The Alaska Brides
This is a collection of five full novels; All interestingly written. I laughed through my first one – it set a great mood for the whole collection. Combine a stubborn Irishman and hardheaded proud Texan and your poor belly will hurt from laughing. Meredith and Ian’s story is very sweet. Made me wish for Alaskan cold wild life. Tucker brings great counteract to their love, threatening but not frightening. I loved it. But it is also the reason I didn’t like Tucker’s love story. He deserved so much more then the author gave him. If it were up to me I would have made his story a highlight of the whole collection giving him all the love and respect he missed out on in his hard life. But more later.
Braden hurt and burdened by his wife’s death in childbirth has decided that the only refuge will be by leaving Oregon farm life to go to Alaska to live with his brother. Amy a Russian and Eskimo girl hasn’t heard anything from her father and after she is pushed under the running horses she decides that she needs to go and see her father never even bothering to heed God’s message to wait. But as the both are headed in the same direction she crosses paths with Braden and of course with trouble that just won’t stop following Amy. Stubborn worse than his brother and also grieving Braden doesn’t yield an inch to Amy, she is driven by the mystery of her father’s supposed death. Only when risk is running too high and danger is way too close does Braden realize that he can’t lose Amy. But God is good and there is a reason we should heed His message. I loved their story. It stirred all kinds of emotion and that made it rich.
Tucker and Fiona’s story should be sweeter. They still got their happily ever after but it would have been better if it came earlier. All that junk about The Right Thing is messed up in this book, more than messed up. This book is the reason I’m giving it a four.
Julie – a graduated nurse is finally going home to her northern Alaska. Home sweet home. But after being held up in Doctor’s office she is driving home alone. And the blizzard hits. A kind stranger comes to her rescue and in turn needs her to dig him out of the river. Only later does she realize that this stranger is a long time friend of her brother’s August. Sam is smitten from first sight and even though Amy is responding to his kisses, her confusion about her future and the plans she has been making are about to rip Sam’s heart in a million pieces. I loved the details about the quest to bring the Diphtheria antidote to Alaska. I was so taken I read authors notes for the actual facts about the journey it took.
It is the Second World War. Hitler’s cruelness is affecting even Canadian and Alaskan citizens so far from the actual fight. Beth left a widow with two toddler boys is struggling to make a go of life without her beloved Gary. August- Amy’s brother, is disappointed in God more than ever because God not only left him a bachelor but also blocked his path into the Army to fight in the world war. But then there is the threat of Japanese attack on Alaska and Navy is pulling anyone willing to help build the Highway from America through Canada and into Alaska. A great challenge. When Beth’s boys wonder to the river and Phillip falls in, a whole new chapter opens in Beth’s and August lives. Amazing love story. A story, that required courage and faith and a miracle, to put these two together.
In all these books authors did an amazing job describing Alaska – its charms and its chclenges. The historical facts from Gold – Rush to World-War. I loved it. Wilderness life, city life, navy camps … these books take you everywhere. And it amazed me. I knew so little about Alaska before this book now I feel like I lived there.

The first three books were connected and I spent a good deal of time on the forth one trying to figure out how it was going to connect. As it turns out the last 2 books are independent of the others. I enjoyed all 5 stories and the characters, their trials of life and the faith they relied on.

I was disappointed in this collection. While the stories themselves were ok, several of them were novellas that were released in previous collections I had already read. These are pricey enough that I don't want to be buying collections with stories I've already read.

5 wonderful stories all about Alaska and so many historical leaps and references. I especially enjoyed the first three and how the authors, Cathy hake, Mary connealy and Kathleen y’barbo were able to mesh their stories so easily it seemed. These stories of the first Alaskan settlers were just amazing. I was a bit disappointed in the 4th dymtory by tracie Peterson. Her stories are usually so rich with emotion. I got the historical impact of the story but not my normal reaction of crying and laughing. Maybe too intent on the history, or my own disappointment that it wasn’t another continuation with the same family from the first 3 books. But her 2nd story (the 5th in book) gave it all back to me plus some!!!! Tracie Peterson continues to be one of my favorite authors. Couldn’t put it down! You know what that means.

3.5*
This collection of five novellas, written by four leading Christian historical fiction authors, is an enjoyable adventure into the heart of the Land of the Midnight Sun. The first three novellas tell the stories of three members of two families who would become inextricably connected. Old hurts are overcome by surprising new loves, while secrets and tragedies are overcome in the midst of endless nights and endless days through a united love of God. The last two novellas are also related, telling the stories of a pair of Alaska-native siblings as they find love that will last a lifetime. I liked the last two stories the best, while the third story of the collection - Golden Twilight by Kathleen Y'Barbo - was the most disappointing. Spanning several decades, the stories in this collection will lead to a curiosity about mysterious Alaska, as well as the warmth you can only get from a satisfying ending.

This book is a collection of five Christian romance books. It starts in the late 1800s and continues until the mid 1900s and follows the lives of several families as they live life in Alaska. All arrive in Alaska for different reasons but all find love and marriage by the end. Each story was about 100 pages and they were all easy reads with a strong Christian faith based theme.

Gifted to me from a friend I will pass it on. Sweet stories with happy endings.

This was a really nice collection of heart-warming historical romances, set in the Alaskan frontier. I especially liked how the first three stories, and the final two stories were connected to each other. The final story really pulled on the ol' heart strings <3 The events in each of the novellas were also based on real life events from these long ago times. This was a very enjoyable read. Highly recommended!

Enjoyable Read

I live in Alaska and I enjoyed reading the Alaska Brides Collection. I like how the books build on each other. The first 3 books are one continuous story and the last 2 were also 1 story. The research is true and the fiction goes along with the history of Alaska. It’s great reading Christian fiction of The Last Frontier.

The first three novellas seamlessly messed together. The second one, written by Mary Connealy had hilarious moments. The last two, written by Tracie Peterson were good but not great. They seemed almost cookie cutter.

A light hearted read

I loved that each story built on the characters for the first 3 books and then for the last 2 books. I took this series on my kindle on vacation and they were light hearted enough to read off and on throughout the trip. Loved learning about Alaska too!

A little over-kill having the 5 stories in one book. 3 went together, then 2 went together. By the time I started the 4th story and realized that it was all different characters, I questioned finishing it. I did, but it slowed down considerably. Not bad stories, just not a good grouping.

I really liked the first 3 stories. Loved how they all came together. Wish the last two stories would of finished off the first 3. To many unanswered questions for me. The last 2 were a little heavy on God. Not my kind of reading.

My Thoughts On The Book: I am not a huge fan of anthologies, a drawback from college days. Yet, I am glad to have chosen this beautiful collection. The Alaska Brides Collection is so much more than just a bunch of historical romances. I have always wanted to go to Alaska and these stories just fueled the fire even more with their educational enlightenment of Alaska. I was hooked from the dog sleds to health outbreaks, the restriction of women at the time to how people handled the summer midnight sun. Every story made me wish I had lived there in the 1800's. As it always goes with anthologies sometimes you will have a winner, sometimes you will have a solid good read, and other times you will read the last chapter and call it a day. This anthology is no different. I loved a couple, liked a couple and read the last chapter of one after trying to plod through it. All in all I got a taste of several writers. I liked a few and will avoid a few. I would give this book a 3.5. You will definitely find a winner in at least one.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Alaskan Brides Collection is five historical fiction story written by five four amazing authors. One author writes two of the stories. The stories in this collection the authors, and a blurb about each story are as follows:
Golden Dawn by Cathy Marie Hake…. Living on her twin brother’s Alaska claim, Meredith Smith regularly refuses marriage proposals that give her little hope for being more than a maid and a cook, but it is the neighbor, Ian Rafferty, who offers only Christian friendship who intrigues her most. Will secrets from her past bar her from any chance at a loving marriage?
Golden Days by Mary Connealy……..Amy Simons may be small, but she is tough and strong enough to survive Alaska’s worst—if only she can reach her father, a trapper in the wilderness. Brandon Rafferty hopes to escape the grief of losing his wife, but he didn’t expect to find another needy woman along the way, another woman who will depend on him for strength.
Golden Twilight by Kathleen Y’Barbo……… Feeling exiled to her brothers’ homes in the Alaskan frontier, Fiona Rafferty’s one goal is to get back to civilization to enroll in medical school, not to find a husband as her father wishes. Can she make room in her dreams to include a man with a dark past—a man like Tucker Smith?
A Light the Window by Tracie Peterson………. Julie Eriksson is finally fulfilling her dreams of bringing medical care to the Eskimos of Nome. Persistent marriage proposals from Sam Curtiss make her fearful of having to give up her dream and disappoint her deceased mother. Then an outbreak of diphtheria banishes such troubles from Julie’s mind. The only cure lies hundreds of miles away, across the frozen frontier.
Destiny’s Road by Tracie Peterson……… Beth Hogan loses her husband in World War II and returns to Alaska with her two sons only to find their remote village overrun by soldiers and civilians coming to build the Alcan Highway. Then she finds a second chance at love when she meets August Eriksson.

All of these stories are so well written and so wonderful, I wouldn’t even try to pick a favorite! Each story features a young lady with struggles of her own, trying to fulfill her purpose in life. I fell in love with each of the ladies, and I read each of these stories in one setting. And this is the awesome thing about this collection. The stories are pretty short, so if you don’t have time to read a full long book, you will love these. Or if you are like me, and just want something different and quick to read, you will love this took. I just can’t say enough about how awesome these stories are, and I don’t want to tell anything much, because I will give them away! But as you can see, the stories are written by four of the most amazing authors, so the stories have to be just as amazing!!
And I can’t leave out the book cover because it is beautiful!! I love the ragged edges, the cover and inside flaps are so pretty, I have this and others in this series on my coffee table. This is truly a book that you will want others to see in your home, and it makes a really good conversation piece!!
I received this book from the Barbour Books to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55

Originally reviewed on These Pretty Words.

Beautiful and enlightening, the stories within The Alaska Brides Collection are more than just historical romances. They are an education on the settling in Alaska – from dog sleds to health outbreaks, the restriction of women at the time to how people handled the summer midnight sun. Every story brings a little aspect of faith, a little knowledge of life in Alaska in the late 1800’s.

I’ve said it before but anthologies are always hit and miss for me. A couple of these were absolutely wonderful, one I flounced two chapters in and the other two were good. But that’s the joy in an anthology – you get a little taste of the writing from different authors and can then decide if you want to dive into their catalog of works for more. I absolutely will be checking out the work of one author and making a note to look into two more.

3.5 Stars to The Alaska Brides Collection. For five historical romance novellas from four authors, pick this one up. It’s a wonderful introduction to the work of the writers – you will definitely find a new favorite inside!

The gold rush brought many people to Alaska's frontier in search of adventure, wealth, and a new life. These five stories are about the men and women who braved the cold and hardships to make a life in the frozen tundra. Filled with love and romance, each story takes a different member of the family and tells their story.

I really enjoyed reading each story. Each one was a bit different because of the different authors, but they all tied in well together. The authors wove the story of Christ and salvation into each story without it coming across as preachy. The romance was sweet and heartwarming. I had favorites and one of the stories was a definite least favorite. But only because I don't care for the "love lost and found again many years later" type of story. The story itself was well written. I'm a fan of most of these authors and enjoyed "meeting" some new authors.

I received this book free of charge from Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

*Spoiler Alert!!*
This book has five romantic stories set in the wilderness of Alaska, the first story was very good and I would read it again as well as the second, the romance was very good as well everything else. The third story although I was very disappointed in, I didn't care for the story at all. It was unexpected and I didn't appreciate where the author took it. The hero didn't marry the heroine, but instead was shamed into another marriage, which promptly fell apart. The story also covered a 20 year span of time, which was a bit much. So I would suggest not reading that particular story, As for the next story after that it was really, really good and the last story was a bit slower and not as much romance but has a very, very good message to it! All in all I recommend 4 out of 5 stories in this book. The third story is why I had to lower my star rating from what would have been a five to a three.

I loved the first 3 stories in this book. I really thought it was great that all 3 authors used the same characters. I'm disappointed in the use of archaic language in reference to the indigenous peoples throughout the book although I applaud the author describing Amy's heritage in the second story. These terms were out of use when the book was written and despite it being a historical fiction I feel it is unnecessary.
The stories at the end written by Tracie Peterson were my least favourite and in fact, I could not finish the last story. If you are a fan of this author you will likely delight in her story telling. Personally, I like my Christian fiction sprinkled with a dash of God but those last 2 stories were over the top. The characters thought of nothing else except God and what's for dinner. No thanks.

interesting read about the road they built from Seattle up to Northway. The diphtheria outbreak in Nome and the dog sleds that brought the vaccine from Fairbanks to Nome. The daylight hours throughout the year that affects the peoples sleep patterns. The public /community health nurse run she made to the Eskimo villages and the objections of a father to a daughter becoming a doctor when it was her gift. Changes that took place from 1860's to 1940's in Alaska area in general. People don't take to change well like horse cart to horseless carriage of a motor car. Mail runs taking forever. Airplane landing in Alaska. Liked how the stories evolved around relationships with kin and prospective spouses.
