Between sitting on the edge of my seat as the Waverly siblings constantly threw themselves head-first into danger, and sniffling over the star-crossed beautiful disaster that is Ingrid & Luc's relationship, I was wholly engrossed in this thrilling sequel.
And that ending...oh that ending!
This ending brings new meaning to the word 'torture'. The author leads you along the 'home path' and you're thinking all is well in the world...until the ground opens up beneath you and you fall into a fiery chasm a.k.a the cliffhanger.
Did I mention how much I detest cliffhangers?!
But on the bright side, this book has plenty of mayhem, action, romance and drop-dead gorgeous gargoyles to keep you happy for 3/4 of the novel!
I love Luc. Just sayin'. The amount of effort it takes to write such a book needs to be recognized. The research would have made me dizzy. Page does such a good job with her mythology and her history, it's amazing! Can't wait to start book three!
Having loved The Beautiful and the Cursed, I was eager to get to The Lovely and the Lost. With how events tied up in the previous book, I couldn't wait to continue on with the characters and see where the story would take me. The Lovely and the Lost, was a fantastic sequel, one even stronger than the debut, in my opinion. By the end, I was hooked line and sinker into this series.
One of the most glaring parts of this sequel has to be the character development. Each and everyone of these characters has undergone a tremendous amount of growth from the previous installment and in The Lovely and the Lost, they continued to grow, becoming more confident in themselves. In the first book, I mentioned in my review that I had a fondness over Ingrid as a protagonist. That switched in The Lovely and the Lost when I found myself drifting more towards Gabby's character. The maturity and confidence that she has acquired over the course of the books was outstanding. I admired her so much for how she dealt with the aftermath of The Beautiful and the Cursed. Not only does she not sit around and wallow in grief over the loss of one of her biggest assets, she funnels it into something more positive instead, learning to get over the fact that she wasn't gifted like her siblings were. She has grown into a strong and confident young woman and I couldn't be prouder of her. Hers and Nolan's relationship continued to deepen and gave me the butterflies when they were together. Nolan could be a flirty rascal at times, but he had a heart made of gold and was incredibly supportive of Gabby and never stopped making her feel beautiful. That was one boy after my own heart!
Ingrid, too, continued to be a fantastic character, fighting to protect those she loved. Her relationship with Luc was very frayed in this one. It hurt my heart to see the two of them wanting to be together, but still not being able to because of gargoyle-humans relationships being forbidden. Her romance did turn a bit triangley, but it weirdly didn't bother me as much because Ingrid did favor Luc, no matter what, and she did repeatedly state that. Still, I would have been happier if she hadn't developed any feelings for Vander in the first place. All in all, the romances really hurt (in a good way)! In The Lovely and the Lost we also get the POV of Grayson, who surprised me because of how much I ended up liking him. He was also dealing with his curse and slowly coming to terms with it. I felt like everything about The Lovely and the Lost heightened, including the plot. It was a lot more exciting than the first book and set up the stage for the final battle in book 3. I also loved how the author expanded on her world building. We learn more about the angels, the Order and the Alliance. The paranormal and historical parts of the book fused beautifully together once again. I especially loved how much darker and gothic The Lovely and the Lost got.
The Lovely and the Lost was a great sequel, building up on the first book, with some amazing character and plot development. This series is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA series. Page Morgan is a talented author and if you haven't read this series, definitely give it a shot.
An outstanding sequel, and dare I say better than the first book. Morgan does a fantastic job of refreshing our memories before delving into the story, which is something every reader appreciates. I loved encountering the various demons, and romance sizzles between characters at every turn. If you love Cassandra Clare's storytelling, you'll love Page Morgan's THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED series. This book is dark, passionate, thrilling, and it's set in historic Paris. In other words, it's perfect. Congrats, Page Morgan, on another brilliant addition to the series!
THE LOVELY AND THE LOST was a bombshell of a sequel!! Filled with everything imaginable, it made for a epic adventure that I absolutely loved exploring! Page Morgan steps her game up in this thrilling second installment, that had my heart-racing, hands-shaking, and fingers turning the pages faster then I could read them in awe and anticipation. Everything is more intense, more raw, more dangerous, and more suspenseful as ever, as the Waverly's explore their otherworldly gifts, their demon hunting talents, and face-off against the evil hunting them!!
The writing yet again was breathtaking... Truly heart-pounding and suspenseful from beginning to end!! The audiobook is DEFINITELY the way to go for this sequel, as the narrator Mary Jane Wells amply's Morgan's gifts of storytelling, and blows your audio app alive!!
The characters once again were fantastic. Every single one of them were developed and had their own distinct voice that separated them from each other. I loved them all for their own special reasons. They had such growth, yet were still learning about themselves and the world around them. And it was such an adventure watching it all unfold as they got stronger, wiser, and more prepared to battle the evil hunting them.
THE PLOT...
~ INGRID ~
In the short time since arriving in Paris, Ingrid's life has change drastically. Switching from her glittering gowns and ballroom parities, to taking up learning how to conjure lightening at will, and directing it from her finger tips. Oh, and slaying a demon or two while running from the fallen angle/demon Axia, and her plot to overtake the Angelic Order with her angel blood she stored within Ingrid's blood when she was a baby.
But Axia and her demon lackeys are not the only ones hunting Ingrid, their are others, humans who want her blood just as bad, if not more, and are determined to go to any length necessary to get it. But Ingrid's protector gargoyle Luc, would rather die then let that happen to her. And then theirs the hardest obstacle of all, the forbidden affection she feels for her protector gargoyle, and the serve punishment of death that follows if ever discovered it was acted upon. But with each passing day, Ingrid's love only grows stronger, but what hurts most of all, she's not even sure he feels the same way anymore, if ever...
~ GABBY ~
After attacked by a hellhound, Gabby is left forever scarred. Feeling self-conscious about her appearance, Gabby goes to great length to coverup her ruined face, especially from the love of her life, Nolan Quinn. Though Nolan doesn't seem to notice or even care about her scars, or what they look like. But their are others who think her scars are hideous, that they should be covered and surgically removed. But that is something Gabby is unsure of, even if she does hate those wretch marks raking down the side of her face. They are hers, and proof that she survived, that she is strong enough to become a demon hunter, that she can overcome anything short of death...
But nevertheless, scars aside, Gabby has never felt more alive since arriving in Paris and secretly taking up her calling on demon hunting. She loves it more then anything she's ever experienced, and wants to become a true member of the Alliance, a secret demon fighting organization that rids the streets of demons. But the Alliance has other plans for Gabby, plans that she is not ready to face, plans that she is determined not to fulfill...
~ GRAYSON ~
Now back home with his family in Paris, and fully exposed of what he truly is, Grayson battles his inner-demons day-in and day-out, and rivals with his thirst for the one thing he despises most, blood, and the urge to shift into what he truly is, a hellhound...
But when his father makes a surprise visit to Paris, and shuns him as he always does, demanding he stay away from "his" family, Grayson can't help but to want to give in and give up. But just when all seems to be lost, Grayson runs into something unexpected that may be worth fighting for, or should I say, someone worth fighting for...
I LOVED just about everything from this sequel. The romance, the action, the evened out pace, the paranormal aspects, the experimental side, the evil villains, ALL OF IT!! It was just the second installment I was hoping for and some!!
Overall, THE LOVELY AND THE LOST was truly breathtaking, enchanting me from the very first page, and leaving me yearning for the explosive finale that was sure to come. I really can't name anything that I found lacking, I loved just about everything in this thrilling sequel!! I would HIGHLY recommend this complete series to ANY paranormal/fantasy fan out there, I don't think you'll be disappointed!! Trust me, THE LOVELY AND THE LOST is one sequel you don't want to miss!!
NOTE: I received a physical ARC from Delacorte Press for reviewing purposes! All opinions express are my own and are not influenced in any way!
This book killed me! I was still in love from the first book and this one made me fall even harder. Every character has something amazing about them and that makes then unique and it all shines through.
Ingrid is in love with Luc. Amazing gargoyle, protector, independent , fierce, loyal Luc. But he starts to pull away. Ingrid knows why, but she can't stand being hurt and rejected. Then there is Vander bookworm, loyal, human also in love with Ingrid. He can love openly but doesn't mean he is the right choice. In this next book the Waverlys again are up against and evil they don't understand. Everyone/thing wants something from them.
Gabby wants to learn to fight, to protect herself and the ones she loves, to be an equal to Nolan. She has hideous scars that just prove she needs to learn. Bent at what cost? She is stubborn and independent and once she puts her mind to something she goes after it. She doesn't always think of others Helen she runs off to do just that, she does and then regrets it. Gabby is her own person. And by that will start a war on accident.
Grayson is a hellhound. There is no avoiding it, he will fight it with every breath. He never wants to hurt his sisters again, he is willing to try and do anything he can to protect the ones he loves. But when he starts thinking he can control other hell hounds will it all work out or blow up in his face?
The only people I truly dislike are obviously the evil ones but the Angels. They are horrible, I know it is best to see all sides but how can they justify doing this to gargoyles, yes they all messed up but when is redemption coming for them? It kills me every single time Irindi comes for Luc and the others to hand down punishment.
Each Waverly is going through some pretty tough stuff, and they each have their own path cut out for them but they're willing to fight for what they want. They will each lose something dearly in this book and it just breaks my heart.i can't wait to see what happens next!!!
Quick & Dirty: Full of heart pounding action, epic romance, and one of the best cast of characters I have ever met. It’s just one of those stories you can’t get enough of and when you are finished you are left wanting so much more. This is one of my all time favorite series ever!!!
Opening Sentence: The quiet ached.
The Review:
All the Waverly’s survived their recent run in with the evil fallen angel Axia. But just because they are no longer in immediate danger that doesn’t mean they are safe. The city of Paris has many other dangers besides demons, and the Waverly’s have more enemies then they thought possible. The Dispossessed will do anything to protect their humans, but there are some things even they can’t stop. The Waverly’s are going to have to learn how to harness their own powers if they expect to survive the attacks coming their way.
Ingrid Waverly couldn’t be happier that her family is finally back together but things have changed. She has just recently learned that she is part demon and she has the power to control electricity. The only problem is her power is very sporadic and she has to learn to control it or it will never be of any use to her. There are a lot of people that want to use Ingrid for her powers and not all of them want to use them for the right reasons. Ingrid is such an amazing heroine. She has a very tender and sweet spirit, but she also has a feisty side. She doesn’t like being told what to do and while she doesn’t deny help from others she does prefer to take care of herself. Watching her struggle and grow really helped me to connect with her on an even deeper level than before. I loved her in the first book and that love just grew substantially in this book.
Gabby Waverly was left with some pretty severe scars from her last run in with demons, but she is lucky that is all she got. She felt so helpless against the demons. Now she wants more than anything to train to be a demon hunter for the Alliance so she will never be in that situation again. I love everything about Gabby. She is strong and resilient even though most people in her situation would just cower and hide. She knows that she is pretty worthless when it comes to a fight so she decides to do something about it even though it’s not very lady like. She is just one of those characters you can’t help but love and admire. While I love the entire cast of characters in this story I think Gabby is my favorite.
Grayson Waverly’s life has really gone downhill in the last year. He was kidnapped and found out that he has the blood of a Hellhound demon. He has done some terrible things in the last year and he is ridden with guilt because of it. He also craves blood and the temptation to resist shifting just keeps getting more and more difficult. He knows that he is dangerous, but he’s not sure if he will be able to control himself or his urges. You get to know so much more about Grayson’s past which really helped me to understand him better. He is scared of who he has become but he has to learn to accept it. I could really sympathize with Grayson and I felt that while all of the Waverly’s are in a dire situation I think Grayson is the worst off. I admire him for being strong and not giving up.
Luc has the unfortunate job of being the Waverly’s gargoyle. He is in charge of keeping all of them safe and it is not an easy task. Every time one of them is hurt or injured Luc is punished for it. Then there is the problem of what he feels for one of his humans. A relationship between a gargoyle and human is strictly forbidden and Luc has already been warned, but he can’t help the way he feels. I didn’t think it was possible for me to fall more in love with Luc, but I totally did. He is fiercely protective of his human charges and it’s not just because he has to be it’s because he wants to be. I admire how loyal and dedicated he is. He is also totally hot and I get butterflies just thinking about him. He has quickly become one of my favorite book boys.
There is only one word I can use to describe this book: perfection. I can’t even put into words how much I love this story and everything in it. It is set in gothic Paris which gives the book a very raw and unique vibe. The characters are phenomenally done and it’s hard to put into words how much I love each of them. The story is told from multiple POV’s, which generally is not my favorite because I always tend to like one character more than the rest, but that is so not the case in this series. Morgan does a fantastic job making you care for each and every character. They all have their own story to tell, but each one is just as interesting as the next. I also find this format to be confusing in a lot of other books because you are never quite sure whose head you are in, but that was never a problem in this story. Each character has such a distinct voice I could always tell which character was the narrator at any given time. This is a sequel and the first book in this series was one of my favorite reads of last year so I had some pretty big expectations with this story and it completely delivered. From the first page, I got sucked back into the wonderful world that Morgan created and I pretty much couldn’t put it down. The plot is action packed and full of surprises that keeps the suspense running high throughout the whole story. There is great romance for each individual character, tons of drama, and great world building. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it left me with a horrible book hangover. The ending was pretty brutal and I don’t know how I am going to survive a whole year waiting for the final book. This is one of my all time favorite paranormal books and the best book I have read this year so far. I would highly recommend this series to anyone that is a young adult fan, it is so worth the read!
Notable Scene:
The hansom drew to a stop, the brake lever was thrown, and the carriage door opened. Luc and Gabby waited as the set of steps crashed down. A pair of polished oxblood boots appeared on the first step, and then the visitor himself filled the frame of the door.
Gabby gasped. Then let out a high, tinny moan.
“Who is it?” Luc asked as the man, tall and broad-shouldered and wearing what looked like an expensive greatcoat, stepped onto the snowy drive just in front of the rectory’s front door.
“Oh no,” Gabby whispered. “It’s Papa.”
FTC Advisory: Delacorte Press/Random House provided me with a copy of The Lovely and the Lost. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
I’m really enjoying this series. There’s a lot of POV’s in this one and a lot of conflicts/tensions/mysteries to jeep track of but i think the author does a good job of them. I dont like love triangles but this one works fine for me - i think because there’s a clear winner. Gabby has retained her badassness from the end of the previous book - i’m really interested in her journey in the third one. And the new lore revealed in this one only makes the story more interesting to me. Overall i think this is better than the first.
I read The Beautiful and the Cursed last year, and while I did enjoy it, it just wasn’t my favorite book. But The Lovely and the Lost? Oh my freaking God, I’m just in love with the series now. Or Luc. Or both. Let’s go with both so that no one claims I’m just reading because of Luc (Okay, fine, a lot of my love for this series has to do with him. But not only him. I promise.)Well, since I’m on Luc, let’s talk romance. Obviously, I’m a bit obsessed with one of Ingrid’s love interests here. He was sweet and protective and jealous and everything and I just fell even more in love with him than I had in the last book. While he tries to stay away from Ingrid, we all knew that wouldn’t happen. And how Ingrid affected him was just so…adorable, for lack of a better word.
And yes, there was a love triangle with Vander. I sometimes felt bat for Vander, what with Ingrid being so obviously in love with Luc, but I’m so absolutely Team Luc, it’s hard not to gloat. But Vander was also super sweet towards Ingrid, although Luc was more ruggedly sexy. Which sort of wins here. Gabby’s own romance isn’t so much paradise either. Complications arise (most which made my eyebrows shoot up), but it’s easy to see that Nolan loves Gabby desperately and dearly. Their romance was so cute and I sort of hate the way the story ended on that part.
Grayson gets his own romance in The Lovely and the Lost, and I just love it so much! I ship them. I don’t really want to say anything else, because spoilers, but it’s pretty easy to figure out once you start the book.Wow three characters’ love lives take up a lot of text.Onto the action part, there’s no lack of that here. There was always a fight scene or a possession or a demon just laying in wait for one of the Waverlys and while it wasn’t exactly fast paced, I loved the pacing and how nothing was rushed or slow. Twists were numerous and one concerning a certain gargoyle just shocked me to the core. And the ending? The freaking ending! Page Morgan knows how to break a reader’s heart and has a knack for cliffhangers apparently. Thanks a lot.I loved all the characters in The Lovely and the Lost, especially Ingrid with her strength and her less rash decisions than her sister. Gabby still irritated me a bit because she kept thinking she could fight and kept putting herself in harm’s way, not seeming to notice that if she got injured, Luc would too. We meet a lot of new characters in here, some of them friendly, most of them…not so friendly. It was hard to differentiate the two, leading to a lot of screaming and book-against-the-wall-ness.
The Lovely and the Lost is one of those books that breaks the Sequel Syndrome and makes you fall in love with the series all over again. The Gothic atmosphere is as gorgeous as it was before and with the worldbuilding Morgan creates, it’s impossible not to get sucked in to the world and story. Honestly, for anyone who loves Paranormal or Gothic Lit, The Dispossessed is one of my highest recommendations. Read it people. Read it.
It isn´t a question of what´s changed that I didn´t like the 2nd installment s much as the 1st. It isn´t about what I missed either. The feeling was there, still. The silent, sneaking creep and the permanent goose bumps. It somehow attached itself to the read and the brilliant writing nothing but adds up to a great read. Paris comes alive again with all its gargoyly and churchly beauty. Everything I loved about The Beautiful and the Cursed was still there, obviously.
Also, Grayson´s POV offered some insight and the sort of thoughts and feels you needed to know about to accept him as a member of the crew. Though I couldn´t fully understand him (he´s not the only one with demon blood, after all) and his tendency to act like the Soldier of Solitude (boy, people would actually help you if you only asked them to!) I can´t blame it all on him. I ddin´t get along with Ingrid´s behavior either. She may claim to help and support her brother with all her might, but she never really does anything. She doesn´t even speak with him about what´s happened! I thought they were the same person? Attached at the hip? One cannot simply loose this kind of connection, right?
Which brings me neatly to my next point, the main reason why I didn´t quite enjoy the 2nd part as much.
Firstly, I hoped for more Marco. Fortunately, my wish was granted. He suddenly appears in the main plot line. Unfortunately that happened towards the end and all I got was Marco flying, lying and staying around (mostly naked). Which wasn´t exactly what I hoped for at all.
Secondly, and most importantly: What the heck is it with this love triangle? We have Vander - a totally lovable and cool guy. You know Philip from Pirates of the Caribbean 4? Well, just add some humor and major skills with the crossbow - ta ta. Who wouldn´t like this guy? Plus, he´s crushing on Ingrid quite hard. Who in turn, as our second part of the LT doesn´t love him at all, confesses that to herself multiple times and still feels the need to kiss him (fully knowing how he feels and whom her heart belongs to, I might add) not only once, but twice. Congrats girl. That´s how it´s done. Not. Luc, on the other hand, said owner of her heart, kind of fails at keeping her away. Can´t blame him, actually, because at least he tried. But WTF Ingrid? I truly hated this story line. Also, I still don´t feel the sparks between Ingrid and Luc. Shouldn´t they light up the whole read? Rather they come across quite weird, especially since Ingrid´s fascination with scales and wings borders on obsession.
Although I totally liked the story, still love Gabby and her impulsiveness, Nolan and the Alliance and the general vibe of the whole plot, I couldn´t fully enjoy the read. The story was great and didn´t get boring, even though it lacked movement and progress at times. It simply does not need the absolutely unnecessary touch of whatever sort of romance this is supposed to be.
I have officially stopped breathing. My God. What a book.
Every single character Page Morgan has introduced into the mix, each have a purpose and that's to propel the plot forward. None of them are just dead space or an excuse to use up more pages. They are all beyond unique and riveting, from the powers they wield to their own personality and charm. And that is what makes an excellent and strong set of characters. With those characters come the infamous couples.
The first being Luc and Ingrid. Even after a wait of more than a year, their chemistry and love is still fresh and vibrant, literally jumping off the page at every turn. While they make an amazingly adorable couple, their relationship is the epitome of forbidden love. As much as they try, they simply can't be together (mostly because of stupid meddling angels). Yet I think that that hindrance between them makes it all the more heartfelt.
Then comes the budding romance between Chelle and Grayson. Chelle, a member of the Alliance and a formidable fighter of throwing stars and Grayson, a human with hellhound blood coursing through his veins. Two people who wouldn't normally seem to find their way to each other but end up doing so. They go together like bread and butter or peanut butter and jelly. They're just little fledglings learning how to fly together instead of separately and the way we get to see it come together is moving.
Finally, Gabby and Nolan, a relationship I thought would become a story on its own but instead didn't. I don't know if it's because they didn't get much focus in the story or it was simply because Nolan was short of vibrancy. I just felt that they were lacking in something fundamental in couples. Yes, there were moments when they would come together but I didn't feel the spark that was present in the previous book. It could be a transition to another couple, like Gabby and Rory but I honestly feel deep in my gut that it'll always be Gabby and Nolan.
But aside from characters that step out of the pages and demand the reader's attention, the story itself is meaty and full of promises. The third book is bound to be just as fast-paced and just as insistent to be read even if it's 3 in the morning. A worthwhile heart-wrenching, nail biting, sweat inducing read :)
And the cover is just lovely.
UPDATE:
20 freaking 14?! Are you serious?! I have to wait for 6 months or more?! THE WAIT WILL BE ANTAGONIZING!! *whimper in pain* Luc... Ingrid... Gabby... Grayson... Nolan... *sob*
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
8/23/13 WTF When did this cover happen?! I didn't know it was released! I like it though!
03/19/14: I was so excited about this after reading the first one. Just knowing that Luc and Ingrid's story was going to continue was enough to get me excited. Then while reading the book I was reminded of this wonderful world that Page Morgan has prepared. You all know how much I loved the world that The Beautiful and the Cursed was set in. And because this one was set in the same world I obviously loved it just as much. It was so great to be back in this world. This book would be nothing with out all the descriptions of Paris around this time. And it made the read so much better. But unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one as much as the first one. I just couldn't get as absorbed for some reason. I think it had a little to do with the fact that even though they were different, there was no recap of the first one. I didn't remember anything that happened, so I basically had to go and skim the first one. Just to try and remember what the characters were trying to get together. I also didn't like the fact that there was really nothing happening. It was basically just a bunch if fluff and fillers. There was no horse and buggy scenes like in the last one and it just wasn't as exciting. Until the end. Now if there is one thing that Morgan knows how to write, it's an ending. This one was filled with twists and turns and surprises just like the other one. It really made the book. Because as you saw in the last paragraph, I wasn't a huge fan of the middle. In this second installment to the Dispossessed series, I was a little upset. I was expecting to see a very intriguing story unfold as the gargoyles are saving people, but what I got was a classic case of the sophomore novel that could very easily serve as just a filler.
Well I swallowed this book up in a day and a half. I was dying to read it apparently o_o lol
The problem, Ingrid was coming to realize, was that there were no hard and fast rules when it came to evil. It could change shape. Be one thing one moment and something else the next. It could be demon. Gargoyle. Human. Angel. Ingrid wondered what evil would look like the next time it came knocking.
That quote really got me. How true it is! This book would've gotten 5 stars if it didn't change perspectives much because tbh, I could care less really about Ingrid's sister Gabby and even her twin, Grayson. I wanted to get to Ingrid and Luc. lol
There was a lot of action and romance in this book. I loved how brilliantly the author pulled it off. As if things weren't bad enough with the demented ex-angel Axia wanting her blood, Ingrid and the gang find out that the Alliance isn't what it seemed, and now there's a cult of demon loving people who want her blood too. Everyone's after the Waverley sisters, and it's a chaotic mess in Paris dealing with all the intrigue and monster-like demons and people. O_O
The romance between Luc and Ingrid was pretty heartbreaking at the end there. Angels are cruel too...sheesh, dumb Irindi. <___< PLEASE GIVE ME A HAPPY ENDING!!! *runs for the last book in the trilogy*
After the success of "The Beautiful and the Cursed" Page Morgan returns with a thrilling sequel fuul of mystery, action and betryal. Ingrid and her family try to move over the tragedy of the first book and heal their scars. On the other hand, Luc has to fight his feelings for Inrid as also deal with a new gargoyle, Hunters and the warth of the angels.
Told by multiple POVs we get a real picture of all the situations as also the characters' feelings. While the faint love triangle exists, it is overpowered by the actions of Gabby and Nolan, Garrison and Chelly.
All the while there is also a backstage action, which I hope it will be cleared at the third and final book "The Wondrous and the Wicked".
Until then I am going to re-read "The Beautiful and the Cursed"! :)
It feels so good to give a well-deserved 5 stars to this exceptional sequel. Page Morgan has proven herself, once again, in this action laced follow up. There isn't much to say, except, if you haven't read this series yet -- GO READ IT. Now. It's my favorite series, and gothic young adult is my new favorite genre.
It has just enough action, emotion, love, lust, hot guys, demons, and villains to keep you intrigued and flustered at the same time. My only critique is: that ending? Seriously? Why don't you just kill me! I'll be dying by the time the next book comes out! Ah, the suspense. (I tell you, Morgan has the makings of the next Kagawa with her endings!)
The cast of characters each have something to say and I am just falling for them all. It’s one of those series of books where all the characters both main and sub characters will have you wanting to switch pov’s to read more about where they are going in the story line, often.
I am admittedly, Team Luc and Team Nolan for the girls, but it’s so hard not to wish Vander could be in my team too. He tries so hard. He is such a nice lad.
Vander came to stand in front of her, his arms folded tightly across his chest. He locked her in the steady gaze he wore when he shifted from intellectual bookseller to deadly serious demon hunter.
“I promised you once, and I’ll promise you again now : I won’t let anything harm you, demon, human, or angel.”
Things come to light in this installment, a tangled web is weaved and there are some spiderman moments. No pun intended...well, maybe.
I want Grayson to get a girl, but there is all that dark shenanigans going on that are keeping all the lads in this series running about. Demons to take down, girls to rescue, kisses to steal, answers to be found.
Page really has something special here in YA paranormal. I see her dark world of gargoyles, demons and two sisters who are causing some unintentional trouble in Paris, so well. Not to forget poor Grayson and the card he was dealt.
This story starts off in February 1900, in Paris. What a great setting for this series.
How I love Luc, the forbidden love.
Luc.
His wavy dark hair, and the way he pushed it out of his eyes, which happened to be the brightest shade of green Ingrid had ever seen. His lashes, coal-black and thick. His expression of constant irritation. His creamy velvet skin as it checkered over into glimmering jet scales.
Vander could make a thousand promises to keep Ingrid safe, but it was Luc who was her true protector. It was Luc who could sense her every emotion as clearly as if it were his own, whether it was fear, excitement, or joy. It was Luc who knew where Ingrid was at any given moment, and who could be there within seconds should she require his help.
His character is quite selfless in his need to be spreading his wings thin by looking after his charges. If one of them gets hurt. He gets severely punished. I know it is his job, but there is a difference with his gargoyle self and some of the other gargoyles.
Some wonderful moments between Luc and Ingrid and that KISS!!! Here’s a little taste.
He kissed the heart of her hand.
“Luc.” It was the only coherent word revolving through her mind. There was nothing else, just Luc and his lips, and she knew that she wanted this. She wanted him to keep talking and touching her. She wanted Luc to kiss her the way he had before.
He let go of her hand, but she kept it against his cheek, willing the moment to stretch on.
“Is he courting you?” he asked, his voice hoarse, his eyes sooty malachite.
... Luc kissed her, stealing away the rest of her confession.
You got to read the book to find out about the rest of that smooch.
Speaking of kisses. The other lads were having their own moments.
And then he kissed her.
It wasn’t a soft kiss, either. He backed Gabby up against the column and pinned her there, his lips hard against hers. She opened her mouth and he stole inside with a husky groan of satisfaction. Gabby tried to free her arms, longing to wind them around his neck, run her fingers through his black curls. But he held them firmly at her side.
Her lips moved on instinct. Her eyes slowly fluttered shut. Vander’s arms wound around her and tucked her body against his. Ingrid’s hands, trapped between her chest and his, gathered up fistfuls of his soft tweed jacket. Their kiss broke off and Vander tilted his head to press his lips to the curve of her jaw. He tasted her skin, nuzzling the slope of her neck, his breath hot....
I highly recommend this series as it is written so well.
You really feel like you are in Paris at night time, facing off against a demon, watching Luc and Ingrid fight their forbidden love, then watching Ingrid with Vander as he tries to win over Ingrid.
Enter some new characters.
Who can be trusted?
Gabby is my fave out of the sisters. She is a young girl who is shaping up to be quite a laoch. I love watching her character evolve.
I love watching Nolan and Gabby together. Poor Gabby is trying so hard to do the right thing, but things are not going well for her.
Marco was my surprise. He is shaping up to be quite the character I love. I want Marco to get a hea, he is earning his stripes with me.
Grayson is pulling on my heart strings. He drew the shorter straw in the Waverley twins demon blood drama. Neither Ingrid nor Grayson can be held accountable for what happened to them, yet they bring misunderstanding and hatred towards themselves.
Nolan, Vander and Luc, understand that it isn’t their fault, but sometimes that isn’t enough.
Page gave us a real whammy with the ending to this installment. I am rather bouncy for # 3 to come along so I can see what is instore for certain characters.
Page has brought a dark, Victorian era, YA world to my reading nook which I find terribly hard to put down, once I start. She has the writing chops of Cassandra Clare.
I could so easily see this book series becoming a tv series or even a movie. I have read some gargoyle reads where you can forget the characters are gargoyles. Page won’t let you forget that Luc is a gargoyle. I love how he shares his time in both human form and gargoyle form throughout the story. Ingrid sees Luc through his eyes, no matter what form he is in. His eyes are the window to his soul, even though technically he isn't alive.
I love the emotion Page makes me feel with his character.
There is a stirring in the gargoyle clan and I am bouncy to find out more about it. I feel like book # 3 is going to be turning it all around on us.
I am getting that excited feeling like I do when I am waiting for a Cassandra Clare book. The wait is worth it. Even though I was lucky enough to read the first books close together in time.
On the cover there is Ingrid and Marco in a stone wolf. The plot is more anchored on the imposing demons that Gabby Constantine and the others are trying to hunt, on Leon they are looking for and on a certain Robert Dupuis who wants to recover the blood of Ingrid. Too bad that at the end Luc the gargoyle must change territory. Looking forward to reading more. The author has trained us in a supernatural world of demons and human gargoyles with brilliance.
The Lovely and the Lost is the rich and startling follow up to Page Mogan’s sensational debut The Beautiful and the Cursed, and is as good, if not better than it’s predecessor!
Darkly gothic and magical, The Lovely and the Lost was a superb sequel to an unexpectedly brilliant debut and I just adored it. Having read the first novel, The Beautiful and the Cursed with next to no real expectations, I honestly think this series is an absolute gem…and so underrated! Page Morgan transports her readers to such a compelling world in her stories and so eloquently depicts a dark world where those of proper society are woven together with all kinds of different creatures that go bump in the night.
Perfectly written and incredibly paced, The Lovely and the Lost is wonderfully detailed as Morgan continues to develop her overall storyline, whilst still allowing The Lovely and the Lost to have its own singular storyline. Book two in the series continues to focus around sisters Ingrid and Gabby and is told through their POV’s as well as that of some of the many electric characters Morgan has introduced during the first two books. Seeing through the eyes of so many characters, including Ingrid, Gabby, Luc, Vander and Grayson amongst others only manages to enhance the reading experience and give you a very well rounded view of the world and the goings on in the story.
I’m so in love with so many characters in this series that I almost have no words. Almost. The characters Page Morgan has written into this series are amazing to read about. Honestly, I don’t have a bad word to say about any of them and I adore the way they relate to one another. They all have such different relationships; from the romances Morgan explores to the bonds between sisters and brothers, to those that are close confidants and friends—they’re all so magical to read about, and it’s this sensational character dynamic that wins me over time and time again. With the turn of every page I’m falling for these characters and the connections they share. I’m one hundred invested in their individual relationships and have been since the very beginning.
I think Ingrid and Gabby are fantastic leading ladies, although I think Gabby is particularly awesome. The lass has some serious fire and spirit that continually entertains me. Gabby is such a strong young woman and though she may be rash, she means well and has all good intensions. The Lovely and the Lost sees Gabby in a pickle on more than one occasion, especially with some of her actions at the end of the novel that may change things forever.
As always I’m continuing to adore the romances featured in this series. Ingrid continues to grow closer to Vander and though her feelings for him deepen, her heart is still very much with Luc. Personally, I love Vander but see Ingrid and Luc more together; they just can’t seem to fight what they feel, despite the dangers and cautions about them getting involved, but I do foresee Page Morgan continuing to develop Ingrid’s relationship with both amazing young men; something that both excites and irks me!
Gabby and Nolan’s romance never fails to please me. These two have so much fire and electricity together that I read, desperate to stumble across a scene between the two, simply because I know how incredible it will be. Nolan and Gabby bring out the best, and worst, in each other and I love the spark Morgan brings to the story with their relationship. She may be a bit younger than he, but Nolan adores Gabby exactly the way she is, scars and all. Some difficult moments towards the end of the book have me worried for the stability of their relationship and I can only hope that Morgan doesn’t do anything too cruel with my favourite couple!
A surprising development in The Lovely and the Lost for me was the one between Ingrid and Gabby’s brother Grayson and the attraction he feels for Alliance member Chelle. This may have come from nowhere after the last book, but I’m excited over the prospect of a future romance between them. Grayson has some very real inner demons considering he shares hellhound blood but he really tried in this book and I hated that it kept blowing up in his face. After appearing as a minor character in The Beautiful and the Cursed it was interesting seeing him have a more feature role and I look forward to seeing him develop in future books.
There were quite a few unexpected twists in The Lovely and the Lost that will both delight and shock readers. Page Morgan continues to slowly develop her characters, adding new dimensions, and dangers, to her storyline to keep you lost amongst the compelling romance, heart-stopping danger and unending excitement! Stunning story—bring on the next book!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow, what a mess! Not the book itself, just the way it ended. I'm still reeling from the adrenaline rush. I'm always a little wary of sequels because of the dreaded second book syndrome, where the author spends more time on world-building than plot and character interactions, but The Lovely and the Lost suffers from none of that. In fact, I'd wager that I enjoyed this second book even more than The Beautiful and the Cursed!
The Lovely and the Lost picks up a month or two after the events of the first book. I won't allude to any of what happened in book one in order to keep this review spoiler-free, but if you read it, you know it was chock-full of danger, deceit and was a bit of an emotional roller coaster on all accounts. But if you thought the first book was full of action and suspense, it's got nothing on this sequel. New characters, new villains, and twists that even I didn't see coming, and with as much reading as I do, it's usually pretty easy for me to predict where the story is going. But I guess when you throw angels, gargoyles, and demons -- not to mention special demon powers -- into the mix, things are going to get pretty unpredictable.
I'm not always a fan of multiple third person perspectives in a story, but it really works in this series. There's just so much going on in the story that it warrants having multiple narrators so that the reader isn't completely lost. Plus, it saves on time since we already know what's happening and it doesn't need to be repeated from character to character so that everyone's clued in. Most point-of-view transitions are obvious and happen at the beginning of each chapter, though there are times when the switch happens in the middle of a chapter. Even so, Morgan does so seamlessly, maintaining the fast pace of this suspenseful story.
I appreciated the introduction of the new characters and the inclusion of characters that were only known on the periphery previously. But even more, I loved how much more developed the characterizations of Ingrid, Luc, Vander, Gabby, Nolan, Grayson, and yes, even Chelle, were in this sequel. (Though, I think the brooding Luc will always be my favorite.) The events of the first book undeniably changed each one of these characters, but what happened in this last 100 pages of this book will leave them irrevocably changed. It's to the point now that I don't know that some of them can come back from what they've been witness to over the last few months.
The author is a master at weaving all the threads of these characters together, and it's going to be hard to separate them going forward, with what's happened and what the future holds. Also, adding in the parental presence this time around? Genius! It makes things so much more difficult for everyone involved, but it also makes for endless entertainment as everyone tries to evade them.
The romances -- and there are several to consider in this series -- are really nicely drawn, as well. They were less of a focal point in the first book, but they've really picked up speed in this continuation of the story. Yes, the "triangle" that semi-existed in the first book is still present, but I think it's more than obvious where it's headed by the end of this book, especially considering -- but also despite -- certain circumstances. I think the impossibility of both are what make each so captivating. Regardless, all of the romances in this story take a hit by the end, and no one's future is very stable anymore.
This entire story is just endlessly entertaining, full of plenty of nail-biting moments. I love the gargoyle protectors and their angel overlords. I love the entire Waverly clan and all their problems. And I'm still very intrigued with what the Alliance has to do with all of it. This sequel was quite impressive considering all of the characters and plot threads the author has to keep track of. And I'm sure that the next book will be the best yet!
The Beautiful and The Cursed opened up an entirely new world for me, and this book continued into that world. What I love is that it is Morgan has a unique style of writing that draws me in, in such a way that I can't adequately describe the feeling. There are times when I pull myself out of her writing and know, that if it weren't for the beauty and feeling in her writing this story would not be what it is. I am not saying I don't love the story, because I absolutely do but Morgan gives it life and meaning. This being the second book in the series had the potential to fail, but instead it soared.
The pacing was once again almost perfect. I found a couple of spots here and there had a bit of a lull, but overall I found that I could not put the book down. The unique premise in which the Gargoyles exist and the line that is straddled by the Waverly siblings is unique. Though not all three have demon blood running through their veins, but they are each different from what society wants. I cannot help but wonder what they would do if one of them was not special, how would the story pan out then. There is also a little twist that I sensed but could not prove until later in the book, and I also couldn't place what had been the cause of it. It is one thing to know that "one of these things just aint like the others," but something completely different to know why.
It doesn't matter what sister you speak of I like both of them. However, I am partial to Gabby. I believe everyone underestimates her and her determination to not only protect but succeed. She may not be a fearless warrior but she has the heart of one. She also has something to prove, or feels as if she does and this sometimes leaves her judgement a little off. With Ingrid I found a lot of growth but I hope for more strength to come. She can do more than she believes, but I did find myself proud of her for beginning to step up and stand up for what she believed. No characters are perfect but these girls are something that make you not care about that.
The romance is both complicated and uncomplicated, it once again depends on the sister you are dealing with. If it is Gabby, things are simple. She loves Nolan, and despite the age gap (appropriate for the time setting) I think he is perfect for her. He makes her feel everything that she should. However, he is sometimes an ass, but at the same time it is mostly a show for his psychotic father. That guy is an ass and a half and I know that he is there so that not everything is happily ever after and easy for them (among other things), but I wish he would just bugger off. With Ingrid, things are much more complicated. There was always a hint of a triangle with her. Thing with it is, it never bothered me. Yes her heart may sometimes pull more than one way, but ultimately she knows what she wants just not how she could ever have it. I am not saying that I don't like Vander but Luc will blow him out of the water... or anywhere really.
The other mentionable is Greyson. He is not the way his sisters remember, his relationship with Ingrid is so far from what I expected. Given he is having a hard time dealing with his Hell Hound side, and I didn't expect him to bounce right back but his struggle was more than I could have expected. There was growth by the end of the book for him though and many moments in-between that made my heart ache for him. Also mentionable is the slight crush he seems to have going on, and although it does not seem to be reciprocated, I have my hopes.
The Lovely and The Lost was a great second book, that sadly finished in such a way I wanted to scream. I hope that the ache will be repaired in the next book because I will be as heartbroken as the character if it isn't. I am overall happy with the development and continue to love Morgan's writing and the characters she has created. With depth, and description The Dispossessed series is a complete win. Pick it up if you love historical reads that have a paranormal cross. If you are para lover that normally passes on the historical, you might want to give this series a go because Page Morgan has done it in a way that will blow your mind.
I received this ARC while attending the Less than Three Conference in October 2013, I was in no way compensated for this review.
When I saw Page Morgan's The Lovely and the Lost at the Less than Three Conference, for authors against bullying, I was quite happy! And I must say that Page really does pick the story up quite well, more than I expected. For in the first book, there was a lot of discovery going on for the Waverly siblings. Where those discoveries would take them was anyone's guess. But here, we get the answers! And then, of course, more questions!
It's been a month or so since we last saw our characters, not much has changed, but a lot is about to happen. Gabby is learning how to use the sword Nolan gave her, Grayson is dealing with being a hellhound some of the time and Ingrid is learning how to control her own powers and also deal with her never ending love triangle of Luc versus Vander.
The siblings are more than surprised however when their father makes an unexpected visit. Having tried to contact him when Grayson was missing, everyone is surprised when he actually shows up afterward. What I find surprising in this series is that Ingrid's mother does spend a little more time with her children. Granted, she's not there all the time, but she's there a lot more than other YA books' parents are. And let's just say that daddy dearest, isn't all that dear either.
Then there's the new gargoyle on the block who is sent to aid Luc is protecting the Waverly family. Luc isn't pleased with Dimitrie, but there really isn't much he can do about it. There are also a few new enemies popping up. I won't name names there, but it was quite surprising to see a whole cast of new characters coming in.
I mentioned in my review of The Beautiful and the Cursed, that I was more intrigued with Gabby and her story and that remains a bit true! I love Gabby and her feisty attitude! She is so willing to be apart of the Alliance and join them in battling evil, but sadly there is no warm welcome for her from the adults of the Alliance who make their return to Paris. It was saddening. Nolan does his best to comfort her and I admit, he did do a decent job of it! Still love him and his Scottish brogue!
Ingrid and her love problem, continues to be a problem it seems. She admits to herself to loving Luc and basically wanting to be with him, despite it being against the rules, and yet, she still allows herself "moments" with Vander. I don't get it. Hence the reason why I tend to loathe love triangles!
One of the new problems happens to be another child who was "gifted" with demon blood. He bears the powers of a spider demon and is causing a bit of havoc in Paris. The prologue gives us a little insight to him before we only get to know him more through Ingrid's POV segments.
As with the first novel, it's told in third person point of view through Ingrid, Gabby, Grayson and Luc. Always enjoyable to switch perspectives, especially Gabby, because yeah, a little gaa gaa over Nolan. But I enjoyed all their perspectives.
There was quite a bit of action in this one, as there were so very many problems to be dealt with. Each character has their own little problem going on and then there's always the greater issue that needs to be dealt with by all of them. With so much going on, there's never a dull moment!
The ending was quite shocking! Like the evil cliffhanger variety and now here I am stuck waiting til 2015 for the next one! The main problems are all resolved, but there is quite the onset of new problems starting with each character again. It's going to be amazing to see what happens next and I am eager with anticipation for a book that I don't even know the title of!
Overall, The Lovely and the Lost was the perfect read! Such exciting action, melting romance and the beautifully woven-in humor makes this a stunning read! And did I forget to mention the gargoyles? Because truly gargoyles rule!
I received a copy of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. No compensation was given, offered, or taken to alter this review.
What can I say? Expectations were high after I finished The Beautiful and the Cursed. I'm insanely happy to say that they were all met and surpassed (not that there was any doubt; I mean, this is Page Morgan's work we're talking about here).
The rich historical setting was just as immersive as it was the first time around. Morgan has a way with words. The narrative is rich and compelling and the switching POVs were all distinct and different. We're immediately brought back into a world of gargoyles and their human charges; specifically Luc's humans.
The plot was perfectly executed. I love this story so much. The back story is there so I know there's more to the world Morgan has built, but it doesn't overshadow the novel's events. Perfectly done, Miss Morgan. There are no words to describe it all. Truly. You just have to read and enjoy it. I was on the edge there reading the last sixty pages. I think I might've tensed up a few times too...
I loved the addition of Grayson to the cast. He was really easy to connect to and I enjoyed seeing him interact with Ingrid and Gabby. His storyline was really interesting and I'm curious to see where Morgan goes with it. Will he fade into the background? Or will be resurface and have an active role? Personally, I'm hoping for the latter.
Gabby is so cute. I really love her personality; it certainly spices things up. Her relationship with Nolan makes me smile just about every time they're together. I just wish we had more of Nolan. Of course, I'm sure I'll always be wishing for that. After all, IT'S NOLAN.
In addition to all of this, Ingrid is getting a hold on her powers but a certain someone is unknowingly making this more difficult. *glares* I did have a couple moments when I was frustrated with Ingrid because I knew she was making a mistake or I just wanted her to tell someone off. *huff* But Miss Morgan had to keep it in character so Ingrid didn't, even though I REALLY wanted her to.
There were also some interesting developments with Vander. That was surprising. I do think I'd like him better if he wasn't vying for Ingrid's affections. His story is a great addition to the series and I could potentially like him more... but my lips are sealed as to why.
Then there's Luc. Miss Morgan loves to torture me. Why does Luc have to be a gargoyle? Argh! He's a really cool and awesome gargoyle but, hello, he belongs with Ingrid. We finally learn about Luc's past so all of my questions there were answered. I know logically, after what he did, I shouldn't like him as much but Morgan has created a character that's both monster and human, and the human is pretty cool.
If I have to pick a favorite addition to the cast, I'd go with Marco. We met him in The Beautiful and the Cursed but things became official here. He's really grown on me and I really can't wait to see him in MORE action when the third book is released next year.
