I felt like an adult came up with the concept and then handed it over to a high schooler to actually write it. Flat characters that do not develop or grow (ex. Abby wakes up on an island with a stranger but he is familiar and she feels like she knows him = instant close friends with no development or growth), awkward sentences, incorrect verb tenses, contrived plot points (is the brain chip thing seriously possible), no sense of time (supposed to be months but feels like days), rushed ending, and probably one of the most awkward sex scenes I've read. But maybe that's just me. It's hard to root for a couple's love when they go from smiling at each other in conversation to "We're in love and would die for each other!" In fact, a lot of the character relationships are like that. 0 to 60 so fast.

Also, I kind of lost sympathy for everyone on the island when

Overall, it was a decent concept but the juvenile writing killed it for me. I think that with a lot of practice, this author has potential. But what I read was not good, and I will not be checking out the rest of the series. I might revisit him in a few years if he is still writing. We'll see.

I nearly stopped reading this book several times. I found the writing style amateurish. But I kept going as I was curious to find out the solution. Got caught up in the mystery and did finish it, although I can't give it more than 3 stars.

Think ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ mixed with ‘The Truman Show’ and crossed with ‘The Hunger Games’ blend them all together with a tweak here and a tuck there and the end product is Escape A New Life!

Abby and Eric both wake up next to each other, neither one knows where they are, how they got there or who the other is. They soon discover they are on an island and they are not alone. It doesn’t take long for them to realise the natives are anything but welcoming turning their lives into a survival exercise with one goal, to escape.

Escape is and unusual story and had me just as confused as the characters about their situation. I learnt alongside them what was going on and how they ended up in this predicament and it was an interesting ride. Watching Abby as she discovered she had skills she wasn’t aware of while she realised how good she was at surviving in the wild, and the interaction between her and Eric as they both get to know these versions of themselves.

This was a great read with bits of everything to keep you turning the pages, I found the ending a little weak, or maybe rushed, I’m not sure what I mean by that but it just felt like it needed more to convince me, to make it believable if you know what I mean.

To his credit, David J. Antocci is not a bad writer and this edition of Escape, A New Life had fewer typographical errors than other Kindle books I've read. His simplistic story was a cross between The Hunger Games and the CBS show Survivor, so no one will ever accuse Mr. Antocci of originality, but if the author was aiming his adventure tale towards an audience of adolescents, I regret to say he's hit his target.

This book is odd. Mysterious and page turning though. The editors have probably never heard of contractions. I keep transposing them in my head because the characters seem very unlikely to speak so formally. It's a strange editing choice, I think.
Book took an odd turn but it still sort of worked. Romance section didn't quite fit well. I saw why it might have been put in, but for an adventure thriller, it's placement was another choice that made the book feel disjointed.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

WOW! This is an exciting roller coaster ride of an adventure! I loved it!

Abby is a fantastic character. She is very bright, very strong and deadly! However, she also cannot remember certain details - like where she is, or how she got there. But she is one heck of a fighter!

Eric is also in the same boat, so to speak. He too cannot remember how he ended up floating in the ocean. I loved his character. He seems to be very cool under pressure.

As I started reading this novel, I thought "Oh, no! Not another Hunger Games wanna be!". However, this book may have some similarities, but the storyline is completely unique! Told from mostly Abby's and Eric's points of view, the story is attention grabbing! But, other characters have their say too, which gives this a movie like feel! This is a mix of "Extreme Survivor", "Big Brother" and a compelling romance! This book is full of action, adventure and danger that had me completely hooked! The characters are extremely lifelike. I didn't like a few of the other characters, because they are extremely "bad" and terrifyingly dangerous - especially Tom and Bryce! They made me shudder with disgust and revulsion! There are some twists in this tale that completely surprised me - Abby's history for one is an unpleasant revelation, but I can understand why she did what she could to escape from it. The romance between Abby and Eric is extremely sweet! The cliffhanger of an ending sent a shudder up my spine, and now I'm looking forward to reading the next book as soon as possible!

David Antocci has written an exciting debut novel. This author is one to watch! His writing style is fast paced and extremely fluid. I think I will have to add him to my favourite authors list!

I highly recommend this book if you love thrillers, suspense and/or dystopian fiction or are fans of The Hunger Games Trilogy. - Lynn Worton

A few other reviewers expressed my thoughts better than I could myself. One said that it was as though an adult came up with the storyline, then handed it over to a high-schooler to write the book. I thought something along those lines throughout my reading, for more than one reason. Another reviewer said it evoked images of Hunger Games... I would add episodes of LOST and Survivor with a hefty dose of The Bachelor for the schlocky love story. For sheer entertainment value, this book delivers suspense, intrigue, adventure, and more twists, turns and bumps than I ever saw coming. I have already bought the 2nd book in the series because I already know not to expect highbrow literature and, I admit it, I’m a sucker for a fun story.

A New Life is Book One in Escape by David J. Antocci. Abby's life changed when she saved a drowning man during a savage storm. Abby woke up in a place she can not remember how she got there. In the same situation, Eric joins forces with Abby to escape. Will Abby and Eric run, or will their past catch up to them? The readers of A New Life will continue to follow Abby and Eric to discover what happens.

I could not engage with this book due to the book's plot. However, I continued to read this book, hoping it would get more interesting. I don't like David J. Antocci's writing style or how he portrayed his characters. I like David J. Antocci's description of the settings of A New Life, which was done well and complemented the book's plot.

I recommend this book.

3 stars. This book had such an interesting concept. Woman wakes up on an deserted island with no memory. I'm pretty sure the blurb also tells of her making one friend on the island but warns of dangerous people also. By the time the story ended, it was nothing like that. Yes, the wordy beginning chapters were exactly that. Then the story morphed into something I didn't really care for
No, I usually don't deduct 2 stars on story alone. Let's discuss the first few chapters. Wordy and boring. There was world dev,but not much character dev outside of the main character. It was like wake up on island and fall in love with the first man you see. No rhyme. No reason. The timeline was off, too. What I thought was days was actually a month. What happened in all the time in between? Also, I found the action scenes to be confusing and choppy. I couldn't always get a clear picture in my head of what was happening. The rest I can't criticize without spoilers. So read past this only if you don't plan to read the book.

To me, this was an interesting plot at the beginning. As we learn more details and get into the subplots it does fall apart a bit for me. For the most part, grammar and spelling is done pretty well, but this area could have used a little more attention.

There are several major mistakes. Near the end, there is a spot where we suddenly have hopped into a different point of view. I would hope that an editor would find something like that.

Another major mistake, in my opinion, is the "cat coming out of the bag" scene in the middle of the book. The author does a wonderful job of setting up the action with the main characters not remembering how they got to this island. Then all of a sudden the reader is told why while the characters still don't know. I know the author wanted to be chronological and wanted to set the stage for later action. To me, the later action would have been better if we would have seen this scene later. Even though it would have been out of sequence, it would have saved the suspense up to that point and then would have set up the ending even better.

The last major mistake is that I don't quite believe the motives of the characters. Too many times, I ask "why would they do that?" While some things get answered in the ending, I just don't buy a lot of things. Some of it is in the how it was done. There are things where I believe that it would be this way, but I don't believe the how. For example the trust between characters. Too many times there is a bunch of unfounded trust going on. At one point, there is even some mistrust between Abby and Sarah only to be reversed and turned into full trust. Then there is some jealousy. You just can't have it both ways.

Anyway, I apologize if I am vague in my review. I don't want to spoil it if you do decide to read this book.

Don't get this book if you have plans for the day!

I downloaded this book just to check it out, and ended up finishing it in three hours. Escape is a great title; it describes this thriller perfectly.

Abby and Eric find themselves washed up on a lush tropical island, with no memory of how they got there. It's kind of like "Robinson Crusoe" meets "The Hunger Games." In the opening scene, Abby saves Eric from drowning in the surf, and the two form an alliance. Their goal is to survive and escape from their island prison. There are plenty of mysteries, and twists and turns that I never saw coming.

Amy and Eric discover that they are not alone, and finding other castaways adds to the mystery and tension. There is plenty of non-stop action and danger. The characters are well developed, and the reader immediately cares about them.

I debated on whether to give 4.5 stars because it could use more editing. I also thought I had trouble suspending disbelief a couple of times. However, since the author grabbed my attention from the beginning, straight to the end, I chose 5 stars. Escape, A New Life was exciting and David Antocci can write. The ending was satisfying and the first in the series stands on its own. In fact, as soon as I finished, I signed up to get the next one as soon as it comes out.

Very well done, it's great to see such a stunningly good debut novel.

It starts off like Lost then turns into something like the Truman show, with an abused mob wife added in to the mix. Definitely a bit bizarre, but mostly enjoyable, I thought the romance was a bit weak and not sure I'll be reading the next one, but it kept me reading.

I loved this story! I wasn’t really sure what to expect based on the synopsis. It had me thinking of the series Lost, but this was so much more. I'm interested in book 2.

The gravelly voice of the narrator had me wondering how things would go. I don’t know if maybe I was used to hearing non-gravelly voiced narrators or if he grew on me. Either way, I was a fan by the end. He had me thinking of narrators Travis Baldree and James Anderson Foster. They’re currently holding my #1 and #1 Favorite Male Narrators spots. (Joshua Saxon comes in at #3).

Questions/Comments:

Tom’s voice was creepy. I can’t imagine I was the only one to think so.

There was a part when the head lady of the production studio is upset that Abbie hadn’t said anything about her marriage. But she had. Hence, she’d brought her supposed husband to sign the papers for her. At that point in time, they hadn’t learned that her husband had been abusing her. So her statement about Abbie's marriage didn't make sense to me. I wish they would have told us who the man was.

How did they film the show? For example, Abbie finds the one woman’s shirt (I forgot her name) laying out in the open, then falls into the hole. Given that was a random spot on the island, where were they filming from? I wish more detail in that area would have been explained. Did they just have tiny cameras everywhere?

Sorry, but whenever there’s a kissing/making out/sex scene and the characters haven’t brushed their teeth, much less freshened up, it just grosses me out. Going weeks without brushing your teeth and you think it’s a good idea to kiss? Barf.

How did Abbie end up so confident? I get she didn’t remember her husband and what he’d put her through but still. If he’d broken her that much – strong and confident to meek and submissive – I had a hard time believing it.

I received a free audiobook copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Abby wakes on a beach with no idea when she arrived, why she’s dressed the way she is, or how she ended up in such great physical shape. And there’s a strange man floating in the ocean. After saving Eric and discovering that their predicament confuses him as much as it does Abby, they explore what appears to be a deserted island. But they aren’t alone and will have to fight to survive.

Although Abby is an appealing character, many of the secondary characters are unrealistic and flat. The main antagonist is a caricature of insanity and it’s confusing how he garnered followers. Antocci describes his settings well and the scenic effects depict the isolation of the environment, which plays an important role in delineating the plot. The storyline unravels with adequate pacing and the midpoint twist adds a topical content that’s relative to modern entertainment trends. Abby and Eric evolve in a believable way that keeps the reader firmly on their side. The novel resolves the main plot points, while introducing the opening scene for the next novel in the trilogy.

The multitude of dropped words and typographical errors makes it difficult to enjoy this novel. Antocci frequently mixes tenses in compound-complex sentences, forcing the reader to double back to ascertain the narrator’s meaning. Stronger editing is required to make this an engaging read.

Abby wakes up on a remote island next to a handsome stranger, she has no idea of who he is, where she is or how she got there. As she takes in her surroundings she discovers that she has a kick ass body and a knife strapped to her thigh, she doesnt know how this happened, last she remembers she was 22 and out of shape. She soon finds out why shes in this shape and has this new knowledge of how to survive in the wild remote island when these crazy people try to kill her and Eric at every turn. They soon realize its kill or be killed.. What they dont know is they had a chip planted in them to make them lose their memory and they are secretly on camera for a reality TV show called Trial Island. To win this game they have to survive on the Island for one year or escape the Island.. No one has been successful in 10 years..
THis was a pretty good story, I have to say I didnt see the reality Television part coming.. This story is similar to Hunger Games in that sense..
Enjoyed the story.

A survivor novel part one of 3. Abby wakes up on a deserted beach not remembering how she got there and has no idea where she is. She meets Eric who she seems to connect with and as the explore the island they meet others who are not so friendly. This is a suspenseful novel full of twists and turns and the reader has no idea how or why these people ended up stranded on an uninhabited island. As it is revealed, it is a surprise and the suspense keeps on going right to the end, leaving you with a cliff hanger. The only solution is to get the next book in the series. Excellent storyline and a bit different than most.

was hard to get into it reminded me of a film called cast away being stranded on island . at first i thought it was just a kidnap where these people were dumped on this island and made to survive or die , then as u get nearly over half way through the book it switches to being a game show where u had to compete to survive and if u manage to get off the island then u win money and ur freedom this is a series of three books i am now reading 2nd in collection and hoping it will be easy to get into .

Abby sees a man floating in the ocean and decides to go help him back to shore. Little does she know that she’s been stranded on an island that is part of a tv show. Eric is the man that Abby saves cause he looked like he was drowning due to a fall from the cliffs. These two start a courtship that transcends time and a past that neither can remember. Once the game is over the truth comes to light and things become more complicated for both Eric and Abby. Will they survive her past in the next book only reading it will tell me the whole story.

Abby saves Eric from drowning; but neither knows where they are and why they are here. Amnesia? Have they been kidnapped? Is this land an island and how are they going to survive? Who will help them?
When the reader learns the what, where, and why Eric and Abby are on this tropical island "A New Life" takes a turn that seems like another writer takes charge of the book. Everything speeds up and resolves way to fast for me.
Truly wanted to give 4.5*s to "A New Life" but could't. Maybe someone else would appreciate this book more than I did.

New genre for me

It took me a while to get into this, so much mystery going on between the main characters that I almost gave up caring how or why they were in the place they had found themselves. Just as I was about to lose interest the big revelation came, then the whole thing changed. I enjoyed reading this but found the ending was a bit predictable, which is why I only gave four stars. In fairness to the author the story is well written and fast paced, it's just not my favourite kind of read.

Eric and Abby each wake up on a deserted island beach with no idea how they got there and do not know each other. As they explore the interior of the island they encounter Robert who lives off the grid on the island and separate band of people who seem to want to kill them. Abby is quick to take down threats with strength and skill that surprises her. As they encounter danger and rough terrain, they seek an answer of how to get off the island and who put them there. Meanwhile, a crime boss is looking for Abby wh suddenly disappeared. Page turning thriller.

They wake up in an island, lying on the sand and dirty. They don't know how. They don't recognize their bodies or the people around them. But they know their names and where they come from. Why are they there and how did it happen?

~ off the charts ridiculous with a mix of way too much flirtation when they're supposed to be in survival mode. Dialogue is often immature and unrealistic for their supposed age. Enjoyed very little.

Great book

Loved the strong female character. Not many books portray a woman who is capable of saving herself without the help of a man. I also enjoyed the relationship that Abby and Eric had, how they worked together to survive, their trust of each other. The fact that they were willing to endanger themselves for each other and for Emily showed they were good human beings. The love story was a new addition.

I think the main storyline of this book is what kept me reading. Apart from a riveting plot, there isn't a whole lot that this book has to offer. The dialogue between the characters is pretty dry, and the relationship that forms between the two main characters is not so great. The way that this book ends is amazing, and I was upset that the whole book was not written in the same fashion. It's almost like the last 50 or so pages was written by a different person than Antocci.

It took me a little bit to get into the book wondering if I had accidentally gotten a book from the paranormal genre (not my favorite). I figured I'd give it a few chapters before I gave up and soon thought "oh... this is more like a Hunger Games" book and then I was off and running. Once I got into the book and the characters I really enjoyed it and was anxious to see where the story took me - with a lot of ups and downs and reasons to page-turn.

"Escape, A New Life" (2014) by David Antocci is a very unique adventure novel primarily featuring Abby, a young woman who wakes up on an island with no idea how she got there. She is joined by Eric, a man in the same condition. The two form an alliance and fight off a band of people who have been on the island for months before them. No great prose displayed but I cared about the two main characters and their plight. The book is the first in a three-part series. Solidly recommended.
