: he might have chosen the subject for this reason ... or maybe that reason. What I really loved about this book was the reflections on individual paintings. This would have been greatly enhanced had reproductions been included, but I suppose that would have inflated the price. So the reader must be satisfied with reproductions of sketches, etchings and prints instead.
Just look at what he could do with a blob of colour: from his brush it could become an eye or a blade or a highlight on shimmering silk. Rembrandt seemed able to manipulate light and shade to serve his goal. But as this very readable biography shows, his attempts to manipulate people proved far less successful. It is strange that exceptionally gifted artists are such poor businessmen, and that they so wantonly betray the conventions of their contemporaries. It makes for a lively story.
Very interesting bio on Rembrandt. We all know his paintings, but I knew very little of his life. He was a late starter and shot up quickly to the point where he was buying and selling other great artist paintings, teaching many students and selling their art, creating prints of his and selling those.....and then it all stopped. Within 10 years, he was deemed too old fashion, difficult to deal with and also one that took commission money while not finishing the work.
This was a well written book, but would be better titled "Dutch painting and life during the time of Rembrandt".
As the author points out, there are only 7 extant documents that mention Rembrandt and none of his known peers kept diaries or journals. So this books, while weaving Rembrandt throughout as a narrative, does focus more on Dutch painting than on Rembrandt.
Additionally, I had the kindle version, so I don't know if a physical book included pictures. BUT, the kindle version did not, which, since the author described some paintings in detail, it would have been nice to see them.
How can you write about Rembrandt, describing in excruciating detail, all the known paintings he made, without having the painting displayed?
Since so little was known about him, this book fills in all the questions with probabilities. I wanted to like the story of Rembrandt, but he was certainty not a person who could be liked.
A very entertaining read. I found myself, halfway through, needing to go to the computer to view Rembrandt's work which was described in great detail in the book. The inclusion of various legal details of his life was interesting from the standpoint that he lived in the mid 17th century.
