Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.

Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discovered a love of exotic places and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward they spent a number of years travelling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever necessary.) Eventually they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain and the small almond farm they now call home.

Nina spends her days reading, writing and riding her mare, Gencianna, under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.

Nina's writing mixes romance with elements of the paranormal and science fiction

4.5 - You can't trust anyone. Stars!

I am literally running out of nice things to say about Nina Croft and her books. She is an author that quite simply writes books I want to read, gives me stories that I get lost in, and characters I get involved with whilst learning about them through their adventures.

The Descartes Legacy did exactly that, and I enjoyed the thrills and spills that Jenna and Luke went through together, and separately in order to discover the truth about Jenna unique abilities, her fathers past, and what he was involved with. Full of action, sexual tension and a few unexpected surprises, I was once again kept entertained by the author’s storytelling.

”Don’t sell yourself for me… I’m not worth it, and I won’t thank you for it.”

1.5 stars! *

I either like or hate the insta love. In this case it was the latter.

Another book by NINA CROFT that let me down. In this case it's partly because of the sci-fi sub theme.

There was some sort of a moon conspiracy and theory. Sometimes I was bit lost (not sure if it was my fault or not :D).

My head was spinning most of the time because there was one major event after another and there was too damn drama. So much of it. Emotional overload.

The characters were simple minded. Me Tarzan, you Jane. The insta love between them was off putting. They knew each other for a week and 4 days they were seperated. They didn't have time to fall in love. They knew nothing about each other. They didn't even really know themselves.

Luke's wife daugther was killed ten years ago and he spend ten year seeking revenge.

Jenna is ill (not mentaly, although sometimes it seemed like it). In the end it turns out that she's

Not my cup of tea.

AND it ends in a fucking cliffhanger? I suffer through the whole book for it to end in a cliffhanger? I must have done something terrible for Karma to punish me so badly..

I had a chance to read this and Oh My God, what a ride. There's romance, and it has a great mystery. Actually, there are a couple of wonderful twists and turns in this. It has a Dan Brown kind of feel. It's one of my favorite books I've read this year and I can't wait for the next one. And for the record, I edit for the company that distributes this book. But I feel like that shouldn't keep me from suggesting it to my friends. Consider it a little inside information. :)

Thank you, Rob, mysterious partner of Nina. I'm glad you survived her (rightly) rage when you dared to suggest her to write a "good book". I have to say she'a a saint or you are really lucky. I guess any other woman might have robbed you of your life (or at least your family jewels).

Thank you Nina, for resisting the urge to kill and delivered us with such romp.

The Descartes Legacy is a futuristic thriller centred around Jenna Young and the sudden deaths surrounding her. It deals with paranoia, secrets, and conspiracies. It starts high and never let the readers down. I started reading one weekend morning and couldn't stop until I finished late the same afternoon. (Partner and cats were than't happy, mind you).

There's not much I can say about this book, without giving away spoiler. Even the small facts that bothered me at the beginning were explained at the end.

This is the perfect book for fan of adrenaline-filled adventure or thriller novels. And more so for fans with a romantic streak, because at the end Ms Croft couldn't really keep her promise to Rob and a small thread of romance trickled in.

The story ends with the novel, but it's an open ending. So there might be some other adventure in the future of Luke and Jenna. And who knows, maybe they'll save the day again. (And pay the price for that too).

Still there? Go fetch it. It's the perfect light read for an autumn day to spend cozied in bed :)

Originally published at Sci-Fi Romance Quarterly

The Descartes Legacy takes a fairly standard romantic suspense story and enhances it with a bit of science fiction in order to create a “can’t stop reading” experience.

All the elements of romantic suspense are right there; heroine experiences a major life change event that makes her investigate something mysterious. Said investigation pushes the buttons of some very shady customers and heroine finds herself in serious jeapardy without knowing why. In swoops hero to save her life and help her with her investigation. Bad guys continue to pursue for nefarious reasons. Heroine makes life-changing discovery. Evildoers attempt to suppress heroine’s knowledge. After climactic fight, hero and heroine start new life together.

Just because something follows a formula, doesn’t mean that the author hasn’t taken the elements of that formula into new and interesting directions. In the case of The Descartes Legacy, those elements were born on the moon.

Really.

Jenna Young believes that she is dying. She believes that she has a genetic disease and that her father-the-doctor has been giving her medicine to keep the disease at bay. Then he dies suddenly and she’s running out of meds.

She thinks she’s sick, so she turns to another doctor to get the medication she needs. Her friend gets tortured and killed, and she has no idea why.

What she did makes perfect sense, based on what she believed. But what she believed isn’t true. Over the course of the story, Jenna discovers that nothing she believed about herself and her origins is true.

Her father didn’t just lie, he covered up his part in a world-spanning power-hungry organization called “The Conclave”. An organization whose genetic experimentation both created Jenna, and ordered her “termination” at age 4.

Jenna’s always known she was different. But as she is forced to dive into the murky politics of The Conclave, she discovers just how different she is.

And Jenna’s not the only one peering into the depths of the Conclave’s evil, nor is the death of her doctor-friend the only torture-and-murder to be laid at their door.

Lucas Grafton has been looking for revenge against that organization for ten years, since they murdered his wife and daughter. But Luke’s search for justice runs him headlong into Jenna’s need for the truth.

Luke starts out uncertain whether Jenna is an innocent bystander, a co-conspirator, or bait in a trap. Eventually he discovers that she is all three, but by then, he’s willing to sacrifice anything to keep her safe.

And she feels the same way about him.

Escape Rating A-: The story ends with a series of stunning revelations that make the reader yearn for more. It doesn’t feel so much that things have concluded as that there is a pause in the action. Jenna and Luke’s story isn’t over, and I want to know what happens next. Very, very much.

The science fictional elements in The Descartes Legacy are of the “laboratory” variety rather than the space ship type. It’s not just that Jenna was created through some very tricky genetic engineering, but it’s the source of some of her genetic material that pushes the story through the science fiction envelope.

The “Descartes” in the title is not a reference to Renaissance philosopher and mathematician René Descartes, at least not directly. It refers to the Descartes Highlands on the moon, and to Apollo 16’s mission there.

The Conclave is a many-headed, completely heartless beast of an organization. The plot that Jenna and Luke discover is chilling in its inhumanity. Discovering the nature of that plot and stopping it add to the breakneck pace of the story.

But this is also a romance, and that part of the story hinges on the chemistry between Jenna and Luke. For all the science fiction, their story together has a few too many times when Jenna is a drugged and helpless captive, waiting for Luke to rescue her. Considering the powers she discovers during the story, she gets kidnapped a bit often.

And there was definitely a touch of insta-love in their relationship. But the thriller and suspense elements still kept me racing to finish the story.

Overall The Descartes Legacy by Nina Croft was a good book. I personally read it in a day.

The story revolves around two main characters Luke Grafton who has spent the last ten years hunting the Conclave, a secret organization who took everything from him. He gets a hot lead takes him to London and right to Jenna Young.

Jenna was born with a genetic illness, she has always felt different and has kept herself apart from any personal relationships. But the unexpected death of her father catapults her into a world of murder and terrorism she never expected.

The book throws a lot of twists and turns in the story which makes it hard to put down. Like my title states it is a thriller. Its fast paced with well developed and likeable main characters. Jenna is a strong female character who needs to uncover the truth of herself that makes her question everything. Luke has a need for revenge but also realizes he still has love inside of him which surprises himself and Jenna since she has always closed herself off from others. Their relationship feels real and develops quickly but realistically.

Points that were confusing:
British Terminology: Very beginning they were going into the "surgery" - now I am thinking an actually surgery is going on -- then I jumped to that this is a surgery center they were entering then after continuing to read I think they were just talking about his doctors office -- so that was a bit confusing --actually I would say that the entire first chapter was confusing.

This was an enjoyable read. I liked the intrigue right off the bat with Jenna's illness and the antagonist's recognition of her, telling us Jenna was deeply involved in whatever disaster threatened London. Luke is also a likeable, swoon worthy hero with flaws and ghosts of his own, which I love in a hero. I have to say I'm a big fan of British TV, books and the general attitudes and humor of the British, so I quite enjoyed the language and "voice" of the characters.

The romance took a back seat to the mystery in my opinion, but it was still well rounded and still heartfelt. The plot moved along well, and although the most immediate threat was averted by the end, the main story arc seemed as though it will continue into another book. One I will most definitely read.

I had a few brow raising moments, but not many, like one decision on Jenna's part to do something she knew would endanger the lives of others, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book. Overall, Ms. Croft helped me escape into another world for a while, and I would recommend this book to those who love a good mystery, lots of action, and a hard-won romance.

Jenna is a female character very tough, she will not let go easily hysterics despite her life is overwhelmed by a wave of violence and a lot of murders. She's smart, intelligent and ready to react to what happens. Because of her supposed illness she has always kept everyone at a safe distance, but on this occasion she needs help.
Luke has lived for years with only one purpose: his revenge, for this he has always been willing to use any method: the end justifies the means, but this time, unwittingly, Jenna goes under his skin overcome his barriers and draw them on a personal level.

The narrative is engaging, and slowly you find out all the ins and outs of Jenna and her relation unintentionally with Conclave.
Lauren, one of the people at the top of the Organization, is a character who get me chills, seen her coldness and cynicism.
The conclusion of the story has an ending quite open, ... Is going to become a series? I tried to look at the author's website, but it isn't any word at all in this regard. We will see, because I have some curiosity about what is going to happen between Luke and Jenna.

Oh geez. Once again, Entangled gets me. For a baby publisher like Entangled, they certainly get some of the best books. I’m so in love with this company. And their covers totally rock. Yet again, another cover I can love on. So to speak.

Anyway, now on to the book. At first I wasn’t sure what to think or if I’d really get into this book. A doctor Jenna had visited the day before ends up murdered and somehow it connects back to her. She’s in a bad way because her own father (her life-long physician) had died a few weeks earlier and the special medication he’s been giving her to keep her mysterious illness at bay is about to run out (hence why she’d visited a new doctor, in hopes that he could replicate the formula).

Luke shows up and is investigating the same murder, in pursuit of revenge for the death of his wife and child ten years earlier. Jenna turns out to be his only possible lead to the organization he’s been chasing, since they apparently want Jenna too. His initial plan quickly changes as he starts developing feelings for her.

There are tons of exciting chase scenes and plenty of suspicion and doubt about the trustworthiness of the heroine and hero (toward each other).

Ms. Croft has a perfect sense of timing, never spending too much, or rushing through, any given aspect of her story. I really felt like I got to know the main characters (including the villain) and their goals were realistic. I mean, who could blame Luke for wanting payback for his wife’s death, or Jenna wanting to live on.

The only slightly weak spot was the slight predictability with regard to how the antagonist related to Jenna. I saw that connection coming well in advance of the revelation. Between that and a slight disappointment as to how the various threads wrapped up (it seemed a little too easy, the final disposition of the antagonist), I had to drop this from a 5-star rating to 4.5.

The illness Jenna has provides another driving force to the plot, especially as Ms. Croft guides us into discovering the truth about Jenna and where Jenna comes from (in many ways, not just sperm/egg donor-wise). The inclusion of the Descartes Highlands on the moon, and how that related to the story was also fascinating and I feel could be a very real possibility, given how many secrets the government keeps from the general public.

Anyway, great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves thrillers mixed with a hefty dash of romance.

The Descartes Legacy follows the story of Jenna and the mystery she finds herself involved in. With the death of her father, she finds herself in need of assistance. After the doctor she turns to for help ends up murdered, Jenna becomes a target. Luke is convinced that Jenna could hold the key in solving the mystery of just what exactly the plan codenamed Descartes is. Meanwhile the Conclave will stop at nothing to tie up loose ends and achieve their goals.

At first I wasn't sure where the story would take us. The book alternates point of views between both Jenna and Luke, with a few bits of other character's p.o.v.s thrown into the mix. Neither of which truly know what is going on, though he does have a better idea. And the mystery they have to solve is a pretty big one, and that's before thing really turn deadly. There is so much tossed into the mystery that our heroes have to solve, and yet the author does a good job with it all. There were times early on I was questioning a few things...things that later turned out to be important when we finally know the truth about it all.

Throughout the book you learn things about the characters. The more you learn the more you can understand their motivations and appreciate the web in which they all are connected. I cannot say much here without spoiling things, but the author creates a very interesting cast of characters that really made the story all that much better.

As the pages flew by, I did not want to put this book down. I just had to know what happened and the hows and whys of things. A few things were predictable but that didn't detract from the story because the author added slight twists to make them more unique. If you like mystery/trillers, then give this one a try.

If you enjoy Sci-Fi romantic suspense, The Descartes Legacy is a great choice. Jenna finds herself suddenly without the medication she takes for a genetic illness when her father dies in a car accident. A letter sent on the event of his death puts Jenna in the middle of a violent world she could have never imagined.

Luke has lost it all to the Conclave: a worldwide clandestine organization lead by the most powerful and rich of the planet who stop at nothing to further their own agendas. Set on destroying them whatever the cost, he’s been gathering intel for the last decade. When a lead points him to Jenna and he finds her in the middle of a murder investigation, things begin to get interesting.

Jenna just doesn’t know who to trust or what the hell is happening to her. As Luke and his people keep unearthing secret after secret, her life seems to spin out of her control.

Jenna was incredibly strong, the world kept shifting under her feet but she didn’t let it take her down. Resilient and ultimately selfless she was a fantastic leading lady. Luke was committed to his cause, but when he realized what Jenna meant to him, his priorities diversified. He was in command, aloof and sexy. A badass with a tender side: pure yumminess.

I do have to confess that while the suspense and action sides of The Descartes Legacy are extremely well done, I didn’t completely connect with the romantic aspect. I was never totally engaged with Jenna and Luke’s relationship.

This is a fascinating and entertaining book I really enjoyed, but I haven’t been able to find the following book, as it finished in an HFN with a month as the time frame… is the next installment out there or in the works? Because if it isn’t well, that’s just plain mean!

At the end of The Descartes Legacy Nina Croft tells how this book came to be. It seems that one morning at breakfast Bob, her other half, asked her why she didn’t write a good book? She says; “He survived (just) and I discovered his idea of a “good book” was one with no romance, no vampires, werewolves, or aliens. I managed some of that, although the romance crept in (hey, I like romance) and just a tiny, little alien. I hope he likes it.”

I don’t know how Bob feels about the result but I really liked it.

Jenna Young is a great character. She is pro-active, stronger than she thinks and does not wait on others to save her. She has been taught to keep others out of her life but changes when she needs to in order to survive. I loved her reaction to all that happened and how she took control in the end.

Luke Grafton is the ultimate loner, shutting everything personal out of his life. He has a single-minded goal, find and destroy the Conclave. When Jenna shows up on his radar as a way to get answers he tries to maintain his distance. That is where the romance crept in.

The Descartes Legacy is a very well written and plotted story. From start to finish the tension never lets up. Just when I though I knew what was going on a new surprise that changed everything was dropped into the action. Everything from the world building to the character development kept the story moving. Look for an exciting finish but it only solves part of the problem. Now I have to wait for the sequel to see what happens next.

I really enjoyed The Descartes Legacy. It was a mix of sci-fi, mystery, crime, thriller, with a bit of hot romance thrown in for good measure.

I don't want to give too much away of the plot as it might lead to spoilers, but it kept me guessing throughout. It was fast paced, action packed mystery, with twists and turns galore. A character is even killed off in the first chapter!

I really liked the two main characters; Jenna and Luke. Jenna was an intelligent, strong, independent young woman, who could kick some serious butt. Luke was a mysterious hottie with a mission. The chemistry between the two sizzled right from the beginning. I have to admit I wasn't all that keen on the more or less insta-love aspect of the book, but it wasn't a huge part of the book so it didn't put me off.

As I'm from the UK I love when I get to read something set here, I can picture where the characters are. Quite often the books I tend to read are set in the USA. I did notice a few times that the book flitted between British terminology and American terminology which I found a bit strange when the book was set in London. For example parking lot (which would be car park) and side walk (pavement). I know its pretty minor.

I'm hoping there is going to be a sequel. I'll definitely be adding it to my reading wish list.

I'd recommend The Descartes Legacy to anyone who likes a crime/thriller with a hint of sci-fi.

This book is a very intriguing and thrilling read with a touch of science fiction.

Luke spends all his time trying to take down the Conclave, the group of people responsible for the loss of his family. Jenna was born with a genetic illness and after her father dies she is catapulted into a world of murder and terrorism. Luke’s need to revenge clashes with his need to protect Jenna and she learns secrets that rock the very foundation of her life.

With action from beginning to end, this story is very engaging with surprising twists that keep the reader guessing. The action scenes are depicted in a well orchestrated and believable way that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The author has created a world with a well developed plot that is fast paced and entertaining with characters that have strong, captivating personalities that draw the reader deeper into the story.

The story concentrates more on the conflict and suspense more than romance, but the chemistry between the Luke and Jenna is strong and undeniable and the author captures their emotions with clarity.

While I haven’t found anything that supports that the author is going to make this a series, I certainly believe there will be one. The ending of the book had a conclusion but it strongly suggests more to come and there was several questions and unresolved issues. I found the book to be an enjoyable read and I will be very disappointed if there is not another book.

Fast-paced, edgy story about a woman, Jenna, caught up something she had no idea was even possible and a man, Luke, who have been after the Conclave's blood for over decade. At some points, The Descartes Legacy makes reader's heart beat faster and there was times when it seemed impossible for the main characters survive. Croft knows how to write suspense and keep reader on his/her toes while developing character's relationship.

The Descartes Legacy is more mystery and action packed story with underlying romance, and sci-fi themes. There's a couple of steamy scenes and it's visible how Croft writes more romance than anything else. However, mystery and sci-fi themes didn't cause any problems for her as the story flowed forward with a firm pace.

Only thing I felt lacking was Jenna and Luke's relationship's developement. Yes, they had steamy scenes and they fit together perfectly but I yearned more of those little moments they had together. It would have been nice to stop for a couple of more minutes with all that action packed and on the edge of destruction -thing going on.

I liked The Descartes Legacy but it didn't blow my mind, hence the three stars. I recommend this one especially for those who enjoys lots of action with mysteries all around but still wants a little romance and steamy couple.

This was a solid mystery / thriller, but it lacked both the romance and the science fiction I was hoping for. From simply a thriller aspect, Croft gets an A+, including two strong characters, a driving plot, a page-turning mystery and good pacing. But, this was categorized as a science fiction romance, and so that's what I expected and why I picked it. Unfortunately, as a science fiction romance reader, I was left a little disappointed.

The science fiction was a bit underdeveloped for my personal tastes, and it read like more of a biological or medical thriller than a science fiction for most of the book. I would have liked the actual sci-fi part (which I won't spoil) to have been more of the story. Same goes for the romance. It was good, I just wished there had been a bit more of it. I would call this more a Thriller with sci-fi and romantic elements than a sci-fi romance.

For the most part, the romance just kinda happens. There's no true build-up or reasoning behind it aside from a few tingles when they get near or that they are stuck in a situation together. In other words, I didn't feel any chemistry between them. Plus, Luke's lying to her to whole time, making it all bit suspect.

Overall though, it was a good read, just not what I had been hoping for since it's not really a science fiction romance like I was told it was.

Jenna Young has a problem. She has run out of the special medication formulated by her late father to manage her disease and needs to have more made. He bequeaths her a note directing her to a Professor, but she decides to go to a friend instead. And then the crap hits the fan. Murder, mystery, aliens, and adventure ensue. Her only clue to the mystery of her life is Descartes.

Luke Grafton has been on a mission of vengeance for years. The Conclave, a group of people concerned with power, money and world domination, have their grubby mitts in all sorts of horrors, including the murder of Luke's wife and young baby. Descartes is the key.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were interesting and realistic. The mystery drew me in and dragged me through the action. It was a nice twist on relatively common themes. Well done! The Romance was built on fast attraction, but it wasn't insta-love to me. The pace was steady and like a long novel, felt good. The story has a HFN ending. I didn't think it was a cliffhanger, but rather left openings for another book, while answering all the big questions posed in this story.

Descartes Legacy by Nina Croft should come with a warning label, “Once started, no housework will be done and you will miss sleep to finish!” That is exactly what happened to me. A little romance, a lot of mystery and just enough alien (5% of one character’s makeup) to make this a super story. I kept trying to guess the outcome, while I did get a few early guesses correct, like who is Jenna’s mother; I was blow away by the end of the book. This is a thinking person’s book, though not for the squeamish. The violence started early and was more graphic than usual in a romance book, which means this could be labeled a thriller with some romance. While the story ends neatly tied up, it also opens up the way for a sequel. I really want to know what will happen in a month’s time for Callum and Jenna.

Kindly provided with an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review........

Okay peeps......here is another one of my UBER quick review's because when a book is damn good, its damn good and nothing much needs to be said.............

This is Luke and Jenna's story.......he's lost it all......shes at the point that she doesn't have much left to believe in..........There is death, mystery, revenge, distrust and love.......oh yeah baby !!

These two meet and a whole bunch of events unfold.......

Yup, me likey my summary !.I would definitely recommend. I will also be keeping a weathered eye out for more of Nina's work.

Well done Nina for a rocking read and many thanks to Netgalley for this opportunity xx

Later peeps xxx

This author each time delivers to me a read that I can escape with a possible adventure. This one most certainly contained a adventure, one that was refreshing while keeping me attached to it from start to finish. A mystery brings two people together-Lucas and Jenna. The why's are different but it leads to one name on both of their clues. Even though this is one this author has written earlier in her career it still is exciting. She mixes the intrigue with romance as in this case a out of this world kind of drama that keeps you accelerated with times on edge. You wont put this down until there is no more mystery.

The science-fiction and intrigue portion of this story was very well done. It kept me turning the pages to read it all at once! I had to know the answer to the mystery surrounding Jenna.

I felt the romance was not as strong, however. I would have liked to connect with both Jenna and Luke more strongly than I did.

I do hope there is a second book in this series, as I must know what happens next!

*I was given a free ebook by the author in return for an honest review*
Reading this book meant a very late night for me as I couldn’t put it down. The story felt fresh so the twists and turns held my interest very well. The mysterious Conclave was a good ‘villain’ and the main characters were intriguing. I also liked the romance and sci fi which were thrown into the pot and they enhanced the storyline rather than overwhelming it. A great thriller and recommended reading.

Great science fiction tale if an alien/human woman who is being presumed by the conclave, an agency that will stop at nothing to find her. She is rescued by a survivor of a conclave attack whose goal in life is to stop them. They learn to rely on each other and end up in love. Her mother adds a twist to this great read.
