Yōko Kamio (神尾葉子) is a popular Japanese manga artist and writer. She is most famous for Boys Over Flowers (花より男子, Hana Yori Dango?), for which she received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1996. Her work has been translated and distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America.

Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.

The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.

Kamio watched as the success of Hana Yori Dango's 1992 début followed through with many more months on the best-sellers list. Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.

Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.

While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.

Despite Hana Yori Dango's success, Kamio had originally planned to end the series by Spring 2000. However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. At one point, she got so wrapped up in the Hana Yori Dango storyline, that she confessed to having dreams about Doumyouji. Of course, she said that "Falling in love with a character that I created is just disgusting..."

Awww!! Sojiro's back story!! Love the picture of him on the cover!

Speaking of Sojiro... I love how the black raven feathers have become a thing for him now when he's being brutally honest. It makes me think of Ukoku Sanzo from Saiyuki Reload <3 <3 <3 <3 So much love!!

Oh my Ra! Tsubaki!!! She is the best!! I love her so much!! I think she is definitely my favorite of all the female characters in this series! When she walked in on Tsukushi and Tsukasa gettin' a little frisky, I about died laughing! She's amazing!!

Loved the cute chibi band picture of them at the very end! Super cute!

We got some interesting story for Souijiro in here. We get to see some backstory on his first love Sara and how Yuki revealed something so beautiful for him.

And then, Tsubaki is such a nice sister. She really adores Tsukushi and really in favor for their relationship.

Hmmmm, and we got some nice romantic encounter for the star crossed lovers this time. Way to go Tsukushi for letting Tsukasa move onto third base. Lol

Volume 28 leans into heartfelt drama, balancing tender scenes with moments of intense emotional conflict. Tsukushi’s determination and Tsukasa’s persistence remain the core, though family and societal pressures still loom over them. While the progression is small, it’s more about emotional clarity than major plot moves. The art excels in close-up expressions, heightening the emotional weight of key scenes.

Tidak tanggung-tanggung, New York City!
Sadly beautiful....

One of my most favorite volume so far.

Volviendo a los protagonistas ¡Se van a New York!

Continuing the sordid love lives of young Japanese teens: underprivileged and over. I still enjoy reading about Tsukushi and Tsukasa even though I've seen the anime series. This abounding hope never gets old :)

It was interesting to see one of the side characters, Sojiro, finally get some backstory, though admittedly I didn’t particularly care for the story itself. Things are also getting a bit outlandish between Tsukushi and Tsukasa. Overall though I just wasn’t particularly invested in this.

We learn more about Soijiro's past and why he won't consider dating Yuki. Plus, now that Tsukushi and Tsukasa's relationship is revealed to their friends and his sister, the clock is surely counting down to when his mother finds. There's going to be more heartache in the future, I fear.

I have to say that the Soujiro side (back) story did a lot for the character - he'll always be one of "the other two" in terms of the F4, but I appreciate Kano's effort to make him more than that.

One encounter... One Chance...

"Ichigo Ichie." Sojiro, the next headmaster of his family's tea house in the manga Hana Yori Dango (Vol 28), explains that this means that we shouldn't let this moment pass because it will never come again.

We only have this moment in time right now. This encounter will never happen again. It's your one chance to experience it.

I was thinking about this at the gym as two older women teased each other about their stuff touching and then explained loudly that there used to be a woman who freaked out if your sneakers touched her stuff. The row of half-dressed women expounded on their experiences with this same woman. Finally, the naked beanpole next to me announced, "She must be very unhappy."

"Life's too short," I said. It's too short to be so unhappy that little things make you rant. It's too short to get frustrated over crowded locker rooms or the rude woman next to you on the bench. It's too short to not make every moment, every encounter, every interaction important. Even the little things in life become critical- the lunch you made for a child, the smile you gave the tired cashier, the old woman you held the door for. These things are no longer meaningless actions but become one more encounter that you'll never have back when it's gone.

One encounter, One chance! Sojiro uses this saying to justify his numerous sexual encounters and it costs him the one love he might have had. Reflecting back on how much his behavior and his choices have hurt him, he struggles to chose love this time- almost as if he doesn't deserve it, as if he's screwed up everything forever.

The choices we make now will affect our future and maybe even the future of those who encounter us. So use today wisely. Protect a child or an animal. Love someone who needs love. Show tolerance and forgiveness to someone who isn't using his or her day wisely. Practice patience and endurance when hardship comes. Don't blame the bearer of bad news when it comes. Find joy in the small things and be slow to anger. Return rudeness with kindness and gentleness. Chose self-control over self-indulgence. Be fiercely faithful to those you love and the principles you live by. One encounter- one chance... what happened when you tried to live like this today. Let me what happened to you today!

There was something in the way all of the characters came together that I found irresistibly compelling about this series. It did remind me a lot of Ouran while I was reading it and maybe that is why I liked it so much. Tsukushi is an interesting protagonist, I loved when she started taking action and sticking up for herself.

While I wasn’t overly fond of the artwork style I was able to get past it because I my love for the storyline. This is an honest story with twists and turns, ups and downs, but then again that is real life.

I would really recommend watching the anime too!

My favorite so far

I've been reading this series and this is my favorite volume. We know the characters, they're beginning to really mature and the romances are so.touching. Exactly what shojo manga is at its best. Sweet, romantic and funny.
