Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, I have always been intrigued by the history of the city and the south. New Orleans is unique, there is no other place like it and once you’ve lived there, you can never forget the sights, sounds and smells of the city. I am also intrigued by other countries, especially Ireland and England, probably because my ancestors were born there. So, I feel it is only natural that I have combined my love of history, New Orleans, and the British Isles in many of my novels.

EMERALD DESIRE was my first novel, published in 1985, and begins in Ireland and sweeps the reader to the French Colonial city of New Orleans. That was the first book in the Emerald Trilogy, followed by EMERALD ENCHANTMENT and EMERALD ECSTASY. Eight more books followed. I am pleased that ereads.com will eventually publish my backlist of books. At the present time EMERALD DESIRE, EMERALD ENCHANTMENT and PIRATE’S BRIDE are available on Amazon Kindle.

After checking out the the brief book description, I was looking forward to reading this book. About 1/3 of the way into the book, I knew it wasn't my type of book but decided to go ahead and finish it so I could write a review.

Background: Dera Brennan's mother was a beautiful girl who left Ireland to go to England when she was a young woman and eventually became the mistress of an English aristocrat. She wasn't particularly nice to Dera and when Dera asked who her father was, her mother told her she didn't know and that Dera was a bastard. When her aristocrat quit supporting her, she felt that having a young daughter was a hindrance to her future plans so she sent Dera to live with her Uncle Timothy in Ireland. Uncle Timothy was the overseer of the property owned by Lord Avery Fairfax. Although Uncle Timothy and his wife, Lydia weren't cruel to Dera, they weren't exactly the picture of a loving family either. Eventually Dera becomes her uncle's assistant and takes care of the rent ledgers of Lord Fairfax's tenants.

Irishman Quint Flannery's family home had been taken away from his family when he was a boy because they were Roman Catholics. His family's property was given to Lord Avery Fairfax and the Flannerys were now tenants on the property they used to own. One day Dera discovered that the Flannery family's rent wasn't being paid and her uncle explained that the father of the home had died and that his son, Quint, now lives in the cottage with his mother.

Being a compassionate girl, Dera decides to visit the Flannery home and check out their situation. She is somewhat taken aback when the handsome Quint answers the door. There is a spark between them and his mother, who apparently has been gifted with the "sight" tells Quint that Dera is "the one." When Dera asks Quint was his mother means, he explains that his mother means that Dera is the one he will marry. However, Dera is still very young so Quint tells her that they will wait for a few years and then they will be together.

*******Huge Spoilers******* Time goes by and eventually Quint and Dera do get together and become intimate, however, Quint always puts Dera off about marriage. He is part of an Irish rebel faction who take their vengeance out on the English intruders by burning the homes of the English aristocrats who have been given the properties formerly belonging to the Irish. From here on out the story goes completely downhill.

#1 - Although Quint confesses love for Dera and has intimate relations with her, he beds another young woman on the side on a regular basis.

#2 - Dera is so beautiful that she gets the attention of Lord Avery Fairfax who wants to marry her. Because she is being pressured to marry Fairfax by her Uncle Timothy and his wife, Lydia, Dera goes to Quint to tell him they must get married so she won't have to marry Fairfax. When she arrives at Quint's cottage, she hears sounds and yes, you've got it, he is having sex with his "other woman" and Lydia hears Quint speak words of love to the other woman.

#3 - Hurt and angry, Dera marries Lord Fairfax. Quint works in the stable at Lord Fairfax's home. When he tries to get Dera to tell him why she married Fairfax, Dera won't tell him the true reason. Fairfax is unable to consummate the marriage and alternates between kindness and abusiveness to Dera for the few years that she is married to him.

#4 - Eventually Dera and Quint do get together even while she is still married to Fairfax and she explains why she married Lord Fairfax. Quint tries to explain his relationship with the other woman as being only physical and tells Dera he has sent her away. However, Quint continues burning homes and eventually is arrested and sentenced to hang. Quint's evil friend, Jem, approaches Dera and tells her he can get Quint out of jail but she has to do a favor for him - yes, you guessed it - the favor is sexual favors for Jem, which she agrees to and Quint does escape from prison. Because Quint knows that Dera knew about the rebels' hiding place and what they were doing, he believes she is the one who betrayed him. However, he knows nothing of the price Dera paid for his freedom.

#5 - Shortly after Quint escapes from prison, Lord Fairfax is murdered. By now Dera is also pregnant with Quint's child but Quint has left for places unknown to get away from the warrant of death hanging over his head. A kind friend of Dera's, Dominick, asks her to marry him and go to live with him in his home in New Orleans. Eventually Dera agrees thinking she will never see Quint again.

#6 - After a few years in New Orleans, Dera sees Quint, who is part of a group of Irishmen who now work for the French government, keeping peace in New Orleans. They acknowledge one another but although Quint and Dera know in their hearts they still love each other, he is still angry and she doesn't want to betray Dominick who she respects and honors. In the meantime, her teen-age sister-in-law, Rosette, who is man crazy, falls for Quint and visits him at his office which has a cot and yes, you guessed it, Quint locks the door and relations ensue.

So, at this point, for this reader, no matter if Quint and Dera get together, this book has not made me "happy, happy, happy." In fact this is the kind of story line I do not like at all. Confusion and unrequited love throughout the entire book! The H/h are never on the same page long enough to get together in the way it matters at the right time - too many other factors entering in. But the primary issue I have is that Quint declared his love for Dera over and over again but come on - you're going to have sex with her 17 year old sister-in-law??? As is the manner in most of this genre, in the last few pages all is resolved - but it is too late for this reader! How can all be resolved with this stupidity?

Thankfully, I read fast, this book only took up a couple of hours on this book. If my review will help anyone who feels the way I do about this type of story line where the "Hero" of the story can't keep his trousers buttoned and the "Heroine" is always marrying someone other than the man she loves, then at least I have accomplished something with the time it has taken to write this review.

Thank goodness this is over. The main characters of this book are the most annoying, selfish, unlikeable characters of any book I've ever read...and that's saying something.

BLURB: As wild and beautiful as the Irish countryside, Dera Brennan gives herself to the Irish rebel leader, Quint Flannery, with delirious abandon. But Quint is not one to be tied down by the shackles of love.

To spite her faithless lover, Dera impulsively marries the haughty and imperious Lord Avery Fairfax, Quint's notorious enemy. Yet even after Avery is murdered and Quint is suspected of the heinous deed, Dera's heart yearns again for the love and passion she shared with Quint.

Can old hurts be forgiven and forgotten in time for Quint and Dera to reclaim their emerald desire?

Dera's only attribute is her beauty. In fact, that's all anyone can talk about is how beautiful she is. She has men falling all over her, but yet her heart only has room for Quint Flannery. Quint is pretty much an Irish version of Gaston, but with more sexual abandon. I cannot stand this man, and the only thing Dera really ever says to him is how gorgeous he is.

So I was cheering when Dera finds him playing "hide the pickle" with Peg. Dera then decides to marry Lord Fairfax, a marriage of convenience, only to find out that Fairfax is impotent. I really thought we were going to get this amazing character arc in which Dera loves him enough to "fix" him and fall madly in love with him. But no, instead he turns into an awful drunkard who abuses her. And all the while, we have to hear how much Dera still pines for Quint. Woman, get a life!!!!

Quint, an Irish rebel, is thought to have killed Lord Fairfax and goes on the run, leaving a widowed and pregnant Dera, who again marries for convenience, this time to Monsieur Dominick Saucier, another man besotted with her. But surprise, surprise, she is still in love with Quint, who now believes she ratted him out to the English and caused him to be captured. Dera moves to New Orleans to live with Saucier and raise the son that is Quint's as if he is Saucier's.

Just when you think all will be well, Quint shows up, now a Colonel in the Spanish Army who at this time have taken control of New Orleans from the French. But there is another wrench, Rosette, Dominick's sister, is in love with Quint. (Seriously, what is it with this guy? He's a jerk.) Rosette conspires, Quint wavers, and Dera is kidnapped.

The only, ONLY, people I liked were Anna, Dera's lady's maid, and Henri, Dominick's driver (and they of course got married). They were the only sensible people in this whole book and I would have much rather read an entire book about them than the idiots this novel is actually about. They were literally the only saving grace of this book.

Tropes I hated: stupidest love-at-first-sight-trope, heroine pining for jerk, no one can be prettier or nicer or better than the heroine

Overall, I do not recommend this book, but maybe it just wasn't for me. The whole will-they, won't-they was so overdone and Quint is not a good guy, and Dera is not a nice woman and uses the people around her. I wanted to like this book, but no.

I am sorry for the following review, but I need to be honest.
I. Hated. This. Book.
The writing was wonderful; the story was horrifying.
Throughout the entire novel, Dera was objectified because of her beauty. Nearly every man in the story acted like he had a right to touch her. She was slut-shamed. She was abused and assaulted. She was raped. She was accused of being "a tease" and seducing the men with her looks, when she was simply being a person. But were any of THESE issues addressed? No. Instead, we got a book about how Dera fell for a man who repeatedly cheated on her and mentally abused her, and how she remained loyal to him.
Ugh, the lack of feminism is this book made me sick.

I'm not a fan of historical fiction, but the plot seemed promising. Or so I thought. I can't help but detest how the lady protagonist was objectified, and why she can't get over her abusive, cheating ex.

Good thing I didn't pay for this book. I got this free from the Kindle store.

Set in Ireland Dera is brought up by her Aunt and Uncle and falls in love with a local man Quint. What she does not realize is he is behind all the property burning in the village. His constant avoidance of marriage makes her question his sincerity and when she finds him with another woman, she agrees to accept a proposal from Lord Fairfax. Her marriage to him is not the luxury and security she had hoped for and when a neighbour’s residence is burned down he offers them shelter only to be consumed with jealousy.

Dera’s second marriage is to Dominic who takes her to live in New Orleans with his sister Rossette. Again we3 have another revolutionary who wants to keep New Orleans French and away from the Spanish invasion. This is not possible as the French abandoned the colony due to the cost. They have hired men to help defend the land and amongst them is Quint.

When her second husband dies she finally gets to marry Quint, but she seems to have learnt little from her previous marriage or developed any character. Lord Fairfax is perhaps the most interesting character as he has all the wealth but none of the health of a younger man. This makes him insanely jealous and eventually violent, a deterioration which loses reader sympathy. Quint’s idealism is more petty spite for the injustice he perceives he has suffered.

This novel lurches from one disaster to another without any real sense of historical time or character development. Perhaps a romantic relationship is enough to sustain it, but it does not make it memorable or distinctive.

This is what I call a romance without the romance. With the exception of great sex, Dera is absolutely miserable for the entire book and all because of Quint. He cheats on her, he belittles her, he abandons her, he jumps to conclusions and never gives her a chance to explain. The whole time I was wondering, "Why, girl? Why this fool?"

Intriguing historical romance

What a twist on romance! Wonderful story with many surprises. The characters are humanly lovable and are well developed and very interesting. This is a book that warms your heart as you are pulled into the battlefield of young love that grows ever stronger with each battle that transpires, with neither side able to claim a victory. Love is a powerful emotion, and this book is a powerful acknowledgement of raw love.

The Irish inn New Orleans

The story starts in Ireland and ends up inn New Orleans. It was a little hard to get into but after the first few chapters I couldn't put it down. It's well written and easy to read, well worth the effort to read.

Passionate romance

It is interesting to read th e story as it unfolds. There are a few grammatical errors, but they did not detract from the story. One of the characters was inconsistent, but aren't real people inconsistent sometimes? It made me look forward to my nightly reading time.

Was better than expected.3 1/2 stars

so it was ok.Didn't really know what to expect with this book. Never heard of the author or the series. The story was told well and it moved at a steady pace .No drawn out dramatics which was refreshing.

I had a hard time liking Dera .She was very submissive through out the whole book. She goes through many trials that mature her and while I don't agree with most of the decisions she made she never faltered when it came to protecting or helping the ones she loves.

Quint was an interesting character to get to know. He believed in what he was doing throughout the book and even though he does some things that are mean he still stays true to him loving her and proves himself worthy I guess to me in the end.
While I think this story was good a lot of Drea and Quints problems were lack of communication and even when the truth comes out they resist each other out of mistrust.

All in all it was good for a free book .

Almost abandoned this book since the characters were so unlikable in the beginning, his behavior was fanatical and abhorrent, she was a pushover, everyone who surrounded them had some kind of a problem. And, there were 649 pages of this to dubuously look forward to. However, it picks up in Part II when Quint becomes more remorseful and less sociopathic, although another character picks up that particular trait with alacrity. What I did like about it was how imperfect their lives were - the grim reality which caused presence of violence, necessity to compromise principles, and face those imperfect early decisions as story developed. A promising author.

While I had high hopes in the beginning, there were so many quick changes in direction, I feel as though I have whiplash. There were so many times I had to back up and re-read just to keep up with the story line. It just did not flow well, and I had no idea where it would end up next. Very disappointing.

Rollercoaster Ride

I don't want to dislike Dera because I realize her character was naive and times were different it goodness gracious she slept with everyone! Intriguing storyline. Lots of ups and downs. I don't know that I can recommend because of all the infuriating I hate her, he hates me, I love her, I love him. Not a bad read but very emotionally draining.

Nope. Sexy romance? Maybe. The characters were VERY unlikeable. Great romance? No! Quint was a pig! He finds his true love and continues to sleep around with anything in a skirt. Please do not read this book.

DNF. Please, love story? Seriously? This author needs to look up what "love" means. Just because they make up in the last couple of pages doesn't make this a romance. Truth in advertising is important. Next.

This wasn't bad. I skipped over most of the love scenes because that's not my thing. I did get a little tired of all the obstacles they had to go thru to be together. Geesh.
