Invited to attend a conference that is examining evidence that vampires from outer space have invaded Earth, the reader is asked to track down the vampires
Edward Packard attended and graduated from both Princeton University and Columbia Law School. He was one of the first authors to explore the idea of gamebooks, in which the reader is inserted as the main character and makes choices about the direction the story will go at designated places in the text.
The first such book that Edward Packard wrote in the Choose Your Own Adventure series was titled "Sugarcane Island", but it was not actually published as the first entry in the Choose Your Own Adventure Series. In 1979, the first book to be released in the series was "The Cave of Time", a fantasy time-travel story that remained in print for many years. Eventually, one hundred eighty-four Choose Your Own Adventure books would be published before production on new entries to the series ceased in 1998. Edward Packard was the author of many of these books, though a substantial number of other authors were included as well.
In 2005, Choose Your Own Adventure books once again began to be published, but none of Edward Packard's titles have yet been included among the newly-released books.
We only made it three choices into this book before it ended. There were a lot of pages of reading between each decision which wasn't the most fun but at least it actually involved Vampire Invaders. (The last book we read was about Ninja, we made 6 choices and never saw one damn ninja.) Our boys thought it was fun to put themselves in the book, so Cliff (5) said he was the vampire expert and Dean (3) said he was the Vampire.
We let them take turns making the choices. Cliff chose to go to New Orleans to find the vampire in the house. Dean said Cliff should bring the SWAT team in with him. Cliff said the SWAT team should shoot the piano (this made Dean cry). **Spoiler Alert** The Vampire's not in the piano, and everybody gets mad at you for shooting it and you get fired and the vampire is happy at the end. So out three year old was happy at the end, and our five year old said he should get to pick the next book. Can't wait.
Long stretches of no choices and limited creativity in the endings (vampire kills you) but it’s about vampires from space so thumbs up to that (even if it makes no sense).
Your previous history with the Vampire invaders has led you to the prominence whether you like it or not of the postion of head field investigator of the latests detection of Vampire invasion. Much art work set in spooky New Orleans to orbital space operation leads way to a surprising view of how the vampire invaders move through our modern world.
I loved the choose your-own-adventure books during my early years, and believe these are a great set of books for those who are new to reading their own books.
