One of the best horror anthologies I have read. Each story is short and sweet and there is always that little chill of what if lurking. I will admit that often in reading an anthology, I find only a couple of stories that I enjoy and that I am ambivalent about much of the others; however, this treat pushed the right buttons. I enjoyed almost every one of these offerings with the exception of one that scared the wits out of me; nope I am not saying which one, I will let you discover these chills all on your own. In the reading of this anthology I giggled, shuddered in horror, and sat back with that holy cow you did not say that feeling, which all in all left me very satisfied indeed. Definitely recommend for those who enjoy short little snippets of horror to enjoy all at once or just a short treat on that occasional coffee break where you can imagine the mean boss or supervisor getting the starring role as the victim. To top it off all of the proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to a non-profit organization supporting child literacy. I requested this book from the author and received it with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
Short horror fiction inspired by old grindhouse films seen at the drive-in and on late-night tv back in the day. Twenty tales told with economy and style, in which we meet swamp monsters and self-destructing starlets, evil men brought down by hubris and supernatural vengeance. Some tales are over the top and others as subtle as anything from Hitchcock. All are horrifying visually or psychologically or both. Don’t read by flashlight unless you’re willing to spend the night with your head under the covers, too freaked to peek out.
Enjoyable anthology of short, easily readable tales mostly inspired by the campy horror/sci-fi/fantasy films of the drive-in era. Will probably "review" in more detail on my blog soon. (updated: https://bibliophilica.wordpress.com/2... ) Probably closer to 3.5 stars than 3. A few weak stories and some careless editing ( isn't the femur in the UPPER leg!?) :-)
An excellent choice for fans longing for the return of those drive-in movie days where you could spend hours reveling in back to back B-movie horror. I am definitely the wrong audience for this book. It wound up being far too graphically violent for me and I evidently don't appreciate what is essentially a B-movie turned into a short story. If those are things you like then absolutely pick up a copy of this book! Even better, all the proceeds go to LitWorld.org, a non-profit dedicated to supporting youth and communities and fostering a love of reading, writing, creating, and communicating.
