New England is not just colorful in autumn but throughout the history of its states—including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Through the trials and triumphs of the early years of American history, to the turbulent 1930s, enjoy five stories laced with history, faith, and romance. Will these couples find a place to call home among the northeastern states?
FROM AUTHOR'S WEBSITE: I'm a native of central Maine, and grew up on a small farm with a wonderful mom and dad, three sisters and a brother. Most of my books take place in small towns, many of them in Maine.
My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!
Our children are all home-schooled. When Jim retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, we moved from Maine to Kentucky.
I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.
For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.
Five historical romance stories are told by five different authors and are centered around the northeast. Each story has romance, history, faith, love, and family all mixed together to make an enjoyable book.
I enjoyed each of these stories. The main theme of strength amidst trials was a nice touch from the usual historical romances that I've read recently. The stories were clean and had strong elements of faith. All five authors brought a different perspective and yet the stories fit well together. None of these stories were tied together, yet I felt that each one fit well in the book. I liked the book well enough to add it to my collection.
I received this book free of charge from Barbour in exchange for my honest review.
The Prisoner’s Wife-Without giving things away, I liked how things played out. I’m glad the bad guy was who he was, glad how the truth came about being known. Love’s Raid-I think it’s sweet how Daniel secretly had a crush on Clara even growing up, so glad she knew the loss of a limb didn’t take away from the authentic masculinity that was Daniel. The ending with Lewis was not what I thought would happen but so happy it happened as it did. Micheala’s Choice-Right from the start Aunt Clara reminds us the Lord will go through the valleys with us and quotes scripture, love it! Michaela’s choice-I love how Michaela realizes despite still praying & attending church, she hadn’t been walking close to God and was too busy holding onto her pain, sorrow, & guilt. “I haven’t walked with the Spirit of God allowing Him to restore me and fill me with the joy of His presence.” “God is the only One who can give me back my joy.” All that Glitters-Gods message to Fran was to have faith over and over by multiple people. In the end He works all out for His glory. A lesson we all need to cling to. In Search of a Dream- a sweet story of a young woman’s love that perseveres through hard, troubling, and difficult circumstances to get through to a man whose locked himself up so tight he has refused contact w anyone. They face challenges together which all helps him come back to the Father whose always been there loving him through it all, as well as his friends and “family.”
The Prisoner's Wife by Susan Page Davis **** I really liked it This historical romantic suspense captured my interest right from the start. Great storytelling.
Love's Raid by Darlene Franklin *** I liked it A good old-fashioned romance with a spunky heroine and a wounded veteran hero.
Michaela's Choice by Lisa Harris **** I really liked it A wonderful romance delivered by one of my favourite authors. Herein were characters I really grew to like. I especially appreciate the apt title of this book.
All That Glitters by Lynette Sowell *** I liked it This historical romance has lots of story tension. Will true love win in the end or be crushed by the self-serving ambitions of others opposed to the love match?
In Search of a Dream by Pamela Griffin **** I really liked it Thoroughly entertaining.
I liked that each story was in a different time period (1720, 1864, 1881, 1895, 1937). I liked 3 of the stories "The Prisoner's Wife, Love's Raid, and In Search of a Dream." These stories were rich in the history of their time frame. They were filled with the struggles and injustice of the time and the ravages of war both emotional and physical.
I needed/ wanted some easy reading and this was on my list. I only read 4 out of the 5 novellas. The stories were set in different time periods and states and that was fun, but after a while the characters started to blend together. It was good “bubble” reading and I did learn some history. Win/ win!
The New England Romance Collection was a really good book with five different historical, Christian fiction stories. The stories ranged from the early 1700's to the early 1900's. I really enjoyed reading all five stories.
