4.2 Stars for an adorable sexy ghost story - very short but so brazenly entertaining
Sometimes I get so tired and annoyed with myself. Why has this wonderful Halloween novella been lying unread for so long? It's awesome ... and a very quick enjoyable read.
~ 1893 Caldwell Place ~
Robert Caldwell, a young journalist, has recently inherited a haunted old house. Sometimes it bubbles blood from the walls. Strange noises can be heard, almost as erotic moans. Immediate help is needed. ~ And luckely the ghost-hunter Simon Feximal arrives to help Robert to chase away the angry (and horny..) murdered ancestor who haunts in the old house at the nights.
Furthermore, is the ghost hunter Mr Feximal quite attractive, of course very serious, but also very broad-shouldered... Robert actually has a a bit difficult to concentrate on the horror subject.
K.J. Charles feels like a master in this small genre with very smart and so clever, a bit spooky, historical romances. Don't miss to read her well-written and always so wonderful stories (as the great The Magpie Lord series).
I will of course immediately read the second story, (Butterflies - a freebie), about these two gay hotties who swarmed around hundred years ago.
I LIKE - adorable, smexy and a bit scary - Booooo!!

That was an extremely hot way to exorcise a ghost.
What to expect from this ghostly yet sexy gem from K.J. Charles (it's official - her writing is just fucking great, in case you were wondering)?
A young silverfox (love it), nineteenth century gaydar (I'm all about it), a haunted house by a two century old horny ghost (which suffered from "coitus interruptus" for far too long), a way all ghosts should be exorcised () and sex (frigging scorching)!
If all ghost romances are something like this, I definitely would read more.

For 4500 words, this (very!) short story still satisfied me. I know that there are going to be readers who are not happy of having to pay $1.99 for such short story -- a VALID reason in which I can agree wholeheartedly -- but I'm also a reader who can let this go when I happen to favor the author. ALTHOUGH, because it's just too darn short, I can't give it my 4-stars rating just yet. I WANT MORE!!
Anyway, the story is practically a scene of when Robert Caldwell first met Simon Feximal, a ghost hunter who later became Caldwell's companion for nearly twenty years. It started as a case of haunting house with bleeding walls, Caldwell called for Simon, and it ended with quite HOT sex.
As one could read from K.J. Charles's first book, The Magpie Lord, she has a wonderful writing style infused with humor. And I couldn't help chuckling over my favorite line of this book ...

The thunder is rumbling, lightening is striking, the glow from the fire is casting strange shadows around the room and yet there's still a chill in the room. Its midnight and the clock strikes:
One...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight...nine...ten...Eleven...twelve..........THIRTEEN!!!!
Something spooky is afoot methinks.
Oh no dear reader I fear you must enter the realm of K.J Charles alone and tread the creaky boards of the unknown to discover these snippets of eeriness for yourselves so lock all the doors, close all the curtains, pull your chair close to the fire and settle in whilst you read this short but spooky little gem of a tale of terror!
Be prepared for blood dripping down walls, blood curdling screams, a Ghost Hunter like you've never encountered before and spectral moans ... but not the type you might be thinking off ! * Taps side of nose and coughs! *
Enjoy....but whatever transpires, if you hear something scratching at the door....DO NOT LET IT IN!

I said I wanted more of Robert and Simon and as I've just discovered there's a FREE follow up, in retrospect, my reason for dropping the rating because I wanted more has been filled. Therefore I'm upping this rating to its full five stars... It really does deserve it.

My only complaint about this story is that it was too short. I would have liked Feximal to have to investigate more to discover the source of the haunting, and also for he and Robert to have more time together (literal and page).
Although now that I write this (I only know what I think once I've written it, as some smarter person wrote before me) it occurs to me that it was a good move on Charles' part to make Simon not so great at investigating, in order to keep the duo from becoming too Holmes-and-Watson. There are similarities, but Feximal is not a genius and he doesn't deduce well. Caldwell ends up becoming a much more active contributor to the mystery-solving than Watson was.
Although now that I write this (I only know what I think once I've written it, as some smarter person wrote before me) it occurs to me that it was a good move on Charles' part to make Simon not so great at investigating, in order to keep the duo from becoming too Holmes-and-Watson. The Caldwell Ghost managed to deliver a whole lot of awesome for a mere 17 page read.
This is a brief (but oh-so-satisfying) peek into the initial coming together - boy-howdy, did they ever "come together" - of Robert Caldwell and ghost-hunter Simon Feximal, when the two meet in order to dispel an ancestry ghost from Robert's newly inherited home.
It was short, but compelling... and hot as hell, if that wasn't already clear.
The way in which this ghost is "exorcised" makes me think I should consider going into the ghost-hunting business, because, DAMN!
In all seriousness though, the fact that KJ could pack such a punch with such a teeny-tiny historical short just goes to show how impressive her writing skills are.

It was good, but it really was way too short. I would have preferred a little more satisfaction when it comes to the resultion of the ghost story. It felt more like an afterthought rather than the main focus of the story. The sex was hot, but I wanted more of the ghost story.

Robert Caldwell inherits a haunted house and a frustrated ghost, and hires a ghost-hunter to deal with it. There are sinister forces at work, the ghost-hunter has secrets of his own, and I don't think it's a spoiler to disclose that the ghost gets well and truly laid.

From bleeding, bubbling walls of blood to spook’ilicious sex! This quick blast of chills made me so happy.
The Caldwell Ghost introduces us to Robert Caldwell and Simon Feximal. Simon is a ghost hunter brought in to investigate Robert’s ancestral haunted home. A house with spider webs, creaks, and shadows in every corner. So let the ghosting, grinning, and moaning begin…I mean come on! A sexy ghost-hunter and his hilarious, horny side kick! What’s not to smile about here?
But as much as I adore Robert and Simon’s tone and chemistry, it was Ms. Charles that ruled these haunted halls for me. I loved the language. Words and phrases you just don’t bump into in life or on the page every day. Words like chap, sickle, dagger, and candelabra. Small, simple words that create such strong images in my imagination. I love to let them linger and roll around in my head. My favorite line was this little cutie though…”I felt the slightest bat-squeak of awareness”. :) Haha…Bat squeak!
This was the perfect Halloween treat! Thanks to the GR Gang for pointing it out. It floated around my feed all day yesterday. There was no way to resist!
I’m off to scoop up anything and everything Ms. Charles put out here. The Magpie Lord just hit the top of my must read next pile.

It's rare I give such a short story 5 stars, and some people will say this is really only one scene, but the writing in this story is so good, I can't give it any less. Horror, humor, hotness, the new 3 H's? I love how we learn so much about about the MCs through their actions, such beautiful job of showing, not telling. Now, I'm off to the next one, because I can't get enough of Robert and Simon.

Well this is the first exorcism by sex that I’ve read!
It’s a clever set up… a journal entry that illustrates the beginning of a personal and professional relationship. We find out bits and pieces about a new team of paranormal investigators, Robert Caldwell and Simon Feximal from first meeting on.
In the capable hands of KJ Charles you know it will be well done and salty. In this starter, Caldwell’s ancestral home is haunted by a randy ghost. He and ghostbuster, Simon Feximal, don’t waste any time getting down to it with a little help from ‘spirited’ hands.
I enjoyed this very much… am especially intrigued by the brusque, aloof, Feximal and his hidden depths. My rating only reflects the brevity of the piece, more needs to come. Speaking of which, the story’s end solution is a nice surprise… quick, hot and dirty, a piquant appetizer.

Impressive little short, as it never felt underdeveloped, giving a nice paranormal, plausible reason for Robert and Simon to get down and dirty.
Definitely an interesting way to start a series, this was fully evolved and cleverly leaving me wanting more.

There's nothing quite like a haunted house, unless it's a haunted stately home with a 200 year-old ghost, the dark of night and candlelight. Add a Victorian setting to the ghostly haunting and, best of all, a sexy ghost hunter and a well-born gentleman. Can life get any better? Yes! It can get better, with a little horror and the dedicated ghost hunter and the unfulfilled ghost both bending to the job of exorcising the restless spirit.
I gave this 4 stars for being a ghost story, a Victorian ghost story, a stately home setting and, of course, the writing. Did I think a bit of Lucien and Stephen? I believe I did. The fourth star is for the story that I continued in my own thoughts.

K.J. Charles’ “The Magpie Lord” is the absolute best book I have read all year. Not many authors can creep the hell out of you, while making you laugh and then leave you fanning yourself and re-reading repeatedly her more sensual scenes. So of course I went all fangirl twirley when I saw that she was releasing The Caldwell Ghost, the first book in her new series The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal. I am a voracious reader but usually I don’t like to read short stories. Just when you get into the rhythm of the tale you blink and it’s over…if the story is bad it is wasted seconds of your life and if it is any good it is like that Brazilian summer exchange student that left you in a fetal position crying for more. When I saw it was $1.99 for only 17 freakin’ pages , well yeah NOOO came to mind. The buzz around the tale though just kept building and many of my friends were all in a tizzy about how much they really liked the story, and not one of them complained about the price. Then Charles released Butterflies the second book in the series (which is a little longer and free) amping up the cacophony urging me to read the books. Boy, did I have major crow to eat (crow –magpies hee -snort) because man can Charles write... she crams more story into those few pages than most authors do in full length novels.
If you look at this story as an introduction to the tales, it is the perfect prologue to set the mood. The stories are Robert Caldwell’s unedited versions of previously written censored tales of famous Ghost Hunter Simon Feximal. The set up in the first story is the meeting between Robert Caldwell and Feximal. Simon is described as looking like an archaic priest with steely gray hair… ummm wait what really? He has a young face though, and then you realize this man has seen and done some things that have ravaged him throughout the years, but once the story gets going sexy doesn’t begin to describe the way you see Simon. Charles has a way of vividly drawing images in your mind much in the same way the tattoos crawl across her characters' bodies...and I mean literally crawl.
Great googly moogly K.J. Charles can scare the crap out of her readers. She has you turning on all the lights and getting under the covers, jumping at every noise. But like that idiot that goes into the other room because they heard something, I can not stop reading! Then, just as quickly, she can fog up the room in a whole different way... leaving you restless and moaning, and moaning ... whew......
ok we go on....
The series is supposed to chronicle 20 years of adventures between Ghost hunter extraordinaire Simon and his companion Caldwell. It is no stretch to compare their relationship to Holmes and Watson, Arthur and Merlin, Bert and Ern.... well ok you get the point.. These two men belong together. I don't want to go into more details because you need to enjoy the whole experience.
I had a major epiphany when reading a specific quote
I know about stories. They must have endings. A story without an ending is an unbearable itch to the reader.
Sound the hallelujah choir, this is why I hate cliffhangers!! It is like that itch in the middle of your back you can't reach.
Well I did not feel cheated after reading The Caldwell Ghost and yet I want to read more about them. Thank goodness I was able to go right to the next story.

Very hot, quite smoldering in fact, and introduces us to an intriguing Victorian paranormal setting, and two sexy protagonists. However, this is simply way too short to do the job properly; everything, the ghost plot, the narrator, relationship, sex, all felt shortchanged. The second story in the series does better and has the added plus of being free.
Big HOWEVER: I employed the word "smoldering." There are definitely bits I will be rereading. With enthusiasm.

The Caldwell Ghost is a spooky, short story about the first meeting of journalist Robert Caldwell and ghost-hunter Simon Feximal. It has been said that Caldwell Place has been haunted for some 200 years. After inheriting the house, Robert moves in with all intents of selling the property; of course the ghost stories can’t be true! At first, Robert starts hearing the sounds of passion night after night, but when the walls begin to bleed, he finally decides to call in some help. In walks Simon Feximal and their eerie night begins.
Its sometimes difficult for me to review short stories, factors have to be viewed with different considerations compared to longer books. But for a story that reads under 5,000 words, The Caldwell Ghost packs one hell of a hell of a punch. It’s mysterious and creepy…and even a little bit kinky. I love the author’s creativity here! I won’t go into any more specifics of the story, but I know this is only the first of many adventures for Robert and Simon. I’m totally excited to see what they get up to next.

Its sometimes difficult for me to review short stories, factors have to be viewed with different considerations compared to longer books. But for a story that reads under 5,000 words, The Caldwell Ghost packs one hell of a hell of a punch. It’s mysterious and creepy…and even a little bit kinky. I love the author’s creativity here! I won’t go into any more specifics of the story, but I know this is only the first of many adventures for Robert and Simon. I’m totally excited to see what they get up to next.

Well that was a long time coming (pun absolutely intended). 200 years is a bloody long time.
I loved the characters and the story, but most of all I loved the idea. Fun and novel, done in Ms Charles' usual witty, flowing style.

Yeah, so it's obvious why and how Simon and Robert are going to first meet and then git it awn. But who cares when it involves fun supernatural ingredients like this?
I liked the dialogue and, in a short few pages, we are given enough character traits and personality insights to at least make us care some about these two.
With most short stories, I don't usually feel more could have been added to improve the experience by way of the characters spending a bit more time together if it feels like a completed event. However, in this case, I think the story and Simon and Robert would have benefited. We are given a decent amount of detail without it feeling like toomuchatoncebecausetherearesofewpages in which to make us care, but if there had been more about their predicament, the impact would have increased proportionally. In other words, all bennies, no losers.
And that git it awn part? Yeah, it's hot and frantic and specific to these two men. That's difficult to do no matter the story length.
I enjoy this author's style, and way of mixing historical and supernatural worlds, and that now includes this story.

4.5 stars - This was a great spooky short story - I just wish there had been more! It's effectively just one scene and it's a very quick read, but I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more by this author. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, especially in M/M. I guess that's a bit weird cos I'm a history graduate. I like to learn about it, but when it comes to my M/M fiction I definitely prefer a contemporary setting. Having said that, I'm totally going to make an exception for KJ Charles :)

A delicious albeit too short for my tastes trip back in time where a young journalist meets a sexy ghost hunter and a horny ghost.
I *love* KJ Charles' writing. I find it funny, imaginative, sexy, and thrilling, and she does a great job painting the scene with period details while keeping the pacing tight and the dialogue sharp.
It's a very fun, sexy read, but at 4,500 words, it's also a very quick read, which makes that $2 price point a little hard to take. Thankfully, I already read the excellent, longer, and free sequel story Butterflies so already knew I liked the characters and their steamy chemistry, so took the plunge into this first story about how they met.
Now I'm looking even more forward to checking out their new free crossover story Remnant.
Even if I'm grouchy about the price point, Simon and Robert are super fun characters and I love-love-love how Charles has developed them over their first two stories. I very much hope she returns to them. (With a novel. Pretty pretty please?) :D

I’m just going to say this right out loud ::clears pipes:: — There are some authors who shouldn’t be allowed to write short stories. There. Said. Now, let me explain why I feel this way. There are some writers whose prose is so magnetic, whose stories are so engrossing, whose characters are so intriguing that they should be given many, many words and paragraphs and pages within which the reader can become so lost that s/he forgets about the outside world for more than the space of a brief interlude with imagination.
KJ Charles has officially been put on notice.
