Recollection

Rate this book
What if you had a perfect memory?

But every mundane or terrible thing you've seen or done was forever seared in your mind?

Recollection follows Jeremy Peoples, a DC radio talk show host cursed with uncontrollably precise recall. Seven years after violence erupted at his school―and now nearly lost to a past that feels more vivid than the present―Jeremy is tormented by his belief that he escaped blame for the slayings. However, during a harrowing broadcast confessional to find forgiveness on the eve of a new millennium…

…a shocking turn of events lures Jeremy home to Wisconsin and once again, back into danger.

A gritty psychological thriller, Recollection descends with Jeremy, grasping for redemption, before he succumbs to darkness, addiction, and the cat-and-mouse consequences of betrayal.

Recollection (inspired by John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meaney") is for fans of unputdownable suspense who prefer emotional and spiritual depth in their thrillers―like Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl," Dennis Lehane's "Mystic River" or "This is Where it Ends," by Marieke Nijkamp―and anyone who craves Historical Fiction set in the 1990s.

This story contains content that may be troubling to some readers, including―but not limited to―depictions of attempted suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, vulgar and insensitive language, bullying, a mass casualty event, PTSD, sexual content and vivid nightmare imagery. Please be mindful of these and other possible triggers contained within this work of fiction.

“Loneliness is the demon that exhausts you with noise from people you don’t want to be around and silence from the people you can’t be without.”

Not my usual genre of book, but I enjoyed it. The main character is very hard to love and yet, very hard not to root for, that’s what kept me going. I had to see the fruition of his horrible life choices. The story took me to dark places I’ve never been and I can’t fathom. Honestly, those parts were hard (uncomfortable) for me to read.
The main character development is very well done, even if his character is questionable!
The storyline moved from present to past seamlessly.
The book ultimately is a redemption story and I would definitely recommend it.

Original review from Reedsy copy and pasted below. Link to Reedsy review: https://reedsy.com/discovery/book/rec...

Imagine having the perfect memory. Recalling events, dates, details with precision. Never forgetting a birthday, an anniversary, facts for an exam, a bill's due date, a password. Easily bringing forth to mind your happiest memories, every detail of your wedding day, your child's birth, every time you laughed until you cried, every compliment you've ever received.

Now imagine that you also can't forget any of the traumatic things that happened in your life. Any of the particulars. Your mind cannot let them go, cannot block them out, cannot protect you from the terrible, the horrific, the catastrophic.

That's what it's like for Jeremy Peoples, a radio talk show DJ in Washington, DC. He has hyperthymesia (though not mentioned by name in the book, and I thought it was called an eidetic memory, but that's related to visual images), an incredibly rare, flawless, autobiographical memory. While it has its benefits, how can he heal from his trauma if he can never let anything go? If he's haunted by his own memories in debilitating detail? Jeremy believes he's really to blame for the shooting that happened at his high school in 1992, and has been tormented by the memories and guilt ever since. Now, on New Year's Eve 1999, he attempts to gain forgiveness from the shooter himself, live on the radio. A caller draws him back to his hometown in Wisconsin, and he's catapulted back into danger.

Author Jeremiah Beck does a phenomenal job with Recollection. Beck's writing is exquisite and compelling, with a fully expanded character arc in Jeremy. His descriptions are vivid and the prose is fluid, perfectly executing Jeremy's spiral into addiction and darkness, desperate for redemption, while touching on aspects of the human condition that are still relatable even without those specific experiences. "The only thing I love about time is that it keeps moving. When mistakes are made, more opportunities to win or lose rush toward me unrelentingly. I control none of it." I highlighted several more quotes while reading.

Despite Jeremy's flaws and continual poor decisions, I was instantly hooked to his story and it had my full, rapt attention from start to finish. I was cringing, but couldn't look away. I was completely engaged, desperate to turn page after page, regardless of the 500+ page count.

This is perfect for fans of dark, gritty, psychological thrillers, and readers who can stomach graphic content. Because it goes there.

Recollection is an excellent debut, and I look forward to reading more of Jeremiah Beck's work in the future.

Content Warnings include: mass shooting, suicidal ideation, graphic suicide attempt, heavy drug and alcohol abuse/addiction, graphic language, violence, gun violence, bullying, PTSD, and more.

Ugh. I’m in the minority here but here I am. Too much buildup not enough punch. Too repetitive. I wanted to like this book but I just can’t. Had high hopes but didn’t pull through.

Good writing - but needs a lot of editing. #sorry

Recollection was such a wild ride of a book.
Jeremy People's, a radio talk show host, cursed with uncontrollably precise recall of every mundane or terrible thing he has done because he has the perfect memory. He remembers everything in perfect detail. (I'd hate to live with that after reading this book)
Seven years after violence erupted in his school. Jeremy is absolutely tormented by the belief that he escaped blame for the deaths and injuries. However, just as he begins a harrowing broadcast confessional with the killer in a desperate attempt to find forgiveness....a shocking turn of events lures him back into danger.
Jeremy is haunted by flashbacks of lost love as he grasps for redemption before succumbing to darkness, addiction, and the consequences of betrayal.

This is the first time I have read a book, HATED the main character, but couldn't help but root for him. I had so many flashbacks of the 90s while reading this, and yes! Like the Ford Tempo (except mine was an automatic) and Basic brand of cigarettes 😆
My heart broke 💔 at the last couple of chapters..
I will warn you that this has a trigger warning even though I wasn't triggered. But there is content of attempted suicide, drug abuse and alcohol abuse, bad language, bulling, mass casualty events, sex and vivid nightmare imagery.

In a society where the more you have is best, is it possible to have too much of something? What about your memories – obviously, it’s best if they are intact, but then what – which is more desirable, to be selective or remember them all?

Jeremy Peoples is a successful radio DJ in Washington, D.C. His ability to charm his audience with his words and song selections shows a potential promotion transporting him to New York. Jeremy wears many hats – his most consuming and difficult one to handle is that of a survivor; in his senior year of high school in Sugar River, Wisconsin, there was a mass school shooting – with many injured and killed and two bullet holes as souvenirs for Jeremy. He doesn’t luck out with just the physical scars, but thanks to perfect recall, he is plagued with the memories of that day, among all the others, every day of his life.

Deaths, abuse, evil, doubts, concerns, guilt, etc., have followed Jeremy throughout his life in his relentless memories, never allowing him a moment’s peace. He chooses his ways of quieting the continuous playback in his head, leading him down a quick path of self-destruction. On New Year’s Eve of Y2K, Jeremy tries a last-ditch effort to unload his burden while on the air, yet, the attempt backfires and sends him on a trip back home to Wisconsin to work on making amends and coming to terms with the past, present, and the likelihood for his future.

The tone in “Recollection” is, at separate times, dark, intense, frustrating, raw, vulnerable, uncomfortable, eye-opening, and energetic. I wanted to zip through the story because it’s exciting, suspenseful, and draws the reader; however, I took frequent breaks to process situations. The main character Jeremy struggles with hyperthymesia, having an autobiographical memory that can recall all events in one’s life – significant and mundane.

I appreciate learning something while being sucked into this suspenseful psychological thriller. Throughout the story, themes include the crucial need for forgiveness when you can’t forgive yourself, continuous grieving for lost loved ones, finding any light in the dark while feeling lost, alone, and afraid, regression in mental health symptoms, abuse in various forms, and apologetics.

“Recollection” is a fast-paced story, alternating between past and present memories, with the extra energy to carry the reader along the wild and crazy ride in the hopes of better understanding yourself and making things right. With many triggers throughout the story, it is appropriate for a mature audience with an open mind.

I have to say, i selfishly always try to put myself in the protagonists shoes. There is normally something I can connect myself to within the character. This time, I didn’t have that. Jeremy was not a protagonist I was rooting for. Honestly, I just hated his attitude towards life. This is not to say I do not understand that Jeremy People’s had a rough life. I loved the character development through this book. Dispute the growth in his character, Jeremy still bothered me. Now, why did I give this 5 stars if the protagonist was terrible. Simply because despite all of that I truly enjoyed traveling to the 90s and reliving some tragic moments. The story was well written and had a really great format. I truly enjoyed the journey, even if it wasn’t my own.
I want to thank Jerimiah Beck & the publishers for the ARC from Netgalley.

Jeremy Peoples is a radio dj in DC and it’s New Year’s Eve, 1999. He’s hosting a show where people confess their sins, and he confesses his own: he feels at fault for his school being shot up, and he lets the shooter know personally on air his part in it all. Everything goes smoothly, except the shooter has a message for him and someone else from his past has one too — both summon him back to his home town in Wisconsin, as soon as possible. What lies ahead is a Bojack Horseman meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style spiral, as he goes and confronts his demons.

This book was dark. Brutal even. This was a hard read — I had to do it over the course of a couple days not to get too caught up in its narrative. This took a lot of turns, some that hit closer to home than others, but I’m glad I pulled through.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pay attention to the trigger warnings in the beginning of the book because things are rather graphically described and I even had to skip a few pages towards the end because I couldn’t do it. For those who haven’t heard, here’s the list…

TW: depictions of attempted suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, insensitive language/bullying, a mass casualty event, PTSD, sexual content, and vivid nightmare imagery.

Overall this is one of those books I’ll think about a lot. I’m giving it 4.5/5 stars as I wish the ending showed outside of him a bit or there was some kind of epilogue because there are things I wish I knew about next.

TLDR: I rate this 4.5/5 stars and I do recommend but don’t do all in one night for the sake of your mental health, and do pay attention to the trigger warnings for sure.

RECOLLECTION: A taut, emotionally heavy story of trauma and redemption
What if your memory was perfect, giving you the ability to remember the tiniest detail of every single day of your life? It sounds like a superpower, right? Well, to Jeremy Poeples, a popular and controversial rock radio host, it is more of a burden, because he is the survivor of a school shooting in the nineties, which led to the death of his girlfriend Sarah, and he remembers every single instant of it, and feels very guilty. I will not get into the specifics of how and why this is, because that would mean spoiling the book, but let me tell you that RECOLLECTION, by Jeremiah Beck, is the most tense and emotional thriller that I have read this year. Those who love the 90's will find a thriller chock full of references to the period. This novel is the most powerful anti-bullying manifesto of all time, perfectly showing how something so often regarded as a stupid, childish joke, can create actual, flesh-and-blood monsters. A powerful meditation on trauma, addiction, violence, death, survival, doubt and faith, RECOLLECTION gets a solid, solid ten out of five. This is a freaking masterpiece of the genre!

If you can’t handle the heavy and dark stuff, this one isn’t for you.
It is heavy, intense, chilling and psychological.

This book is a trip. At first I was just along for the ride. Beck is great at keeping you on the edge of your seat wanting for the story to unfold more and more. I was completely immersed in the story and content with the curiosity he incited. (Also so intrigued that Jeremiah Beck (who is a radio personality from Wi) wrote a book with a MMC named Jeremy who is a radio personality from Wi….🤔)
But as I read, reoccurring things kept coming up and that drove me to start questioning what was going on. Why do these things keep coming up? What’s the deal? What was I missing?
All I’m going to say is if you don’t know about the Jack of Clubs you need to research it. You can read this book and not know but knowing will make it so much better. You will realize how methodical Beck is in his writing. I feel like the majority of people won’t ever connect some of these things and that makes me a little sad.
This is a longer book but you will be captivated the whole time with all of the twists and turns.

This will be a top recommended book for me this year. Anyone who can handle the darkness should read this. This is one hell of a debut. I’ll be back for the next book. 🖤

You know that feeling after you finish a book and you know it’s going to “stay with you” for a while? This is one of those books.
I will admit the number of pages initially were intimidating— but once I hit the midway point, I could not put it down. I never knew I could hate and love a main character so much. At times I felt sorry for him and at times I felt he deserved some things that happened to him. Either way, I needed to know what was going to become of him, and what the inevitable outcomes of his choices would be, whether good or bad.

Without revealing any spoilers, I will say the ending of this book had me in tears, and I honestly couldn’t tell if they were happy tears or sad tears! Probably a mix of both. Regardless— it was that “full circle” feeling, and was executed perfectly.

A deep, dark, disturbing, haunting, psychologically mind-bending, sad, inspiring story of fate & redemption. How every choice and decision you make in life, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, can impact not only you, but the lives of others, forever.
& How having a perfect memory can be both a blessing and a curse.
(As for Jeremy Peoples, I would say it is the latter).

Thank you to author Jeremiah Beck for my gifted copy of “Recollection”!
& Congratulations on the success of your first novel— well done and well deserved!

Go read this, now!

So many thoughts go through my mind about this book, but nothing compared to the main character, Jeremy Peoples. The year is 1999 - Jeremy is a successful radio DJ in Washington, D.C. who has a knack for public speaking and song selections, and he's preparing his best show for Y2K; but otherwise, he struggles with the recollection of everything that's ever happened to him throughout his life - an autobiographical memory with the term hyperthymesia (there are only, like, 10 people worldwide who have it, in real life, with mixed results on their personal feelings about it). Jeremy is a survivor of a mass school shooting in 1992; his girlfriend was shot dead, and he can't move past the constant triggers and reminders in his brain of that fateful day, and the days leading up, even 7 years later. I found "Recollection" to be a coming-of-age story for Jeremy because he begins in a certain way at the beginning of the story, but then by the end, he has experienced so many events and life lessons that he finally figures out how to piece it all together to experience the peace and forgiveness he has been craving for so long.
The majority of the story includes dark and cringy tones, yet it is eye-opening to the reader in each's individualized viewpoint. I loved "Recollection" and look forward to future works from Jeremiah Beck!

Recommend Wholeheartedly

It took me a better part of a day, but I read this in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. The writing was eloquent and intelligent. The storyline was difficult but enjoyable and I wouldn’t have liked it any other way. It’s hard to explain, but I absolutely recommend this book.! it gives you a lot to think about especially now that it’s over and I can reflect back. Highlighted quite a few spots and I plan to keep them in my phone notes to review occasionally; that’s how much I enjoyed this book and I’m kind of a hard critic. please go out of your way and read this one. You will not be disappointed.

It was so hard for me to get through this book. The writing was good and it was a nice story on forgiveness and redemption but it was just so long. I feel like it could have been edited in half. The excessive detailed descriptions slowed down the plot progression. With such a heavy subject matter it was just too much for me. When I got halfway through it I started skipping ahead so I could be done with it. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if it had been shorter and had a clearer focus on the plot.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book.

This books has A LOT of triggers and will take you to some of the darkest places.

This book was by far the BEST read of 2024! I was always kept on the edge of my seat! I was questioning whether or not I was right about the outcome and the ending left me tearing up. I would love to read more books by Beck.

The character development for this book was absolutely phenomenal. Jeremy could be hard to love but you would always root for him. The way the book went from past to present was amazing. It was done flawlessly.

Thank you to NetGalley and Jeremiah Beck for allowing me to read this Arc! I am not being compensated, and this is my 100% unbiased and honest review.

Not my usual genre, but the story was intriguing. Lots of adults behaving badly, but it gave some insight into why people self-medicate with drugs & continue to make other bad choices. Life hurts, especially if you have no community to help you deal with trauma, but there is hope for us all.

Facinating and imaginative story

I loved the premise of this book because I had never read a book based on a character who has impeccable recall. Very creative and I really appreciate a well thought out, original approach.

Here are the Pros:
Unfortunately for the protagonist, Jeremy, there are lots he’d like to forget; early heartbreak, a school shooting, an abusive father, poor choices, drug and alcohol abuse, fame, money, and success…so much to remember, but for Jeremy, the inability to forget the past complicates any positive moments or accomplishments in his life. The unfolding of his story is well done, and the author does an excellent job developing a believable character who possesses an unbelievable (and unwanted), affliction.

Jeremy struggles greatly with choices past, present, and future. His inability to make decisions without over analyzing each one reads true for someone who has experienced trauma and (probably) suffers from PTSD. He is self destructive and his emotional pain leaves him prone to suicidal ideation that presents as extreme risk taking with his life. His insatiable need to atone for past actions drives his every waking moment, yet, he will blur himself into oblivion with drugs and alcohol to numb the memories. These actions, in fact, hinder his progress. I rooted for him at each turn, feeling every inch of my own codependency wanting to reach out and help him. The author did a great job making Jeremy’s character believable in extraordinarily complicated circumstances. The writing is above average.

Cons: Unnecessarily long. Tighter editing could have propped up an already original story without scene after scene involving an immense amount of wordy, internal dialogue. Endless monologuing. The storyline with the trio of drug dealing female *friends,* was wholly unnecessary, adding little to the meat of the story and felt a lot like filler. And finally, the hugely rushed introduction of religion and forgiveness at the end of the novel made me cringe. (I’m not a fan of religion, so this is definitely personal preference). I felt Jeremy was truly a victim of his circumstances—he did not have a supportive and loving family, did not have adequate help after experiencing a life altering experience, and he fell in love with someone truly not available to him, therefore putting himself in extreme danger. The pastor’s confusing rush of last rites and the pushiness of his “forgiveness pitch” as the only way through was overplayed.

Overall, I recommend this book AND author for structure, character development, believable storyline, original ideas and application, and the creation of some above average heart pounding moments. It is solid and interesting. I congratulate the author on a well done, debut novel!

This was a very dark, often depressing, twisty tale. It's well-written, but I feel like it could've been a bit shorter.

I found it difficult to read at times because of the subject matter and because of the way it jumped around. It was also hard for me to connect with or even like the characters, which I think was kind of the point. There was a lot going on in the book. It's definitely not a light read. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for something dark and haunting and raw.

I read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. All comments are my own.

I was often really annoyed with the main character Jeremy People's because I just wanted him to get over himself and to stop being so damn self destructive. It was like a rollercoaster of ups and so many downs in this guys life it was almost depressing. Although, I did understand where he was coming from and the tragedy he went through. I enjoyed traveling back through the 90's and story itself. Kept turning the passages waiting to learn just how far over the edge Jeremy would push himself and hoping he would find some sort of peace.Very well written for being the authors first book. Thanks to the author for sending me the book to review.

It's best to keep in mind when reading the book that many of us are never going to relate to the main character - most of us are not so self destructive with our lives. Trigger warnings: Realistic discussions of drugs, violence, sex, suicide, bullying, school shooting.

Brilliant

I'd considered reading Recollection a few times before I actually bought it. The storyline surrounding a school shooting seemed too heavy for my typical reading to unwind.

Call it morbid curiosity, eventually I was curious enough to purchase and read. The story revolves around Jeremy Peoples who has a perfect memory in a past littered with unimaginatively painful memories.

Jeremy is the most self destructive, disaster of a character I have read in a long time. Maybe ever. He is not a likeable guy. At all. Yet I was begging for his redemption. Why? Beck brilliantly made me care for a protagonist who is arguably unlovable.

As for the plot, it had plenty of twists and turns that kept me engaged the entire time.

Recollection does not have the feeling of a debut novel. The cast of characters, the plot, the dialogue all invite you into the story and it's not possible to escape it. I'm here for Beck's next book. I can't wait to read it.

Recollection by Jeremiah Beck is a wild, thought-provoking sci-fi that really makes you think about memory, identity, and what shapes who we are. The story jumps between timelines and perspectives as the protagonist pieces together their fractured memories, keeping you guessing and engaged the whole way.

The characters feel real and layered, each wrestling with tough choices and personal demons, which adds an emotional punch to all the mind-bending sci-fi concepts. Some parts are a bit heavy or confusing, especially with the nonlinear storytelling and philosophical musings, but that’s part of the fun if you like a story that makes you think.

If you enjoy sci-fi that’s smart, a little messy, and really makes you puzzle things out, Recollection is definitely worth checking out. It’s challenging, but in a way that keeps you hooked and thinking long after the last page.

I know you shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover" but unfortunately I do this alot. This book has been sitting on my shelf for months because everytime I picked my next read this cover just didn't grab my attention.... well I finally just made myself start reading it a few days ago..OMG! I definitely regret not starting this book as soon as I received it! This book was an emotional roller-coaster for me. One minute I hated Jeremy, the next I just wanted to give him a big hug. The author did such an awesome job with the internal dialogue in Jeremy's memories. While alot of the book is "dark" and full of twisted thoughts .. its also so....
real. I'd definitely recommend reading this book!

Great book!

''Recollection'' is a gripping psychological thriller novel that will keep you obsessed. This is an intense novel that deepens the mind of the main character, exploring his fears and the dark recesses of his psyche. The plot goes to Jeremy, a guy who has memories of some murders seven years ago in his city in high school, while he must navigate the maze of his fractured memory to discover the truth about what happened those days. With each turn, the boundaries between reality and illusion are unbridled, which leads to a shocking climax that will keep you asking what happened. The narration of this book is excellent, driven by emotional and mental conflicts, and creates an atmosphere of suspense. I highly recommend it.
