The Atlanteans #3

The Far Dawn

Rate this book
The Far Dawn is the third and final novel in Kevin Emerson's Atlanteans series, bringing the story of Atlantean descendant Owen Parker to a high-stakes, dramatic conclusion. The Atlanteans series has been praised for its "emotional sucker punches" (Kirkus Reviews), "solid world building" (ALA Booklist), and "mind-blowing fantasy with characters you'll love" (bestselling author Michael Grant).

In The Far Dawn, Owen and Lilly are on their own, two of the three Atlanteans left on a journey to find Atlantis and protect it from the selfish greed of their nemesis Paul and Project Elysium. As time grows short and darkness overtakes the planet, Owen must face Paul's greatest treachery yet. He must choose—does he save the planet, or the people he loves?

Perfect for fans of Star Wars, Percy Jackson, or The Hunger Games, The Far Dawn takes readers on an explosive journey through time and space with heartrending decisions, pulse-pounding action, and fascinating questions of science and ethics alike. Both the paperback and ebook editions include extra content on "where science stops and fantasy starts" in the world of the series.

Plot: The story starts off with Lilly and Owen flying in Lük's craft. They pick up a signal, someone calling for help. They go to the place where the signal originated the Vista and meet Moros/Peter a human being turned digital character inside the Vista a digital utopia. Owen is almost downloaded into Peter's digital body as a way for Peter to get out. Owen and Lilly escape with the knowledge Peter had. They flee to the mountains. They find Paul there with Evan-turned-Kael/Leech by genetic experimentation. The two save Evan and find the Sentinel the spirit of Rana, Lilly's ancestor. The Sentinel says that Owen isn't the Aeronaut. The story turns to the original Three with Owen inside Lük's head. He sees the Three trying to destroy the Paintbrush of the Gods and failing. The world falls apart in the memory. Owen comes out of the memory and finds that Lilly and Evan are gone, taken by Paul. Rana and Owen go to Antarctica where the original city is rumored to be. They meet a band of military men. They almost save Evan and Lilly, but the Terra is taken. And the world is crushed by ice. Lilly, Evan, and Matheu (or however you spell his name) are killed. Owen survives with Rana's help. Owen makes coffins for all three and send them out to sea. He is cared for by the military before he leaves to go on a Flotilla to have changes done to him. He gets a bionic eye and a bar code on his finger similar to the ones on the elite. He then goes to an Eden, seeking out passage to Egress the ship in space. He gets on with the Nomads help. He, sadly, betrays them when he gets there. He doesn't blow up the station. Instead, Owen makes a deal with Paul to have Lilly revived. When about to talk to the Terra, part of his deal, he meets Lilly in her skull. They talk with Lilly making him decide he won't agree to help Paul. Lük comes in, crashing into the ship using a spaceship he repaired. Rana, Kael's spirit, and Owen escape the failing Egress. In the ship, they crash into missiles. Owen releases the Terra, saving the world. The Terra returns to the earth and starts healing the broken parts. Owen is revived in the Eden his story began in. Owen sees Lilly, and the story ends.

Character Development: Owen. Owen isn't a favorite character of mine. Love overtakes all rational thought. And he's the surprise attack. And he mopes. I don't like him. He's simply annoying. I do like that he is human. He mourns. He feels pain. It doesn't seem like the original Three are not human. Even during the flashback.

Problems: A problem I saw was the world building. I haven't read this series since the last book, book two. And the world wasn't defined anyways. LoRad? What? Could there be a section that describes the purpose of these inventions? That would have been good. I like knowing these things. (Either that or it was explained, and I don't remember.) The romance was a bit much. Kissing every moment. It was nice that Lilly didn't say 'I love you' as if it was 'pass me the salt'. It was a bit cute that they kept count. It was interesting why they did it. And the fact that they did it at all. I don't like the romance, though. I don't like romance in general. And this was part of the 'general'. The plot, while action-filled, is not too interesting. I don't particularly like it. It was just okay. The plot was a bit...dull. Betrayal. Fighting. It seems a bit repetitive. I don't know why I think that. It seems like that happens often enough. Fighting. Betrayal. Loss. It's becoming common enough.

Good points: 'Far Dawn' has certain things I like. Only a few. I like how Owen seems real. He goes through emotional and physical pain. He is real. He feels pain. He isn't indestructible. When Lilly is dead, he mourns. He builds coffins. He goes on a suicide mission. Knowing he'll die if he goes through with it. He is real. I like that. I like real characters. The plot is action. Action. Drama. Suspense. Surprises. It's odd that I don't like the story, but I have a minor like for the plot. It's the action that I like. Not the story itself.

Score: 7/10

Recommended: If you like the series. If you like dystopian with a supernatural twist.

The Far Dawn was a great conclusion to the Atlantean trilogy and I'm glad decided to give the series a try way back when it first came out. Book one was a pretty good start to the trilogy and continued to get better in book 2 and 3. I believe this book had a great balance of everything especially with the action and the romance. There wasn't too much of one thing, but just a very good mix of everything. I was also glad for the refreshers in the beginning of the book to jog my memory of the previous book. Those are always welcome and appreciated! Overall, the trilogy was good and I thought it was really different from a lot of the things I've read.

I think my favorite part of the trilogy is how unique it is. It took me a little while to warm up to it, but now I really like how different it was. Book three wasn't any exception. I liked learning more and more about the world and the characters and then finally wrapping things up. The conclusion to the story was awesome and I felt as if all loose ends were tied. I didn't have any unanswered questions and was left with a feeling of satisfaction. Owen and Lilly, our two characters, are still out to complete their mission of making things right, but things were not easy and so many things went down. I liked all the twists and turns and the ending was very satisfying. I was happy with what the author did with it. Overall, as stated before, this book was really good. And it was an easy read with all the refreshers. There was action, romance, adventure, but there was also sad moments as well. You know, everything that keeps you turning the pages :)

I know the review is kind of short, but I don't want to give spoilers to the other books in the trilogy!

Reviews of previous books The Lost Code & The Dark Shore.

Actual rating 3.5

The action gets amped up again in Far Dawn with this one being the fastest paced and the most exciting of the series.

There's not much for me to say about this book that I haven't said in a previous review. I did like Owen more then I did in Dark Shore but not as much as in Lost Code. More seems to happen in this book then in the others which I did appreciate. I worried some about where things were going but I like how it wrapped up even if I did think it was an unlikely ending. That might have had to do with my one larger problem with Far Dawn. There's always been a kind of mix between science and new age thinking in this series but it really gets turned up in Far Dawn. The whole plot is pretty much to save "The Heart of the Terra" which is basically Mother Nature in girl form. And I just had problems with the combination of the scientific and mystic. I think in my mind I consider these things separate. So the messing of them irritated me but on another level I found it intriguing how they were kind of balanced. It didn't totally work for me but I think the right person could adore the meshing of different ways of thinking.

Best book ever.
This book is awesome especially because of the starting in action and then calm down and then action again like in any other book of the atlanteans.
Another reason why i like this book is because i like reading distopia and sci fi and this book is perfect for these.

I received this free eARC novel from Edelweiss. This is my honest review.

From the synopsis, I take thought I would like this novel, but sadly it fell short. I couldn't connect with the characters, or even the setting of the story and I found myself skimming to find something I could connect with. Even though this book wasn't for me, I'm sure other readers will be able to enjoy it.

I felt that this book was the best in the series… up until the last chapter.

It feels too obvious that the girl gets brought back to life so they can end up together, I almost gave it 2 stars just for that.

It wrapped up the series well and had a better plot for me than the other 2.

(i really wish there were more stars to give!!!!)

that's right, i am CURRENTLY READING THIS, MAY 21...i got a copy (paperback ARC) last night at the Story Crush tour...Kevin Emerson had two for the ENTIRE tour, and i fricking got one!!!! sooo freaking ecstatic!!!! oh, and it looks read, and it was in his bag, so it's like i got HIS personal copy!!!

i received an ARC from the author at the Story Crush Tour!!!!

love loved loved every single second of this book!!!!
the ONLY downside to this book, is that it's the last one...no more Atlanteans...so sad.

you know how when you get to the end of a series and you think to yourself that one or two things would have been better done a different way, or slightly different, or just a little more info or closure on one aspect? well, not the case with this book! the ending was simply...gratifying...complete closure, all threads wrapped back up, and just overall satisfying...while i was suspecting one ending, and although it turned out to have a different ending, it was perfect, and i wouldn't have changed a thing! (which is a rarity for me, lol)

there were a few grammatical errors, the weirdest was a double period, but, this was an uncorrected proof and i believe these will get sorted out before printing...

i did have an oh-no-you-didn't-how dare-you moment at the penultimate chapter...SERIOUS FRICKING SPOILER AHEAD...DO NOT CLICK...maybe i won't even write it...

the prose is remarkable...even for simple things that don't have a definitive purpose...i want to say filler but it was so beautiful, it doesn't seem right to call them that...here're some examples:
(all text is subject to change, so quotes may not be exact in the final, print version.

"Rain began to pelt us, fat monsoonal drops, drumming on the sails and becoming a deluge" (pg. 4)
"It all combined to spin me in hopeless circles whenever i let my guard down." (pg. 5)
"I broke through and there was the oil-black sea, its debris-covered surface heaving with waves." (pg. 7)
"There were only curtains of water and galloping fogbanks..." (pg. 8)
"...with the faces of my lost family...waiting to greet me behind my eyes." (pg. 9)

and how beautiful is this one? i have like 5 stars and hearts next to it:
"The distant muffled screaming became sobbing.
Became silence. Became death." (pg. 174)

"The words sink in. Sink in and wash away my intentions, motivations, like what i thought were the deepest convictions were just footprints on a beach." (pg. 312)

"Maybe this will always be a struggle. We will always want. We will always yearn and desire and crave and miss and feel empty when we can't have what we want, but to believe in something...is to know your soul." (pg. 313)

how utterly beautiful are these two (above) quotes...i mean, deep, philosophical, and just beautiful...Emerson has real talent with words...how and which ones to use, how to string them together, and where and when to do it...BRAVO!

a common note i've repeatedly put throughout the book is:
Oh the prose!

and the list just keeps going on and on and on and on!!!!the writing was just so...impeccably and masterfully beautiful...and it starts early on, and continues throughout...it would probably be easier to just quote the entire freaking book than to list each one separately, thats how much amazing prose was packed into this book! a true masterpiece!

oh! and this is just a little pet-peeve of mine, but it REALLY bothers me when authors use "mike" for microphone...um, it's not spelled mike-rophone, now is it? FINALLY, an author uses "mic" (without using both spellings...)...maybe has something to do with his musician status?

note from page 45:
F-ing-a (censored), this good! SO much going on, action-packed...and not even 50 pages in

note from page 164:
Such amazingly beautiful prose, even for the simplest, most inconsequential things! thus making them anything but inconsequential!

note from last page, 342:
thoroughly satisfied-completely. never even considered this outcome-wouldn't change ONE THING-except for the fact that this was the end.

all in all, this is one damn fine superb book!

thank you for allowing me the pleasure and satisfaction to read this work of genius!

This book was a bit of a letdown. I wasn't totally captivated by the first book, but the second one was more fast-paced and had a few twists near the end that made me hope this book would get interesting because that book was a pretty quick and entertaining read. Spoiler Alert: It didn't.

Actual spoilers are needed to understand what I didn't like:

I feel like this book maybe doesn't deserve THAT much hate, but at the same time, screw that, because this could've been written much better and I reread/skimmed half the second book to recall pertinent details to read this sucker and now I feel like my time has been wasted. So boooo, book, boooo.

Meine Meinung:

I fell in love with this series despite the bad reviews from others and after finishing this last installment I am so happy I took a leap and read that first book. The story has a message that anyone can find meaning in. Owen experiences trials that would make men twice his age wither. The first book was a test of believing in himself, the second was a test of his strength as a person and this last one was a test of his belief. Owen Parker is pulled through the mud as Paul, the Terra, the truth and his own dark thoughts test him without rest or mercy. There are some tough moral and emotional decisions that he is faced with and he won't always make the right choice. There is doubt and there are mistakes that cost lives, lives that will weigh on Owen in ways he never thought. But Owen shows us that in our darkest corners there is a far dawn. He also shows us that faith is worthless until it is tested and Owen is tested harshly. This book really demonstrates the idea that believing in something has its consequences but when we persevere and grow the rewards are far more extraordinary. This trilogy was unique in its genre style like how they incorporate ancient mythology/history and good old dystopian sci-fi. It was thrilling with dangers around every corner and plot twists that I honestly never saw coming. The main character is someone who you aspire to be but isn't aol pure that he's untreatable. On short this trilogy and author are outstanding and brilliant.

This book killed me emotionally. At one point I totally wanted to kick Kevin's ass but turns out the ending was perfect and I can't wait to re-read it!

After reading first two books in the Atlanteans series I was thrilled to find 'The Far Dawn' on Edelweiss a few weeks back. And so, with warnings directly from Kevin about how I would hate him afterward, I went to a local cafe and dedicated my entire day to reading it. I live tweeted while I was reading it in a non spoilery way. It was fun to hear Kevin's thoughts based on my tweets.

Kevin's books pack a lot of punch and I was left worried about how Lily and Owen would survive once they left Desenna in 'The Dark Shore' . Opening the book with lyrical verse about three coffins couldn't have scared me any more if he had tried. Who had died? Who was thinking about this happening? What a prologue!

Not only is the beginning a surprise but in a shocking move a character we haven't seen since 'The Lost Code' rejoins the story in the part 1. Yes, I was shocked. In fact I wrote myself a note about it and tweeted about it as well!

Okay, maybe it was just me, or the mood I was in while I was reading this, but I just could not get into this book! The plot seemed to get more and more ridiculous and far-fetched (and that's saying a LOT, as I really enjoyed the previous two books and the kids grew gills, for crying out loud!) and the ending stretched my ability to suspend my disbelief way too far. It was also predictable and I saw it coming from miles away. I kept saying to myself-no...it's too obvious, he wouldn't do that! But then, he did that. And to realize that after everything Owen, Lilly, Leech and the others had been through, only three and one-half weeks had passed from the beginning of the first book to the end of this one, I just couldn't wrap my mind around that. So, I could have done without this one and rather wish the series would have wrapped up in two. The writing was good, the characters were the ones we love from the first two books (and the ones we love to hate-I'm looking at you, Paul!), we learn more about what happened to the Atlanteans, and the action scenes turn the pages themselves, but it just wasn't my cup of tea (this week). Better luck next book!

I am so happy to be done with this series. I really didn't even want to read this novel after the first two, but I do like finishing out series and not leaving them half read. So I put myself through a little bit of self inflicted torture to get it done.

I won't write a lot for this one, since I skim read it at most. If you liked the first two, then you will probably like this one as well. If you didn't like the first two, then don't bother with this one. It is not a series I will ever read again, for sure, and I'll doubtfully ever pick up another novel by Emerson either. The writing is weak, cliche, and feels a bit at times like a middle school child wrote the plot and the dialogue. And once again, it seems like Emerson didn't really know what the heck he wanted to do with this series. The plot goes off in a completely new tangent at least three times, and the end is so far from where we started in the beginning of the series that I honestly just stopped paying attention.

But hey, I finished it. Cross it off my list.

What an amazing conclusion to the series! Wow. It's not often that I like the last book in a trilogy better than the first, but Kevin Emerson pulled out all the stops on this one.

Owen and Lilly finally receive the answers they have been searching for, but the problem is, so does Paul. And Paul is always one step ahead. This was such an amazing adventure that spanned time, continents, and space. I loved Owen's struggle and the way his resolve wavered. I loved Lilly's strength and the way she pulls through for Owen. I loved the ending. Loved it.

It was such an emotional book. It had all the action and suspense to keep me turning pages, while making me feel more connected than ever to the characters and their story. I don't know what else to say other than it was the perfect ending to the series. This was by far my favorite book out of the trilogy.

Content: Violence and some mild language.

THE PAIN.

That's all I can think after reading it, I seriously thought she was dead and having those CP epilogue moments, so so dope!
And then she was back and I couldn't care more!! Since she was one of the personalities I loved the most on this trilogy, because let's face it Lilly was the best.

On the other hand, we had the lost of hope issue and at last I was like "I don't know how this is ever going to end", and then it did and it was glorious and so filled with love and nature, and memories and it was just perfect.

SO NO MATTER WHAT KEEP UP YOUR BELIEFS.

It is hard to say what I really think about this book. At the end of the Atlanteans #2, I was desperate to find out what came next. This one begins in a totally different place and under very different circumstances than #2. It left me very baffled. Then as I tried to read it, there were way too many duplications and oddball things happening. I think if I had the choice again, I would not read book #3 and just go through the rest of my life wondering what happened.

As a sci-fi fan reading about Atlanteans was a no-brainer. But the series ended up being a whole lot different than I expected & better for it. Environmentally conscious, thought-provoking, action packed post- apocalyptic dystopian with a moral compass & the best wink to Doctor Who in YA I have read (the Geronimo cookies)

Way different than I thought and way different from the rest of the series. I usually get frustrated from books that add way too much detail, but this book should have been longer to develop the plot and support the ending.

This is the third book in the series of The Atlanteans were all the questions are answered first and far most The Legend of the Three. Fast paced and enjoyable story that will have you on the edge of your seat saying "That can't happen!". Readers will be happy with the ending I know I was.
