After the attack at his father’s amusement park, Daniel cannot believe what he’s capable of. He tries to lock himself away and protect those he loves… until he finds out that the monster within did not get there by accident, and the one responsible didn’t stop with him.

Sarah remembers the stories her mother used to tell her: of a place where the sun shone brightly and bird songs filled the air; a place where home wasn’t a cramped cell; a place where your own mind didn’t try to torment you. She wants nothing more than to be free of this living hell... even if that means she won’t get out alive.

Jack is fed up of chasing the serial killer with no name, whose favourite game is creating monsters out of living people. He just wants to catch him before anyone else gets hurt… but reaching that goal becomes much more dangerous than anyone could have guessed.

When these three strangers find their lives colliding on an island from which there is no escape, they must work together if they want to survive. But how do they fight against a force that doesn't really exist?

THE DOCTORis in and Hell will be unleashed, unless he is stopped…

Three people will come together in an unlikely alliance in a desperate attempt to stop the man responsible for the living hell he put them through. Jennifer Bull’s THE DOCTOR is a dark tale of horror, the desperate quest to maintain one’s sanity and the knowledge that even death is better than the ministrations of a madman.

A trip to his father’s amusement park ends up in a nightmare for Daniel and it was more than a case of a random terror. Sarah lives like a caged bird, but her prison isn’t gilded with gold. Jack is determined to capture the serial killer who stays just out of his reach, whose favorite pastime is fashioning his own monstrous creations.

Jennifer Bull’s writing is both intriguing and cleverly dark as she weaves a tale of terror with the precision of a surgeon. A quick read that is just twisted enough to give readers the shivers.

The Doctor is Jennifer Bull's debut novel and it shows a lot of promise. The story starts with our three main characters in three completely different situations. Daniel is visiting his father's Amusement park with his friends but something seems to be wrong there. Jack is a detective of the supernatural, in his latest case, hunting the most recent victim of The Doctor, a man that turns normal (or paranormal) people into killer werewolves. And finally, there's Sarah, a girl locked in a cage, living inside the nightmare her father has created, trying to escape only to find out that it was all a game her twisted father played on her. These three lives will collide and all of them will try to find and stop The Doctor while struggling to remain sane and alive.

I really enjoyed the first couple of chapters for each character. They were really creepy and it made me think that the story would be like a horror movie, but after a few chapters the creepy factor got lower and the mystery of The Doctor came to life. I really enjoyed that part, especially at the very end. For me there were two moments of WTF just happened, and I saw the first one coming, but the second one was a huge surprise.

The character and storyline I enjoyed the most was Jack. He is a paranormal detective and has a great and hilarious partner. I just loved the whole paranormal society and would love to see more of it. Maybe in a book just about Jack and another one of his cases, now that would be something I'd love to read.

This is the perfect read for Halloween, it even takes place during that time. So if you are in the mood for something a bit creepy and quite mysterious, get ready for the chase of The Doctor.

*This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.*

The opening scene of "The Doctor" takes us through a typical teenage horror movie troupe. A group of teens visit an amusement park - at night - on Halloween. Something bad happens...of course. But then the story takes an interesting turn and introduces Jack, Paranormal Investigator, and becomes an amalgam of X-files meets M. Night Shyamalan - without the fixation on the color red.

Okay, I admit it, I chose to read this book because I miss Doctor Who, and anything that reminds me of the show gets a longing sigh from me. Additionally, I'm a Stephen King fan, so picking up a thriller/horror novel was right up my alley. I was not disappointed. Creepy but clean--not a lot of blood, but lots of mind twisting, psychologically bent suspense. The novel is ideal for Older YA, 14+ readers, and adults who don't want a lot of graphic gore or sex with their violence.

Going into reading this book I was not expecting much because I got it for free for my Kindle. I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I loved the three different perspectives/stories that wove together into one. It also filled my need for a good supernatural type book for Halloween!

Great take on telepathy

The idea behind this book is wonderful and amazing. As a concept I was very impressed by the fact that the story is written in such a way that you find yourself in so many different places in so many different and wonderful ways.

I found the story fun to read and easy to understand if not so easy to follow though one of the choices was a little predictable, well at least I thought so, but it didn't hurt the whole of the story in the slightest.

I really want more.

This book started off pretty good. I have been looking for some "scary" stories to read to get into the Halloween spirit (I love scary stories, but it is hard to find good ones). I thought yes! This is going to be so good. I loved the first chapters of Daniel's story, turning into a wolf and having no control over that was great. I loved reading it as he was just locked in his head and couldn't really do anything about it, much different from most werewolf stories. I liked Sarah's first chapters and felt so bad for her. She is locked away on an island with the Doctor and he just uses her to play his games every day. I can't imagine trying to escape every day and every day getting caught and locked back up. What will you must have to live to keep doing that. It was a great second storyline.

Then I got to Jack and...well I didn't like his storyline. Something about his story felt cheesy and just not as good as the other ones. I thought maybe it would get better as I went along. It didn't. If anything it got worse.

*Note some spoilers will follow as I can't not talk about the things I really disliked about this story*

I was okay with everything until Jack and Daniel meet up for the first time and Jack told him the wolf was just in his head. The Doctor planted the thought in his head so well that his body actually turned into a wolf because of his mind. I hated that. It was so lame! I don't know why. I was talking to my husband about this and ranting about how lame it was and saying if this had been set in a different world than okay, but in our world now someone makes you think you are a wolf so you are a wolf? No. I can accept the telepaths, people moving things with their minds and reading minds, I can accept people who were bit by a werewolf get the werewolf whatever in them and then they turn into werewolves, or maybe it is a virus or something. All of that I can go along with so it seems silly that I dry the line at changing your physical appearance with your mind, but for some reason it was a major turn off for me. So the rest of the book was just...not good. If you like that whole mind over matter, the mind can trap you somewhere and whatnot then this story will probably work for you. For me it was just like really? That is the best you could do?

Then the end. Well Jack and Daniel and Sarah are all trapped on the island. Even though it is all from the Doctors mind. So why can't they get out of there like Daniel could get rid of the wolf in his head? If it is all mind controlling it why can't they do something about it? The Doctor is too strong...then the twist at the end...not good. By that point I just thought why am I even bothering to read this? Everything tied up so nice and quickly and was just too easy to get everyone straightened out.

I had high hopes for this book based on the first few chapters. They were quickly dashed and just kept going downhill for me. Not the worst book I have ever read, but there was a lot of eye rolling and yelling at the book while reading it.

So first off let me say that YES, this book jumps between 4 characters but it DOES not switch them off mid-chapter like some books do. At the start of every chapter it lists the characters name so you know whose viewpoint you're reading from. Your 4 main characters are Daniel, Jack, Tez & Sarah. Well, you don't read through Tez's viewpoint, but I still consider him a main character.

This book is about a crazy psychopath that does experiments on people that turn them into Werewolves. These aren't your typical "full moon" Werewolves.. These ones can change depending upon what's going on. It doesn't explain what happened to make the others change, but Daniel apparently changes when he's scared/mad.

Daniel's father knows what he is & apparently rarely lets him do anything. But for once, he let Daniel go to their amusement park (father owns it) at night on Halloween with a few friends. Everything is going great until Daniel & Beth get scared on a ride.. Once they finally get off, Daniel is so scared & angry that he starts to change & yells at his friends to run.

Sarah is a girl trapped in a house full of confusing corridors on a supposed island. Her father kept her & her mother locked up in a cell until one day he took her mother away & Sarah never saw her again. Sarah's father likes to play "games" with her.. He lets her have a chance at escaping but ALWAYS catches her. He lets her think she might have a chance at getting free only to drag her back into her cell to await another time.

Jack & Tez are paranormal detectives, AKA P.A.D.S (paranormal agency's detective service). They show up at a "paranormal" scene before anyone else to get things under control before the "serva" (what they call non-paranormals) arrive. Jack can read minds and can also see and manipulate memories of people. Tez is a telekinetic; can control things with his mind.

Jack lost his mother when he was 7. She just suddenly vanished into thin air. His father went crazy soon after. Jack went to live with his aunt & his father also suddenly vanished. Jack is determined to find & catch the man he refers to as "The Doctor". A few months go by without any more werewolves popping up, until Jack finds out about Daniel & what happened at the amusement park.

Can Daniel control his inner-wolf? Can Jack catch The Doctor? Can Sarah finally be free? You'll have to read the book to find out!

Book Review- The Doctor by Jennifer Bull

In this paranormal story three separate characters are drawn together to stop a serial killer known as the Doctor. Daniel is a young man with a secret. He turns into a werewolf when he loses control. He almost kills his friends on Halloween night when the werewolf comes out to play.
Jack is a paranormal investigator. He has been working diligently trying to find and stop the Doctor. He has had to clean up after too many crimes caused by the Doctor. He is borderline obsessed with finding him.
Sarah is trapped and tormented by her father. He keeps her locked away and plays games with her trying to break her. He allows her the chance to escape only to catch her again. She remains his prisoner.
All three characters come together when Jack realizes where the Doctor is. He and Daniel head to the old house. Once they enter they are transferred to an island full of mist. Let the games begin. The Doctor knows they are there. He uses Sarah to manipulate Jack and Daniel.
Jack and Sarah figure out who the Doctor is and the secret is shocking. The Doctor’s abilities are impressively strong. They only have one chance to defeat him.

I am a big fan of paranormal storylines. Daniel’s story was my favorite and I wanted him to overcome the werewolf and learn to control it. Being cursed with a werewolf with no control was devastating to him and the reader roots for him. Sarah’s character is a true victim and you witness her torment. You want her to escape and feel her frustration when she is caught again.
The story gets confusing once the Doctor is found and it’s revealed how he is doing everything. There were places in the story I had a difficult time picturing the scenes in my head. I didn’t have a connection. The ending was surprising and almost too confusing. It was okay. I give it a 3 out of 5.

It starts with a group of kids going to an amusement park, after hours, to celebrate halloween!! The park belongs to Daniel's dad (one if the kids in the group) but Daniel has a dark and scary secret ....

I'm introduced to a few characters in chapter form which I enjoyed because I formed my mental picture of each one and their scenario which made the read more real, scarier and the thrill so much more fun!

As chapter 1 progresses I'm reminded why I don't like amusement parks, I had shivers up my spine! The author's words/descriptions were really 'visual' and with an imagination like mine, well put it this way I left the bathroom light on and no I'm not afraid to admit it!

Sarah's story was frightening and had me looking for a soft toy to cuddle when farmer brown aka the hubby wasn't close ! I felt her anxiety, fear and frustration, all the time.

Jack, he's a part of P.A.D.S. , which if I had to compare it, it would be like a paranormal FBI introduces us to servas which are non paranormals . Now Jack and his team are responsible for removing any paranormal evidence and tracking the criminals that non paranormals would never find.

Finally, the boy with the dark and scary secret Daniel, I feel both scared and sorry for him but I can't divulge to much as it'll become a spoiler!

So I kept following the story through the eyes of each character to discover who and what the doctor is.Really enjoyed thus scary train!

The story kept me "captive" and wearing my big girl panties, nope, still not ashamed to admit it!

This book had a very promising start...it was dark, mysterious and while reading you would try to join the dots, especially how the 3 story lines and POV's would intersect.
There were aspects of the story that I really enjoyed, the werewolves, the detective paranormal agency and a woman held captive by a sadistic and cruel man. And to a point, each "voice" made sense and made me interested in the story, even to the point to disregard some parts that annoyed me like
The thing that put me down in this story was the big twist, that fell flat imo. I expected a lot more, from The Doctor and from our heroes, soI couldn't help and feel a bit disappointed.

I found this book on my Kindle and have no idea when I got it, so while my Libby books were still hold I gave it a read.

It's ok. It reads like the first part of a series, not a standalone, to me. It has decent, unexpected twists. The main reveal at the end irked me as it came completely out of left field. It felt more like a 'gotcha' moment than an actual, organic plot point.

I did enjoy the character building and thought each character had their own distinct voice. The plot was intriguing and despite juggling multiple POVs, settings, and storylines, the overall story was cohesive. It came together in the end and, though I was not fully satisfied, it did tie up a few loose ends. I may read more by this author someday, just to see how she develops as a writer/storyteller.

This is a very different YA thriller with three separate characters coming together in a fast paced suspenseful paranormal plot. The psychological aspect is really original, there is a big twist and a neat ending. Refreshing for a YA book to have so little romance but plenty of action and suspense without it being graphic. A really unusual book, I loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting and suspenseful. As the parallel story lines merged, I through I had figured out how the characters were related. I was wrong. Nothing in this was predictable. I also enjoyed the fact that the author stayed true to her British roots, and didn't try to "Americanize" the text. Excellent book!

I abandoned this one about half way through. It isn't badly written, and I enjoyed the first few chapters, but it fell apart when the characters came together. I think this would have been more successful as four separate books.

The Doctor started off strong for me. But then towards the middle until the end it dragged. I was so happy to finally be finished with this story.
