Lane barely survived her first journey to the Feral Zone. The forbidden, overgrown landscape east of the Mississippi River was abandoned years ago when a virus spread through the population, bringing civilization to its knees.
But Lane has crossed the quarantine line, and she knows the truth. There are survivors on the other side of the wall - people who were not killed by the virus, but changed by it, their bodies warped to display a variety of animal traits. In the most severe cases, their minds are warped as well, leaving them barely human.
Lane volunteers to return to the Zone as part of a humanitarian aid mission. But she has a darker, secret purpose. Someone she loves has been infected, and she once made him a promise: If he ever goes feral, Lane will be the one to put him down. Now, Lane fears that the time has come.
Kat Falls lives in Evanston, IL with her husband, theater director Robert Falls, their three children, and a whole slew of pets. She grew up in Silver Spring, MD, attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an undergrad, and went on to receive an MFA from Northwestern University, where she now teaches.
Kat is the author of the middle-grade science fiction novels, Dark Life and Rip Tide, which she describes as “underwater westerns.”
She came up with the idea for Dark Life (Scholastic, 2010) during a writing exercise. Knowing that her 11-year-old son loved reading about the ocean, Wild West pioneers, and the X-Men, she combined his interests and created a story premise that kept her up nights plotting and world-building. Since then, Dark Life has been nominated for children’s book awards in ten states and translated into 17 languages around the world. Kat appeared on the Today Show when Dark Life was featured on Al Roker's Book Club. Currently, Dark Life is in development for film at Disney with The Gotham Group producing.
When the sequel, Rip Tide (Scholastic, 2011) came out, Publishers Weekly wrote, “As with its predecessor, there’s no shortage of action, intrigue, or daring exploits in this aquatic thriller. Atmospheric and tense, built around an expertly used post apocalyptic–meets–Wild West setting, this story’s a whole lot of fun.”
Kat’s YA novel, Inhuman (Scholastic, 2013), is the first book of a science fiction trilogy set in the near future after a plague has turned millions of people into feral beast-men.
Inhuman received glowing reviews from Publishers Weekly, SLJ, VOYA, and a starred review from Kirkus. Inhuman is also a nominee on the 2014-2015 Tome Society It List for “clean” teen reads.
IT HAS LITERALLY BEEN YEARS AND THE SEQUEL WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OUT IN 2016.
Ughhhhh. If I have to transfer this book to my 2019 releases shelf....... I may actually lose my mind, because I've been transferring it to every "yearly" shelf since 2014.
It's been five long years since I was first pulled into Lane, Everson, and Rafe's adventures in the Feral zone in Inhuman. What started out as a fairly average book ended with quite the bang. The characters were enjoyable, the action compelling, and the book left me with a host of moral issues to think about. An extra bonus? There was little to no bad language. Plus, it's not often that I find myself almost equally happy with both sides of a love triangle. I loved both Rafe and Everson - although for vastly different reasons.
Given how long I waited for this book, it's not a surprise that I gobbled it up in the space of a day. I was desperate to know how my beloved characters' stories ended, and for the most part, I wasn't disappointed.
A short list of cons: I don't think the plot in this installment was quite as strong as the first - but then again, it's hard to match the pulse-pounding intensity of a deranged tiger-man who rips people's hearts out and eats them (just saying) - although it got the job done. I, personally, would have also enjoyed a bit more action on the romantic side of things , but that wasn't a deal-breaker either.
The pros: Ms. Falls does a great job of exploring the moral dilemmas inherent in Lane's world. Where is the line between human and inhuman, and does society have a right to strip someone's rights just because they don't meet the legal definition of human? Is it ever okay to test something on someone against their will, even if it might cure them or help the greater good?
As in the first book, Undaunted is chock full of creatively imagined manimals and other animal hybrids. And the snark. Oh, the wonderful, ball-busting, glorious strong-woman snark. The lionesses - who we saw briefly in the first book - came back with a vengeance and they were amazing from start to finish. And the twist with . Yes, yes, 100 times YES. I was totally in for those fireworks.
And we met so many more loveable characters. The orphans. The manimals at Camp Echo. Douchebag Rafe even made a reappearance (and he was as fun as always), although I was happy to see Lane knew enough this time around to call him on his crap.
Bottom line: I'm happy my babies got their happily ever after. If you haven't read this little gem of a series, give it a try. It's not perfect, but there's so much here to love.
I thought Inhuman promised the next book would be out fall 2014... It's fall; still not out. It doesn't even have a release date yet. Or a cover! *Sign* I don't know how much longer I can wait for this book.
Edit 4/26/2016 Seriously, what is going on? When is this book going to come out! Kat Falls if you're reading this can you please (with a cherry on top) explain what's going on with Undaunted?
I have to say, it was worth the wait!! I was anxious to read this after waiting so long! I understand when authors have a block, so I have no resentment for Kat Falls. She did an amazing job with this sequel! I love how much is brought up about the first book, making it feel like there are no gaps even when the readers had to wait a while. I was scared to read this book, worried it wouldn't turn out how I wanted it to, but I worried for nothing. :) I truly love the characters and the setting, this was just a genius book idea. I truly recommend this book! The Fetch series is my all time favorite series.
this was the perfectly thrilling sequel to the perfectly gripping first novel! i enjoyed every second of it, ate up every ounce of rafe-lane content. well done, kay falls! well done.
cws: light language i think, violence, a reference to something but i can’t remember 😭
OH. MY. GOSH! I'm sooooo happy it's finally out! I love this series and this book! I loved the ending. I also loove the couples. Like seriously, Rafe and Lane, power couple, am I right? After the first book I was totally rooting for Everson, but I was reading this one and changed my mind. I love how Everson ended up with Mahari. Speaking of lionesses, I really thought Lane would become one. There were a couple parts that I actually thought were foreshadowing on that, and I got too excited for that, that when it didn't happen, I got super disappointed. I thought it would happen because it would "improve" Lane and she could take the cure too, so she wouldn't go feral. Then we could have Wraith and Silky! *fangirling* That would be the only part I would change in this book. I enjoyed the orphans and Aaron. Another thing I loved was the place full of manimals. It just made me really happy for some reason. Also, some parts were kind of predictable. I knew Lane would end up with Rafe. I also guessed Mahari and Everson's relationship after Everson got told to kiss Mahari. Oh yeah, is anyone else sad about Charmaine? It makes me really sad that she went feral, but I guess it was ought to happen. This book is definitely one of my favorites. I feel complete now. Lane didn't have to keep her promise. If she did, Kat Falls would have to sleep with one eye open...for no particular reason..... Yeah it's good Rafe is alive.

It was so beautiful! The characters were breathtakingly wonderful, I am amazed that they felt like exactly who they were in the first back even after all these years (except for Everson)! I did have some problems though...I thought Kat Falls made Lane's choice too easy! Everson's personality and character didn't feel true to himself from the last book, he acted in ways that I didn't expect, and that made Lane go from feeling butterflies when she saw him to almost instantly ruling him out as a choice, and that didn't seem right to me. And my other problem was that the ending wrapped up too quickly, we go from having no hope of how things would be solved by the end of the book, to things being made right in a matter of like two seconds. But that was it, I loved everything else about the book, and that Lane ended up with Rafe! I was so happy! I knew he couldn't have gone feral! They were made to be together and that kiss....ooohhh it was fabulous! and that last line! Kat Falls, you genius! I am so sad that it is over, I want more after waiting all these years. I'm just said that people don't really know about this series, so there isn't any cool merch or anything, so sad. Well, thank you Kat Falls for writing one of my very favorite book series!

I have been waiting for this book for about 6 years. And If the reason it took so long to be published is because she wanted to write the best sequel she could, then she accomplished exactly that! I was so excited and a little scared to read this book. If you have read the first book, then you know what I'm talking about.
I'm a little a lot sad that I have now finished the duology, I will miss these beloved characters and even the Feral Zone, but now I can be at . . . peace, so to speak. The book has been written, there is finally conclusion to this fantastic story. (Not that I would EVER want it to end. If Kat Falls decides to right more in this world, or even side stories, or novellas, I will be first in line.)
This book has exceeded my expectations, the ones I have been developing for 6 odd years, and it took my breath away. You get to see more of the zone, and learn more about the world and its inhabitants. It gives you more insights on the characters from the first book, and the answers to foreshadows you never even saw coming! I am absolutely in love with the characters, and the books. Undaunted and its predecessor Inhuman, will be in my top 10 favorite books/series category for a long time, and trust me, Its high up on the list!
I just finished this book that I’ve been patiently waiting for for over a year! It did not disappoint. Kat Falls any chance we may get a 3rd about fetching family members?? I highly suggest this read. #TeamRafe&Lane
I loved the first Book it was quite different from a lot of other books I have read thus far, that's for sure! I am looking very forward to this upcoming book!
I am really excited for the second book to come out. I loved Inhuman and it was different than majority of the books I read! I cannot wait until it comes out.
Probably could've enjoyed this more, but I was just eye-rolling too much.
Wording - there were some quotes that I believe were for poetic effect, Instead it made me go like "what?" - "Every warm drop of blood drained from my body" - "She blinked and then gave me a smile that was one part surfer girl and two parts shark" - I stared at him, taken so far aback, I could've been swimming in the Mississippi." See what I mean?
- Rafe was supposed to be snarky, bright(ish) guy, but now he was nice, but stoic guy. Wasn't that Everson's job. HMMMMM
- Is Spurling good or bad? IDK
- Lane never did anything heroic (to me at least). She ran around and waited for Rafe/Everson/anyone basically to save her. "Oh yeah I'm suuuuuuuuuuper badass"
- What was the point of the orphanage thing? To make her seem nice?
This is really just my list of complaints. Ehhh, 3.3/5 I guess
This is a sequel to a book I read and found interesting in sixth grade. It is dystopian, which is a genre I really like. Reviews of this book says .....
I was really anticipating this book and have waited years for it to come out! It did not disappoint. The story was developed and the characters became deeper than in the first book. I can't review this book without mentioning the love triangle. All throughout Inhuman I was rooting for Everson, but before I even started Undaunted I was kind of unsure who I liked better. Right at the start of Undaunted I started to dislike Everson, just as a character. Then when Rafe came back in he was so much more developed than before. I am really happy with the ending and how everything worked out.

After years of waiting, we finally got it. I hope that most people hadn’t given up on waiting for, or forgotten, about Undaunted. I just finished reading it and I thought Undaunted was a good way to end this story.
Undaunted (Inhuman #2) by Kat Falls, 372 pages. Scholastic, 2019. $17. Language: G; Mature
Content: PG; Violence: PG-13.
BUYING ADVISORY: MS, HS – ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
The United States is divided in half by a quarantine wall along the Mississippi River. In the west, society is normal. In the east, chaos reigns. A man-made virus which transfers DNA between species has turned humans into manimals. In the advanced stages of the disease, manimals go feral and lose any remnants of their humanity. Now Lane is returning to the zone to help administer an inhibitor drug and collect blood samples for a potential vaccine. Her priority is finding Rafe. Infected with tiger DNA, he will go feral unless she reaches him in time. Readers who like books and movies about viruses getting out of control will enjoy this one.
There’s high action as the three main characters set off into the forest, knowing they are in a danger zone. Typical of YA books, there’s a love triangle, setting up additional conflict. The protagonist is likeable for standing up against a powerful corporation to defeat moral corruption. Bottom line: If you love dystopian themes, you will love this book. If you don’t, look elsewhere.
Not worth the wait for me. I think you can definitely tell she was struggling to write it. To me it reads almost like B rated fanfiction by someone who really liked the world/characters. But doesn't actually have a story to tell. So, they're more just exploring the world and giving the characters the happy endings or just desserts they want them to have with minimal effort to make those endings match the tone and set up of the first novel.
The plot was more of just a bunch of minor problems, that appear and are resolved in a couple chapters. There really wasn't a build up, climax and resolution of a main issue. Everything was fixed too easily and with little to no loss unlike the first novel.
I think Kat Falls does have talent. she created an interest world and character and that was enough to pull it up from a one star. She just really missed the mark on this one. I would only recommend this book if you absolutely loved the first.
