200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm unleashed their stories upon the world. Literally. Now the characters of the Grimms’ stories walk among us. With every day that passes, they grow more evil. They are the Corrupted, and only a hero can stop them.
For 18-year-old Alice Goodenough, that means taking precious time off from her summer vacation. In addition to volunteering at the local library, Alice must stop the Corrupted who are now actively hunting her down. With the help of her magic pen and her trusty rabbit friend, the world has suddenly gotten a lot more complex. The Corrupted are everywhere, and only Alice can see them for what they truly are.
This book contains 3 episodes of the critically acclaimed series:
Book 7: The Giant Slayer Europe: birthplace of Grimms' Fairy Tales. Meet Alice Goodenough, 18 years old who is a hero ready to take on any form of dangers, new monsters and new surprises. Alice and her fencing team set off to Europe for a fencing tournament in Romania paid by Mr. Sam Grayle. Mr. Grayle decided to fully fund their trip with one important thing in mind, to use Alice to find a hidden treasure.
Book 8: Darkness Rising 200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm brought their stories to life. Not only does she has to find the hidden treasure but also worry about her team as they found out that they were no match against the other fencers who look more experience and full of energy.
Book 9: Malevolence. As the stories develop, Alice's body is breaking down from constant battle. Her loved ones are in danger so she must prepare and find new strength to battle. She must face off against the ancient evil that lurks within Castle Vontescue.
What a great read packed with adventures. I love the TV series Grimm and this book is all about Grimm. If you love reading about Werewolves, Vampires, Monsters and Giants then the Grimm Chronicles is the best book to read. But wait, there’s a cliffhanger at the end of Vol 3. Watch out for Vol 4. I hope so.
FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
I called quits on this after two episodes and the accompanying short story. It feels like it lost some of that YA silly fun and written for TV breeziness that made it an easy read. I'm not a big fan of teenage sports fiction, and there's a fair bit about a fencing tournament in this story arc which could have been part of the turn off for me. There's also less character development in favour of Alice running off to fight things without her friends (even Briar doesn't get as much to do). The sports/fight scenes got a little repetitive in the end. It's an interesting story world, but I think it may have lost it's shine for me after leaving their library behind.
But this ended in a cliffhanger. I took away one star because of the cliffhanger. Otherwise I very much enjoyed these books. I love that the translated Grimm stories are included.
Omg....what just happened? I knew it was going to happen but I am still shocked and screaming NOoooool inside my head(as hubby is sleeping) and if you want to know what happened, you need to go read it.
Multiple fairytales are used throughout the story, one after another, that you don’t know where the next threat will emerge. Then at very exciting points one is on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
Once the current hero has more info about the previous heros, she finds that things come easier. Unfortunately, she realizes that she has bitten off more than she can chew because the corrupted are now going after her friends!
Alice’s adventures as the Hero continue in Volume three as she and her fencing team travel to Europe to compete in a tournament, courtesy of Sam Grayle, the Corrupted dwarf who is seemingly invincible. The team must battle their own fears as they see their competition in the tournament while Alice, Seth and Chad need to deal with the Corrupted they encounter.
Alice’s fears for her friends safety leads her to stay isolated in her battles, disappearing on her own to investigate Corrupted related occurrences. This stubbornness results in Alice’s body taking a beating. By the end she is physically and mentally weak and must use a new talent to beat the ultimate enemy: The Malevolence.
Once again, I was sucked into Alice’s adventures. Each story becomes tighter and more focused the writing crisper and more engaging. Alice wants to do everything on her own at this point, she is so scared of losing her loved ones after the last Corrupted prophesized their death. While helping Sam Grayle locate a treasure and learning a few more Hero tricks such as traveling as an astral body, Alice prepares to battle a creature so evil he seems unstoppable. The Hero is not infallible and definitely not immortal and Alice understands she might not live to see the end of this battle.
The end of this book was jaw dropping. I even yelled at the book I was so shocked. And then I went and bought the next book The Black Towers so I could find out what happened. So you know it must be good…or maybe bad ;) I’ll leave it to you.
4.5 out of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book for an honest review
If you love rooting for an exciting hero who continues to face great challenges then you will continue to love reading about Alice. The Grimm Chronicles volume three introduces more characters who push Alice to more extremes than ever.
This round, Alice and her fencing team travel to Europe to compete in a tournament. But, just because they have traveled abroad doesn't mean they won't encounter the Corrupted. In this latest feat of heroism Alice finds that her body is becoming weakened with all of the battles and she must find other ways to detect the creatures she faces along with ensuring that her team and friends stay safe.
Again, the stories are separated but Alice still continues with her battles. Treasure hunting, fighting even more dangerous creatures and emotional attachments bring Alice to the point of wanting to work alone. Readers will meet Tom Thumb and some unruly giants in The Giant Slayer, other stories include Darkness Rising, Malevolence The Lost Diary of Abigail Bauer.
Fontaine and Brosky continue to create riveting stories with a great fairytale theme but based for an older and more mature audience. The depth and detail of the emotion in this series constitutes for a deeper attachment and appreciation of the characters along with detailed imagery of the places these characters encounter continues to keep readers engaged and looking forward to the next book.
I was so excited when Alice received the chance to travel abroad with the fencing team. Then, the realization came that she was walking directly in to old world Brothers Grimm territory, and I knew that she was in for something a lot tougher then she had ever faced before. There was no way she was getting out of this easily. I really love the relationships between Alice and Chase. She honestly cares about him so much from the get go! She simply wants to protect him. I am glad they finally both admit their feelings. I think they are great for one another. They have that relationship where they make each other better, sometimes it seems like a push, but it all works out! I have to say that I adore Seth in this one. I'm happy that he moves past Trisha. Sanda and him definitely fit together a lot better. I really think it's great that he still helps Alice. He is probably one of the best friends she could ever ask for. The ending, however, left my heart on the floor in a million pieces. Really? Come on! I'm ready for the next one, so they can fix this ending or say it never happened!
This volume follows our hero, Alice, and her friends to Europe for a fencing tournament. And in case that sounds a little unlikely, the whole thing was arranged by Sam Grayle, the big-money dwarf Corrupted whom Alice has had to play nice with since the end of volume 1. While the east-central-European setting doesn't always work as well as it should (too many people speak English, and it isn't nearly as cold as it should be in January), Alice meets some entertaining people along the way, and her new tasks are exciting, with very high stakes. In fact, despite a major resolution in the overall story arc, we're also left with quite the cliff-hanger! I look forward to reading the final volume to see if Alice can solve it all.
Simply fantastic. I'm quite enjoying this series, though at the end of each set of books, I forget that there's the index of fairy tales, so when my kindle says I'm @ 91%, I expect more story, but it's over :( I like the way Bronsky and Fontaine intersperse old Hero diary entries and also chapters from Briar's perspective throughout. Also, as with the other books, it's rather helpful to have read the appropriate fairy tale before the chapter, so their references are great. Can't wait for volume 4; volume 3 seemed like it left off too abruptly! Must find out what happens...won't put a spoiler here.
I couldn't recall what happened at the end of the second volume. My Goodreads two-sentence review said that I quite admired the anti-bullying stance of the second volume.
What else? Oh yeah... Girl power! Alice goes out every night battling baddies while the guy stays home worrying.
The third volume continues Alice's story as she battles against the Corrupted, characters from Grimms' Fairy Tales that went evil. Everything is drawing to a close now and this volume sets up the final battle in the fourth.
this was an amazing book, I just love it ok......it has everything!!!!!! romance, action, mystery, fiction, fairytales, scary parts, and all that good stuff......I would definitely recommend this series to everyone :D I'm gonna start the next volume now....lol I hope everyone enjoys this series as much as I have so far
Oh boy. Once again we are pulled into Alice's world of fighting the Corrupted and this time they are in Europe, as her school's fencing team travels for a competition. I loved how Alice struggled to stay focused on the competition as a normal everyday teen, yet still fulfill her role as the hero. That ending though...oh man. Not sure how I feel about that. Gotta grab volume 4 now.
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always loved Fairy Tales and read the Grimm ones and Hans Christian Anderson. The dark twist on these stories has been lots of fun to read. Look forward to Book 4.
I liked all the characters, but it was some times hard to follow. The Hero is smart, but I don't know anyone who knows that many fairytales. However, I did enjoy reading all three of the books so far.
DNF: The series is very good, but this volume doesn't really differentiate itself from volumes 1 and 2. I enjoyed the parts that I read, but haven't felt compelled to complete the book.
