1st place Science Fiction, Royal Palm Literary Award, 2013.
You can defeat your enemies, but can you defeat your friends?
Danyael Sabre, an object of desire, would much rather not be. An alpha empath by birth, a doctor by training, and an empathic healer by calling, he is stalked by the military that covets his ability to kill, not heal. Bereft of two days of memories, he goes on the run under the protection of an assassin, Zara Itani.
The more he uncovers of his lost hours, the more he doubts everything that once anchored him. He knows only that he endangers those around him and that he is falling in love with Zara, who hates him for reasons he no longer remembers.
As forces—both powerful and ruthless—threaten those he cares for, Danyael has only two options. He can betray his values and abandon the path of the healer, or he can wait to be betrayed, not by enemies, but by his friends.
PERFECT BETRAYAL is the second novel in the award-winning Double Helix series.
Jade Kerrion, an award-winning author, got her start in fan fiction. She developed a loyal reader base with her fan fiction series based on the MMORPG Guild Wars. She was accused of keeping her readers up at night, distracting them from work, housework, homework, and (far worse), from actually playing Guild Wars.
And then she wondered why just screw up the time management skills of gamers? Why not aspire to screw everyone else up too? So here she is, writing books that aspire to keep you from doing anything else useful with your time.
She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her wonderfully supportive husband and her two young sons, Saint and Angel, (no, those aren't their real names, but they are like saints and angels, except when they're not.)
This is the sequel to the award-winning Perfection Unleashed. It starts where the original left off. Danyael Sabre, the world's most powerful empath arrives home with no memory of the last two days. At his apartment he finds a beautiful and dangerous mercenary waiting for him, Zara Itani. She knows him but he has no memory of her. Immediately, he finds himself attracted to her, even though he can feel the hate for him rolling off from her. Mentally and spiritually exhausted from emotions that he has recently absorbed and physically broken by having been shot recently and having walked home from the airport, the last thing he needs is Zara's aggressive feelings battering his empathic shields, but he's stuck with her because she has promised the only person that Danyael counts as a friend, Lucien Winter, that she will keep him safe. Its a good thing too, because within 24 hours, Danyael is going to become the target of every human and mutant law and enforcement agency in the US. The Double Helix trilogy sets it's stall in the mutant/superhero genre and the powers and world-building will be familiar to anyone who has read the X-men or Watchmen comics or even seen the films. What Kerrion has done is that she has added to the tropes of the sub-genre by adding in human derivatives, such as Xin, cloned using the genes of a Chinese Empress and military strategist, and Galahad, the genetically perfect human being that shares the face of Danyael Sabre. The grand conflict in this world is a triangle with the pro-human lobby, the Mutant Affairs Council and the Mutant Assault Group, with the US government in the middle. Perfect Betrayal lacks the focus of the first book in the trilogy, brought by the central thread of Galahad and the abominations. In the original, a collision between the two was inevitable and created a central axis for the rest of the plot. In Perfect Betrayal this isn't immediately evident, even though you have the delicious duel of personalities between Danyael and Zara, the perfect love-hate relationship that is the subject of many rom-coms. There is a central story thread here too, but Kerrion takes a while getting it to, though the interim is made quite enjoyable by the latter relationship. The pacing is also quite different from the original, as the plot reaches a climatic set-piece in the middle of the novel, with the second-half of the book revealing the main plot. A second major set piece arrives at the end of the novel, but fizzles instead of sizzles with a missed opportunity for a grand battle between the two mutant factions. This is still a very enjoyable piece of writing, with compelling characters, interesting pacing and interesting concepts. Its actually a very good read compared to much of the rubbish out there at the moment. In some ways this book is better than the original and in other places there are some missed opportunities. This is a good solid read and I look forward to the third volume in the trilogy.
Although I hated the way Perfection Unleashed ended (because it was so damn good but so cruel) and wanted to shake some sense into both Danyael and Zara, Perfect Betrayal made me feel even more for these characters. Zara is still a bitch who I'm slowly coming to love, while Danyael continues to be the perfect martyr hero (once in while, I wish he'd snapped and rain holy terror on the deserving assholes around him). The way Zara uses Danyael in this book is the definition of betrayal, as well as the way his so called friends decide that he must suffer even more for his own and the greater good. I have to admit I cried buckets during this book.
If you want a thrilling scifi ride with buckets of action and characters that will make you ache and think about them for days after, read this book!
After the events in the previous book, Galahad the perfect clone is on the run and Danyael now has a gaping hole in his brain as his memories were ripped away from him. Danyael’s best friend Lucian sends assassin Zara to watch over Danyael. But rather than stay put and merely make certain Danyael is coping properly, she decides to take him on the road and use him as a decoy for Galahad (since they look exactly the same). Zara finds she has growing feelings for Danyael and denies them at every turn since she is supposed to be in love with the perfect being Galahad rather than flawed, overly emotional basket case Danyael who would rather heal and save people even above his own life. Though while they’re on the run, ducking various enforcement groups, Lucian turns up missing and the plot turns into a rescue mission as they head to the Bahamas to extricate Lucian from a tropical island stronghold.
I adore this series! If I were to pin-point what I love the most about it, it would be Danyael. I love how complicated of a character he is. And his struggle to survive is what really burns bright in this book. With all the pain he’s gone through, all of the self-sacrifice he does, and all of the love he has for anyone remotely near him, I can’t help but want to hug him and hope he has a good future to come. Which is probably why I’m so frustrated with Zara. I noted in the previous book that the weakest character is definitely Zara. She’s the typical clichéd black leather-clad, gun-toting tough chick and they’re really a dime a dozen in indie books nowadays. She flip-flops and uses and manipulates Danyael and still argues that she has the high-ground (not even remotely, lady), and yet we’re still expected to accept her as romantic interest for Danyael (ugh! She may be beautiful, but that’s all she really has going for her. He can really do better). And Galahad’s a major jerk too, and it amazes me how Zara considers herself smart, yet she’s anything but when it comes to seeing Danyael and Galahad for what they are or even knowing the right choices to make in a situation. She always turns to fighting and killing rather than using her head to get out of situation. Honestly, I wouldn’t liken this to X-Men. (The Gifted, maybe, but not X-Men). If I were to liken this particular book to anything, it would be James Bond. It had the luxury yacht complete with butlers, cooks, and maids, and the typical tropical island stronghold that they had to infiltrate and there was the usual shoot-out and action extravaganza as the heroes fought their way through nameless goon after nameless goon. Still, I am continuing on to book 3 since I’m still in love with Danyael and direly need to see what happens next for him. And it does stand as testament to the author that she can make me feel so strongly about her characters, whether it’s favorable or negative.
Perfect Betrayal is the sad continuation in the series written by Jade Kerrion. Don’t take me wrong, this book is just as amazing, but as the title says, the betrayal part is just sad since you can guess who will be betrayed. You slowly learn that they author has a greater picture in mind, but she only lets you see little pieces of it, as it fits the story. She is an expert in weaving a web so tight that you feel you will never get out of it, and then loosens it just a little that keeps you hanging on. This book, and this series, is impossible to put down! The pace as usual is just perfect, never does it feel like it drags out nor ever does it feel like the author rush you through the story. There is however always something happening so you feel like the story is flying by in no time at all.
The author manages to do quite a bit of character development and although she spends a lot of time on Danyael, you see how slowly but surely Zara is starting to use her brain. It is interesting to see how it seems she is finally “seeing” what is right in front of her eyes.
It is kind of funny, I bought the entire collection and every time I finish one I am sad, yet happy because I know I can continue right onto the next one. Trust me you won’t regret starting this series, except when you read them all and will have to wait for the author to write more.
When I first saw the synopsis for Sicarius Soul. I was surprised. Here was a whole series I didn't know about and it sounded great. Amazon said I already owned several and a quick look into my reading queue and I found the earlier books. I immediately moved them to the head of the list and I was not wrong to do so. I quickly read - Miriya, then Perfection Unleashed (Double Helix #1), Perfect Betrayal (Double Helix #2), Perfect Weapon (Double Helix #3), Perfection Challenged (Double Helix #4) and then Sicarius Soul.
An incredible world Jade built with diverse interesting characters, all with a different challenge, and yet all intertwined. I definitely read way into the night on every one of these stories. The great news is that there are several more stories in this world for me to read.
It still has all the things I didn't like, first and foremost Danyael being the victim, TGTBT, being manipulated etc.
I really dislike Zara, I don't see how anyone would like her, and this whole "to Danyael's empathic eyes, she is a gliterring jewel" - she is a selfish, mean and cold person, distrustful and without any sense of humor. WHY??? Why would her soul be glittering?????
Anyway.
There are many many plotholes, especially around this whole empath-topic but also Galahad as a plot device instead of a person, and the world-building is bent to serve the story line a lot, but it somehow still is a good read.
I do not know how the author could have stood to write this book. I understand it is on the road to some ending but to collapse so much heart-rending pain into one story leave the reader in almost as much agony as the MC. I suppose that was her purpose and she was very successful. The story probably deserves a 4 or 5, but I am left with such depression I am not willing to rate it higher.
This book is the second one in the series, it grabs you and takes you on a wild ride with awesome characters. There are twists and turns along the way. The characters make you love them and angry at the same time. Bad decisions, character flaws, etc make them very realistic. I recommend this book, but definitely read the first book then this one.
I read the first in the series and this one is just as good. Some of the characters remain as infuriating as in the first book, others even more so and yet others get their just reward and get eliminated. Still gripping and looking forward to the build up that's in the next book
This series is off to an amazing quest to save Danyael Sabre, an empathic healer. All he wants to do is heal people, but he keeps getting into trouble with skeptics.
Applause to the author Jade Kerrion for the Science Fiction Series, Double Helix. Perfect Betrayal continued where Perfection Unleashed end. Her knowledge and thorough research giving us another excellent read. Intense is maybe the best word to describe the second book. The scientific intensity of DNA manipulation and the effects on people and the environment skillfully penned down in this highly entertaining book that force you to keep pace in the meticulous build up of the well executed plot. Mixed in all the intrigues of human emotions, the ebbs and flows of growing relationships mixed with the Alpha Empath's gift you get a very interesting story that draws you in and captures the imagination. Making you part of the characters as realistic beings. Again we are introduced to the same group in Perfection Unleashed. But this time we get a clear image of Danyael Sabre. The spotlight more on him as a person and not only as a template for the in-human Galahad. My heart went out for this young doctor struggling to do the right thing but every time thwarted and his plans taking twists and turns that lead up to his capture and ultimate betrayal of friends and the council members he thought would protect him. Walking with unbearable pain as he tried to outrun the schemers who only wants his gifts as exploits to their own power surge and greed. We also learn more about Zara and her conflicting emotions. Falling in love with the empath but not willing too submit too the feelings and emotions it caused in her life. Leaving her with regrets and a sour taste for perfection at the end. Lucien who turned on his best friend, the Northern Star in Danyael's life. Of course not by his own will but manipulated by the Mutant Assault Group. Causing havoc in Danyael's life leaving him bereft and alone. Galahad the in-human who turns on Danyael in his own attempts to gain recognition as a human from the Government. The Psychic ghosts were brought in but at the end Danyael chose his path above the freedom they offered. The only good thing that came out of that meeting was the introduction to Jacob Johnson. There is just too much to say about this book in a review. It is best to get the Series and read it for yourself. Starting with the first book to get a understanding of the story. Discovering a unique world off DNA manipulation, cloning and the effects it can have on us. Relationships is tested and questions asked with no real answers since human emotions plays such a huge roll in the decisions we make. At the end we live by the choices we make and not what others make for us. That sets our future in motion and is beautifully illustrated in this book. A book I can highly recommend to every Sci-Fi reader. Suspense filled to the very end. Well done Jade Kerrion.
Perfect Betrayal picks up right where Perfection Unleashed ends. It’s almost as if the story was one long, continuous tale and Jade just split the story into three nice parts where they have these nice little separations. And let me say that the title speaks for itself. There is plenty of betrayal, almost too many, and at times it was a little difficult to remember who was on whose team and why.
Given that it’s been September since I read the first book, I must applaud Jade for writing such memorable characters. There was little backpedaling added, so if you have a short memory, it’s best to read this book as soon as possible after reading the first book. However, the important details are brought up here and there throughout the book for Danyael’s sake since he lost two days worth of memories.
Every character is fleshed out in great detail and they each have their own reasons to be on Team Danyael or Team Galahad or even to work for their own unique “team.” Because it’s so easy to feel sympathetic toward Danyael and because he is the main character, I can’t help but root for Team Danyael. The guy deserves some sort of happiness and thankfully he finds a little bit (more like a smidgeon) before it gets taken away. With so many people out looking for Danyael and Galahad, there’s little time to breathe between all the action. There were a couple of times where I felt like there was almost too much, too fast, and one instance where I questioned a character’s loyalty. Though I’m not head-over-heels in love with the book as I was with Perfection Unleashed, I still love Perfect Betrayal. It felt like a “bridge” connecting Book One to Book Three and I’m interested to see where it leads.
The ending leaves the reader wondering: What’s going to happen next? With cryptic words left by a pre-cog at the end of the book, I can’t help but wonder how everything will play out the end. But I do hope that it at least ends in a happy ending for Danyael.
Perfect betrayal picks up where perfection unleashed left off, Danyael is minus two days of his memoires thanks to a memory wipe, Galahad is fleeing the country with Miriya, Lucien as been convinced that Danyael is better off without the two day memories and Zara is protecting Danyael.
Zara hates Danyael but unfortunately he cant remember why. Lucien as asked her to protect Danyael and she as agreed but she as her own reasons for helping him.
As in perfection unleashed Zara was a character I loved to hate and I yoyo'd between both emotions with her, many times I thought she would redeem herself and her actions but many times she disappointed me. because of this she was one of my favourite characters, even if I wanted to slap her. Lol
Danyael again was the hero in my eyes, he is pushed to his limit so many times, physically and emotionally he risked himself over and over again for the people he cared for but all he got in return was betrayed.
the title of the book is spot on, it was the perfect betrayal and one Danyael never saw coming, after all he had been through already I was sure this would break him.
This book raised the question, who can you ever really trust and is one man's life ever more important than another man's.
there was one character who seriously took a nose dive in my eyes I wont give anything away but I was disappointed with the decisions this character made especially the consequence it had on Danyael who in case you hadn't realised I completely loved.
His feelings for Zara increased the more time he spent with her and I was pleading with her to return his feelings, he so deserves to be happy even if that is with Zara.
By the end of the book I felt like I had been on a roller-coaster and I couldn't wait to pick up the next instalment.
Danyael Sabre is an Alpha Empath combined with his medical training he is one of the best empathic healers in the world. His empathy can not only heal though it can also be used to kill, making Danyael the target of the military that will stop at nothing to extort his power for their own.
Jade Kerrion has certainly come up with a highly unique and fascinating world. Where people are born and even created with amazing powers. The only problem with this novel is that it does drag on in some places, though this does build the suspense in certain areas and makes the action scenes that much more powerful it can become tedious. Other than this the novel has some amazing action scenes and along with a struggle with morality it is certainly an amazing science fiction novel. I did enjoy this book even with some of the slow spots, Jade Kerrion is a fantastic story teller, creating some of the most poignant and amazing scenes. I know from Perfection Unleashed that Jade Kerrion can do so much better so I am looking forward to the next novel and hopefully we will have more of the epic plot twists I enjoyed so much in book one.
This was a fantastic sequel to the first book. The action and danger is escalated, with Danyael even more mentally and physically damaged by the uncontrollable forces that seek to control or use him. His fight for his personal freedom, so hampered by the judgements and motivations of his friends and enemies, fuels the conflict that is thoughtfully juxtaposed against Danyael's physical copy, Galahad's fight for his own freedom. The tension ratchets higher as the odds continue to stack against Danyael, setting up what I hope to be a great ending to the trilogy.
The beginning of the novel drags a little as the author introduces new sides to Danyael and Zara's relationship. Although the twists and turns of their romance is intriguing, the beginning felt a little repetitive in terms of action. But when "someone" is kidnapped, both the plot and the suspense picks up until it is impossible to put the book down. The author continues to create an intelligent and compelling tale, with complex characters and an intricate plot. The character interactions are especially involved and I think it adds so much to the reality of this world. This is another breath-taking installment of the Double Helix series!
I received a copy of this trilogy in exchange for my honest review. This was such a great science fiction series, one that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was almost nonstop action and lots of suspense as they uncover the true reason behind creating “the perfect human”. Jade Kerrion made her characters extremely realistic. So the novels were easy to get involved in and very difficult to put down. I loved the fact that although it was similar X-Men, the “powers” were a realistic possible human development. This is definitely a 4 star series and worthy read.
The series is moving along. Danyael Sabre, perhaps the most powerful Empath in the world is a pawn being manipulated by several groups and is running for his life. Along the way he finds out just how fleeting friendship can be. How will this all work out? Time to start the next book in the series....
With friends like Danyael's who needs enemies. This is not just a story of betrayal but a story of who is going to betray him next. The story is so well written you can't help but feel for him as if his empathy can transcend the written page.
I have never been so sucked in to a story in my years of pleasure reading as I have in this one. The plot is engagingly twisted, uniquely thought out, and masterfully written. The characters are so well developed and yet with free will, that the skills of the author kept me off kilter and completely engrossed with the action. I'm on to #3.
